Numerical simulation of the backward influence of a polymer additive on the Kolmogorov flow
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 5, pp. 1093-1105

A numerical method is proposed that approximates the equations of the dynamics of a weakly compressible viscous flow in the presence of a polymer component of the flow. The behavior of the flow under the influence of a static external periodic force in a periodic square cell is investigated. The methodology is based on a hybrid approach. The hydrodynamics of the flow is described by a system of Navier – Stokes equations and is numerically approximated by the linearized Godunov method. The polymer field is described by a system of equations for the vector of stretching of polymer molecules $\bf R$, which is numerically approximated by the Kurganov – Tedmor method. The choice of model relationships in the development of a numerical methodology and the selection of modeling parameters made it possible to qualitatively model and study the regime of elastic turbulence at low Reynolds $Re \sim 10^{-1}$. The polymer solution flow dynamics equations differ from the Newtonian fluid dynamics equations by the presence on the right side of the terms describing the forces acting on the polymer component part. The proportionality coefficient $A$ for these terms characterizes the backward influence degree of the polymers number on the flow. The article examines in detail how the flow and its characteristics change depending on the given coefficient. It is shown that with its growth, the flow becomes more chaotic. The flow energy spectra and the spectra of the polymers stretching field are constructed for different values of $A$. In the spectra, an inertial sub-range of the energy cascade is traced for the flow velocity with an indicator $k \sim −4$, for the cascade of polymer molecules stretches with an indicator $−1.6$.

  2. WENO schemes (weighted, essentially non oscillating) are currently having a wide range of applications as approximate high order schemes for discontinuous solutions of partial differential equations. These schemes are used for direct numerical simulation (DNS) and large eddy simmulation in the gas dynamic problems, problems for DNS in MHD and even neutron kinetics. This work is dedicated to clarify some characteristics of WENO schemes and numerical simulation of specific tasks. Results of the simulations can be used to clarify the field of application of these schemes. The first part of the work contained proofs of the approximation properties, stability and convergence of WENO5, WENO7, WENO9, WENO11 and WENO13 schemes. In the second part of the work the modified wave number analysis is conducted that allows to conclude the dispersion and dissipative properties of schemes. Further, a numerical simulation of a number of specific problems for hyperbolic equations is conducted, namely for advection equations (one-dimensional and two-dimensional), Hopf equation, Burgers equation (with low dissipation) and equations of non viscous gas dynamics (onedimensional and two-dimensional). For each problem that is implying a smooth solution, the practical calculation of the order of approximation via Runge method is performed. The influence of a time step on nonlinear properties of the schemes is analyzed experimentally in all problems and cross checked with the first part of the paper. In particular, the advection equations of a discontinuous function and Hopf equations show that the failure of the recommendations from the first part of the paper leads first to an increase in total variation of the solution and then the approximation is decreased by the non-linear dissipative mechanics of the schemes. Dissipation of randomly distributed initial conditions in a periodic domain for one-dimensional Burgers equation is conducted and a comparison with the spectral method is performed. It is concluded that the WENO7–WENO13 schemes are suitable for direct numerical simulation of turbulence. At the end we demonstrate the possibility of the schemes to be used in solution of initial-boundary value problems for equations of non viscous gas dynamics: Rayleigh–Taylor instability and the reflection of the shock wave from a wedge with the formation a complex configuration of shock waves and discontinuities.

On contact instabilities of viscoplastic fluids in three-dimensional setting
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 4, pp. 431-444

The Richtmyer–Meshkov and the Rayleigh–Taylor instabilities of viscoplastic (or the Bingham) fluids are studied in the three–dimensional formulation of the problem. A numerical modeling of the intermixing of two fluids with different rheology, whose densities differ twice, as a result of instabilities development process has been carried out. The development of the Richtmyer–Meshkov and the Rayleigh–Taylor instabilities of the Bingham fluids is analyzed utilizing the MacCormack and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) methods to reconstruct the interface during the process. Both the results of numerical simulation of the named instabilities of the Bingham liquids and their comparison with theory and the results of the Newtonian fluid simulation are presented. Critical amplitude of the initial perturbation of the contact boundary velocity field at which the development of instabilities begins was estimated. This critical amplitude presents because of the yield stress exists in the Bingham fluids. Results of numerical calculations show that the yield stress of viscoplastic fluids essentially affects the nature of the development of both Rayleigh–Taylor and Richtmyer–Meshkov instabilities. If the amplitude of the initial perturbation is less than the critical value, then the perturbation decays relatively quickly, and no instability develops. When the initial perturbation exceeds the critical amplitude, the nature of the instability development resembles that of the Newtonian fluid. In a case of the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability, the critical amplitudes of the initial perturbation of the contact boundary at different values of the yield stress are estimated. There is a distinction in behavior of the non-Newtonian fluid in a plane case: with the same value of the yield stress in three-dimensional geometry, the range of the amplitude values of the initial perturbation, when fluid starts to transit from rest to motion, is significantly narrower. In addition, it is shown that the critical amplitude of the initial perturbation of the contact boundary for the Rayleigh–Taylor instability is lower than for the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability. This is due to the action of gravity, which helps the instability to develop and counteracts the forces of viscous friction.

Development of the water – oil interface instability in a vertical electric field
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 3, pp. 633-645

The presence of a contact boundary between water and transformer oil greatly reduces the electrical strength of the oil phase. The presence of an electric field leads to varying degrees of polarization at the interface and the appearance of a force acting on a liquid with a higher dielectric constant (water) in the direction of a liquid with a lower dielectric constant (oil). This leads to the contact surface instability development. Instability as a result of its development leads to a stream of water being drawn into oil volume and a violation of the insulating gap. In this work, we experimentally and numerically study electrohydrodynamic instability at the phase boundary between electrically weakly conductive water and transformer oil in a highly inhomogeneous electric field directed perpendicular to the contact boundary. The results of a full-scale and numerical experiment of studying of the electrohydrodynamic instability development in a strong electric field at the interface between water and transformer oil are presented. The system consists of a spherical electrode with a radius of 3.5 mm, placed in water with a conductivity of 5 $\mu S/cm$, and a thin blade electrode 0.1 mm thick, placed in transformer oil of the GK brand. The contact boundary passes at the same distance from the nearest points of the electrodes, equal to 3 mm. The work shows that at a certain electric field strength, the cone-shaped structure of water grows towards the electrode immersed in transformer oil. A numerical correspondence was obtained for both the shape of the resulting water structure (cone) during the entire growth time and the size measured from its top to the level of the initial contact boundary of phase separation. The dynamics of this structure growth has been studied. Both in numerical calculations and in experiment, it was found that the size of the resulting cone along the electrode connection line depends linearly on time.

Modeling of anisotropic convection for the binary fluid in porous medium
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 6, pp. 801-816

We study an appearance of gravitational convection in a porous medium saturated by the double-diffusive fluid. The rectangle heated from below is considered with anisotropy of media properties. We analyze Darcy – Boussinesq equations for a binary fluid with Soret effect.

Resulting system for the stream function, the deviation of temperature and concentration is cosymmetric under some additional conditions for the parameters of the problem. It means that the quiescent state (mechanical equilibrium) loses its stability and a continuous family of stationary regimes branches off. We derive explicit formulas for the critical values of the Rayleigh numbers both for temperature and concentration under these conditions of the cosymmetry. It allows to analyze monotonic instability of mechanical equilibrium, the results of corresponding computations are presented.

A finite-difference discretization of a second-order accuracy is developed with preserving of the cosymmetry of the underlying system. The derived numerical scheme is applied to analyze the stability of mechanical equilibrium.

The appearance of stationary and nonstationary convective regimes is studied. The neutral stability curves for the mechanical equilibrium are presented. The map for the plane of the Rayleigh numbers (temperature and concentration) are displayed. The impact of the parameters of thermal diffusion on the Rayleigh concentration number is established, at which the oscillating instability precedes the monotonic instability. In the general situation, when the conditions of cosymmetry are not satisfied, the derived formulas of the critical Rayleigh numbers can be used to estimate the thresholds for the convection onset.

Analysis of dissipative properties of a hybrid large-particle method for structurally complicated gas flows
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 4, pp. 757-772

We study the computational properties of a parametric class of finite-volume schemes with customizable dissipative properties with splitting by physical processes into Lagrangian, Eulerian, and the final stages (the hybrid large-particle method). The method has a second-order approximation in space and time on smooth solutions. The regularization of a numerical solution at the Lagrangian stage is performed by nonlinear correction of artificial viscosity. Regardless of the grid resolution, the artificial viscosity value tends to zero outside the zone of discontinuities and extremes in the solution. At Eulerian and final stages, primitive variables (density, velocity, and total energy) are first reconstructed by an additive combination of upwind and central approximations weighted by a flux limiter. Then numerical divergent fluxes are formed from them. In this case, discrete analogs of conservation laws are performed.

The analysis of dissipative properties of the method using known viscosity and flow limiters, as well as their linear combination, is performed. The resolution of the scheme and the quality of numerical solutions are demonstrated by examples of two-dimensional benchmarks: a gas flow around the step with Mach numbers 3, 10 and 20, the double Mach reflection of a strong shock wave, and the implosion problem. The influence of the scheme viscosity of the method on the numerical reproduction of a gases interface instability is studied. It is found that a decrease of the dissipation level in the implosion problem leads to the symmetric solution destruction and formation of a chaotic instability on the contact surface.

Numerical solutions are compared with the results of other authors obtained using higher-order approximation schemes: CABARET, HLLC (Harten Lax van Leer Contact), CFLFh (CFLF hybrid scheme), JT (centered scheme with limiter by Jiang and Tadmor), PPM (Piecewise Parabolic Method), WENO5 (weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme), RKGD (Runge –Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin), hybrid weighted nonlinear schemes CCSSR-HW4 and CCSSR-HW6. The advantages of the hybrid large-particle method include extended possibilities for solving hyperbolic and mixed types of problems, a good ratio of dissipative and dispersive properties, a combination of algorithmic simplicity and high resolution in problems with complex shock-wave structure, both instability and vortex formation at interfaces.

Сhaotic flow evolution arising in a body force field
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 4, pp. 883-912

This article presents the results of an analytical and computer study of the chaotic evolution of a regular velocity field generated by a large-scale harmonic forcing. The authors obtained an analytical solution for the flow stream function and its derivative quantities (velocity, vorticity, kinetic energy, enstrophy and palinstrophy). Numerical modeling of the flow evolution was carried out using the OpenFOAM software package based on incompressible model, as well as two inhouse implementations of CABARET and McCormack methods employing nearly incompressible formulation. Calculations were carried out on a sequence of nested meshes with 642, 1282, 2562, 5122, 10242 cells for two characteristic (asymptotic) Reynolds numbers characterizing laminar and turbulent evolution of the flow, respectively. Simulations show that blow-up of the analytical solution takes place in both cases. The energy characteristics of the flow are discussed relying upon the energy curves as well as the dissipation rates. For the fine mesh, this quantity turns out to be several orders of magnitude less than its hydrodynamic (viscous) counterpart. Destruction of the regular flow structure is observed for any of the numerical methods, including at the late stages of laminar evolution, when numerically obtained distributions are close to analytics. It can be assumed that the prerequisite for the development of instability is the error accumulated during the calculation process. This error leads to unevenness in the distribution of vorticity and, as a consequence, to the variance vortex intensity and finally leads to chaotization of the flow. To study the processes of vorticity production, we used two integral vorticity-based quantities — integral enstrophy ($\zeta$) and palinstrophy $(P)$. The formulation of the problem with periodic boundary conditions allows us to establish a simple connection between these quantities. In addition, $\zeta$ can act as a measure of the eddy resolution of the numerical method, and palinstrophy determines the degree of production of small-scale vorticity.

Numerical study of high-speed mixing layers based on a two-fluid turbulence model
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 5, pp. 1125-1142

This work is devoted to the numerical study of high-speed mixing layers of compressible flows. The problem under consideration has a wide range of applications in practical tasks and, despite its apparent simplicity, is quite complex in terms of modeling. Because in the mixing layer, as a result of the instability of the tangential discontinuity of velocities, the flow passes from laminar flow to turbulent mode. Therefore, the obtained numerical results of the considered problem strongly depend on the adequacy of the used turbulence models. In the presented work, this problem is studied based on the two-fluid approach to the problem of turbulence. This approach has arisen relatively recently and is developing quite rapidly. The main advantage of the two-fluid approach is that it leads to a closed system of equations, when, as is known, the long-standing Reynolds approach leads to an open system of equations. The paper presents the essence of the two-fluid approach for modeling a turbulent compressible medium and the methodology for numerical implementation of the proposed model. To obtain a stationary solution, the relaxation method and Prandtl boundary layer theory were applied, resulting in a simplified system of equations. In the considered problem, high-speed flows are mixed. Therefore, it is also necessary to model heat transfer, and the pressure cannot be considered constant, as is done for incompressible flows. In the numerical implementation, the convective terms in the hydrodynamic equations were approximated by the upwind scheme with the second order of accuracy in explicit form, and the diffusion terms in the right-hand sides of the equations were approximated by the central difference in implicit form. The sweep method was used to implement the obtained equations. The SIMPLE method was used to correct the velocity through the pressure. The paper investigates a two-liquid turbulence model with different initial flow turbulence intensities. The obtained numerical results showed that good agreement with the known experimental data is observed at the inlet turbulence intensity of $0.1 < I < 1 \%$. Data from known experiments, as well as the results of the $k − kL + J$ and LES models, are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed turbulence model. It is demonstrated that the two-liquid model is as accurate as known modern models and more efficient in terms of computing resources.

    Bottom stability in closed conduits
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2015, v. 7, no. 5, pp. 1061-1068

In this paper on the basis of the riverbed model proposed earlier the one-dimensional stability problem of closed flow channel with sandy bed is solved. The feature of the investigated problem is used original equation of riverbed deformations, which takes into account the influence of mechanical and granulometric bed material characteristics and the bed slope when riverbed analyzing. Another feature of the discussed problem is the consideration together with shear stress influence normal stress influence when investigating the riverbed instability. The analytical dependence determined the wave length of fast-growing bed perturbations is obtained from the solution of the sandy bed stability problem for closed flow channel. The analysis of the obtained analytical dependence is performed. It is shown that the obtained dependence generalizes the row of well-known empirical formulas: Coleman, Shulyak and Bagnold. The structure of the obtained analytical dependence denotes the existence of two hydrodynamic regimes characterized by the Froude number, at which the bed perturbations growth can strongly or weakly depend on the Froude number. Considering a natural stochasticity of the waves movement process and the presence of a definition domain of the solution with a weak dependence on the Froude numbers it can be concluded that the experimental observation of the of the bed waves movement development should lead to the data acquisition with a significant dispersion and it occurs in reality.

Solving of the Exner equation for morphologically complex bed
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 3, pp. 449-461

The Exner equation in conjunction phenomenological sediment transport models is widely used for mathematical modeling non-cohesive river bed. This approach allows to obtain an accurate solution without any difficulty if one models evolution of simple shape bed. However if one models evolution of complex shape bed with unstable soil the numerical instability occurs in some cases. It is difficult to detach this numerical instability from the natural physical instability of bed.

This paper analyses the causes of numerical instability occurring while modeling evolution of complex shape bed by using the Exner equation and phenomenological sediment rate models. The paper shows that two kinds of indeterminateness may occur while solving numerically the Exner equation closed by phenomenological model of sediment transport. The first indeterminateness occurs in the bed area where sediment transport is transit and bed is not changed. The second indeterminateness occurs at the extreme point of bed profile when the sediment rate varies and the bed remains the same. Authors performed the closure of the Exner equation by the analytical sediment transport model, which allowed to transform the Exner equation to parabolic type equation. Analysis of the obtained equation showed that it’s numerical solving does not lead to occurring of the indeterminateness mentioned above. Parabolic form of the transformed Exner equation allows to apply the effective and stable implicit central difference scheme for this equation solving.

The model problem of bed evolution in presence of periodic distribution of the bed shear stress is carried out. The authors used the explicit central difference scheme with and without filtration method application and implicit central difference scheme for numerical solution of the problem. It is shown that the explicit central difference scheme is unstable in the area of the bed profile extremum. Using the filtration method resulted to increased dissipation of the solution. The solution obtained by using the implicit central difference scheme corresponds to the distribution law of bed shear stress and is stable throughout the calculation area.
