Simulation of uneven combustion and stress-strain state of powder elements of a tubular charge during firing
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 6, pp. 1281-1300

The paper presents the physical and mathematical formulation of the problems of internal ballistics of an artillery shot for a charge consisting of a set of powder tubes and their stress-strain state. Combustion and movement of a bundle of powder tubes along the barrel channel is modeled by an equivalent tubular charge of all-round combustion. It is assumed that the equivalent tube moves along the axis of the bore. The speed of movement of an equivalent tubular charge and its current position are determined from Newton’s second law. When calculating the flow parameters, two-dimensional axisymmetric equations of gas dynamics were used, for the solution of which an axisymmetric orthogonalized difference grid is constructed, which adapts to the flow conditions. The control volume method is used to numerically solve the system of gas-dynamic equations. The gas parameters at the boundaries of the control volumes are determined using a self-similar solution to the Godunov’s problem of the decay of an arbitrary discontinuity. The stress-strain state is modeled for a separate burning powder tube located in the field of gas-dynamic parameters. The calculation of the gas-dynamic parameters of the shot is carried out without taking into account the deformed state of the powder elements. The behavior of powder elements during firing is considered under these conditions. The finite element method with the division of the calculation area into triangular elements is used to solve the problem of elasticity. In the process of powder tube burnout, the computational grid on each time layer of the dynamic problem is completely updated due to a change in the boundaries of the powder element due to combustion. The paper shows the time dependences of the parameters of the internal ballistics process and the stress-strain state of powder elements, as well as the distribution of the main parameters of the flow of combustion products at different points in time. It has been established that the tubular powder elements during the shot experience significant deformations, which must be taken into account when solving the basic problem of internal ballistics. The data obtained give an idea of the level of equivalent stresses acting at various points of the powder element. The results obtained indicate the relevance of the conjugate formulation of the problem of gas dynamics and the stress-strain state for charges consisting of tubular powders, since this allows a new approach to the design of tubular charges and opens up the possibility of determining the parameters on which the physics of the combustion process of gunpowder significantly depends, therefore, and the dynamics of the shot process.

Mathematical modeling of hydrodynamics problems of the Azov Sea on a multiprocessor computer system
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 3, pp. 647-672

The article is devoted to modeling the shallow water hydrodynamic processes using the example of the Azov Sea. The article presents a mathematical model of the hydrodynamics of a shallow water body, which allows one to calculate three-dimensional fields of the velocity vector of movement of the aquatic environment. Application of regularizers according to B.N.Chetverushkin in the continuity equation led to a change in the method of calculating the pressure field, based on solving the wave equation. A discrete finite-difference scheme has been constructed for calculating pressure in an area whose linear vertical dimensions are significantly smaller than those in horizontal coordinate directions, which is typical for the geometry of shallow water bodies. The method and algorithm for solving grid equations with a tridiagonal preconditioner are described. The proposed method is used to solve grid equations that arise when calculating pressure for the three-dimensional problem of hydrodynamics of the Azov Sea. It is shown that the proposed method converges faster than the modified alternating triangular method. A parallel implementation of the proposed method for solving grid equations is presented and theoretical and practical estimates of the acceleration of the algorithm are carried out taking into account the latency time of the computing system. The results of computational experiments for solving problems of hydrodynamics of the Sea of Azov using the hybrid MPI + OpenMP technology are presented. The developed models and algorithms were used to reconstruct the environmental disaster that occurred in the Sea of Azov in 2001 and to solve the problem of the movement of the aquatic environment in estuary areas. Numerical experiments were carried out on the K-60 hybrid computing cluster of the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics of Russian Academy of Sciences.

Numerical solution of quasi-hydrodynamic equations on non-structured triangle mesh
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2009, v. 1, no. 2, pp. 181-188

A new flow modeling method on unstructured grid was proposed. As a basis system this method used quasi-hydro-dynamic equations. The finite volume method vas used for solving these equations. The Delaunay triangulation was used for constructing mesh. This proposed method was tested in modeling of incompressible flow through a channel with complex profile. The acquired results showed that the proposed method could be used in flow modeling in unstructured grid.

Supersonic flow of system of bodies
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2013, v. 5, no. 6, pp. 969-980

The given work is devoted aerodynamic properties of system of the bodies which are flowed round by a supersonic stream. The question on reduction of mutual influence with increase in the size characterising scattering of elements of system is considered. The method of construction of a grid is applied to current modeling from a set of grids. One of grids, regular with rectangular cells, is responsible for an interference between bodies
and serves for the description of an external nonviscous current. Other grids are  connected with surfaces of streamline bodies and allow to describe viscous layers about streamline bodies. These grids are imposed on the first, without combination of any knots. Boundary conditions are realized through interpolation of functions on borders from one grid on another.

Computational investigation of aerodynamic performance of the generic flying-wing aircraft model using FlowVision computational code
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 1, pp. 67-74

Modern approach to modernization of the experimental techniques involves design of mathematical models of the wind-tunnel, which are also referred to as Electronic of Digital Wind-Tunnels. They are meant to supplement experimental data with computational analysis. Using Electronic Wind-Tunnels is supposed to provide accurate information on aerodynamic performance of an aircraft basing on a set of experimental data, to obtain agreement between data from different test facilities and perform comparison between computational results for flight conditions and data with the presence of support system and test section.

Completing this task requires some preliminary research, which involves extensive wind-tunnel testing as well as RANS-based computational research with the use of supercomputer technologies. At different stages of computational investigation one may have to model not only the aircraft itself but also the wind-tunnel test section and the model support system. Modelling such complex geometries will inevitably result in quite complex vertical and separated flows one will have to simulate. Another problem is that boundary layer transition is often present in wind-tunnel testing due to quite small model scales and therefore low Reynolds numbers.

In the current article the first stage of the Electronic Wind-Tunnel design program is covered. This stage involves computational investigation of aerodynamic characteristics of the generic flying-wing UAV model previously tested in TsAGI T-102 wind-tunnel. Since this stage is preliminary the model was simulated without taking test-section and support system geometry into account. The boundary layer was considered to be fully turbulent.

For the current research FlowVision computational code was used because of its automatic grid generation feature and stability of the solver when simulating complex flows. A two-equation k–ε turbulence model was used with special wall functions designed to properly capture flow separation. Computed lift force and drag force coefficients for different angles-of-attack were compared to the experimental data.

Estimation of anisotropy of seismic response from fractured geological objects
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 2, pp. 231-240

Seismic survey process is the common method of prospecting and exploration of deposits: oil and natural gas. Invented at the beginning of the XX century, it has received significant development and is currently used by almost all service oil companies. Its main advantages are the acceptable cost of fieldwork (in comparison with drilling wells) and the accuracy of estimating the characteristics of the subsurface area. However, with the discovery of non-traditional deposits (for example, the Arctic shelf, the Bazhenov Formation), the task of improving existing and creating new seismic data processing technologies became important. Significant development in this direction is possible with the use of numerical simulation of the propagation of seismic waves in realistic models of the geological medium, since it is possible to specify an arbitrary internal structure of the medium with subsequent evaluation of the synthetic signal-response.

The present work is devoted to the study of spatial dynamic processes occurring in geological medium containing fractured inclusions in the process of seismic exploration. The authors constructed a three-dimensional model of a layered massif containing a layer of fluid-saturated cracks, which makes it possible to estimate the signal-response when the structure of the inhomogeneous inclusion is varied. To describe physical processes, we use a system of equations for a linearly elastic body in partial derivatives of the second order, which is solved numerically by a grid-characteristic method on hexahedral grid. In this case, the crack planes are identified at the stage of constructing the grid, and further an additional correction is used to ensure a correct seismic response for the model parameters typical for geological media.

In the paper, three-component area seismograms with a common explosion point were obtained. On their basis, the effect of the structure of a fractured medium on the anisotropy of the seismic response recorded on the day surface at a different distance from the source was estimated. It is established that the kinematic characteristics of the signal remain constant, while the dynamic characteristics for ordered and disordered models can differ by tens of percents.

High-Reynolds number calculations of turbulent heat transfer in FlowVision software
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 4, pp. 461-481

This work presents the model of heat wall functions FlowVision (WFFV), which allows simulation of nonisothermal flows of fluid and gas near solid surfaces on relatively coarse grids with use of turbulence models. The work follows the research on the development of wall functions applicable in wide range of the values of quantity y+. Model WFFV assumes smooth profiles of the tangential component of velocity, turbulent viscosity, temperature, and turbulent heat conductivity near a solid surface. Possibility of using a simple algebraic model for calculation of variable turbulent Prandtl number is investigated in this study (the turbulent Prandtl number enters model WFFV as parameter). The results are satisfactory. The details of implementation of model WFFV in the FlowVision software are explained. In particular, the boundary condition for the energy equation used in high-Reynolds number calculations of non-isothermal flows is considered. The boundary condition is deduced for the energy equation written via thermodynamic enthalpy and via full enthalpy. The capability of the model is demonstrated on two test problems: flow of incompressible fluid past a plate and supersonic flow of gas past a plate (M = 3).

Analysis of literature shows that there exists essential ambiguity in experimental data and, as a consequence, in empirical correlations for the Stanton number (that being a dimensionless heat flux). The calculations suggest that the default values of the model parameters, automatically specified in the program, allow calculations of heat fluxes at extended solid surfaces with engineering accuracy. At the same time, it is obvious that one cannot invent universal wall functions. For this reason, the controls of model WFFV are made accessible from the FlowVision interface. When it is necessary, a user can tune the model for simulation of the required type of flow.

The proposed model of wall functions is compatible with all the turbulence models implemented in the FlowVision software: the algebraic model of Smagorinsky, the Spalart-Allmaras model, the SST $k-\omega$ model, the standard $k-\varepsilon$ model, the $k-\varepsilon$ model of Abe, Kondoh, Nagano, the quadratic $k-\varepsilon$ model, and $k-\varepsilon$ model FlowVision.

Parallel implementation of the grid-characteristic method in the case of explicit contact boundaries
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 5, pp. 667-678

We consider an application of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) technology for parallelization of the program code which solves equation of the linear elasticity theory. The solution of this equation describes the propagation of elastic waves in demormable rigid bodies. The solution of such direct problem of seismic wave propagation is of interest in seismics and geophysics. Our implementation of solver uses grid-characteristic method to make simulations. We consider technique to reduce time of communication between MPI processes during the simulation. This is important when it is necessary to conduct modeling in complex problem formulations, and still maintain the high level of parallelism effectiveness, even when thousands of processes are used. A solution of the problem of effective communication is extremely important when several computational grids with arbirtrary geometry of contacts between them are used in the calculation. The complexity of this task increases if an independent distribution of the grid nodes between processes is allowed. In this paper, a generalized approach is developed for processing contact conditions in terms of nodes reinterpolation from a given section of one grid to a certain area of the second grid. An efficient way of parallelization and establishing effective interprocess communications is proposed. For provided example problems we provide wave fileds and seismograms for both 2D and 3D formulations. It is shown that the algorithm can be realized both on Cartesian and on structured (curvilinear) computational grids. The considered statements demonstrate the possibility of carrying out calculations taking into account the surface topographies and curvilinear geometry of curvilinear contacts between the geological layers. Application of curvilinear grids allows to obtain more accurate results than when calculating only using Cartesian grids. The resulting parallelization efficiency is almost 100% up to 4096 processes (we used 128 processes as a basis to find efficiency). With number of processes larger than 4096, an expected gradual decrease in efficiency is observed. The rate of decline is not great, so at 16384 processes the parallelization efficiency remains at 80%.
