The iterations’ number estimation for strongly polynomial linear programming algorithms
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 2, pp. 249-285A direct algorithm for solving a linear programming problem (LP), given in canonical form, is considered. The algorithm consists of two successive stages, in which the following LP problems are solved by a direct method: a non-degenerate auxiliary problem at the first stage and some problem equivalent to the original one at the second. The construction of the auxiliary problem is based on a multiplicative version of the Gaussian exclusion method, in the very structure of which there are possibilities: identification of incompatibility and linear dependence of constraints; identification of variables whose optimal values are obviously zero; the actual exclusion of direct variables and the reduction of the dimension of the space in which the solution of the original problem is determined. In the process of actual exclusion of variables, the algorithm generates a sequence of multipliers, the main rows of which form a matrix of constraints of the auxiliary problem, and the possibility of minimizing the filling of the main rows of multipliers is inherent in the very structure of direct methods. At the same time, there is no need to transfer information (basis, plan and optimal value of the objective function) to the second stage of the algorithm and apply one of the ways to eliminate looping to guarantee final convergence.
Two variants of the algorithm for solving the auxiliary problem in conjugate canonical form are presented. The first one is based on its solution by a direct algorithm in terms of the simplex method, and the second one is based on solving a problem dual to it by the simplex method. It is shown that both variants of the algorithm for the same initial data (inputs) generate the same sequence of points: the basic solution and the current dual solution of the vector of row estimates. Hence, it is concluded that the direct algorithm is an algorithm of the simplex method type. It is also shown that the comparison of numerical schemes leads to the conclusion that the direct algorithm allows to reduce, according to the cubic law, the number of arithmetic operations necessary to solve the auxiliary problem, compared with the simplex method. An estimate of the number of iterations is given.

Variance reduction for minimax problems with a small dimension of one of the variables
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 2, pp. 257-275The paper is devoted to convex-concave saddle point problems where the objective is a sum of a large number of functions. Such problems attract considerable attention of the mathematical community due to the variety of applications in machine learning, including adversarial learning, adversarial attacks and robust reinforcement learning, to name a few. The individual functions in the sum usually represent losses related to examples from a data set. Additionally, the formulation admits a possibly nonsmooth composite term. Such terms often reflect regularization in machine learning problems. We assume that the dimension of one of the variable groups is relatively small (about a hundred or less), and the other one is large. This case arises, for example, when one considers the dual formulation for a minimization problem with a moderate number of constraints. The proposed approach is based on using Vaidya’s cutting plane method to minimize with respect to the outer block of variables. This optimization algorithm is especially effective when the dimension of the problem is not very large. An inexact oracle for Vaidya’s method is calculated via an approximate solution of the inner maximization problem, which is solved by the accelerated variance reduced algorithm Katyusha. Thus, we leverage the structure of the problem to achieve fast convergence. Separate complexity bounds for gradients of different components with respect to different variables are obtained in the study. The proposed approach is imposing very mild assumptions about the objective. In particular, neither strong convexity nor smoothness is required with respect to the low-dimensional variable group. The number of steps of the proposed algorithm as well as the arithmetic complexity of each step explicitly depend on the dimensionality of the outer variable, hence the assumption that it is relatively small.

Cloud interpretation of the entropy model for calculating the trip matrix
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 1, pp. 89-103As the population of cities grows, the need to plan for the development of transport infrastructure becomes more acute. For this purpose, transport modeling packages are created. These packages usually contain a set of convex optimization problems, the iterative solution of which leads to the desired equilibrium distribution of flows along the paths. One of the directions for the development of transport modeling is the construction of more accurate generalized models that take into account different types of passengers, their travel purposes, as well as the specifics of personal and public modes of transport that agents can use. Another important direction of transport models development is to improve the efficiency of the calculations performed. Since, due to the large dimension of modern transport networks, the search for a numerical solution to the problem of equilibrium distribution of flows along the paths is quite expensive. The iterative nature of the entire solution process only makes this worse. One of the approaches leading to a reduction in the number of calculations performed is the construction of consistent models that allow to combine the blocks of a 4-stage model into a single optimization problem. This makes it possible to eliminate the iterative running of blocks, moving from solving a separate optimization problem at each stage to some general problem. Early work has proven that such approaches provide equivalent solutions. However, it is worth considering the validity and interpretability of these methods. The purpose of this article is to substantiate a single problem, that combines both the calculation of the trip matrix and the modal choice, for the generalized case when there are different layers of demand, types of agents and classes of vehicles in the transport network. The article provides possible interpretations for the gauge parameters used in the problem, as well as for the dual factors associated with the balance constraints. The authors of the article also show the possibility of combining the considered problem with a block for determining network load into a single optimization problem.

Performance prediction for chosen types of loops over one-dimensional arrays with embedding-driven intermediate representations analysis
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 1, pp. 211-224The method for mapping of intermediate representations (IR) set of C, C++ programs to vector embedding space is considered to create an empirical estimation framework for static performance prediction using LLVM compiler infrastructure. The usage of embeddings makes programs easier to compare due to avoiding Control Flow Graphs (CFG) and Data Flow Graphs (DFG) direct comparison. This method is based on transformation series of the initial IR such as: instrumentation — injection of artificial instructions in an instrumentation compiler’s pass depending on load offset delta in the current instruction compared to the previous one, mapping of instrumented IR into multidimensional vector with IR2Vec and dimension reduction with t-SNE (t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding) method. The D1 cache miss ratio measured with perf stat tool is considered as performance metric. A heuristic criterion of programs having more or less cache miss ratio is given. This criterion is based on embeddings of programs in 2D-space. The instrumentation compiler’s pass developed in this work is described: how it generates and injects artificial instructions into IR within the used memory model. The software pipeline that implements the performance estimation based on LLVM compiler infrastructure is given. Computational experiments are performed on synthetic tests which are the sets of programs with the same CFGs but with different sequences of offsets used when accessing the one-dimensional array of a given size. The correlation coefficient between performance metric and distance to the worst program’s embedding is measured and proved to be negative regardless of t-SNE initialization. This fact proves the heuristic criterion to be true. The process of such synthetic tests generation is also considered. Moreover, the variety of performance metric in programs set in such a test is proposed as a metric to be improved with exploration of more tests generators.

On the question of choosing the structure of a multivariate regression model on the example of the analysis of burnout factors of artists
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 1, pp. 265-274The article discusses the problem of the influence of the research goals on the structure of the multivariate model of regression analysis (in particular, on the implementation of the procedure for reducing the dimension of the model). It is shown how bringing the specification of the multiple regression model in line with the research objectives affects the choice of modeling methods. Two schemes for constructing a model are compared: the first does not allow taking into account the typology of primary predictors and the nature of their influence on the performance characteristics, the second scheme implies a stage of preliminary division of the initial predictors into groups, in accordance with the objectives of the study. Using the example of solving the problem of analyzing the causes of burnout of creative workers, the importance of the stage of qualitative analysis and systematization of a priori selected factors is shown, which is implemented not by computing means, but by attracting the knowledge and experience of specialists in the studied subject area. The presented example of the implementation of the approach to determining the specification of the regression model combines formalized mathematical and statistical procedures and the preceding stage of the classification of primary factors. The presence of this stage makes it possible to explain the scheme of managing (corrective) actions (softening the leadership style and increasing approval lead to a decrease in the manifestations of anxiety and stress, which, in turn, reduces the severity of the emotional exhaustion of the team members). Preclassification also allows avoiding the combination in one main component of controlled and uncontrolled, regulatory and controlled feature factors, which could worsen the interpretability of the synthesized predictors. On the example of a specific problem, it is shown that the selection of factors-regressors is a process that requires an individual solution. In the case under consideration, the following were consistently used: systematization of features, correlation analysis, principal component analysis, regression analysis. The first three methods made it possible to significantly reduce the dimension of the problem, which did not affect the achievement of the goal for which this task was posed: significant measures of controlling influence on the team were shown. allowing to reduce the degree of emotional burnout of its participants.
