    Computer Research and Modeling, 2015, v. 7, no. 5, pp. 1069-1079

The aim of the present study is to show how engineering approaches and ideas work in clinical restorative dentistry, in particular, how they affect the restoration design and durability of restored endodontically treated teeth. For these purposes a 3D-computational model of a first incisor including the elements of hard tooth tissues, periodontal ligament, surrounding bone structures and restoration itself has been constructed and numerically simulated for a variety of restoration designs under normal chewing loadings. It has been researched the effect of different adhesive technologies in root canal on the functional characteristics of a restored tooth. The 3D model designed could be applied for preclinical diagnostics to determine the areas of possible fractures of a restored tooth and prognosticate its longevity.

  2. In this study the calculation of 1/2-wave transducer of longitudinal ultrasonic oscillations and one wave transducer of longitudinal-torsion ultrasonic oscillations were carried out by finite element method with use of Abaqus. Dimensions of the concentrator of longitudinal-torsional oscillations and frequency-amplitude characteristics of the transducers of longitudinal and longitudinal-torsional oscillations were defined by calculation. Application of ultrasonic longitudinal-torsional oscillations at tool during surface-strengthening treatment of details made of titanium will allow to reduce adhesion portion of friction in the contact zone. A comparison of results of finite-element calculation of frequency-amplitude characteristics with experimental ones were made and calculation error does not exceed 2.5 %.

Experimental identification of the organization of mental calculations of the person on the basis of algebras of different associativity
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 2, pp. 311-327

The work continues research on the ability of a person to improve the productivity of information processing, using parallel work or improving the performance of analyzers. A person receives a series of tasks, the solution of which requires the processing of a certain amount of information. The time and the validity of the decision are recorded. The dependence of the average solution time on the amount of information in the problem is determined by correctly solved problems. In accordance with the proposed method, the problems contain calculations of expressions in two algebras, one of which is associative and the other is nonassociative. To facilitate the work of the subjects in the experiment were used figurative graphic images of elements of algebra. Non-associative calculations were implemented in the form of the game “rock-paper-scissors”. It was necessary to determine the winning symbol in the long line of these figures, considering that they appear sequentially from left to right and play with the previous winner symbol. Associative calculations were based on the recognition of drawings from a finite set of simple images. It was necessary to determine which figure from this set in the line is not enough, or to state that all the pictures are present. In each problem there was no more than one picture. Computation in associative algebra allows the parallel counting, and in the absence of associativity only sequential computations are possible. Therefore, the analysis of the time for solving a series of problems reveals a consistent uniform, sequential accelerated and parallel computing strategy. In the experiments it was found that all subjects used a uniform sequential strategy to solve non-associative problems. For the associative task, all subjects used parallel computing, and some have used parallel computing acceleration of the growth of complexity of the task. A small part of the subjects with a high complexity, judging by the evolution of the solution time, supplemented the parallel account with a sequential stage of calculations (possibly to control the solution). We develop a special method for assessing the rate of processing of input information by a person. It allowed us to estimate the level of parallelism of the calculation in the associative task. Parallelism of level from two to three was registered. The characteristic speed of information processing in the sequential case (about one and a half characters per second) is twice less than the typical speed of human image recognition. Apparently the difference in processing time actually spent on the calculation process. For an associative problem in the case of a minimum amount of information, the solution time is near to the non-associativity case or less than twice. This is probably due to the fact that for a small number of characters recognition almost exhausts the calculations for the used non-associative problem.

Computer simulation of the process soil treatment by tillage tools of soil processing machines
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 3, pp. 607-627

The paper analyzes the methods of studying the process of interaction of soil environments with the tillage tools of soil processing machines. The mathematical methods of numerical modeling are considered in detail, which make it possible to overcome the disadvantages of analytical and empirical approaches. A classification and overview of the possibilities the continuous (FEM — finite element method, CFD — computational fluid dynamics) and discrete (DEM — discrete element method, SPH — hydrodynamics of smoothed particles) numerical methods is presented. Based on the discrete element method, a mathematical model has been developed that represents the soil in the form of a set of interacting small spherical elements. The working surfaces of the tillage tool are presented in the framework of the finite element approximation in the form of a combination of many elementary triangles. The model calculates the movement of soil elements under the action of contact forces of soil elements with each other and with the working surfaces of the tillage tool (elastic forces, dry and viscous friction forces). This makes it possible to assess the influence of the geometric parameters of the tillage tools, technological parameters of the process and soil parameters on the geometric indicators of soil displacement, indicators of the self-installation of tools, power loads, quality indicators of loosening and spatial distribution of indicators. A total of 22 indicators were investigated (or the distribution of the indicator in space). This makes it possible to reproduce changes in the state of the system of elements of the soil (soil cultivation process) and determine the total mechanical effect of the elements on the moving tillage tools of the implement. A demonstration of the capabilities of the mathematical model is given by the example of a study of soil cultivation with a disk cultivator battery. In the computer experiment, a virtual soil channel of 5×1.4 m in size and a 3D model of a disk cultivator battery were used. The radius of the soil particles was taken to be 18 mm, the speed of the tillage tool was 1 m/s, the total simulation time was 5 s. The processing depth was 10 cm at angles of attack of 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30°. The verification of the reliability of the simulation results was carried out on a laboratory stand for volumetric dynamometry by examining a full-scale sample, made in full accordance with the investigated 3D-model. The control was carried out according to three components of the traction resistance vector: $F_x$, $F_y$ and $F_z$. Comparison of the data obtained experimentally with the simulation data showed that the discrepancy is not more than 22.2%, while in all cases the maximum discrepancy was observed at angles of attack of the disk battery of 30°. Good consistency of data on three key power parameters confirms the reliability of the whole complex of studied indicators.

Method for prediction of aerodynamic characteristics of helicopter rotors based on edge-based schemes in code NOISEtte
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 5, pp. 1097-1122

The paper gives a detailed description of the developed methods for simulating the turbulent flow around a helicopter rotor and calculating its aerodynamic characteristics. The system of Reynolds-averaged Navier – Stokes equations for a viscous compressible gas closed by the Spalart –Allmaras turbulence model is used as the basic mathematical model. The model is formulated in a non-inertial rotating coordinate system associated with a rotor. To set the boundary conditions on the surface of the rotor, wall functions are used.

The numerical solution of the resulting system of differential equations is carried out on mixed-element unstructured grids including prismatic layers near the surface of a streamlined body. The numerical method is based on the original vertex-centered finite-volume EBR schemes. A feature of these schemes is their higher accuracy which is achieved through the use of edge-based reconstruction of variables on extended quasi-onedimensional stencils, and a moderate computational cost which allows for serial computations. The methods of Roe and Lax – Friedrichs are used as approximate Riemann solvers. The Roe method is corrected in the case of low Mach flows. When dealing with discontinuities or solutions with large gradients, a quasi-one-dimensional WENO scheme or local switching to a quasi-one-dimensional TVD-type reconstruction is used. The time integration is carried out according to the implicit three-layer second-order scheme with Newton linearization of the system of difference equations. To solve the system of linear equations, the stabilized conjugate gradient method is used.

The numerical methods are implemented as a part of the in-house code NOISEtte according to the two-level MPI–OpenMP parallel model, which allows high-performance computations on meshes consisting of hundreds of millions of nodes, while involving hundreds of thousands of CPU cores of modern supercomputers.

Based on the results of numerical simulation, the aerodynamic characteristics of the helicopter rotor are calculated, namely, trust, torque and their dimensionless coefficients.

Validation of the developed technique is carried out by simulating the turbulent flow around the Caradonna – Tung two-blade rotor and the KNRTU-KAI four-blade model rotor in hover mode mode, tail rotor in duct, and rigid main rotor in oblique flow. The numerical results are compared with the available experimental data.

Numerical model of jack-up rig’s mechanical behavior under seismic loading
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 4, pp. 853-871

The paper presents results of numerical modeling of stress-strain state of jack-up rigs used for shelf hydrocarbon reservoirs exploitation. The work studied the equilibrium stress state of a jack-up rig standing on seafloor and mechanical behavior of the rig under seismic loading. Surface elastic wave caused by a distant earthquake acts a reason for the loading. Stability of jack-up rig is the main topic of the research, as stability can be lost due to redistribution of stresses and strains in the elements of the rig due to seismic loading. Modeling results revealed that seismic loading can indeed lead to intermittent growth of stresses in particular elements of the rig’s support legs resulting into stability loss. These results were obtained using the finite element-based numerical scheme. The paper contains the proof of modeling results convergence obtained from analysis of one problem — the problem of stresses and strains distributions for the contact problem of a rigid cylinder indenting on elastic half space. The comparison between numerical and analytical solutions proved the used numerical scheme to be correct, as obtained results converged. The paper presents an analysis of the different factors influencing the mechanical behavior of the studied system. These factors include the degree of seismic loading, mechanical properties of seafloor sediments, and depth of support legs penetration. The results obtained from numerical modeling made it possible to formulate preliminary conclusions regarding the need to take site-specific conditions into account whenever planning the use of jack-up rigs, especially, in the regions with seismic activity. The approach presented in the paper can be used to evaluate risks related to offshore hydrocarbon reservoirs exploitation and development, while the reported numerical scheme can be used to solve some contact problems of theory of elasticity with the need to analyze dynamic processes.

Development of a computational environment for mathematical modeling of superconducting nanostructures with a magnet
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 5, pp. 1349-1358

Now days the main research activity in the field of nanotechnology is aimed at the creation, study and application of new materials and new structures. Recently, much attention has been attracted by the possibility of controlling magnetic properties using a superconducting current, as well as the influence of magnetic dynamics on the current–voltage characteristics of hybrid superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) nanostructures. In particular, such structures include the S/F/S Josephson junction or molecular nanomagnets coupled to the Josephson junctions. Theoretical studies of the dynamics of such structures need processes of a large number of coupled nonlinear equations. Numerical modeling of hybrid superconductor/magnet nanostructures implies the calculation of both magnetic dynamics and the dynamics of the superconducting phase, which strongly increases their complexity and scale, so it is advisable to use heterogeneous computing systems.

In the course of studying the physical properties of these objects, it becomes necessary to numerically solve complex systems of nonlinear differential equations, which requires significant time and computational resources.

The currently existing micromagnetic algorithms and frameworks are based on the finite difference or finite element method and are extremely useful for modeling the dynamics of magnetization on a wide time scale. However, the functionality of existing packages does not allow to fully implement the desired computation scheme.

The aim of the research is to develop a unified environment for modeling hybrid superconductor/magnet nanostructures, providing access to solvers and developed algorithms, and based on a heterogeneous computing paradigm that allows research of superconducting elements in nanoscale structures with magnets and hybrid quantum materials. In this paper, we investigate resonant phenomena in the nanomagnet system associated with the Josephson junction. Such a system has rich resonant physics. To study the possibility of magnetic reversal depending on the model parameters, it is necessary to solve numerically the Cauchy problem for a system of nonlinear equations. For numerical simulation of hybrid superconductor/magnet nanostructures, a computing environment based on the heterogeneous HybriLIT computing platform is implemented. During the calculations, all the calculation times obtained were averaged over three launches. The results obtained here are of great practical importance and provide the necessary information for evaluating the physical parameters in superconductor/magnet hybrid nanostructures.
