Identification of a controlled object using frequency responses obtained from a dynamic neural network model of a control system
Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 5, pp. 729-740Views (last year): 10.We present results of a study aimed at identification of a controlled object’s channels based on postprocessing of measurements with development of a model of a multiple-input controlled object and subsequent active modelling experiment. The controlled object model is developed using approximation of its behavior by a neural network model using trends obtained during a passive experiment in the mode of normal operation. Recurrent neural network containing feedback elements allows to simulate behavior of dynamic objects; input and feedback time delays allow to simulate behavior of inertial objects with pure delay. The model was taught using examples of the object’s operation with a control system and is presented by a dynamic neural network and a model of a regulator with a known regulation function. The neural network model simulates the system’s behavior and is used to conduct active computing experiments. Neural network model allows to obtain the controlled object’s response to an exploratory stimulus, including a periodic one. The obtained complex frequency response is used to evaluate parameters of the object’s transfer system using the least squares method. We present an example of identification of a channel of the simulated control system. The simulated object has two input ports and one output port and varying transport delays in transfer channels. One of the input ports serves as a controlling stimulus, the second is a controlled perturbation. The controlled output value changes as a result of control stimulus produced by the regulator operating according to the proportional-integral regulation law based on deviation of the controlled value from the task. The obtained parameters of the object’s channels’ transfer functions are close to the parameters of the input simulated object. The obtained normalized error of the reaction for a single step-wise stimulus of the control system model developed based on identification of the simulated control system doesn’t exceed 0.08. The considered objects pertain to the class of technological processes with continuous production. Such objects are characteristic of chemical, metallurgic, mine-mill, pulp and paper, and other industries.

Framework sumo-atclib for adaptive traffic control modeling
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 1, pp. 69-78This article proposes the sumo-atclib framework, which provides a convenient uniform interface for testing adaptive control algorithms with different limitations, for example, restrictions on phase durations, phase sequences, restrictions on the minimum time between control actions, which uses the open source microscopic transport modeling environment SUMO. The framework shares the functionality of controllers (class TrafficController) and a monitoring and detection system (class StateObserver), which repeats the architecture of real traffic light objects and adaptive control systems and simplifies the testing of new algorithms, since combinations of different controllers and vehicle detection systems can be freely varied. Also, unlike most existing solutions, the road class Road has been added, which combines a set of lanes, this allows, for example, to determine the adjacency of regulated intersections, in cases when the number of lanes changes on the way from one intersection to another, and therefore the road graph is divided into several edges. At the same time, the algorithms themselves use the same interface and are abstracted from the specific parameters of the detectors, network topologies, that is, it is assumed that this solution will allow the transport engineer to test ready-made algorithms for a new scenario, without the need to adapt them to new conditions, which speeds up the development process of the control system, and reduces design overhead. At the moment, the package contains examples of MaxPressure algorithms and the Q-learning reinforcement learning method, the database of examples is also being updated. The framework also includes a set of SUMO scripts for testing algorithms, which includes both synthetic maps and well-verified SUMO scripts such as Cologne and Ingolstadt. In addition, the framework provides a set of automatically calculated metrics, such as total travel time, delay time, average speed; the framework also provides a ready-made example for visualization of metrics.

Searching stochastic equilibria in transport networks by universal primal-dual gradient method
Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 3, pp. 335-345Views (last year): 28.We consider one of the problems of transport modelling — searching the equilibrium distribution of traffic flows in the network. We use the classic Beckman’s model to describe time costs and flow distribution in the network represented by directed graph. Meanwhile agents’ behavior is not completely rational, what is described by the introduction of Markov logit dynamics: any driver selects a route randomly according to the Gibbs’ distribution taking into account current time costs on the edges of the graph. Thus, the problem is reduced to searching of the stationary distribution for this dynamics which is a stochastic Nash – Wardrope equilibrium in the corresponding population congestion game in the transport network. Since the game is potential, this problem is equivalent to the problem of minimization of some functional over flows distribution. The stochasticity is reflected in the appearance of the entropy regularization, in contrast to non-stochastic case. The dual problem is constructed to obtain a solution of the optimization problem. The universal primal-dual gradient method is applied. A major specificity of this method lies in an adaptive adjustment to the local smoothness of the problem, what is most important in case of the complex structure of the objective function and an inability to obtain a prior smoothness bound with acceptable accuracy. Such a situation occurs in the considered problem since the properties of the function strongly depend on the transport graph, on which we do not impose strong restrictions. The article describes the algorithm including the numerical differentiation for calculation of the objective function value and gradient. In addition, the paper represents a theoretical estimate of time complexity of the algorithm and the results of numerical experiments conducted on a small American town.

Specifics of public transport routing in cities of different types
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 2, pp. 381-394This article presents a classification of cities, taking into account their spatial planning and possible transport solutions for cities of various types. It also discusses examples of various strategies for the development of urban public transport in Russia and the European Union with a comparison of their efficiency. The article gives examples of the impact of urban planning on mobility of citizens. To implement complex strategic decisions, it is necessary to use micro and macro models which allow a comparison of situations “as is” and “as to be” to predict consequences. In addition, the authors propose a methodology to improve public transport route network and road network, which includes determining population needs in working and educational correspondences, identifying bottlenecks in the road network, developing simulation models and developing recommendations based on the simulation results, as well as the calculation of efficiency, including the calculation of a positive social effect, economic efficiency, environmental friendliness and sustainability of the urban transport system. To prove the suggested methodology, the macro and micro models of the city under study were built taking into account the spatial planning and other specifics of the city. Thus, the case study of the city of Naberezhnye Chelny shows that the use of our methodology can help to improve the situation on the roads by optimizing the bus route network and the road infrastructure. The results showed that by implementing the proposed solutions one can decrease the amount of transport load on the bottlenecks, the number of overlapping bus routes and the traffic density.

Transport modeling: averaging price matrices
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 2, pp. 317-327This paper considers various approaches to averaging the generalized travel costs calculated for different modes of travel in the transportation network. The mode of transportation is understood to mean both the mode of transport, for example, a car or public transport, and movement without the use of transport, for example, on foot. The task of calculating the trip matrices includes the task of calculating the total matrices, in other words, estimating the total demand for movements by all modes, as well as the task of splitting the matrices according to the mode, also called modal splitting. To calculate trip matrices, gravitational, entropy and other models are used, in which the probability of movement between zones is estimated based on a certain measure of the distance of these zones from each other. Usually, the generalized cost of moving along the optimal path between zones is used as a distance measure. However, the generalized cost of movement differs for different modes of movement. When calculating the total trip matrices, it becomes necessary to average the generalized costs by modes of movement. The averaging procedure is subject to the natural requirement of monotonicity in all arguments. This requirement is not met by some commonly used averaging methods, for example, averaging with weights. The problem of modal splitting is solved by applying the methods of discrete choice theory. In particular, within the framework of the theory of discrete choice, correct methods have been developed for averaging the utility of alternatives that are monotonic in all arguments. The authors propose some adaptation of the methods of the theory of discrete choice for application to the calculation of the average cost of movements in the gravitational and entropy models. The transfer of averaging formulas from the context of the modal splitting model to the trip matrix calculation model requires the introduction of new parameters and the derivation of conditions for the possible value of these parameters, which was done in this article. The issues of recalibration of the gravitational function, which is necessary when switching to a new averaging method, if the existing function is calibrated taking into account the use of the weighted average cost, were also considered. The proposed methods were implemented on the example of a small fragment of the transport network. The results of calculations are presented, demonstrating the advantage of the proposed methods.

System modeling, risks evaluation and optimization of a distributed computer system
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 6, pp. 1349-1359The article deals with the problem of a distributed system operation reliability. The system core is an open integration platform that provides interaction of varied software for modeling gas transportation. Some of them provide an access through thin clients on the cloud technology “software as a service”. Mathematical models of operation, transmission and computing are to ensure the operation of an automated dispatching system for oil and gas transportation. The paper presents a system solution based on the theory of Markov random processes and considers the stable operation stage. The stationary operation mode of the Markov chain with continuous time and discrete states is described by a system of Chapman–Kolmogorov equations with respect to the average numbers (mathematical expectations) of the objects in certain states. The objects of research are both system elements that are present in a large number – thin clients and computing modules, and individual ones – a server, a network manager (message broker). Together, they are interacting Markov random processes. The interaction is determined by the fact that the transition probabilities in one group of elements depend on the average numbers of other elements groups.
The authors propose a multi-criteria dispersion model of risk assessment for such systems (both in the broad and narrow sense, in accordance with the IEC standard). The risk is the standard deviation of estimated object parameter from its average value. The dispersion risk model makes possible to define optimality criteria and whole system functioning risks. In particular, for a thin client, the following is calculated: the loss profit risk, the total risk of losses due to non-productive element states, and the total risk of all system states losses.
Finally the paper proposes compromise schemes for solving the multi-criteria problem of choosing the optimal operation strategy based on the selected set of compromise criteria.

Modeling of the effective environment in the Republic of Tatarstan using transport data
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 2, pp. 395-404Automated urban traffic monitoring systems are widely used to solve various tasks in intelligent transport systems of different regions. They include video enforcement, video surveillance, traffic management system, etc. Effective traffic management and rapid response to traffic incidents require continuous monitoring and analysis of information from these complexes, as well as time series forecasting for further anomaly detection in traffic flow. To increase the forecasting quality, data fusion from different sources is needed. It will reduce the forecasting error, related to possible incorrect values and data gaps. We implemented the approach for short-term and middle-term forecasting of traffic flow (5, 10, 15 min) based on data fusion from video enforcement and video surveillance systems. We made forecasting using different recurrent neural network architectures: LSTM, GRU, and bidirectional LSTM with one and two layers. We investigated the forecasting quality of bidirectional LSTM with 64 and 128 neurons in hidden layers. The input window size (1, 4, 12, 24, 48) was investigated. The RMSE value was used as a forecasting error. We got minimum RMSE = 0.032405 for basic LSTM with 64 neurons in the hidden layer and window size = 24.

Cloud interpretation of the entropy model for calculating the trip matrix
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 1, pp. 89-103As the population of cities grows, the need to plan for the development of transport infrastructure becomes more acute. For this purpose, transport modeling packages are created. These packages usually contain a set of convex optimization problems, the iterative solution of which leads to the desired equilibrium distribution of flows along the paths. One of the directions for the development of transport modeling is the construction of more accurate generalized models that take into account different types of passengers, their travel purposes, as well as the specifics of personal and public modes of transport that agents can use. Another important direction of transport models development is to improve the efficiency of the calculations performed. Since, due to the large dimension of modern transport networks, the search for a numerical solution to the problem of equilibrium distribution of flows along the paths is quite expensive. The iterative nature of the entire solution process only makes this worse. One of the approaches leading to a reduction in the number of calculations performed is the construction of consistent models that allow to combine the blocks of a 4-stage model into a single optimization problem. This makes it possible to eliminate the iterative running of blocks, moving from solving a separate optimization problem at each stage to some general problem. Early work has proven that such approaches provide equivalent solutions. However, it is worth considering the validity and interpretability of these methods. The purpose of this article is to substantiate a single problem, that combines both the calculation of the trip matrix and the modal choice, for the generalized case when there are different layers of demand, types of agents and classes of vehicles in the transport network. The article provides possible interpretations for the gauge parameters used in the problem, as well as for the dual factors associated with the balance constraints. The authors of the article also show the possibility of combining the considered problem with a block for determining network load into a single optimization problem.

Traffic flow speed prediction on transportation graph with convolutional neural networks
Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 3, pp. 359-367Views (last year): 36.The short-term prediction of road traffic condition is one of the main tasks of transportation modelling. The main purpose of which are traffic control, reporting of accidents, avoiding traffic jams due to knowledge of traffic flow and subsequent transportation planning. A number of solutions exist — both model-driven and data driven had proven to be successful in capturing the dynamics of traffic flow. Nevertheless, most space-time models suffer from high mathematical complexity and low efficiency. Artificial Neural Networks, one of the prominent datadriven approaches, show promising performance in modelling the complexity of traffic flow. We present a neural network architecture for traffic flow prediction on a real-world road network graph. The model is based on the combination of a recurrent neural network and graph convolutional neural network. Where a recurrent neural network is used to model temporal dependencies, and a convolutional neural network is responsible for extracting spatial features from traffic. To make multiple few steps ahead predictions, the encoder-decoder architecture is used, which allows to reduce noise propagation due to inexact predictions. To model the complexity of traffic flow, we employ multilayered architecture. Deeper neural networks are more difficult to train. To speed up the training process, we use skip-connections between each layer, so that each layer teaches only the residual function with respect to the previous layer outputs. The resulting neural network was trained on raw data from traffic flow detectors from the US highway system with a resolution of 5 minutes. 3 metrics: mean absolute error, mean relative error, mean-square error were used to estimate the quality of the prediction. It was found that for all metrics the proposed model achieved lower prediction error than previously published models, such as Vector Auto Regression, LSTM and Graph Convolution GRU.

Proof of the connection between the Backman model with degenerate cost functions and the model of stable dynamics
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 2, pp. 335-342Since 1950s the field of city transport modelling has progressed rapidly. The first equilibrium distribution models of traffic flow appeared. The most popular model (which is still being widely used) was the Beckmann model, based on the two Wardrop principles. The core of the model could be briefly described as the search for the Nash equilibrium in a population demand game, in which losses of agents (drivers) are calculated based on the chosen path and demands of this path with correspondences being fixed. The demands (costs) of a path are calculated as the sum of the demands of different path segments (graph edges), that are included in the path. The costs of an edge (edge travel time) are determined by the amount of traffic on this edge (more traffic means larger travel time). The flow on a graph edge is determined by the sum of flows over all paths passing through the given edge. Thus, the cost of traveling along a path is determined not only by the choice of the path, but also by the paths other drivers have chosen. Thus, it is a standard game theory task. The way cost functions are constructed allows us to narrow the search for equilibrium to solving an optimization problem (game is potential in this case). If the cost functions are monotone and non-decreasing, the optimization problem is convex. Actually, different assumptions about the cost functions form different models. The most popular model is based on the BPR cost function. Such functions are massively used in calculations of real cities. However, in the beginning of the XXI century, Yu. E. Nesterov and A. de Palma showed that Beckmann-type models have serious weak points. Those could be fixed using the stable dynamics model, as it was called by the authors. The search for equilibrium here could be also reduced to an optimization problem, moreover, the problem of linear programming. In 2013, A.V.Gasnikov discovered that the stable dynamics model can be obtained by a passage to the limit in the Beckmann model. However, it was made only for several practically important, but still special cases. Generally, the question if this passage to the limit is possible remains open. In this paper, we provide the justification of the possibility of the above-mentioned passage to the limit in the general case, when the cost function for traveling along the edge as a function of the flow along the edge degenerates into a function equal to fixed costs until the capacity is reached and it is equal to plus infinity when the capacity is exceeded.
