CABARET scheme implementation for free shear layer modeling
Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 6, pp. 881-903Views (last year): 17.In present paper we reexamine the properties of CABARET numerical scheme formulated for a weakly compressible fluid flow basing the results of free shear layer modeling. Kelvin–Helmholtz instability and successive generation of two-dimensional turbulence provide a wide field for a scheme analysis including temporal evolution of the integral energy and enstrophy curves, the vorticity patterns and energy spectra, as well as the dispersion relation for the instability increment. The most part of calculations is performed for Reynolds number $\text{Re} = 4 \times 10^5$ for square grids sequentially refined in the range of $128^2-2048^2$ nodes. An attention is paid to the problem of underresolved layers generating a spurious vortex during the vorticity layers roll-up. This phenomenon takes place only on a coarse grid with $128^2$ nodes, while the fully regularized evolution pattern of vorticity appears only when approaching $1024^2$-node grid. We also discuss the vorticity resolution properties of grids used with respect to dimensional estimates for the eddies at the borders of the inertial interval, showing that the available range of grids appears to be sufficient for a good resolution of small–scale vorticity patches. Nevertheless, we claim for the convergence achieved for the domains occupied by large-scale structures.
The generated turbulence evolution is consistent with theoretical concepts imposing the emergence of large vortices, which collect all the kinetic energy of motion, and solitary small-scale eddies. The latter resemble the coherent structures surviving in the filamentation process and almost noninteracting with other scales. The dissipative characteristics of numerical method employed are discussed in terms of kinetic energy dissipation rate calculated directly and basing theoretical laws for incompressible (via enstrophy curves) and compressible (with respect to the strain rate tensor and dilatation) fluid models. The asymptotic behavior of the kinetic energy and enstrophy cascades comply with two-dimensional turbulence laws $E(k) \propto k^{−3}, \omega^2(k) \propto k^{−1}$. Considering the instability increment as a function of dimensionless wave number shows a good agreement with other papers, however, commonly used method of instability growth rate calculation is not always accurate, so some modification is proposed. Thus, the implemented CABARET scheme possessing remarkably small numerical dissipation and good vorticity resolution is quite competitive approach compared to other high-order accuracy methods

Numerical solution of Urysohn type nonlinear second kind integral equations by successive quadratures using embedded Dormand and Prince scheme 5(4)
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 2, pp. 275-300We present the iterative algorithm that solves numerically both Urysohn type Fredholm and Volterra nonlinear one-dimensional nonsingular integral equations of the second kind to a specified, modest user-defined accuracy. The algorithm is based on descending recursive sequence of quadratures. Convergence of numerical scheme is guaranteed by fixed-point theorems. Picard’s method of integrating successive approximations is of great importance for the existence theory of integral equations but surprisingly very little appears on numerical algorithms for its direct implementation in the literature. We show that successive approximations method can be readily employed in numerical solution of integral equations. By that the quadrature algorithm is thoroughly designed. It is based on the explicit form of fifth-order embedded Runge–Kutta rule with adaptive step-size self-control. Since local error estimates may be cheaply obtained, continuous monitoring of the quadrature makes it possible to create very accurate automatic numerical schemes and to reduce considerably the main drawback of Picard iterations namely the extremely large amount of computations with increasing recursion depth. Our algorithm is organized so that as compared to most approaches the nonlinearity of integral equations does not induce any additional computational difficulties, it is very simple to apply and to make a program realization. Our algorithm exhibits some features of universality. First, it should be stressed that the method is as easy to apply to nonlinear as to linear equations of both Fredholm and Volterra kind. Second, the algorithm is equipped by stopping rules by which the calculations may to considerable extent be controlled automatically. A compact C++-code of described algorithm is presented. Our program realization is self-consistent: it demands no preliminary calculations, no external libraries and no additional memory is needed. Numerical examples are provided to show applicability, efficiency, robustness and accuracy of our approach.

Image noise removal method based on nonconvex total generalized variation and primal-dual algorithm
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 3, pp. 527-541In various applications, i. e., astronomical imaging, electron microscopy, and tomography, images are often damaged by Poisson noise. At the same time, the thermal motion leads to Gaussian noise. Therefore, in such applications, the image is usually corrupted by mixed Poisson – Gaussian noise.
In this paper, we propose a novel method for recovering images corrupted by mixed Poisson – Gaussian noise. In the proposed method, we develop a total variation-based model connected with the nonconvex function and the total generalized variation regularization, which overcomes the staircase artifacts and maintains neat edges.
Numerically, we employ the primal-dual method combined with the classical iteratively reweighted $l_1$ algorithm to solve our minimization problem. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate the superiority of our proposed model and algorithm for mixed Poisson – Gaussian removal to state-of-the-art numerical methods.

Optimization of task package execution planning in multi-stage systems under restrictions and the formation of sets
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 5, pp. 917-946Modern methods of complex planning the execution of task packages in multistage systems are characterized by the presence of restrictions on the dimension of the problem being solved, the impossibility of guaranteed obtaining effective solutions for various values of its input parameters, as well as the impossibility of registration the conditions for the formation of sets from the result and the restriction on the interval duration of time of the system operating. The decomposition of the generalized function of the system into a set of hierarchically interconnected subfunctions is implemented to solve the problem of scheduling the execution of task packages with generating sets of results and the restriction on the interval duration of time for the functioning of the system. The use of decomposition made it possible to employ the hierarchical approach for planning the execution of task packages in multistage systems, which provides the determination of decisions by the composition of task groups at the first level of the hierarchy decisions by the composition of task packages groups executed during time intervals of limited duration at the second level and schedules for executing packages at the third level the hierarchy. In order to evaluate decisions on the composition of packages, the results of their execution, obtained during the specified time intervals, are distributed among the packages. The apparatus of the theory of hierarchical games is used to determine complex solutions. A model of a hierarchical game for making decisions by the compositions of packages, groups of packages and schedules of executing packages is built, which is a system of hierarchically interconnected criteria for optimizing decisions. The model registers the condition for the formation of sets from the results of the execution of task packages and restriction on duration of time intervals of its operating. The problem of determining the compositions of task packages and groups of task packages is NP-hard; therefore, its solution requires the use of approximate optimization methods. In order to optimize groups of task packages, the construction of a method for formulating initial solutions by their compositions has been implemented, which are further optimized. Moreover, a algorithm for distributing the results of executing task packages obtained during time intervals of limited duration by sets is formulated. The method of local solutions optimization by composition of packages groups, in accordance with which packages are excluded from groups, the results of which are not included in sets, and packages, that aren’t included in any group, is proposed. The software implementation of the considered method of complex optimization of the compositions of task packages, groups of task packages, and schedules for executing task packages from groups (including the implementation of the method for optimizing the compositions of groups of task packages) has been performed. With its use, studies of the features of the considered planning task are carried out. Conclusion are formulated concerning the dependence of the efficiency of scheduling the execution of task packages in multistage system under the introduced conditions from the input parameters of the problem. The use of the method of local optimization of the compositions of groups of task packages allows to increase the number of formed sets from the results of task execution in packages from groups by 60% in comparison with fixed groups (which do not imply optimization).

Mathematical modeling of the age groups of employed peoples by the example of the southern regions of the Russian Far East
Computer Research and Modeling, 2016, v. 8, no. 5, pp. 787-801Views (last year): 4. Citations: 3 (RSCI).The article focuses on a nonlinear mathematical model that describes the interaction of the different age groups of the employed population. The interactions are treated by analogy with population relationship (competition, discrimination, assistance, oppression, etc). Under interaction of peoples we mean the generalized social and economic mechanisms that cause related changes in the number of employees of different age groups. Three age groups of the employed population are considered. It is young specialists (15–29 years), workers with experience (30–49 years), the employees of pre-retirement and retirement age (50 and older). The estimation of model’s parameters for the southern regions of the Far Eastern Federal District (FEFD) is executed by statistical data. Analysis of model scenarios allows us to conclude the observed number fluctuations of the different ages employees on the background of a stable total employed population may be a consequence of complex interactions between these groups of peoples. Computational experiments with the obtained values of the parameters allowed us to calculate the rate of decline and the aging of the working population and to determine the nature of the interaction between the age groups of employees that are not directly as reflected in the statistics. It was found that in FEFD the employed of 50 years and older are discriminated against by the young workers under 29, employed up to 29 and 30–49 years are in a partnership. It is shown in most developed regions (Primorsky and Khabarovsk Krai) there is “uniform” competition among different age groups of the employed population. For Primorsky Krai we were able to identify the mixing effect dynamics. It is a typical situation for systems in a state of structural adjustment. This effect is reflected in the fact the long cycles of employed population form with a significant decrease in migration inflows of employees 30–49 years. Besides, the change of migration is accompanied by a change of interaction type — from employment discrimination by the oldest of middle generation to discrimination by the middle of older generation. In less developed regions (Amur, Magadan and Jewish Autonomous Regions) there are lower values of migration balance of almost all age groups and discrimination by young workers up 29 years of other age groups and employment discrimination 30–49 years of the older generation.

Diffusion–reaction–advection equations for the predator–prey system in a heterogeneous environment
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 6, pp. 1161-1176We analyze variants of considering the inhomogeneity of the environment in computer modeling of the dynamics of a predator and prey based on a system of reaction-diffusion–advection equations. The local interaction of species (reaction terms) is described by the logistic law for the prey and the Beddington –DeAngelis functional response, special cases of which are the Holling type II functional response and the Arditi – Ginzburg model. We consider a one-dimensional problem in space for a heterogeneous resource (carrying capacity) and three types of taxis (the prey to resource and from the predator, the predator to the prey). An analytical approach is used to study the stability of stationary solutions in the case of local interaction (diffusionless approach). We employ the method of lines to study diffusion and advective processes. A comparison of the critical values of the mortality parameter of predators is given. Analysis showed that at constant coefficients in the Beddington –DeAngelis model, critical values are variable along the spatial coordinate, while we do not observe this effect for the Arditi –Ginzburg model. We propose a modification of the reaction terms, which makes it possible to take into account the heterogeneity of the resource. Numerical results on the dynamics of species for large and small migration coefficients are presented, demonstrating a decrease in the influence of the species of local members on the emerging spatio-temporal distributions of populations. Bifurcation transitions are analyzed when changing the parameters of diffusion–advection and reaction terms.

Сhaotic flow evolution arising in a body force field
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 4, pp. 883-912This article presents the results of an analytical and computer study of the chaotic evolution of a regular velocity field generated by a large-scale harmonic forcing. The authors obtained an analytical solution for the flow stream function and its derivative quantities (velocity, vorticity, kinetic energy, enstrophy and palinstrophy). Numerical modeling of the flow evolution was carried out using the OpenFOAM software package based on incompressible model, as well as two inhouse implementations of CABARET and McCormack methods employing nearly incompressible formulation. Calculations were carried out on a sequence of nested meshes with 642, 1282, 2562, 5122, 10242 cells for two characteristic (asymptotic) Reynolds numbers characterizing laminar and turbulent evolution of the flow, respectively. Simulations show that blow-up of the analytical solution takes place in both cases. The energy characteristics of the flow are discussed relying upon the energy curves as well as the dissipation rates. For the fine mesh, this quantity turns out to be several orders of magnitude less than its hydrodynamic (viscous) counterpart. Destruction of the regular flow structure is observed for any of the numerical methods, including at the late stages of laminar evolution, when numerically obtained distributions are close to analytics. It can be assumed that the prerequisite for the development of instability is the error accumulated during the calculation process. This error leads to unevenness in the distribution of vorticity and, as a consequence, to the variance vortex intensity and finally leads to chaotization of the flow. To study the processes of vorticity production, we used two integral vorticity-based quantities — integral enstrophy ($\zeta$) and palinstrophy $(P)$. The formulation of the problem with periodic boundary conditions allows us to establish a simple connection between these quantities. In addition, $\zeta$ can act as a measure of the eddy resolution of the numerical method, and palinstrophy determines the degree of production of small-scale vorticity.

A hybrid regularizers approach based model for restoring image corrupted by Poisson noise
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 5, pp. 965-978Image denoising is one of the fundamental problems in digital image processing. This problem usually refers to the reconstruction of an image from an observed image degraded by noise. There are many factors that cause this degradation such as transceiver equipment, or environmental influences, etc. In order to obtain higher quality images, many methods have been proposed for image denoising problem. Most image denoising method are based on total variation (TV) regularization to develop efficient algorithms for solving the related optimization problem. TV-based models have become a standard technique in image restoration with the ability to preserve image sharpness.
In this paper, we focus on Poisson noise usually appearing in photon-counting devices. We propose an effective regularization model based on combination of first-order and fractional-order total variation for image reconstruction corrupted by Poisson noise. The proposed model allows us to eliminate noise while edge preserving. An efficient alternating minimization algorithm is employed to solve the optimization problem. Finally, provided numerical results show that our proposed model can preserve more details and get higher image visual quality than recent state-of-the-art methods.

Image classification based on deep learning with automatic relevance determination and structured Bayesian pruning
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 4, pp. 927-938Deep learning’s power stems from complex architectures; however, these can lead to overfitting, where models memorize training data and fail to generalize to unseen examples. This paper proposes a novel probabilistic approach to mitigate this issue. We introduce two key elements: Truncated Log-Uniform Prior and Truncated Log-Normal Variational Approximation, and Automatic Relevance Determination (ARD) with Bayesian Deep Neural Networks (BDNNs). Within the probabilistic framework, we employ a specially designed truncated log-uniform prior for noise. This prior acts as a regularizer, guiding the learning process towards simpler solutions and reducing overfitting. Additionally, a truncated log-normal variational approximation is used for efficient handling of the complex probability distributions inherent in deep learning models. ARD automatically identifies and removes irrelevant features or weights within a model. By integrating ARD with BDNNs, where weights have a probability distribution, we achieve a variational bound similar to the popular variational dropout technique. Dropout randomly drops neurons during training, encouraging the model not to rely heavily on any single feature. Our approach with ARD achieves similar benefits without the randomness of dropout, potentially leading to more stable training.
To evaluate our approach, we have tested the model on two datasets: the Canadian Institute For Advanced Research (CIFAR-10) for image classification and a dataset of Macroscopic Images of Wood, which is compiled from multiple macroscopic images of wood datasets. Our method is applied to established architectures like Visual Geometry Group (VGG) and Residual Network (ResNet). The results demonstrate significant improvements. The model reduced overfitting while maintaining, or even improving, the accuracy of the network’s predictions on classification tasks. This validates the effectiveness of our approach in enhancing the performance and generalization capabilities of deep learning models.
