Global limit cycle bifurcations of a polynomial Euler–Lagrange–Liénard system
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 4, pp. 693-705In this paper, using our bifurcation-geometric approach, we study global dynamics and solve the problem of the maximum number and distribution of limit cycles (self-oscillating regimes corresponding to states of dynamical equilibrium) in a planar polynomial mechanical system of the Euler–Lagrange–Liйnard type. Such systems are also used to model electrical, ecological, biomedical and other systems, which greatly facilitates the study of the corresponding real processes and systems with complex internal dynamics. They are used, in particular, in mechanical systems with damping and stiffness. There are a number of examples of technical systems that are described using quadratic damping in second-order dynamical models. In robotics, for example, quadratic damping appears in direct-coupled control and in nonlinear devices, such as variable impedance (resistance) actuators. Variable impedance actuators are of particular interest to collaborative robotics. To study the character and location of singular points in the phase plane of the Euler–Lagrange–Liйnard polynomial system, we use our method the meaning of which is to obtain the simplest (well-known) system by vanishing some parameters (usually, field rotation parameters) of the original system and then to enter sequentially these parameters studying the dynamics of singular points in the phase plane. To study the singular points of the system, we use the classical Poincarй index theorems, as well as our original geometric approach based on the application of the Erugin twoisocline method which is especially effective in the study of infinite singularities. Using the obtained information on the singular points and applying canonical systems with field rotation parameters, as well as using the geometric properties of the spirals filling the internal and external regions of the limit cycles and applying our geometric approach to qualitative analysis, we study limit cycle bifurcations of the system under consideration.

Modeling of hydroelastic oscillations for a channel wall possessing a nonlinear elastic support
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 1, pp. 79-92The paper deals with the mathematical model formulation for studying the nonlinear hydro-elastic response of the narrow channel wall supported by a spring with cubic nonlinearity and interacting with a pulsating viscous liquid filling the channel. In contrast to the known approaches, within the framework of the proposed mathematical model, the inertial and dissipative properties of the viscous incompressible liquid and the restoring force nonlinearity of the supporting spring were simultaneously taken into account. The mathematical model was an equations system for the coupled plane hydroelasticity problem, including the motion equations of a viscous incompressible liquid, with the corresponding boundary conditions, and the channel wall motion equation as a single-degree-of-freedom model with a cubic nonlinear restoring force. Initially, the viscous liquid dynamics was investigated within the framework of the hydrodynamic lubrication theory, i. e. without taking into account the liquid motion inertia. At the next stage, the iteration method was used to take into account the motion inertia of the viscous liquid. The distribution laws of the hydrodynamic parameters for the viscous liquid in the channel were found which made it possible to determine its reaction acting on the channel wall. As a result, it was shown that the original hydroelasticity problem is reduced to a single nonlinear equation that coincides with the Duffing equation. In this equation, the damping coefficient is determined by the liquid physical properties and the channel geometric dimensions, and taking into account the liquid motion inertia lead to the appearance of an added mass. The nonlinear equation study for hydroelastic oscillations was carried out by the harmonic balance method for the main frequency of viscous liquid pulsations. As a result, the primary steady-state hydroelastic response for the channel wall supported by a spring with softening or hardening cubic nonlinearity was found. Numerical modeling of the channel wall hydroelastic response showed the possibility of a jumping change in the amplitudes of channel wall oscillations, and also made it possible to assess the effect of the liquid motion inertia on the frequency range in which these amplitude jumps are observed.

On the kinetics of entropy of a system with discrete microscopic states
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 5, pp. 1207-1236An isolated system, which possesses a discrete set of microscopic states, is considered. The system performs spontaneous random transitions between the microstates. Kinetic equations for the probabilities of the system staying in various microstates are formulated. A general dimensionless expression for entropy of such a system, which depends on the probability distribution, is considered. Two problems are stated: 1) to study the effect of possible unequal probabilities of different microstates, in particular, when the system is in its internal equilibrium, on the system entropy value, and 2) to study the kinetics of microstate probability distribution and entropy evolution of the system in nonequilibrium states. The kinetics for the rates of transitions between the microstates is assumed to be first-order. Two variants of the effects of possible nonequiprobability of the microstates are considered: i) the microstates form two subgroups the probabilities of which are similar within each subgroup but differ between the subgroups, and ii) the microstate probabilities vary arbitrarily around the point at which they are all equal. It is found that, under a fixed total number of microstates, the deviations of entropy from the value corresponding to the equiprobable microstate distribution are extremely small. The latter is a rigorous substantiation of the known hypothesis about the equiprobability of microstates under the thermodynamic equilibrium. On the other hand, based on several characteristic examples, it is shown that the structure of random transitions between the microstates exerts a considerable effect on the rate and mode of the establishment of the system internal equilibrium, on entropy time dependence and expression of the entropy production rate. Under definite schemes of these transitions, there are possibilities of fast and slow components in the transients and of the existence of transients in the form of damped oscillations. The condition of universality and stability of equilibrium microstate distribution is that for any pair of microstates, a sequence of transitions should exist, which provides the passage from one microstate to next, and, consequently, any microstate traps should be absent.

Bistability and damped oscillations in the homogeneous model of viral infection
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 1, pp. 111-124The development of a viral infection in the organism is a complex process which depends on the competition race between virus replication in the host cells and the immune response. To study different regimes of infection progression, we analyze the general mathematical model of immune response to viral infection. The model consists of two ODEs for virus and immune cells non-dimensionalized concentrations. The proliferation rate of immune cells in the model is represented by a bell-shaped function of the virus concentration. This function increases for small virus concentrations describing the antigen-stimulated clonal expansion of immune cells, and decreases for sufficiently high virus concentrations describing down-regulation of immune cells proliferation by the infection. Depending on the virus virulence, strength of the immune response, and the initial viral load, the model predicts several scenarios: (a) infection can be completely eliminated, (b) it can remain at a low level while the concentration of immune cells is high; (c) immune cells can be essentially exhausted, or (d) completely exhausted, which is accompanied (c, d) by high virus concentration. The analysis of the model shows that virus concentration can oscillate as it gradually converges to its equilibrium value. We show that the considered model can be obtained by the reduction of a more general model with an additional equation for the total viral load provided that this equation is fast. In the case of slow kinetics of the total viral load, this more general model should be used.

The effect of nonlinear supratransmission in discrete structures: a review
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 3, pp. 599-617This paper provides an overview of studies on nonlinear supratransmission and related phenomena. This effect consists in the transfer of energy at frequencies not supported by the systems under consideration. The supratransmission does not depend on the integrability of the system, it is resistant to damping and various classes of boundary conditions. In addition, a nonlinear discrete medium, under certain general conditions imposed on the structure, can create instability due to external periodic influence. This instability is the generative process underlying the nonlinear supratransmission. This is possible when the system supports nonlinear modes of various nature, in particular, discrete breathers. Then the energy penetrates into the system as soon as the amplitude of the external harmonic excitation exceeds the maximum amplitude of the static breather of the same frequency.
The effect of nonlinear supratransmission is an important property of many discrete structures. A necessary condition for its existence is the discreteness and nonlinearity of the medium. Its manifestation in systems of various nature speaks of its fundamentality and significance. This review considers the main works that touch upon the issue of nonlinear supratransmission in various systems, mainly model ones.
Many teams of authors are studying this effect. First of all, these are models described by discrete equations, including sin-Gordon and the discrete Schr¨odinger equation. At the same time, the effect is not exclusively model and manifests itself in full-scale experiments in electrical circuits, in nonlinear chains of oscillators, as well as in metastable modular metastructures. There is a gradual complication of models, which leads to a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of supratransmission, and the transition to disordered structures and those with elements of chaos structures allows us to talk about a more subtle manifestation of this effect. Numerical asymptotic approaches make it possible to study nonlinear supratransmission in complex nonintegrable systems. The complication of all kinds of oscillators, both physical and electrical, is relevant for various real devices based on such systems, in particular, in the field of nano-objects and energy transport in them through the considered effect. Such systems include molecular and crystalline clusters and nanodevices. In the conclusion of the paper, the main trends in the research of nonlinear supratransmission are given.

Modeling of a channel wall interaction with an end seal flexibly restrained at the edge
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 2, pp. 387-400The paper proposes a new mathematical model to study the interaction dynamics of the longitudinal wall of a narrow channel with its end seal. The end seal was considered as the edge wall on a spring, i.e. spring-mass system. These walls interaction occurs via a viscous liquid filling the narrow channel; thus required the formulation and solution of the hydroelasticity problem. However, this problem has not been previously studied. The problem consists of the Navier–Stokes equations, the continuity equation, the edge wall dynamics equation, and the corresponding boundary conditions. Two cases of fluid motion in a narrow channel with parallel walls were studied. In the first case, we assumed the liquid motion as the creeping one, and in the second case as the laminar, taking into account the motion inertia. The hydroelasticty problem solution made it possible to determine the distribution laws of velocities and pressure in the liquid layer, as well as the motion law of the edge wall. It is shown that during creeping flow, the liquid physical properties and the channel geometric dimensions completely determine the damping in the considered oscillatory system. Both the end wall velocity and the longitudinal wall velocity affect the damping properties of the liquid layer. If the fluid motion inertia forces were taken into account, their influence on the edge wall vibrations was revealed, which manifested itself in the form of two added masses in the equation of its motion. The added masses and damping coefficients of the liquid layer due to the joint consideration of the liquid layer inertia and its viscosity were determined. The frequency and phase responses of the edge wall were constructed for the regime of steady-state harmonic oscillations. The simulation showed that taking into account the fluid layer inertia and its damping properties leads to a shift in the resonant frequencies to the low-frequency region and an increase in the oscillation amplitudes of the edge wall.

Influence of harvesting on the dynamics of predator-prey community with age-structure for prey
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 4, pp. 823-844The paper studies the influence of selective harvest on dynamic modes of the «predator–prey» community with age structure for prey. We use a slight modification of the Nicholson-Bailey model to describe the interaction between predator and prey. We assume the prey population size is regulated by a decrease in survival rate of juvenile with an increase in the size of age class. The aim is to study the mechanisms of formation and evolution of dynamic modes for the structured «predator–prey» community model due to selective harvesting. We considered the cases when a harvest of some part of predator or prey population or one of the prey’s age classes is realized. The conditions of stable coexistence of interacting species and scenarios of the occurrence of oscillatory modes of abundance are studied. It is shown the harvesting of only young individuals of prey or simultaneous removal of young and adult individuals leads to expansion of parameter space domain with stable dynamics of prey population both with and without a predator. At the same time, the bistability domain narrows, in which changing initial conditions leads to the predator either remains in the community or dies from lack of food. In the case of the harvest for prey adult individuals or predator, the predator preservation in the community is ensured by high values of the prey birth rate, moreover bistability domain expands. With the removal of both juvenile preys and predators, an increase in the survival rates of adult prey leads to stabilization of the community dynamics. The juveniles’ harvest can lead to damping of oscillations and stabilize the prey dynamics in the predator absence. Moreover, it can change the scenario of the coexistence of species — from habitation of preys without predators to a sustainable coexistence of both species. The harvest of some part of predator or prey or the prey’s older age class can lead to both oscillations damping and stable dynamics of the interacting species, and to the destruction of the community, that is, to the death of predator.
