Investigation of Turing structures formation under the influence of wave instability
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 3, pp. 397-412

A classical for nonlinear dynamics model, Brusselator, is considered, being augmented by addition of a third variable, which plays the role of a fast-diffusing inhibitor. The model is investigated in one-dimensional case in the parametric domain, where two types of diffusive instabilities of system’s homogeneous stationary state are manifested: wave instability, which leads to spontaneous formation of autowaves, and Turing instability, which leads to spontaneous formation of stationary dissipative structures, or Turing structures. It is shown that, due to the subcritical nature of Turing bifurcation, the interaction of two instabilities in this system results in spontaneous formation of stationary dissipative structures already before the passage of Turing bifurcation. In response to different perturbations of spatially uniform stationary state, different stable regimes are manifested in the vicinity of the double bifurcation point in the parametric region under study: both pure regimes, which consist of either stationary or autowave dissipative structures; and mixed regimes, in which different modes dominate in different areas of the computational space. In the considered region of the parametric space, the system is multistable and exhibits high sensitivity to initial noise conditions, which leads to blurring of the boundaries between qualitatively different regimes in the parametric region. At that, even in the area of dominance of mixed modes with prevalence of Turing structures, the establishment of a pure autowave regime has significant probability. In the case of stable mixed regimes, a sufficiently strong local perturbation in the area of the computational space, where autowave mode is manifested, can initiate local formation of new stationary dissipative structures. Local perturbation of the stationary homogeneous state in the parametric region under investidation leads to a qualitatively similar map of established modes, the zone of dominance of pure autowave regimes being expanded with the increase of local perturbation amplitude. In two-dimensional case, mixed regimes turn out to be only transient — upon the appearance of localized Turing structures under the influence of wave regime, they eventually occupy all available space.

On the stability of the gravitational system of many bodies
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 3, pp. 487-511

In this paper, a gravitational system is understood as a set of point bodies that interact according to Newton's law of attraction and have a negative value of the total energy. The question of the stability (nonstability) of a gravitational system of general position is discussed by direct computational experiment. A gravitational system of general position is a system in which the masses, initial positions, and velocities of bodies are chosen randomly from given ranges. A new method for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations at large time intervals has been developed for the computational experiment. The proposed method allowed, on the one hand, to ensure the fulfillment of all conservation laws by a suitable correction of solutions, on the other hand, to use standard methods for the numerical solution of systems of differential equations of low approximation order. Within the framework of this method, the trajectory of a gravitational system in phase space is assembled from parts, the duration of each of which can be macroscopic. The constructed trajectory, generally speaking, is discontinuous, and the points of joining of individual pieces of the trajectory act as branch points. In connection with the latter circumstance, the proposed method, in part, can be attributed to the class of Monte Carlo methods. The general conclusion of a series of computational experiments has shown that gravitational systems of general position with a number of bodies of 3 or more, generally speaking, are unstable. In the framework of the proposed method, special cases of zero-equal angular momentum of a gravitational system with a number of bodies of 3 or more, as well as the problem of motion of two bodies, are specially considered. The case of numerical modeling of the dynamics of the solar system in time is considered separately. From the standpoint of computational experiments based on analytical methods, as well as direct numerical methods of high-order approximation (10 and higher), the stability of the solar system was previously demonstrated at an interval of five billion years or more. Due to the limitations on the available computational resources, the stability of the dynamics of the planets of the solar system within the framework of the proposed method was confirmed for a period of ten million years. With the help of a computational experiment, one of the possible scenarios for the disintegration of the solar systems is also considered.

About one version of the nodal method of characteristics
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 1, pp. 29-44

A variant of the inverse method of characteristics (IMH) is presented, in whose algorithm an additional fractional time step is introduced, which makes it possible to increase the accuracy of calculations due to a more accurate approximation of the characteristics. The calculation formulas of the modified method for the equations of the one-velocity model of a gas-liquid mixture are given, with the help of which one-dimensional and also flat test problems with self-similar solutions are calculated. When solving multidimensional problems, the original system of equations is split into a number of one-dimensional subsystems, for the calculation of which the inverse method of characteristics with a fractional time step is used. Using the proposed method, the following were calculated: the one-dimensional problem of the decay of an arbitrary discontinuity in a dispersed medium; a twodimensional problem of the interaction of a homogeneous gas-liquid flow with an obstacle with an attached shock wave, as well as a flow with a centered rarefaction wave. The results of numerical calculations of these problems are compared with self-similar solutions and their satisfactory agreement is noted. On the example of the Riemann problem with a shock wave, a comparison is made with a number of conservative, non-conservative, first and higher orders of accuracy schemes, from which, in particular, it follows that the presented calculation method, i. e. MIMC, quite competitive. Despite the fact that the application of MIMC requires many times more time than the original inverse method of characteristics (IMC), calculations can be carried out with an increased time step and, in some cases, more accurate results can be obtained. It is noted that the method with a fractional time step has advantages over the IMC in cases where the characteristics of the system are significantly curvilinear. For this reason, the use of MIMC, for example, for the Euler equations is inappropriate, since for the latter the characteristics within the time step differ little from straight lines.

Analysis of noise-induced destruction of coexistence regimes in «prey–predator» population model
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2016, v. 8, no. 4, pp. 647-660

The paper is devoted to the analysis of the proximity of the population system to dangerous boundaries. An intersection of these boundaries results in the collapse of the stable coexistence of interacting populations. As a reason of such destruction one can consider random perturbations inevitably presented in any living system. This study is carried out on the example of the well-known model of interaction between predator and prey populations, taking into account both a stabilizing factor of the competition of predators for another than prey resources, and also a destabilizing saturation factor for predators. To describe the saturation of predators, we use the second type Holling trophic function. The dynamics of the system is studied as a function of the predator saturation, and the coefficient of predator competition for resources other than prey. The paper presents a parametric description of the possible dynamic regimes of the deterministic model. Here, local and global bifurcations are studied, and areas of sustainable coexistence of populations in equilibrium and the oscillation modes are described. An interesting feature of this mathematical model, firstly considered by Bazykin, is a global bifurcation of the birth of limit cycle from the separatrix loop. We study the effects of noise on the equilibrium and oscillatory regimes of coexistence of predator and prey populations. It is shown that an increase of the intensity of random disturbances can lead to significant deformations of these regimes right up to their destruction. The aim of this work is to develop a constructive probabilistic criterion for the proximity of the population stochastic system to the dangerous boundaries. The proposed approach is based on the mathematical technique of stochastic sensitivity functions, and the method of confidence domains. In the case of a stable equilibrium, this confidence domain is an ellipse. For the stable cycle, this domain is a confidence band. The size of the confidence domain is proportional to the intensity of the noise and stochastic sensitivity of the initial deterministic attractor. A geometric criterion of the exit of the population system from sustainable coexistence mode is the intersection of the confidence domain and the corresponding separatrix of the unforced deterministic model. An effectiveness of this analytical approach is confirmed by the good agreement of theoretical estimates and results of direct numerical simulations.

Mathematical simulation of vortex motion in the astrophysical objects on the basis of the gas-dynamic model
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 5, pp. 631-643

The application of a conservative numerical method of fluxes is examined for studying the vortex structures in the massive, fast-turned compact astrophysical objects, which are in self-gravity conditions. The simulation is accomplished for the objects with different mass and rotational speed. The pictures of the vortex structure of objects are visualized. In the calculations the gas-dynamic model is used, in which gas is accepted perfected and nonviscous. Numerical procedure is based on the finite-difference approximation of the conservation laws of the additive characteristics of medium for the finite volume. The “upwind” approximations of the densities of distribution of mass, components of momentum and total energy are applied. For the simulation of the objects, which possess fast-spin motion, the control of conservation for the component of moment of momentun is carried out during calculation. Evolutionary calculation is carried out on the basis of the parallel algorithms, realized on the computer complex of cluster architecture. Algorithms are based on the standardized system of message transfer Message Passing Interface (MPI). The blocking procedures of exchange and non-blocking procedures of exchange with control of the completion of operation are used. The parallelization on the space in two or three directions is carried out depending on the size of integration area and parameters of computational grid. For each subarea the parallelization based on the physical factors is carried out also: the calculations of gas dynamics part and gravitational forces are realized on the different processors, that allows to raise the efficiency of algorithms. The real possibility of the direct calculation of gravitational forces by means of the summation of interaction between all finite volumes in the integration area is shown. For the finite volume methods this approach seems to more consecutive than the solution of Poisson’s equation for the gravitational potential. Numerical calculations were carried out on the computer complex of cluster architecture with the peak productivity 523 TFlops. In the calculations up to thousand processors was used.

Import model of flexible woven composites in ANSYS Mechanical APDL
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 6, pp. 789-799

A variant of import into ANSYS Mechanical APDL system of the model of behavior of flexible woven composite materials with reinforcing weaving cloth of linen at static stretching along the reinforcement yarns is offered. The import was carried out using an integration module based on the use of an analytical model of deformation of the material under study. The model is presented in the articles published earlier and takes into account the changes in the geometric structure occurring in the reinforcing layer of the material during the deformation process, the formation of irreversible deformations and the interaction of cross-lying reinforcing fabric threads. In the introduction input characteristics of the plain weave of the reinforcing fabric and the analytical model imported into ANSYS are briefly described. The input parameters of the module are the mechanical characteristics of the materials that make up the composite (binder and material of reinforcement yarns), the geometric characteristics of the interlacing of the reinforcing fabric. The algorithm for importing the model is based on the calculation and transfer in ANSYS of the calculated points of the material stress-strain diagram for uniaxial stretching along the reinforcement direction and using the Multilinear Kinematich Hardening model material embedded in the ANSYS. The analytical model imported with the help of the presented module allows to model a composite material with reinforcing fabric without a detailed description of the geometry of the interlacing of threads during modeling of the material as a whole. The imported model was verified. For verification full-scale experimental studies and numerical simulation of the stretching of samples from flexible woven composites were carried out. The analysis of the obtained results showed good qualitative and quantitative agreement of calculations.

A Monte-Carlo study of the inner tracking system main characteristics for multi purpose particle detector MPD
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 1, pp. 87-94

At present, the accelerator complex NICA is being built at JINR (Dubna). It is intended for performing experiments to study interactions of relativistic nuclei and polarized particles (protons and deuterons). One of the experimental facilitues MPD (MultiPurpose Detector) was designed to investigate nucleus-nucleus, protonnucleus and proton-proton interactions. The existing plans of future MPD upgrade consider a possibility to install an inner tracker made of the new generation silicon pixel sensors. It is expected that such a detector will considerably enhance the research capability of the experiment both for nucleus-nucleus interactions (due to a high spatial resolution near the collision region) and proton-proton ones (due to a fast detector response).

This paper presents main characteristics of such a tracker, obtained using a Monte-Carlo simulation of the detector for proton-proton collisions. In particular, the detector ability to reconstruct decay vertices of short-lived particles and perform a selection of rare events of such decays from much more frequent “common” interactions are evaluated. Also, the problem of a separation of multiple collisions during the high luminosity accelerator running and the task of detector triggering on rare events are addressed. The results obtained can be used to justify the necessity to build such a detector and to develop a high-level trigger system, possibly based on machine learning techniques.

Numerical calculation of planar geophysical flows of an inviscid incompressible fluid by a meshfree-spectral method
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 3, pp. 413-426

In this article, a meshfree-spectral method for numerical investigation of dynamics of planar geophysical flows is proposed. We investigate inviscid incompressible fluid flows with the presence of planetary rotation. Mathematically this problem is described by the non-steady system of two partial differential equations in terms of stream and vorticity functions with different boundary conditions (closed flow region and periodic conditions). The proposed method is based on several assumptions. First of all, the vorticity field is given by its values on the set of particles. The function of vorticity distribution is approximated by piecewise cubic polynomials. Coefficients of polynomials are found by least squares method. The stream function is calculated by using the spectral global Bubnov –Galerkin method at each time step.

The dynamics of fluid particles is calculated by pseudo-symplectic Runge –Kutta method. A detailed version of the method for periodic boundary conditions is described in this article for the first time. The adequacy of numerical scheme was examined on test examples. The dynamics of the configuration of four identical circular vortex patches with constant vorticity located at the vertices of a square with a center at the pole is investigated by numerical experiments. The effect of planetary rotation and the radius of patches on the dynamics and formation of vortex structures is studied. It is shown that, depending on the direction of rotation, the Coriolis force can enhance or slow down the processes of interaction and mixing of the distributed vortices. At large radii the vortex structure does not stabilize.

Numerical study of the interaction of a shock wave with moving rotating bodies with a complex shape
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 3, pp. 513-540

The work is devoted to the development of a computational algorithm of the Cartesian grid method for studying the interaction of a shock wave with moving bodies with a piecewise linear boundary. The interest in such problems is connected with direct numerical simulation of two-phase media flows. The effect of the particle shape can be important in the problem of dust layer dispersion behind a passing shock wave. Experimental data on the coefficient of aerodynamic drag of non-spherical particles are practically absent.

Mathematical model is based on the two-dimensional Euler equations, which are solved in a region with varying boundaries. The defining system of equations is integrated using an explicit scheme and the Cartesian grid method. The computational algorithm at the time integration step includes: determining the step value, calculating the dynamics of the body movement (determining the force and moment acting on the body; determining the linear and angular velocities of the body; calculating the new coordinates of the body), calculating the gas parameters. At each time step, all cells are divided into two classes – external (inside the body or intersected by its boundaries) and internal (completely filled with gas). The solution of the Euler equations is constructed only in the internal ones. The main difficulty is the calculation of the numerical flux through the edges common to the internal and external cells intersected by the moving boundaries of the bodies. To calculate this flux, we use a two-wave approximation for solving the Riemann problem and the Steger-Warming scheme. A detailed description of the numerical algorithm is presented.

The efficiency of the algorithm is demonstrated on the problem of lifting a cylinder with a base in the form of a circle, ellipse and rectangle behind a passing shock wave. A circular cylinder test was considered in many papers devoted to the immersed boundary methods development. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the trajectory of the cylinder center mass is carried out on the basis of comparison with the results of simulations presented in eight other works. For a cylinder with a base in the form of an ellipse and a rectangle, a satisfactory agreement was obtained on the dynamics of its movement and rotation in comparison with the available few literary sources. Grid convergence of the results is investigated for the rectangle. It is shown that the relative error of mass conservation law fulfillment decreases with a linear rate.

A simulation model of connected automated vehicles platoon dynamics in a heterogeneous traffic flow
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 5, pp. 1041-1058

The gradual incorporation of automated vehicles into the global transport networks leads to the need to develop tools to assess the impact of this process on various aspects of traffic. This implies a more organized movement of automated vehicles which can form uniformly moving platoons. The influence of the formation and movement of these platoons on the dynamics of traffic flow is of great interest. The currently most developed traffic flow models are based on the cellular automaton approach. They are mainly developed in the direction of increasing accuracy. This inevitably leads to the complication of models, which in their modern form have significantly moved away from the original philosophy of cellular automata, which implies simplicity and schematicity of models at the level of evolution rules, leading, however, to a complex organized behavior of the system. In the present paper, a simulation model of connected automated vehicles platoon dynamics in a heterogeneous transport system is proposed, consisting of two types of agents (vehicles): human-driven and automated. The description of the temporal evolution of the system is based on modified rules 184 and 240 for elementary cellular automata. Human-driven vehicles move according to rule 184 with the addition of accidental braking, the probability of which depends on the distance to the vehicle in front. For automated vehicles, a combination of rules is used depending on the type of nearest neighbors, regardless of the distance to them, which brings non-local interaction to the model. At the same time, it is considered that a group of sequentially moving connected automated vehicles can form an organized platoon. The influence of the ratio of types of vehicles in the system on the characteristics of the traffic flow during free movement on a circular one-lane and two-lane roads, as well as in the presence of a traffic light, is studied. The simulation results show that the effect of platoon formation is significant for a freeway traffic flow; the presence of a traffic light reduces the positive effect by about half. The movement of platoons of connected automated vehicles on two-lane roads with the possibility of lane changing was also studied. It is shown that considering the types of neighboring vehicles (automated or human-driven) when changing lanes for automated vehicles has a positive effect on the characteristics of the traffic flow.
