Global bifurcation analysis of a rational Holling system
Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 4, pp. 537-545Views (last year): 11.In this paper, we consider a quartic family of planar vector fields corresponding to a rational Holling system which models the dynamics of the populations of predators and their prey in a given ecological or biomedical system and which is a variation on the classical Lotka–Volterra system. For the latter system, the change of the prey density per unit of time per predator called the response function is proportional to the prey density. This means that there is no saturation of the predator when the amount of available prey is large. However, it is more realistic to consider a nonlinear and bounded response function, and in fact different response functions have been used in the literature to model the predator response. After algebraic transformations, the rational Holling system can be written in the form of a quartic dynamical system. To investigate the character and distribution of the singular points in the phase plane of the quartic system, we use our method the sense of which is to obtain the simplest (well-known) system by vanishing some parameters (usually field rotation parameters) of the original system and then to input these parameters successively one by one studying the dynamics of the singular points (both finite and infinite) in the phase plane. Using the obtained information on singular points and applying our geometric approach to the qualitative analysis, we study the limit cycle bifurcations of the quartic system. To control all of the limit cycle bifurcations, especially, bifurcations of multiple limit cycles, it is necessary to know the properties and combine the effects of all of the rotation parameters. It can be done by means of the Wintner–Perko termination principle stating that the maximal one-parameter family of multiple limit cycles terminates either at a singular point which is typically of the same multiplicity (cyclicity) or on a separatrix cycle which is also typically of the same multiplicity (cyclicity). Applying this principle, we prove that the quartic system (and the corresponding rational Holling system) can have at most two limit cycles surrounding one singular point.

Simulation of turbulent compressible flows in the FlowVision software
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 4, pp. 805-825Simulation of turbulent compressible gas flows using turbulence models $k-\varepsilon$ standard (KES), $k-\varepsilon$ FlowVision (KEFV) and SST $k-\omega$ is discussed in the given article. A new version of turbulence model KEFV is presented. The results of its testing are shown. Numerical investigation of the discharge of an over-expanded jet from a conic nozzle into unlimited space is performed. The results are compared against experimental data. The dependence of the results on computational mesh is demonstrated. The dependence of the results on turbulence specified at the nozzle inlet is demonstrated. The conclusion is drawn about necessity to allow for compressibility in two-parametric turbulence models. The simple method proposed by Wilcox in 1994 suits well for this purpose. As a result, the range of applicability of the three aforementioned two-parametric turbulence models is essentially extended. Particular values of the constants responsible for the account of compressibility in the Wilcox approach are proposed. It is recommended to specify these values in simulations of compressible flows with use of models KES, KEFV, and SST.
In addition, the question how to obtain correct characteristics of supersonic turbulent flows using two-parametric turbulence models is considered. The calculations on different grids have shown that specifying a laminar flow at the inlet to the nozzle and wall functions at its surfaces, one obtains the laminar core of the flow up to the fifth Mach disk. In order to obtain correct flow characteristics, it is necessary either to specify two parameters characterizing turbulence of the inflowing gas, or to set a “starting” turbulence in a limited volume enveloping the region of presumable laminar-turbulent transition next to the exit from the nozzle. The latter possibility is implemented in model KEFV.

Synthesis of the structure of organised systems as central problem of evolutionary cybernetics
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 5, pp. 1103-1124The article provides approaches to evolutionary modelling of synthesis of organised systems and analyses methodological problems of evolutionary computations of this kind. Based on the analysis of works on evolutionary cybernetics, evolutionary theory, systems theory and synergetics, we conclude that there are open problems in formalising the synthesis of organised systems and modelling their evolution. The article emphasises that the theoretical basis for the practice of evolutionary modelling is the principles of the modern synthetic theory of evolution. Our software project uses a virtual computing environment for machine synthesis of problem solving algorithms. In the process of modelling, we obtained the results on the basis of which we conclude that there are a number of conditions that fundamentally limit the applicability of genetic programming methods in the tasks of synthesis of functional structures. The main limitations are the need for the fitness function to track the step-by-step approach to the solution of the problem and the inapplicability of this approach to the problems of synthesis of hierarchically organised systems. We note that the results obtained in the practice of evolutionary modelling in general for the whole time of its existence, confirm the conclusion the possibilities of genetic programming are fundamentally limited in solving problems of synthesizing the structure of organized systems. As sources of fundamental difficulties for machine synthesis of system structures the article points out the absence of directions for gradient descent in structural synthesis and the absence of regularity of random appearance of new organised structures. The considered problems are relevant for the theory of biological evolution. The article substantiates the statement about the biological specificity of practically possible ways of synthesis of the structure of organised systems. As a theoretical interpretation of the discussed problem, we propose to consider the system-evolutionary concept of P.K.Anokhin. The process of synthesis of functional structures in this context is an adaptive response of organisms to external conditions based on their ability to integrative synthesis of memory, needs and information about current conditions. The results of actual studies are in favour of this interpretation. We note that the physical basis of biological integrativity may be related to the phenomena of non-locality and non-separability characteristic of quantum systems. The problems considered in this paper are closely related to the problem of creating strong artificial intelligence.

A New Method For Point Estimating Parameters Of Simple Regression
Computer Research and Modeling, 2014, v. 6, no. 1, pp. 57-77Views (last year): 2. Citations: 4 (RSCI).A new method is described for finding parameters of univariate regression model: the greatest cosine method. Implementation of the method involves division of regression model parameters into two groups. The first group of parameters responsible for the angle between the experimental data vector and the regression model vector are defined by the maximum of the cosine of the angle between these vectors. The second group includes the scale factor. It is determined by means of “straightening” the relationship between the experimental data vector and the regression model vector. The interrelation of the greatest cosine method with the method of least squares is examined. Efficiency of the method is illustrated by examples.

Mathematical modeling of the interval stochastic thermal processes in technical systems at the interval indeterminacy of the determinative parameters
Computer Research and Modeling, 2016, v. 8, no. 3, pp. 501-520Views (last year): 15. Citations: 6 (RSCI).The currently performed mathematical and computer modeling of thermal processes in technical systems is based on an assumption that all the parameters determining thermal processes are fully and unambiguously known and identified (i.e., determined). Meanwhile, experience has shown that parameters determining the thermal processes are of undefined interval-stochastic character, which in turn is responsible for the intervalstochastic nature of thermal processes in the electronic system. This means that the actual temperature values of each element in an technical system will be randomly distributed within their variation intervals. Therefore, the determinative approach to modeling of thermal processes that yields specific values of element temperatures does not allow one to adequately calculate temperature distribution in electronic systems. The interval-stochastic nature of the parameters determining the thermal processes depends on three groups of factors: (a) statistical technological variation of parameters of the elements when manufacturing and assembling the system; (b) the random nature of the factors caused by functioning of an technical system (fluctuations in current and voltage; power, temperatures, and flow rates of the cooling fluid and the medium inside the system); and (c) the randomness of ambient parameters (temperature, pressure, and flow rate). The interval-stochastic indeterminacy of the determinative factors in technical systems is irremediable; neglecting it causes errors when designing electronic systems. A method that allows modeling of unsteady interval-stochastic thermal processes in technical systems (including those upon interval indeterminacy of the determinative parameters) is developed in this paper. The method is based on obtaining and further solving equations for the unsteady statistical measures (mathematical expectations, variances and covariances) of the temperature distribution in an technical system at given variation intervals and the statistical measures of the determinative parameters. Application of the elaborated method to modeling of the interval-stochastic thermal process in a particular electronic system is considered.

Identification of a controlled object using frequency responses obtained from a dynamic neural network model of a control system
Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 5, pp. 729-740Views (last year): 10.We present results of a study aimed at identification of a controlled object’s channels based on postprocessing of measurements with development of a model of a multiple-input controlled object and subsequent active modelling experiment. The controlled object model is developed using approximation of its behavior by a neural network model using trends obtained during a passive experiment in the mode of normal operation. Recurrent neural network containing feedback elements allows to simulate behavior of dynamic objects; input and feedback time delays allow to simulate behavior of inertial objects with pure delay. The model was taught using examples of the object’s operation with a control system and is presented by a dynamic neural network and a model of a regulator with a known regulation function. The neural network model simulates the system’s behavior and is used to conduct active computing experiments. Neural network model allows to obtain the controlled object’s response to an exploratory stimulus, including a periodic one. The obtained complex frequency response is used to evaluate parameters of the object’s transfer system using the least squares method. We present an example of identification of a channel of the simulated control system. The simulated object has two input ports and one output port and varying transport delays in transfer channels. One of the input ports serves as a controlling stimulus, the second is a controlled perturbation. The controlled output value changes as a result of control stimulus produced by the regulator operating according to the proportional-integral regulation law based on deviation of the controlled value from the task. The obtained parameters of the object’s channels’ transfer functions are close to the parameters of the input simulated object. The obtained normalized error of the reaction for a single step-wise stimulus of the control system model developed based on identification of the simulated control system doesn’t exceed 0.08. The considered objects pertain to the class of technological processes with continuous production. Such objects are characteristic of chemical, metallurgic, mine-mill, pulp and paper, and other industries.

On numerical solution of joint inverse geophysical problems with structural constraints
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 2, pp. 329-343Inverse geophysical problems are difficult to solve due to their mathematically incorrect formulation and large computational complexity. Geophysical exploration in frontier areas is even more complicated due to the lack of reliable geological information. In this case, inversion methods that allow interpretation of several types of geophysical data together are recognized to be of major importance. This paper is dedicated to one of such inversion methods, which is based on minimization of the determinant of the Gram matrix for a set of model vectors. Within the framework of this approach, we minimize a nonlinear functional, which consists of squared norms of data residual of different types, the sum of stabilizing functionals and a term that measures the structural similarity between different model vectors. We apply this approach to seismic and electromagnetic synthetic data set. Specifically, we study joint inversion of acoustic pressure response together with controlled-source electrical field imposing structural constraints on resulting electrical conductivity and P-wave velocity distributions.
We start off this note with the problem formulation and present the numerical method for inverse problem. We implemented the conjugate-gradient algorithm for non-linear optimization. The efficiency of our approach is demonstrated in numerical experiments, in which the true 3D electrical conductivity model was assumed to be known, but the velocity model was constructed during inversion of seismic data. The true velocity model was based on a simplified geology structure of a marine prospect. Synthetic seismic data was used as an input for our minimization algorithm. The resulting velocity model not only fit to the data but also has structural similarity with the given conductivity model. Our tests have shown that optimally chosen weight of the Gramian term may improve resolution of the final models considerably.

Diffusion–reaction–advection equations for the predator–prey system in a heterogeneous environment
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 6, pp. 1161-1176We analyze variants of considering the inhomogeneity of the environment in computer modeling of the dynamics of a predator and prey based on a system of reaction-diffusion–advection equations. The local interaction of species (reaction terms) is described by the logistic law for the prey and the Beddington –DeAngelis functional response, special cases of which are the Holling type II functional response and the Arditi – Ginzburg model. We consider a one-dimensional problem in space for a heterogeneous resource (carrying capacity) and three types of taxis (the prey to resource and from the predator, the predator to the prey). An analytical approach is used to study the stability of stationary solutions in the case of local interaction (diffusionless approach). We employ the method of lines to study diffusion and advective processes. A comparison of the critical values of the mortality parameter of predators is given. Analysis showed that at constant coefficients in the Beddington –DeAngelis model, critical values are variable along the spatial coordinate, while we do not observe this effect for the Arditi –Ginzburg model. We propose a modification of the reaction terms, which makes it possible to take into account the heterogeneity of the resource. Numerical results on the dynamics of species for large and small migration coefficients are presented, demonstrating a decrease in the influence of the species of local members on the emerging spatio-temporal distributions of populations. Bifurcation transitions are analyzed when changing the parameters of diffusion–advection and reaction terms.

The given work is devoted aerodynamic properties of system of the bodies which are flowed round by a supersonic stream. The question on reduction of mutual influence with increase in the size characterising scattering of elements of system is considered. The method of construction of a grid is applied to current modeling from a set of grids. One of grids, regular with rectangular cells, is responsible for an interference between bodies
and serves for the description of an external nonviscous current. Other grids are connected with surfaces of streamline bodies and allow to describe viscous layers about streamline bodies. These grids are imposed on the first, without combination of any knots. Boundary conditions are realized through interpolation of functions on borders from one grid on another. -
Modeling the dynamics of plankton community considering phytoplankton toxicity
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 6, pp. 1301-1323We propose a three-component discrete-time model of the phytoplankton-zooplankton community, in which toxic and non-toxic species of phytoplankton compete for resources. The use of the Holling functional response of type II allows us to describe an interaction between zooplankton and phytoplankton. With the Ricker competition model, we describe the restriction of phytoplankton biomass growth by the availability of external resources (mineral nutrition, oxygen, light, etc.). Many phytoplankton species, including diatom algae, are known not to release toxins if they are not damaged. Zooplankton pressure on phytoplankton decreases in the presence of toxic substances. For example, Copepods are selective in their food choices and avoid consuming toxin-producing phytoplankton. Therefore, in our model, zooplankton (predator) consumes only non-toxic phytoplankton species being prey, and toxic species phytoplankton only competes with non-toxic for resources.
We study analytically and numerically the proposed model. Dynamic mode maps allow us to investigate stability domains of fixed points, bifurcations, and the evolution of the community. Stability loss of fixed points is shown to occur only through a cascade of period-doubling bifurcations. The Neimark – Sacker scenario leading to the appearance of quasiperiodic oscillations is found to realize as well. Changes in intrapopulation parameters of phytoplankton or zooplankton can lead to abrupt transitions from regular to quasi-periodic dynamics (according to the Neimark – Sacker scenario) and further to cycles with a short period or even stationary dynamics. In the multistability areas, an initial condition variation with the unchanged values of all model parameters can shift the current dynamic mode or/and community composition.
The proposed discrete-time model of community is quite simple and reveals dynamics of interacting species that coincide with features of experimental dynamics. In particular, the system shows behavior like in prey-predator models without evolution: the predator fluctuations lag behind those of prey by about a quarter of the period. Considering the phytoplankton genetic heterogeneity, in the simplest case of two genetically different forms: toxic and non-toxic ones, allows the model to demonstrate both long-period antiphase oscillations of predator and prey and cryptic cycles. During the cryptic cycle, the prey density remains almost constant with fluctuating predators, which corresponds to the influence of rapid evolution masking the trophic interaction.
