Diffusion instability in a threevariable reaction–diffusion model
Computer Research and Modeling, 2011, v. 3, no. 2, pp. 135-146Views (last year): 1. Citations: 7 (RSCI).Investigation of occurrence of diffusion instability in a set of three reaction–diffusion equations is carried out. In the general case the condition for both Turing and wave instabilities are obtained. Qualitative properties of the system, in which the bifurcation of each of the two types can take place, are clarified. In numerical experiments it is shown that if the corresponding conditions are met in the nonlinear model, spatiotemporal patterns are formed, which are predicted by linear analysis.

On the mechanisms for formation of segmented waves in active media
Computer Research and Modeling, 2013, v. 5, no. 4, pp. 533-542Citations: 3 (RSCI).We suggest three possible mechanisms for formation of segmented waves and spirals. These structures were observed in the Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction dispersed in a water-in-oil aerosol OT microemulsion. The first mechanism is caused by interaction of two coupled subsystems, one of which is excitable, and the other one has Turing instability depending on the parameters. It is shown that, segmented spirals evolve from ordinary smooth spirals as a result of the transverse Turing instability. We demonstrate that depending on the properties of subsystems different segmented spirals emerge. For the second mechanism we suggest "splitting" of the traveling wave in the vicinity of the bifurcation point of codimension-2, where the boundaries of the Turing and wave instabilities intersect. Finally we show that the segmented waves can emerge in some simple two-component reaction-diffusion models having more than one steady state, particularly in a FitzHugh–Nagumo model.

Analysis of a numerical method for studying upward flame spread over solid material
Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 6, pp. 755-774Views (last year): 33.Reduction of the fire hazard of polymeric materials is one of the important scientific and technical problems. Since complexity of experimental procedures associated with flame spread, establishing reacting flows theoretical basics turned out to be crucial field of modern fundamental science. In order to determine parameters of flame spread over solid combustible materials numerical modelling methods have to be improved. Large amount of physical and chemical processes taking place needed to be resolved not just separately one by one but in connection with each other in gas and solid phases.
Upward flame spread over vertical solid combustible material is followed by unsteady eddy structures of gas flow in the vicinity of flame zone caused by thermal instability and natural convection forces accelerating hot combustion products. At every moment different amount of heat energy is transferred from hot gas-phase flame to solid material because of eddy flow structures. Therefore, satisfactory heat flux and eddy flow modelling are important to estimate flame spread rate.
In the current study we evaluated parameters of numerical method for flame spread over solid combustible material problem taking into account coupled nature of complex interaction between gas phase, solid material and eddy flow resulted from natural convection. We studied aspects of different approximation schemes used in differential equations integration process over space and time, of fields relaxation during iterations procedure carried out inside time step, of different time step values.
Mathematical model formulated allows to simulate flame spread over solid combustible material. Fluid dynamics is modeled by Navier – Stokes system of equations, eddy flow is described by combined turbulent model RANS–LES (DDES), turbulent combustion is resolved by modified turbulent combustion model Eddy Break-Up taking into account kinetic effects, radiation transfer is modeled by spherical harmonics method of first order approximation (P1). The equations presented are solved in OpenFOAM software.

Traveling waves in a parabolic problem with a rotation on the circle
Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 5, pp. 705-716Views (last year): 11. Citations: 5 (RSCI).Optical systems with two-dimensional feedback demonstrate wide possibilities for studying the nucleation and development processes of dissipative structures. Feedback allows to influence the dynamics of the optical system by controlling the transformation of spatial variables performed by prisms, lenses, dynamic holograms and other devices. A nonlinear interferometer with a mirror image of a field in two-dimensional feedback is one of the simplest optical systems in which is realized the nonlocal nature of light fields.
A mathematical model of optical systems with two-dimensional feedback is a nonlinear parabolic equation with rotation transformation of a spatial variable and periodicity conditions on a circle. Such problems are investigated: bifurcation of the traveling wave type stationary structures, how the form of the solution changes as the diffusion coefficient decreases, dynamics of the solution’s stability when the bifurcation parameter leaves the critical value. For the first time as a parameter bifurcation was taken of diffusion coefficient.
The method of central manifolds and the Galerkin’s method are used in this paper. The method of central manifolds and the Galerkin’s method are used in this paper. The method of central manifolds allows to prove a theorem on the existence and form of the traveling wave type solution neighborhood of the bifurcation value. The first traveling wave born as a result of the Andronov –Hopf bifurcation in the transition of the bifurcation parameter through the сritical value. According to the central manifold theorem, the first traveling wave is born orbitally stable.
Since the above theorem gives the opportunity to explore solutions are born only in the vicinity of the critical values of the bifurcation parameter, the decision to study the dynamics of traveling waves of change during the withdrawal of the bifurcation parameter in the supercritical region, the formalism of the Galerkin method was used. In accordance with the method of the central manifold is made Galerkin’s approximation of the problem solution. As the bifurcation parameter decreases and its transition through the critical value, the zero solution of the problem loses stability in an oscillatory manner. As a result, a periodic solution of the traveling wave type branches off from the zero solution. This wave is born orbitally stable. With further reduction of the parameter and its passage through the next critical value from the zero solution, the second solution of the traveling wave type is produced as a result of the Andronov –Hopf bifurcation. This wave is born unstable with an instability index of two.
Numerical calculations have shown that the application of the Galerkin’s method leads to correct results. The results obtained are in good agreement with the results obtained by other authors and can be used to establish experiments on the study of phenomena in optical systems with feedback.

Investigation of Turing structures formation under the influence of wave instability
Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 3, pp. 397-412Views (last year): 21.A classical for nonlinear dynamics model, Brusselator, is considered, being augmented by addition of a third variable, which plays the role of a fast-diffusing inhibitor. The model is investigated in one-dimensional case in the parametric domain, where two types of diffusive instabilities of system’s homogeneous stationary state are manifested: wave instability, which leads to spontaneous formation of autowaves, and Turing instability, which leads to spontaneous formation of stationary dissipative structures, or Turing structures. It is shown that, due to the subcritical nature of Turing bifurcation, the interaction of two instabilities in this system results in spontaneous formation of stationary dissipative structures already before the passage of Turing bifurcation. In response to different perturbations of spatially uniform stationary state, different stable regimes are manifested in the vicinity of the double bifurcation point in the parametric region under study: both pure regimes, which consist of either stationary or autowave dissipative structures; and mixed regimes, in which different modes dominate in different areas of the computational space. In the considered region of the parametric space, the system is multistable and exhibits high sensitivity to initial noise conditions, which leads to blurring of the boundaries between qualitatively different regimes in the parametric region. At that, even in the area of dominance of mixed modes with prevalence of Turing structures, the establishment of a pure autowave regime has significant probability. In the case of stable mixed regimes, a sufficiently strong local perturbation in the area of the computational space, where autowave mode is manifested, can initiate local formation of new stationary dissipative structures. Local perturbation of the stationary homogeneous state in the parametric region under investidation leads to a qualitatively similar map of established modes, the zone of dominance of pure autowave regimes being expanded with the increase of local perturbation amplitude. In two-dimensional case, mixed regimes turn out to be only transient — upon the appearance of localized Turing structures under the influence of wave regime, they eventually occupy all available space.

Modeling of anisotropic convection for the binary fluid in porous medium
Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 6, pp. 801-816We study an appearance of gravitational convection in a porous medium saturated by the double-diffusive fluid. The rectangle heated from below is considered with anisotropy of media properties. We analyze Darcy – Boussinesq equations for a binary fluid with Soret effect.
Resulting system for the stream function, the deviation of temperature and concentration is cosymmetric under some additional conditions for the parameters of the problem. It means that the quiescent state (mechanical equilibrium) loses its stability and a continuous family of stationary regimes branches off. We derive explicit formulas for the critical values of the Rayleigh numbers both for temperature and concentration under these conditions of the cosymmetry. It allows to analyze monotonic instability of mechanical equilibrium, the results of corresponding computations are presented.
A finite-difference discretization of a second-order accuracy is developed with preserving of the cosymmetry of the underlying system. The derived numerical scheme is applied to analyze the stability of mechanical equilibrium.
The appearance of stationary and nonstationary convective regimes is studied. The neutral stability curves for the mechanical equilibrium are presented. The map for the plane of the Rayleigh numbers (temperature and concentration) are displayed. The impact of the parameters of thermal diffusion on the Rayleigh concentration number is established, at which the oscillating instability precedes the monotonic instability. In the general situation, when the conditions of cosymmetry are not satisfied, the derived formulas of the critical Rayleigh numbers can be used to estimate the thresholds for the convection onset.

Numerical study of high-speed mixing layers based on a two-fluid turbulence model
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 5, pp. 1125-1142This work is devoted to the numerical study of high-speed mixing layers of compressible flows. The problem under consideration has a wide range of applications in practical tasks and, despite its apparent simplicity, is quite complex in terms of modeling. Because in the mixing layer, as a result of the instability of the tangential discontinuity of velocities, the flow passes from laminar flow to turbulent mode. Therefore, the obtained numerical results of the considered problem strongly depend on the adequacy of the used turbulence models. In the presented work, this problem is studied based on the two-fluid approach to the problem of turbulence. This approach has arisen relatively recently and is developing quite rapidly. The main advantage of the two-fluid approach is that it leads to a closed system of equations, when, as is known, the long-standing Reynolds approach leads to an open system of equations. The paper presents the essence of the two-fluid approach for modeling a turbulent compressible medium and the methodology for numerical implementation of the proposed model. To obtain a stationary solution, the relaxation method and Prandtl boundary layer theory were applied, resulting in a simplified system of equations. In the considered problem, high-speed flows are mixed. Therefore, it is also necessary to model heat transfer, and the pressure cannot be considered constant, as is done for incompressible flows. In the numerical implementation, the convective terms in the hydrodynamic equations were approximated by the upwind scheme with the second order of accuracy in explicit form, and the diffusion terms in the right-hand sides of the equations were approximated by the central difference in implicit form. The sweep method was used to implement the obtained equations. The SIMPLE method was used to correct the velocity through the pressure. The paper investigates a two-liquid turbulence model with different initial flow turbulence intensities. The obtained numerical results showed that good agreement with the known experimental data is observed at the inlet turbulence intensity of $0.1 < I < 1 \%$. Data from known experiments, as well as the results of the $k − kL + J$ and LES models, are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed turbulence model. It is demonstrated that the two-liquid model is as accurate as known modern models and more efficient in terms of computing resources.

Modeling of plankton community state with density-dependent death and spatial activity of zooplankton
Computer Research and Modeling, 2016, v. 8, no. 3, pp. 549-560Views (last year): 6.A vertically distributed three-component model of marine ecosystem is considered. State of the plankton community with nutrients is analyzed under the active movement of zooplankton in a vertical column of water. The necessary conditions of the Turing instability in the vicinity of the spatially homogeneous equilibrium are obtained. Stability of the spatially homogeneous equilibrium, the Turing instability and the oscillatory instability are examined depending on the biological characteristics of zooplankton and spatial movement of plankton. It is shown that at low values of zooplankton grazing rate and intratrophic interaction rate the system is Turing instable when the taxis rate is low. Stabilization occurs either through increased decline of zooplankton either by increasing the phytoplankton diffusion. With the increasing rate of consumption of phytoplankton range of parameters that determine the stability is reduced. A type of instability depends on the phytoplankton diffusion. For large values of diffusion oscillatory instability is observed, with a decrease in the phytoplankton diffusion zone of Turing instability is increases. In general, if zooplankton grazing rate is faster than phytoplankton growth rate the spatially homogeneous equilibrium is Turing instable or oscillatory instable. Stability is observed only at high speeds of zooplankton departure or its active movements. With the increase in zooplankton search activity spatial distribution of populations becomes more uniform, increasing the rate of diffusion leads to non-uniform spatial distribution. However, under diffusion the total number of the population is stabilized when the zooplankton grazing rate above the rate of phytoplankton growth. In general, at low rate of phytoplankton consumption the spatial structures formation is possible at low rates of zooplankton decline and diffusion of all the plankton community. With the increase in phytoplankton predation rate the phytoplankton diffusion and zooplankton spatial movement has essential effect on the spatial instability.

Analysis of taxis-driven instability of a predator–prey system through the plankton community model
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 1, pp. 185-199The paper deals with a prey-predator model, which describes the spatiotemporal dynamics of plankton community and the nutrients. The system is described by reaction-diffusion-advection equations in a onedimensional vertical column of water in the surface layer. Advective term of the predator equation represents the vertical movements of zooplankton with velocity, which is assumed to be proportional to the gradient of phytoplankton density. This study aimed to determine the conditions under which these movements (taxis) lead to the spatially heterogeneous structures generated by the system. Assuming diffusion coefficients of all model components to be equal the instability of the system in the vicinity of stationary homogeneous state with respect to small inhomogeneous perturbations is analyzed.
Necessary conditions for the flow-induced instability were obtained through linear stability analysis. Depending on the local kinetics parameters, increasing the taxis rate leads to Turing or wave instability. This fact is in good agreement with conditions for the emergence of spatial and spatiotemporal patterns in a minimal phytoplankton–zooplankton model after flow-induced instabilities derived by other authors. This mechanism of generating patchiness is more general than the Turing mechanism, which depends on strong conditions on the diffusion coefficients.
While the taxis exceeding a certain critical value, the wave number corresponding to the fastest growing mode remains unchanged. This value determines the type of spatial structure. In support of obtained results, the paper presents the spatiotemporal dynamics of the model components demonstrating Turing-type pattern and standing wave pattern.

Pattern formation of a three-species predator – prey model with prey-taxis and omnivorous predator
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 6, pp. 1617-1634The spatiotemporal dynamics of a three-component model for food web is considered. The model describes the interactions among resource, prey and predator that consumes both species. In a previous work, the author analyzed the model without taking into account spatial heterogeneity. This study continues the model study of the community considering the diffusion of individuals, as well as directed movements of the predator. It is assumed that the predator responds to the spatial change in the resource and prey density by occupying areas where species density is higher or avoiding them. Directed predator movement is described by the advection term, where velocity is proportional to the gradient of resource and prey density. The system is considered on a one-dimensional domain with zero-flux conditions as boundary ones. The spatiotemporal dynamics produced by model is determined by the system stability in the vicinity of stationary homogeneous state with respect to small inhomogeneous perturbations. The paper analyzes the possibility of wave instability leading to the emergence of autowaves and Turing instability, as a result of which stationary patterns are formed. Sufficient conditions for the existence of both types of instability are obtained. The influence of local kinetic parameters on the spatial structure formation was analyzed. It was shown that only Turing instability is possible when taxis on the resource is positive, but with a negative taxis, both types of instability are possible. The numerical solution of the system was found by using method of lines (MOL) with the numerical integration of ODE system by means of splitting techniques. The spatiotemporal dynamics of the system is presented in several variants, realizing one of the instability types. In the case of a positive taxis on the prey, both autowave and stationary structures are formed in smaller regions, with an increase in the region size, Turing structures are not formed. For negative taxis on the prey, stationary patterns is observed in both regions, while periodic structures appear only in larger areas.
