Using feedback functions to solve parametric programming problems
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 5, pp. 1125-1151

We consider a finite-dimensional optimization problem, the formulation of which in addition to the required variables contains parameters. The solution to this problem is a dependence of optimal values of variables on parameters. In general, these dependencies are not functions because they can have ambiguous meanings and in the functional case be nondifferentiable. In addition, their domain of definition may be narrower than the domains of definition of functions in the condition of the original problem. All these properties make it difficult to solve both the original parametric problem and other tasks, the statement of which includes these dependencies. To overcome these difficulties, usually methods such as non-differentiable optimization are used.

This article proposes an alternative approach that makes it possible to obtain solutions to parametric problems in a form devoid of the specified properties. It is shown that such representations can be explored using standard algorithms, based on the Taylor formula. This form is a function smoothly approximating the solution of the original problem for any parameter values, specified in its statement. In this case, the value of the approximation error is controlled by a special parameter. Construction of proposed approximations is performed using special functions that establish feedback (within optimality conditions for the original problem) between variables and Lagrange multipliers. This method is described for linear problems with subsequent generalization to the nonlinear case.

From a computational point of view the construction of the approximation consists in finding the saddle point of the modified Lagrange function of the original problem. Moreover, this modification is performed in a special way using feedback functions. It is shown that the necessary conditions for the existence of such a saddle point are similar to the conditions of the Karush – Kuhn – Tucker theorem, but do not contain constraints such as inequalities and conditions of complementary slackness. Necessary conditions for the existence of a saddle point determine this approximation implicitly. Therefore, to calculate its differential characteristics, the implicit function theorem is used. The same theorem is used to reduce the approximation error to an acceptable level.

Features of the practical implementation feedback function method, including estimates of the rate of convergence to the exact solution are demonstrated for several specific classes of parametric optimization problems. Specifically, tasks searching for the global extremum of functions of many variables and the problem of multiple extremum (maximin-minimax) are considered. Optimization problems that arise when using multicriteria mathematical models are also considered. For each of these classes, there are demo examples.

Noise removal from images using the proposed three-term conjugate gradient algorithm
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 4, pp. 841-853

Conjugate gradient algorithms represent an important class of unconstrained optimization algorithms with strong local and global convergence properties and simple memory requirements. These algorithms have advantages that place them between the steep regression method and Newton’s algorithm because they require calculating the first derivatives only and do not require calculating and storing the second derivatives that Newton’s algorithm needs. They are also faster than the steep descent algorithm, meaning that they have overcome the slow convergence of this algorithm, and it does not need to calculate the Hessian matrix or any of its approximations, so it is widely used in optimization applications. This study proposes a novel method for image restoration by fusing the convex combination method with the hybrid (CG) method to create a hybrid three-term (CG) algorithm. Combining the features of both the Fletcher and Revees (FR) conjugate parameter and the hybrid Fletcher and Revees (FR), we get the search direction conjugate parameter. The search direction is the result of concatenating the gradient direction, the previous search direction, and the gradient from the previous iteration. We have shown that the new algorithm possesses the properties of global convergence and descent when using an inexact search line, relying on the standard Wolfe conditions, and using some assumptions. To guarantee the effectiveness of the suggested algorithm and processing image restoration problems. The numerical results of the new algorithm show high efficiency and accuracy in image restoration and speed of convergence when used in image restoration problems compared to Fletcher and Revees (FR) and three-term Fletcher and Revees (TTFR).

  4. Efficiency of production directly depends on quality of the management of technology which, in turn, relies on the accuracy and efficiency of the processing of control and measuring information. Development of the mathematical methods of research of the system communications and regularities of functioning and creation of the mathematical models taking into account structural features of object of researches, and also writing of the software products for realization of these methods are an actual task. Practice has shown that the list of parameters that take place in the study of complex object of modern production, ranging from a few dozen to several hundred names, and the degree of influence of each factor in the initial time is not clear. Before working for the direct determination of the model in these circumstances, it is impossible — the amount of the required information may be too great, and most of the work on the collection of this information will be done in vain due to the fact that the degree of influence on the optimization of most factors of the original list would be negligible. Therefore, a necessary step in determining a model of a complex object is to work to reduce the dimension of the factor space. Most industrial plants are hierarchical group processes and mass volume production, characterized by hundreds of factors. (For an example of realization of the mathematical methods and the approbation of the constructed models data of the Moldavian steel works were taken in a basis.) To investigate the systemic linkages and patterns of functioning of such complex objects are usually chosen several informative parameters, and carried out their sampling. In this article the sequence of coercion of the initial indices of the technological process of the smelting of steel to the look suitable for creation of a mathematical model for the purpose of prediction is described. The implementations of new types became also creation of a basis for development of the system of automated management of quality of the production. In the course of weak correlation the following stages are selected: collection and the analysis of the basic data, creation of the table the correlated of the parameters, abbreviation of factor space by means of the correlative pleiads and a method of weight factors. The received results allow to optimize process of creation of the model of multiple-factor process.

Simulation of convective-radiative heat transfer in a differentially heated rotating cavity
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 2, pp. 195-207

Mathematical simulation of unsteady natural convection and thermal surface radiation within a rotating square enclosure was performed. The considered domain of interest had two isothermal opposite walls subjected to constant low and high temperatures, while other walls are adiabatic. The walls were diffuse and gray. The considered cavity rotated with constant angular velocity relative to the axis that was perpendicular to the cavity and crossed the cavity in the center. Mathematical model, formulated in dimensionless transformed variables “stream function – vorticity” using the Boussinesq approximation and diathermic approach for the medium, was performed numerically using the finite difference method. The vorticity dispersion equation and energy equation were solved using locally one-dimensional Samarskii scheme. The diffusive terms were approximated by central differences, while the convective terms were approximated using monotonic Samarskii scheme. The difference equations were solved by the Thomas algorithm. The approximated Poisson equation for the stream function was solved by successive over-relaxation method. Optimal value of the relaxation parameter was found on the basis of computational experiments. Radiative heat transfer was analyzed using the net-radiation method in Poljak approach. The developed computational code was tested using the grid independence analysis and experimental and numerical results for the model problem.

Numerical analysis of unsteady natural convection and thermal surface radiation within the rotating enclosure was performed for the following parameters: Ra = 103–106, Ta = 0–105, Pr = 0.7, ε = 0–0.9. All distributions were obtained for the twentieth complete revolution when one can find the periodic behavior of flow and heat transfer. As a result we revealed that at low angular velocity the convective flow can intensify but the following growth of angular velocity leads to suppression of the convective flow. The radiative Nusselt number changes weakly with the Taylor number.

Calibration of model parameters for calculating correspondence matrix for Moscow
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 5, pp. 961-978

In this paper, we consider the problem of restoring the correspondence matrix based on the observations of real correspondences in Moscow. Following the conventional approach [Gasnikov et al., 2013], the transport network is considered as a directed graph whose edges correspond to road sections and the graph vertices correspond to areas that the traffic participants leave or enter. The number of city residents is considered constant. The problem of restoring the correspondence matrix is to calculate all the correspondence from the $i$ area to the $j$ area.

To restore the matrix, we propose to use one of the most popular methods of calculating the correspondence matrix in urban studies — the entropy model. In our work, which is based on the work [Wilson, 1978], we describe the evolutionary justification of the entropy model and the main idea of the transition to solving the problem of entropy-linear programming (ELP) in calculating the correspondence matrix. To solve the ELP problem, it is proposed to pass to the dual problem. In this paper, we describe several numerical optimization methods for solving this problem: the Sinkhorn method and the Accelerated Sinkhorn method. We provide numerical experiments for the following variants of cost functions: a linear cost function and a superposition of the power and logarithmic cost functions. In these functions, the cost is a combination of average time and distance between areas, which depends on the parameters. The correspondence matrix is calculated for multiple sets of parameters and then we calculate the quality of the restored matrix relative to the known correspondence matrix.

We assume that the noise in the restored correspondence matrix is Gaussian, as a result, we use the standard deviation as a quality metric. The article provides an overview of gradient-free optimization methods for solving non-convex problems. Since the number of parameters of the cost function is small, we use the grid search method to find the optimal parameters of the cost function. Thus, the correspondence matrix calculated for each set of parameters and then the quality of the restored matrix is evaluated relative to the known correspondence matrix. Further, according to the minimum residual value for each cost function, we determine for which cost function and at what parameter values the restored matrix best describes real correspondence.

Discrete simulation of the road restoration process
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 6, pp. 1255-1268

This work contains a description of the results of modeling the process of maintaining the readiness of a section of the road network under strikes of with specified parameters. A one-dimensional section of road up to 40 km long with a total number of strikes up to 100 during the work of the brigade is considered. A simulation model has been developed for carrying out work to maintain it in working condition by several groups (engineering teams) that are part of the engineering and road division. A multicopter-type unmanned aerial vehicle is used to search for the points of appearance of obstacles. Life cycle schemes of the main participants of the tactical scene have been developed and an event-driven model of the tactical scene has been built. The format of the event log generated as a result of simulation modeling of the process of maintaining a road section is proposed. To visualize the process of maintaining the readiness of a road section, it is proposed to use visualization in the cyclogram format.

An XSL style has been developed for building a cyclogram based on an event log. As an algorithm for making a decision on the assignment of barriers to brigades, the simplest algorithm has been adopted, prescribing choosing the nearest barrier. A criterion describing the effectiveness of maintenance work on the site based on the assessment of the average speed of vehicles on the road section is proposed. Graphs of the dependence of the criterion value and the root-meansquare error depending on the length of the maintained section are plotted and an estimate is obtained for the maximum length of the road section maintained in a state of readiness with specified values for the selected quality indicator with specified characteristics of striking and performance of repair crews. The expediency of carrying out work to maintain readiness by several brigades that are part of the engineering and road division operating autonomously is shown.

The influence of the speed of the unmanned aerial vehicle on the ability to maintain the readiness of the road section is analyzed. The speed range for from 10 to 70 km/h is considered, which corresponds to the technical capabilities of multicoptertype reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles. The simulation results can be used as part of a complex simulation model of an army offensive or defensive operation and for solving the problem of optimizing the assignment of tasks to maintain the readiness of road sections to engineering and road brigades. The proposed approach may be of interest for the development of military-oriented strategy games.

Modeling the physical processes of a powerful nuclear explosion on an asteroid
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 5, pp. 861-877

As part of the paper, a physical and theoretical analysis of the impact processes of various factors of a highaltitude and high-energy nuclear explosion on the asteroid in extra-atmospheric conditions of open space is done. It is shown that, in accordance with the energy and permeability of the plasma of explosion products, X-ray and gamma-neutron radiation, a layered structure with a different energy density depending on angular coordinates is formed on the surface of the asteroid. The temporal patterns of the energy transformation for each layer is clarified and the roles of various photo- and collision processes are determined. The effect of a high-speed plasma flow is erosive in nature, and the plasma pulse is transmitted to the asteroid. The paper presents that in a thin layer of x-ray absorption, the asteroid substance is heated to high temperatures and as a result of its expansion, a recoil impulse is formed, which is not decisive due to the small mass of the expanding high-temperature plasma. Calculations shows that the main impulse received by an asteroid is associated with the entrainment of a heated layer of a substance formed by a neutron flux (7.5 E 1014 g E cm/s). It is shown that an asteroid with a radius of ~100 m acquires a velocity of . 100 cm/s. The calculations were performed taking into account the explosion energy spent on the destruction of the amorphous structure of the asteroid material (~1 eV/atom = 3.8 E 1010 erg/g) and ionization in the region of the high-temperature layer. Based on a similar analysis, an approximation is obtained for estimating the average size of fragments in the event of the possible destruction of the asteroid by shock waves generated inside it under the influence of pressure impulses. A physical experiment was conducted in laboratory conditions, simulating the fragmentation of a stone asteroid and confirming the validity of the obtained dependence on the selected values of certain parameters. As a result of numerical studies of the effects of the explosion, carried out at different distances from the surface of the asteroid, it is shown that taking into account the real geometry of the spallation layer gives the optimal height for the formation of the maximum asteroid momentum by a factor of 1.5 greater than similar estimates according to the simplified model. A two-stage concept of the impact of nuclear explosions on an asteroid using radar guidance tools is proposed. The paper analyzes the possible impact of the emerging ionization interference on the radar tracking of the movement of large fragments of the asteroid in the space-time evolution of all elements of the studied dynamic system.

Numerical modeling of the natural convection of a non-Newtonian fluid in a closed cavity
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 1, pp. 59-72

In this paper, a time-dependent natural convective heat transfer in a closed square cavity filled with non- Newtonian fluid was considered in the presence of an isothermal energy source located on the lower wall of the region under consideration. The vertical boundaries were kept at constant low temperature, while the horizontal walls were completely insulated. The behavior of a non-Newtonian fluid was described by the Ostwald de Ville power law. The process under study was described by transient partial differential equations using dimensionless non-primitive variables “stream function – vorticity – temperature”. This method allows excluding the pressure field from the number of unknown parameters, while the non-dimensionalization allows generalizing the obtained results to a variety of physical formulations. The considered mathematical model with the corresponding boundary conditions was solved on the basis of the finite difference method. The algebraic equation for the stream function was solved by the method of successive lower relaxation. Discrete analogs of the vorticity equation and energy equation were solved by the Thomas algorithm. The developed numerical algorithm was tested in detail on a class of model problems and good agreement with other authors was achieved. Also during the study, the mesh sensitivity analysis was performed that allows choosing the optimal mesh.

As a result of numerical simulation of unsteady natural convection of a non-Newtonian power-law fluid in a closed square cavity with a local isothermal energy source, the influence of governing parameters was analyzed including the impact of the Rayleigh number in the range 104–106, power-law index $n = 0.6–1.4$, and also the position of the heating element on the flow structure and heat transfer performance inside the cavity. The analysis was carried out on the basis of the obtained distributions of streamlines and isotherms in the cavity, as well as on the basis of the dependences of the average Nusselt number. As a result, it was established that pseudoplastic fluids $(n < 1)$ intensify heat removal from the heater surface. The increase in the Rayleigh number and the central location of the heating element also correspond to the effective cooling of the heat source.

Optimization of task package execution planning in multi-stage systems under restrictions and the formation of sets
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 5, pp. 917-946

Modern methods of complex planning the execution of task packages in multistage systems are characterized by the presence of restrictions on the dimension of the problem being solved, the impossibility of guaranteed obtaining effective solutions for various values of its input parameters, as well as the impossibility of registration the conditions for the formation of sets from the result and the restriction on the interval duration of time of the system operating. The decomposition of the generalized function of the system into a set of hierarchically interconnected subfunctions is implemented to solve the problem of scheduling the execution of task packages with generating sets of results and the restriction on the interval duration of time for the functioning of the system. The use of decomposition made it possible to employ the hierarchical approach for planning the execution of task packages in multistage systems, which provides the determination of decisions by the composition of task groups at the first level of the hierarchy decisions by the composition of task packages groups executed during time intervals of limited duration at the second level and schedules for executing packages at the third level the hierarchy. In order to evaluate decisions on the composition of packages, the results of their execution, obtained during the specified time intervals, are distributed among the packages. The apparatus of the theory of hierarchical games is used to determine complex solutions. A model of a hierarchical game for making decisions by the compositions of packages, groups of packages and schedules of executing packages is built, which is a system of hierarchically interconnected criteria for optimizing decisions. The model registers the condition for the formation of sets from the results of the execution of task packages and restriction on duration of time intervals of its operating. The problem of determining the compositions of task packages and groups of task packages is NP-hard; therefore, its solution requires the use of approximate optimization methods. In order to optimize groups of task packages, the construction of a method for formulating initial solutions by their compositions has been implemented, which are further optimized. Moreover, a algorithm for distributing the results of executing task packages obtained during time intervals of limited duration by sets is formulated. The method of local solutions optimization by composition of packages groups, in accordance with which packages are excluded from groups, the results of which are not included in sets, and packages, that aren’t included in any group, is proposed. The software implementation of the considered method of complex optimization of the compositions of task packages, groups of task packages, and schedules for executing task packages from groups (including the implementation of the method for optimizing the compositions of groups of task packages) has been performed. With its use, studies of the features of the considered planning task are carried out. Conclusion are formulated concerning the dependence of the efficiency of scheduling the execution of task packages in multistage system under the introduced conditions from the input parameters of the problem. The use of the method of local optimization of the compositions of groups of task packages allows to increase the number of formed sets from the results of task execution in packages from groups by 60% in comparison with fixed groups (which do not imply optimization).
