Selection of boundary conditions for modeling the turbulent exchange processes within the atmospheric surface layer
Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 1, pp. 27-46Views (last year): 19.One- and two-dimensional hydrodynamic models of turbulent transfer within the atmospheric surface layer under neutral thermal stratification are considered. Both models are based on the solution of system of the timeaveraged equations of Navier – Stokes and continuity using a 1.5-order closure scheme as well as equations for turbulent kinetic energy and the rate of its dissipation. The influence of the upper and lower boundary conditions on vertical profiles of wind speed and turbulence parameters within the atmospheric surface layer was derived using an one-dimensional model usually applied in case of an uniform ground surface. The boundary conditions in the model were prescribed in such way that the vertical wind and turbulence patterns were well agreed with widely used logarithmic vertical profile of wind speed, linear dependence of turbulent exchange coefficient on height above ground surface level and constancy of turbulent kinetic energy within the atmospheric surface layer under neutral atmospheric conditions. On the basis of the classical one-dimensional model it is possible to obtain a number of relationships which link the vertical wind speed gradient, turbulent kinetic energy and the rate of its dissipation. Each of these relationships can be used as a boundary condition in our hydrodynamic model. The boundary conditions for the wind speed and the rate of dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy were selected as parameters to provide the smallest deviations of model calculations from classical distributions of wind and turbulence parameters. The corresponding upper and lower boundary conditions were used to define the initial and boundary value problem in the two-dimensional hydrodynamic model allowing to consider complex topography and horizontal vegetation heterogeneity. The two-dimensional model with selected optimal boundary conditions was used to describe the spatial pattern of turbulent air flow when it interacted with the forest edge. The dynamics of the air flow establishment depending on the distance from the forest edge was analyzed. For all considered initial and boundary value problems the unconditionally stable implicit finite-difference schemes of their numerical solution were developed and implemented.

Calculation of radiation in shockwave layer of a space vehicle taking into account details of photon spectrum
Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 4, pp. 579-594Views (last year): 8. Citations: 1 (RSCI).Calculations of radiation transport in the shockwave layer of a descent space vehicle cause essential difficulties due to complex multi-resonance dependence of the absorption macroscopic cross sections from the photon energy. The convergence of two approximate spectrum averaging methods to the results of exact pointwise spectrum calculations is investigated. The first one is the well known multigroup method, the second one is the Lebesgue averaging method belonging to methods of the reduction of calculation points by means of aggregation of spectral points which are characterized by equal absorption strength. It is shown that convergence of the Lebesgue averaging method is significantly faster than the multigroup approach as the number of groups is increased. The only 100–150 Lebesgue groups are required to achieve the accuracy of pointwise calculations even in the shock layer at upper atmosphere with sharp absorption lines. At the same time the number of calculations is reduced by more than four order. Series of calculations of the radiation distribution function in 2D shock layer around a sphere and a blunt cone were performed using the local flat layer approximation and the Lebesgue averaging method. It is shown that the shock wave radiation becomes more significant both in value of the energy flux incident on the body surface and in the rate of energy exchange with the gas-dynamic flow in the case of increasing of the vehicle’s size.

Modeling the physical processes of a powerful nuclear explosion on an asteroid
Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 5, pp. 861-877As part of the paper, a physical and theoretical analysis of the impact processes of various factors of a highaltitude and high-energy nuclear explosion on the asteroid in extra-atmospheric conditions of open space is done. It is shown that, in accordance with the energy and permeability of the plasma of explosion products, X-ray and gamma-neutron radiation, a layered structure with a different energy density depending on angular coordinates is formed on the surface of the asteroid. The temporal patterns of the energy transformation for each layer is clarified and the roles of various photo- and collision processes are determined. The effect of a high-speed plasma flow is erosive in nature, and the plasma pulse is transmitted to the asteroid. The paper presents that in a thin layer of x-ray absorption, the asteroid substance is heated to high temperatures and as a result of its expansion, a recoil impulse is formed, which is not decisive due to the small mass of the expanding high-temperature plasma. Calculations shows that the main impulse received by an asteroid is associated with the entrainment of a heated layer of a substance formed by a neutron flux (7.5 E 1014 g E cm/s). It is shown that an asteroid with a radius of ~100 m acquires a velocity of . 100 cm/s. The calculations were performed taking into account the explosion energy spent on the destruction of the amorphous structure of the asteroid material (~1 eV/atom = 3.8 E 1010 erg/g) and ionization in the region of the high-temperature layer. Based on a similar analysis, an approximation is obtained for estimating the average size of fragments in the event of the possible destruction of the asteroid by shock waves generated inside it under the influence of pressure impulses. A physical experiment was conducted in laboratory conditions, simulating the fragmentation of a stone asteroid and confirming the validity of the obtained dependence on the selected values of certain parameters. As a result of numerical studies of the effects of the explosion, carried out at different distances from the surface of the asteroid, it is shown that taking into account the real geometry of the spallation layer gives the optimal height for the formation of the maximum asteroid momentum by a factor of 1.5 greater than similar estimates according to the simplified model. A two-stage concept of the impact of nuclear explosions on an asteroid using radar guidance tools is proposed. The paper analyzes the possible impact of the emerging ionization interference on the radar tracking of the movement of large fragments of the asteroid in the space-time evolution of all elements of the studied dynamic system.

Numerical modeling of physical processes leading to the destruction of meteoroids in the Earth’s atmosphere
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 4, pp. 835-851Within the framework of the actual problem of comet-asteroid danger, the physical processes causing the destruction and fragmentation of meteor bodies in the Earth’s atmosphere are numerically investigated. Based on the developed physicalmathematical models that determines the movements of space objects of natural origin in the atmosphere and their interaction with it, the fall of three, one of the largest and by some parameters unusual bolides in the history of meteoritics, are considered: Tunguska, Vitim and Chelyabinsk. Their singularity lies in the absence of any material meteorite remains and craters in the area of the alleged crash site for the first two bodies and the non-detection, as it is assumed, of the main mother body for the third body (due to the too small amount of mass of the fallen fragments compared to the estimated mass). The effect of aerodynamic loads and heat flows on these bodies are studied, which leads to intensive surface mass loss and possible mechanical destruction. The velocities of the studied celestial bodies and the change in their masses are determined from the modernized system of equations of the theory of meteoric physics. An important factor that is taken into account here is the variability of the meteorite mass entrainment parameter under the action of heat fluxes (radiation and convective) along the flight path. The process of fragmentation of meteoroids in this paper is considered within the framework of a progressive crushing model based on the statistical theory of strength, taking into account the influence of the scale factor on the ultimate strength of objects. The phenomena and effects arising at various kinematic and physical parameters of each of these bodies are revealed. In particular, the change in the ballistics of their flight in the denser layers of the atmosphere, consisting in the transition from the fall mode to the ascent mode. At the same time, the following scenarios of the event can be realized: 1) the return of the body back to outer space at its residual velocity greater than the second cosmic one; 2) the transition of the body to the orbit of the Earth satellite at a residual velocity greater than the first cosmic one; 3) at lower values of the residual velocity of the body, its return after some time to the fall mode and falling out at a considerable distance from the intended crash site. It is the implementation of one of these three scenarios of the event that explains, for example, the absence of material traces, including craters, in the case of the Tunguska bolide in the vicinity of the forest collapse. Assumptions about the possibility of such scenarios have been made earlier by other authors, and in this paper their implementation is confirmed by the results of numerical calculations.

Three-dimensional modelling of turbulent transfer in the atmospheric surface layer using the theory of contrast structures
Computer Research and Modeling, 2016, v. 8, no. 2, pp. 355-367Views (last year): 3. Citations: 1 (RSCI).A three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic model to describe the spatial patterns of wind and turbulence characteristics in the atmospheric surface layer over inhomogeneous vegetation cover is presented. To describe the interaction of air flow with vegetation the theory of contrast structures is used. The numerical experiments provided by a developed model to assess the impact of small clear-cutting on wind and turbulent regime in the atmospheric surface layer showed a significant influence of heterogeneous vegetation on the wind field and the turbulent exchange processes between the land surface and the atmosphere. Obtained results give a reasonable agreement with field experimental data and results of numerical experiments provided using alternative models.
