On the construction and properties of WENO schemes order five, seven, nine, eleven and thirteen. Part 1. Construction and stability
Computer Research and Modeling, 2016, v. 8, no. 5, pp. 721-753Views (last year): 9. Citations: 1 (RSCI).Currently, different nonlinear numerical schemes of the spatial approximation are used in numerical simulation of boundary value problems for hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations (e. g. gas dynamics equations, MHD, deformable rigid body, etc.). This is due to the need to improve the order of accuracy and perform simulation of discontinuous solutions that are often occurring in such systems. The need for non-linear schemes is followed from the barrier theorem of S. K. Godunov that states the impossibility of constructing a linear scheme for monotone approximation of such equations with approximation order two or greater. One of the most accurate non-linear type schemes are ENO (essentially non oscillating) and their modifications, including WENO (weighted, essentially non oscillating) scemes. The last received the most widespread, since the same stencil width has a higher order of approximation than the ENO scheme. The benefit of ENO and WENO schemes is the ability to maintain a high-order approximation to the areas of non-monotonic solutions. The main difficulty of the analysis of such schemes comes from the fact that they themselves are nonlinear and are used to approximate the nonlinear equations. In particular, the linear stability condition was obtained earlier only for WENO5 scheme (fifth-order approximation on smooth solutions) and it is a numerical one. In this paper we consider the problem of construction and stability for WENO5, WENO7, WENO9, WENO11, and WENO13 finite volume schemes for the Hopf equation. In the first part of this article we discuss WENO methods in general, and give the explicit expressions for the coefficients of the polynomial weights and linear combinations required to build these schemes. We prove a series of assertions that can make conclusions about the order of approximation depending on the type of local solutions. Stability analysis is carried out on the basis of the principle of frozen coefficients. The cases of a smooth and discontinuous behavior of solutions in the field of linearization with frozen coefficients on the faces of the final volume and spectra of the schemes are analyzed for these cases. We prove the linear stability conditions for a variety of Runge-Kutta methods applied to WENO schemes. As a result, our research provides guidance on choosing the best possible stability parameter, which has the smallest effect on the nonlinear properties of the schemes. The convergence of the schemes is followed from the analysis.

The global rate of convergence for optimal tensor methods in smooth convex optimization
Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 6, pp. 737-753Views (last year): 75.In this work we consider Monteiro – Svaiter accelerated hybrid proximal extragradient (A-HPE) framework and accelerated Newton proximal extragradient (A-NPE) framework. The last framework contains an optimal method for rather smooth convex optimization problems with second-order oracle. We generalize A-NPE framework for higher order derivative oracle (schemes). We replace Newton’s type step in A-NPE that was used for auxiliary problem by Newton’s regularized (tensor) type step (Yu. Nesterov, 2018). Moreover we generalize large step A-HPE/A-NPE framework by replacing Monteiro – Svaiter’s large step condition so that this framework could work for high-order schemes. The main contribution of the paper is as follows: we propose optimal highorder methods for convex optimization problems. As far as we know for that moment there exist only zero, first and second order optimal methods that work according to the lower bounds. For higher order schemes there exists a gap between the lower bounds (Arjevani, Shamir, Shiff, 2017) and existing high-order (tensor) methods (Nesterov – Polyak, 2006; Yu.Nesterov, 2008; M. Baes, 2009; Yu.Nesterov, 2018). Asymptotically the ratio of the rates of convergences for the best existing methods and lower bounds is about 1.5. In this work we eliminate this gap and show that lower bounds are tight. We also consider rather smooth strongly convex optimization problems and show how to generalize the proposed methods to this case. The basic idea is to use restart technique until iteration sequence reach the region of quadratic convergence of Newton method and then use Newton method. One can show that the considered method converges with optimal rates up to a logarithmic factor. Note, that proposed in this work technique can be generalized in the case when we can’t solve auxiliary problem exactly, moreover we can’t even calculate the derivatives of the functional exactly. Moreover, the proposed technique can be generalized to the composite optimization problems and in particular to the constraint convex optimization problems. We also formulate a list of open questions that arise around the main result of this paper (optimal universal method of high order e.t.c.).

Numerical solution to a two-dimensional nonlinear heat equation using radial basis functions
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 1, pp. 9-22The paper presents a numerical solution to the heat wave motion problem for a degenerate second-order nonlinear parabolic equation with a source term. The nonlinearity is conditioned by the power dependence of the heat conduction coefficient on temperature. The problem for the case of two spatial variables is considered with the boundary condition specifying the heat wave motion law. A new solution algorithm based on an expansion in radial basis functions and the boundary element method is proposed. The solution is constructed stepwise in time with finite difference time approximation. At each time step, a boundary value problem for the Poisson equation corresponding to the original equation at a fixed time is solved. The solution to this problem is constructed iteratively as the sum of a particular solution to the nonhomogeneous equation and a solution to the corresponding homogeneous equation satisfying the boundary conditions. The homogeneous equation is solved by the boundary element method. The particular solution is sought by the collocation method using inhomogeneity expansion in radial basis functions. The calculation algorithm is optimized by parallelizing the computations. The algorithm is implemented as a program written in the C++ language. The parallel computations are organized by using the OpenCL standard, and this allows one to run the same parallel code either on multi-core CPUs or on graphic CPUs. Test cases are solved to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed solution method and the correctness of the developed computational technique. The calculation results are compared with known exact solutions, as well as with the results we obtained earlier. The accuracy of the solutions and the calculation time are estimated. The effectiveness of using various systems of radial basis functions to solve the problems under study is analyzed. The most suitable system of functions is selected. The implemented complex computational experiment shows higher calculation accuracy of the proposed new algorithm than that of the previously developed one.

Direct multiplicative methods for sparse matrices. Quadratic programming
Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 4, pp. 407-420Views (last year): 32.A numerically stable direct multiplicative method for solving systems of linear equations that takes into account the sparseness of matrices presented in a packed form is considered. The advantage of the method is the calculation of the Cholesky factors for a positive definite matrix of the system of equations and its solution within the framework of one procedure. And also in the possibility of minimizing the filling of the main rows of multipliers without losing the accuracy of the results, and no changes are made to the position of the next processed row of the matrix, which allows using static data storage formats. The solution of the system of linear equations by a direct multiplicative algorithm is, like the solution with LU-decomposition, just another scheme for implementing the Gaussian elimination method.
The calculation of the Cholesky factors for a positive definite matrix of the system and its solution underlies the construction of a new mathematical formulation of the unconditional problem of quadratic programming and a new form of specifying necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality that are quite simple and are used in this paper to construct a new mathematical formulation for the problem of quadratic programming on a polyhedral set of constraints, which is the problem of finding the minimum distance between the origin ordinate and polyhedral boundary by means of a set of constraints and linear algebra dimensional geometry.
To determine the distance, it is proposed to apply the known exact method based on solving systems of linear equations whose dimension is not higher than the number of variables of the objective function. The distances are determined by the construction of perpendiculars to the faces of a polyhedron of different dimensions. To reduce the number of faces examined, the proposed method involves a special order of sorting the faces. Only the faces containing the vertex closest to the point of the unconditional extremum and visible from this point are subject to investigation. In the case of the presence of several nearest equidistant vertices, we investigate a face containing all these vertices and faces of smaller dimension that have at least two common nearest vertices with the first face.

Modeling the structure of a complex system based on estimation of the measure of interaction of subsystems
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 4, pp. 707-719The using of determining the measure of interaction between channels when choosing the configuration structure of a control system for complex dynamic objects is considered in the work. The main methods for determining the measure of interaction between subsystems of complex control systems based on the methods RGA (Relative Gain Array), Dynamic RGA, HIIA (Hankel Interaction Index Array), PM (Participation matrix) are presented. When choosing a control configuration, simple configurations are preferable, as they are simple in design, maintenance and more resistant to failures. However, complex configurations provide higher performance control systems. Processes in large dynamic objects are characterized by a high degree of interaction between process variables. For the design of the control structure interaction measures are used, namely, the selection of the control structure and the decision on the configuration of the controller. The choice of control structure is to determine which dynamic connections should be used to design the controller. When a structure is selected, connections can be used to configure the controller. For large systems, it is proposed to pre-group the components of the vectors of input and output signals of the actuators and sensitive elements into sets in which the number of variables decreases significantly in order to select a control structure. A quantitative estimation of the decentralization of the control system based on minimizing the sum of the off-diagonal elements of the PM matrix is given. An example of estimation the measure of interaction between components of strong coupled subsystems and the measure of interaction between components of weak coupled subsystems is given. A quantitative estimation is given of neglecting the interaction of components of weak coupled subsystems. The construction of a weighted graph for visualizing the interaction of the subsystems of a complex system is considered. A method for the formation of the controllability gramian on the vector of output signals that is invariant to state vector transformations is proposed in the paper. An example of the decomposition of the stabilization system of the components of the flying vehicle angular velocity vector is given. The estimation of measures of the mutual influence of processes in the channels of control systems makes it possible to increase the reliability of the systems when accounting for the use of analytical redundancy of information from various devices, which reduces the mass and energy consumption. Methods for assessing measures of the interaction of processes in subsystems of control systems can be used in the design of complex systems, for example, motion control systems, orientation and stabilization systems of vehicles.

An approach for the nonconvex uniformly concave structured saddle point problem
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 2, pp. 225-237Recently, saddle point problems have received much attention due to their powerful modeling capability for a lot of problems from diverse domains. Applications of these problems occur in many applied areas, such as robust optimization, distributed optimization, game theory, and many applications in machine learning such as empirical risk minimization and generative adversarial networks training. Therefore, many researchers have actively worked on developing numerical methods for solving saddle point problems in many different settings. This paper is devoted to developing a numerical method for solving saddle point problems in the nonconvex uniformly-concave setting. We study a general class of saddle point problems with composite structure and H\"older-continuous higher-order derivatives. To solve the problem under consideration, we propose an approach in which we reduce the problem to a combination of two auxiliary optimization problems separately for each group of variables, the outer minimization problem w.r.t. primal variables, and the inner maximization problem w.r.t the dual variables. For solving the outer minimization problem, we use the Adaptive Gradient Method, which is applicable for nonconvex problems and also works with an inexact oracle that is generated by approximately solving the inner problem. For solving the inner maximization problem, we use the Restarted Unified Acceleration Framework, which is a framework that unifies the high-order acceleration methods for minimizing a convex function that has H\"older-continuous higher-order derivatives. Separate complexity bounds are provided for the number of calls to the first-order oracles for the outer minimization problem and higher-order oracles for the inner maximization problem. Moreover, the complexity of the whole proposed approach is then estimated.

Bicompact schemes for the HOLO algorithm for joint solution of the transport equation and the energy equation
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 6, pp. 1429-1448The numerical solving of the system of high-temperature radiative gas dynamics (HTRGD) equations is a computationally laborious task, since the interaction of radiation with matter is nonlinear and non-local. The radiation absorption coefficients depend on temperature, and the temperature field is determined by both gas-dynamic processes and radiation transport. The method of splitting into physical processes is usually used to solve the HTRGD system, one of the blocks consists of a joint solving of the radiative transport equation and the energy balance equation of matter under known pressure and temperature fields. Usually difference schemes with orders of convergence no higher than the second are used to solve this block. Due to computer memory limitations it is necessary to use not too detailed grids to solve complex technical problems. This increases the requirements for the order of approximation of difference schemes. In this work, bicompact schemes of a high order of approximation for the algorithm for the joint solution of the radiative transport equation and the energy balance equation are implemented for the first time. The proposed method can be applied to solve a wide range of practical problems, as it has high accuracy and it is suitable for solving problems with coefficient discontinuities. The non-linearity of the problem and the use of an implicit scheme lead to an iterative process that may slowly converge. In this paper, we use a multiplicative HOLO algorithm named the quasi-diffusion method by V.Ya.Goldin. The key idea of HOLO algorithms is the joint solving of high order (HO) and low order (LO) equations. The high-order equation (HO) is the radiative transport equation solved in the energy multigroup approximation, the system of quasi-diffusion equations in the multigroup approximation (LO1) is obtained by averaging HO equations over the angular variable. The next step is averaging over energy, resulting in an effective one-group system of quasi-diffusion equations (LO2), which is solved jointly with the energy equation. The solutions obtained at each stage of the HOLO algorithm are closely related that ultimately leads to an acceleration of the convergence of the iterative process. Difference schemes constructed by the method of lines within one cell are proposed for each of the stages of the HOLO algorithm. The schemes have the fourth order of approximation in space and the third order of approximation in time. Schemes for the transport equation were developed by B.V. Rogov and his colleagues, the schemes for the LO1 and LO2 equations were developed by the authors. An analytical test is constructed to demonstrate the declared orders of convergence. Various options for setting boundary conditions are considered and their influence on the order of convergence in time and space is studied.

On the stability of the gravitational system of many bodies
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 3, pp. 487-511In this paper, a gravitational system is understood as a set of point bodies that interact according to Newton's law of attraction and have a negative value of the total energy. The question of the stability (nonstability) of a gravitational system of general position is discussed by direct computational experiment. A gravitational system of general position is a system in which the masses, initial positions, and velocities of bodies are chosen randomly from given ranges. A new method for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations at large time intervals has been developed for the computational experiment. The proposed method allowed, on the one hand, to ensure the fulfillment of all conservation laws by a suitable correction of solutions, on the other hand, to use standard methods for the numerical solution of systems of differential equations of low approximation order. Within the framework of this method, the trajectory of a gravitational system in phase space is assembled from parts, the duration of each of which can be macroscopic. The constructed trajectory, generally speaking, is discontinuous, and the points of joining of individual pieces of the trajectory act as branch points. In connection with the latter circumstance, the proposed method, in part, can be attributed to the class of Monte Carlo methods. The general conclusion of a series of computational experiments has shown that gravitational systems of general position with a number of bodies of 3 or more, generally speaking, are unstable. In the framework of the proposed method, special cases of zero-equal angular momentum of a gravitational system with a number of bodies of 3 or more, as well as the problem of motion of two bodies, are specially considered. The case of numerical modeling of the dynamics of the solar system in time is considered separately. From the standpoint of computational experiments based on analytical methods, as well as direct numerical methods of high-order approximation (10 and higher), the stability of the solar system was previously demonstrated at an interval of five billion years or more. Due to the limitations on the available computational resources, the stability of the dynamics of the planets of the solar system within the framework of the proposed method was confirmed for a period of ten million years. With the help of a computational experiment, one of the possible scenarios for the disintegration of the solar systems is also considered.

Linearly convergent gradient-free methods for minimization of parabolic approximation
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 2, pp. 239-255Finding the global minimum of a nonconvex function is one of the key and most difficult problems of the modern optimization. In this paper we consider special classes of nonconvex problems which have a clear and distinct global minimum.
In the first part of the paper we consider two classes of «good» nonconvex functions, which can be bounded below and above by a parabolic function. This class of problems has not been widely studied in the literature, although it is rather interesting from an applied point of view. Moreover, for such problems first-order and higher-order methods may be completely ineffective in finding a global minimum. This is due to the fact that the function may oscillate heavily or may be very noisy. Therefore, our new methods use only zero-order information and are based on grid search. The size and fineness of this grid, and hence the guarantee of convergence speed and oracle complexity, depend on the «goodness» of the problem. In particular, we show that if the function is bounded by fairly close parabolic functions, then the complexity is independent of the dimension of the problem. We show that our new methods converge with a linear convergence rate $\log(1/\varepsilon)$ to a global minimum on the cube.
In the second part of the paper, we consider the nonconvex optimization problem from a different angle. We assume that the target minimizing function is the sum of the convex quadratic problem and a nonconvex «noise» function proportional to the distance to the global solution. Considering functions with such noise assumptions for zero-order methods is new in the literature. For such a problem, we use the classical gradient-free approach with gradient approximation through finite differences. We show how the convergence analysis for our problems can be reduced to the standard analysis for convex optimization problems. In particular, we achieve a linear convergence rate for such problems as well.
Experimental results confirm the efficiency and practical applicability of all the obtained methods.
