FlowVision: Industrial computational fluid dynamics
Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 1, pp. 5-20Views (last year): 30. Citations: 8 (RSCI).The work submits new release of the FlowVision software designed for automation of engineering calculations in computational fluid dynamics: FlowVision 3.09.05. The FlowVision software is used for solving different industrial problems. Its popularity is based on the capability to solve complex non-tradition problems involving different physical processes. The paradigm of complete automation of labor-intensive and time-taking processes like grid generation makes FlowVision attractive for many engineers. FlowVision is completely developer-independent software. It includes an advanced graphical interface, the system for specifying a computational project as well as the system for flow visualization on planes, on curvilinear surfaces and in volume by means of different methods: plots, color contours, iso-lines, iso-surfaces, vector fields. Besides that, FlowVision provides tools for calculation of integral characteristics on surfaces and in volumetric regions.
The software is based on the finite-volume approach to approximation of the partial differential equations describing fluid motion and accompanying physical processes. It provides explicit and implicit methods for time integration of these equations. The software includes automated generator of unstructured grid with capability of its local dynamic adaptation. The solver involves two-level parallelism which allows calculations on computers with distributed and shared memory (coexisting in the same hardware). FlowVision incorporates a wide spectrum of physical models: different turbulence models, models for mass transfer accounting for chemical reactions and radioactive decay, several combustion models, a dispersed phase model, an electro-hydrodynamic model, an original VOF model for tracking moving interfaces. It should be noted that turbulence can be simulated within URANS, LES, and ILES approaches. FlowVision simulates fluid motion with velocities corresponding to all possible flow regimes: from incompressible to hypersonic. This is achieved by using an original all-speed velocity-pressure split algorithm for integration of the Navier-Stokes equations.
FlowVision enables solving multi-physic problems with use of different modeling tools. For instance, one can simulate multi-phase flows with use of the VOF method, flows past bodies moving across a stationary grid (within Euler approach), flows in rotary machines with use of the technology of sliding grid. Besides that, the software solves fluid-structure interaction problems using the technology of two-way coupling of FlowVision with finite-element codes. Two examples of solving challenging problems in the FlowVision software are demonstrated in the given article. The first one is splashdown of a spacecraft after deceleration by means of jet engines. This problem is characterized by presence of moving bodies and contact surface between the air and the water in the computational domain. The supersonic jets interact with the air-water interphase. The second problem is simulation of the work of a human heart with artificial and natural valves designed on the basis of tomographic investigations with use of a finite-element model of the heart. This problem is characterized by two-way coupling between the “liquid” computational domain and the finite-element model of the hart muscles.

Modern methods of mathematical modeling of blood flow using reduced order methods
Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 5, pp. 581-604Views (last year): 62. Citations: 2 (RSCI).The study of the physiological and pathophysiological processes in the cardiovascular system is one of the important contemporary issues, which is addressed in many works. In this work, several approaches to the mathematical modelling of the blood flow are considered. They are based on the spatial order reduction and/or use a steady-state approach. Attention is paid to the discussion of the assumptions and suggestions, which are limiting the scope of such models. Some typical mathematical formulations are considered together with the brief review of their numerical implementation. In the first part, we discuss the models, which are based on the full spatial order reduction and/or use a steady-state approach. One of the most popular approaches exploits the analogy between the flow of the viscous fluid in the elastic tubes and the current in the electrical circuit. Such models can be used as an individual tool. They also used for the formulation of the boundary conditions in the models using one dimensional (1D) and three dimensional (3D) spatial coordinates. The use of the dynamical compartment models allows describing haemodynamics over an extended period (by order of tens of cardiac cycles and more). Then, the steady-state models are considered. They may use either total spatial reduction or two dimensional (2D) spatial coordinates. This approach is used for simulation the blood flow in the region of microcirculation. In the second part, we discuss the models, which are based on the spatial order reduction to the 1D coordinate. The models of this type require relatively small computational power relative to the 3D models. Within the scope of this approach, it is also possible to include all large vessels of the organism. The 1D models allow simulation of the haemodynamic parameters in every vessel, which is included in the model network. The structure and the parameters of such a network can be set according to the literature data. It also exists methods of medical data segmentation. The 1D models may be derived from the 3D Navier – Stokes equations either by asymptotic analysis or by integrating them over a volume. The major assumptions are symmetric flow and constant shape of the velocity profile over a cross-section. These assumptions are somewhat restrictive and arguable. Some of the current works paying attention to the 1D model’s validation, to the comparing different 1D models and the comparing 1D models with clinical data. The obtained results reveal acceptable accuracy. It allows concluding, that the 1D approach can be used in medical applications. 1D models allow describing several dynamical processes, such as pulse wave propagation, Korotkov’s tones. Some physiological conditions may be included in the 1D models: gravity force, muscles contraction force, regulation and autoregulation.

Development of network computational models for the study of nonlinear wave processes on graphs
Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 5, pp. 777-814In various applications arise problems modeled by nonlinear partial differential equations on graphs (networks, trees). In order to study such problems and various extreme situations arose in the problems of designing and optimizing networks developed the computational model based on solving the corresponding boundary problems for partial differential equations of hyperbolic type on graphs (networks, trees). As applications, three different problems were chosen solved in the framework of the general approach of network computational models. The first was modeling of traffic flow. In solving this problem, a macroscopic approach was used in which the transport flow is described by a nonlinear system of second-order hyperbolic equations. The results of numerical simulations showed that the model developed as part of the proposed approach well reproduces the real situation various sections of the Moscow transport network on significant time intervals and can also be used to select the most optimal traffic management strategy in the city. The second was modeling of data flows in computer networks. In this problem data flows of various connections in packet data network were simulated as some continuous medium flows. Conceptual and mathematical network models are proposed. The numerical simulation was carried out in comparison with the NS-2 network simulation system. The results showed that in comparison with the NS-2 packet model the developed streaming model demonstrates significant savings in computing resources while ensuring a good level of similarity and allows us to simulate the behavior of complex globally distributed IP networks. The third was simulation of the distribution of gas impurities in ventilation networks. It was developed the computational mathematical model for the propagation of finely dispersed or gas impurities in ventilation networks using the gas dynamics equations by numerical linking of regions of different sizes. The calculations shown that the model with good accuracy allows to determine the distribution of gas-dynamic parameters in the pipeline network and solve the problems of dynamic ventilation management.

Global limit cycle bifurcations of a polynomial Euler–Lagrange–Liénard system
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 4, pp. 693-705In this paper, using our bifurcation-geometric approach, we study global dynamics and solve the problem of the maximum number and distribution of limit cycles (self-oscillating regimes corresponding to states of dynamical equilibrium) in a planar polynomial mechanical system of the Euler–Lagrange–Liйnard type. Such systems are also used to model electrical, ecological, biomedical and other systems, which greatly facilitates the study of the corresponding real processes and systems with complex internal dynamics. They are used, in particular, in mechanical systems with damping and stiffness. There are a number of examples of technical systems that are described using quadratic damping in second-order dynamical models. In robotics, for example, quadratic damping appears in direct-coupled control and in nonlinear devices, such as variable impedance (resistance) actuators. Variable impedance actuators are of particular interest to collaborative robotics. To study the character and location of singular points in the phase plane of the Euler–Lagrange–Liйnard polynomial system, we use our method the meaning of which is to obtain the simplest (well-known) system by vanishing some parameters (usually, field rotation parameters) of the original system and then to enter sequentially these parameters studying the dynamics of singular points in the phase plane. To study the singular points of the system, we use the classical Poincarй index theorems, as well as our original geometric approach based on the application of the Erugin twoisocline method which is especially effective in the study of infinite singularities. Using the obtained information on the singular points and applying canonical systems with field rotation parameters, as well as using the geometric properties of the spirals filling the internal and external regions of the limit cycles and applying our geometric approach to qualitative analysis, we study limit cycle bifurcations of the system under consideration.

Quantile shape measures for heavy-tailed distributions
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 5, pp. 1041-1077Currently, journal papers contain numerous examples of the use of heavy-tailed distributions for applied research on various complex systems. Models of extreme data are usually limited to a small set of distribution shapes that in this field of applied research historically been used. It is possible to increase the composition of the set of probability distributions shapes through comparing the measures of the distribution shapes and choosing the most suitable implementations. The example of a beta distribution of the second kind shown that the lack of definability of the moments of heavy-tailed implementations of the beta family of distributions limits the applicability of the existing classical methods of moments for studying the distributions shapes when are characterized heavy tails. For this reason, the development of new methods for comparing distributions based on quantile shape measures free from the restrictions on the shape parameters remains relevant study the possibility of constructing a space of quantile measures of shapes for comparing distributions with heavy tails. The operation purpose consists in computer research of creation possibility of space of the quantile’s measures for the comparing of distributions property with heavy tails. On the basis of computer simulation there the distributions implementations in measures space of shapes were been shown. Mapping distributions in space only of the parametrical measures of shapes has shown that the imposition of regions for heavy tails distribution made impossible compare the shape of distributions belonging to different type in the space of quantile measures of skewness and kurtosis. It is well known that shape information measures such as entropy and entropy uncertainty interval contain additional information about the shape measure of heavy-tailed distributions. In this paper, a quantile entropy coefficient is proposed as an additional independent measure of shape, which is based on the ratio of entropy and quantile uncertainty intervals. Also estimates of quantile entropy coefficients are obtained for a number of well-known heavy-tailed distributions. The possibility of comparing the distributions shapes with realizations of the beta distribution of the second kind is illustrated by the example of the lognormal distribution and the Pareto distribution. Due to mapping the position of stable distributions in the three-dimensional space of quantile measures of shapes estimate made it possible the shape parameters to of the beta distribution of the second kind, for which shape is closest to the Lévy shape. From the paper material it follows that the display of distributions in the three-dimensional space of quantile measures of the forms of skewness, kurtosis and entropy coefficient significantly expands the possibility of comparing the forms for distributions with heavy tails.

A problem-modeling environment for the numerical solution of the Boltzmann equation on a cluster architecture for analyzing gas-kinetic processes in the interelectrode gap of thermal emission converters
Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 2, pp. 219-232Views (last year): 24.This paper is devoted to the application of the method of numerical solution of the Boltzmann equation for the solution of the problem of modeling the behavior of radionuclides in the cavity of the interelectric gap of a multielement electrogenerating channel. The analysis of gas-kinetic processes of thermionic converters is important for proving the design of the power-generating channel. The paper reviews two constructive schemes of the channel: with one- and two-way withdrawal of gaseous fission products into a vacuum-cesium system. The analysis uses a two-dimensional transport equation of the second-order accuracy for the solution of the left-hand side and the projection method for solving the right-hand side — the collision integral. In the course of the work, a software package was implemented that makes it possible to calculate on the cluster architecture by using the algorithm of parallelizing the left-hand side of the equation; the paper contains the results of the analysis of the dependence of the calculation efficiency on the number of parallel nodes. The paper contains calculations of data on the distribution of pressures of gaseous fission products in the gap cavity, calculations use various sets of initial pressures and flows; the dependency of the radionuclide pressure in the collector region was determined as a function of cesium pressures at the ends of the gap. The tests in the loop channel of a nuclear reactor confirm the obtained results.

Meshless algorithm for calculating the interaction of large particles with a shock layer in supersonic heterogeneous flows
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 5, pp. 1007-1027The work is devoted to numerical modeling of two-phase flows, namely, the calculation of supersonic flow around a blunt body by a viscous gas flow with an admixture of large high inertia particles. The system of unsteady Navier – Stokes equations is numerically solved by the meshless method. It uses the cloud of points in space to represent the fields of gas parameters. The spatial derivatives of gas parameters and functions are approximated by the least square method to calculate convective and viscous fluxes in the Navier – Stokes system of equations. The convective fluxes are calculated by the HLLC method. The third-order MUSCL reconstruction scheme is used to achieve high order accuracy. The viscous fluxes are calculated by the second order approximation scheme. The streamlined body surface is represented by a model of an isothermal wall. It implements the conditions for the zero velocity and zero pressure gradient, which is also modeled using the least squares method.
Every moving body is surrounded by its own cloud of points belongs to body’s domain and moving along with it in space. The explicit three-sage Runge–Kutta method is used to solve numerically the system of gas dynamics equations in the main coordinate system and local coordinate systems of each particle.
Two methods for the moving objects modeling with reverse impact on the gas flow have been implemented. The first one uses stationary point clouds with fixed neighbors within the same domain. When regions overlap, some nodes of one domain, for example, the boundary nodes of the particle domain, are excluded from the calculation and filled with the values of gas parameters from the nearest nodes of another domain using the least squares approximation of gradients. The internal nodes of the particle domain are used to reconstruct the gas parameters in the overlapped nodes of the main domain. The second method also uses the exclusion of nodes in overlapping areas, but in this case the nodes of another domain take the place of the excluded neighbors to build a single connected cloud of nodes. At the same time, some of the nodes are moving, and some are stationary. Nodes membership to different domains and their relative speed are taken into account when calculating fluxes.
The results of modeling the motion of a particle in a stationary gas and the flow around a stationary particle by an incoming flow at the same relative velocity show good agreement for both presented methods.

On periodic modes of body motion along a horizontal rough plane, performed by moving two internal masses
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 1, pp. 17-34We consider a mechanical system consisting of a rigid body and two masses that move inside the body along mutually perpendicular guides. The body has a flat face, which rests on a horizontal rough plane. The masses move inside the body in a vertical plane according to a harmonic law with the same period. It is assumed that the friction forces arising in the area of contact between the body and the supporting plane are described by the classical model of dry Coulomb friction, and the parameters of the problem are chosen so that the body can perform translationally rectilinearly motion. This mechanical system can serve as the simplest model of a capsule robot moving on a solid surface by moving internal elements.
We study the modes of motion of a body in which its velocity is periodic with a period equal to the period of motion of the internal masses. It is shown that if the body can starts to move from a state of rest by means of displacements of the masses, then for any permissible values of the problem parameters there is a periodic mode of motion. Depending on the parameter values, the nature of the periodic motion can be essentially different. In particular, both reversible and nonreversible driving modes are possible. In the non-reversion mode, the body moves in the same direction, and intervals of movement alternate with intervals of rest (body sticking). In the reversal mode, the body moves in both positive and negative directions over a time interval equal to one period. In this case, the body makes two stops during the period of movement. After stopping, the body either immediately continues moving in the opposite direction, or enters a sticking zone and rests for a finite period of time, and then stats moving in the opposite direction. It was also found that, at certain parameter values, a periodic reversal mode is possible, in which the body moves without sticking. A detailed classification of all possible types of periodic motion modes was carried out. Their complete qualitative description is given and the regions of their existence in the three-dimensional space of the parameters are constructed.

Traveling waves in a parabolic problem with a rotation on the circle
Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 5, pp. 705-716Views (last year): 11. Citations: 5 (RSCI).Optical systems with two-dimensional feedback demonstrate wide possibilities for studying the nucleation and development processes of dissipative structures. Feedback allows to influence the dynamics of the optical system by controlling the transformation of spatial variables performed by prisms, lenses, dynamic holograms and other devices. A nonlinear interferometer with a mirror image of a field in two-dimensional feedback is one of the simplest optical systems in which is realized the nonlocal nature of light fields.
A mathematical model of optical systems with two-dimensional feedback is a nonlinear parabolic equation with rotation transformation of a spatial variable and periodicity conditions on a circle. Such problems are investigated: bifurcation of the traveling wave type stationary structures, how the form of the solution changes as the diffusion coefficient decreases, dynamics of the solution’s stability when the bifurcation parameter leaves the critical value. For the first time as a parameter bifurcation was taken of diffusion coefficient.
The method of central manifolds and the Galerkin’s method are used in this paper. The method of central manifolds and the Galerkin’s method are used in this paper. The method of central manifolds allows to prove a theorem on the existence and form of the traveling wave type solution neighborhood of the bifurcation value. The first traveling wave born as a result of the Andronov –Hopf bifurcation in the transition of the bifurcation parameter through the сritical value. According to the central manifold theorem, the first traveling wave is born orbitally stable.
Since the above theorem gives the opportunity to explore solutions are born only in the vicinity of the critical values of the bifurcation parameter, the decision to study the dynamics of traveling waves of change during the withdrawal of the bifurcation parameter in the supercritical region, the formalism of the Galerkin method was used. In accordance with the method of the central manifold is made Galerkin’s approximation of the problem solution. As the bifurcation parameter decreases and its transition through the critical value, the zero solution of the problem loses stability in an oscillatory manner. As a result, a periodic solution of the traveling wave type branches off from the zero solution. This wave is born orbitally stable. With further reduction of the parameter and its passage through the next critical value from the zero solution, the second solution of the traveling wave type is produced as a result of the Andronov –Hopf bifurcation. This wave is born unstable with an instability index of two.
Numerical calculations have shown that the application of the Galerkin’s method leads to correct results. The results obtained are in good agreement with the results obtained by other authors and can be used to establish experiments on the study of phenomena in optical systems with feedback.

Investigation of Turing structures formation under the influence of wave instability
Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 3, pp. 397-412Views (last year): 21.A classical for nonlinear dynamics model, Brusselator, is considered, being augmented by addition of a third variable, which plays the role of a fast-diffusing inhibitor. The model is investigated in one-dimensional case in the parametric domain, where two types of diffusive instabilities of system’s homogeneous stationary state are manifested: wave instability, which leads to spontaneous formation of autowaves, and Turing instability, which leads to spontaneous formation of stationary dissipative structures, or Turing structures. It is shown that, due to the subcritical nature of Turing bifurcation, the interaction of two instabilities in this system results in spontaneous formation of stationary dissipative structures already before the passage of Turing bifurcation. In response to different perturbations of spatially uniform stationary state, different stable regimes are manifested in the vicinity of the double bifurcation point in the parametric region under study: both pure regimes, which consist of either stationary or autowave dissipative structures; and mixed regimes, in which different modes dominate in different areas of the computational space. In the considered region of the parametric space, the system is multistable and exhibits high sensitivity to initial noise conditions, which leads to blurring of the boundaries between qualitatively different regimes in the parametric region. At that, even in the area of dominance of mixed modes with prevalence of Turing structures, the establishment of a pure autowave regime has significant probability. In the case of stable mixed regimes, a sufficiently strong local perturbation in the area of the computational space, where autowave mode is manifested, can initiate local formation of new stationary dissipative structures. Local perturbation of the stationary homogeneous state in the parametric region under investidation leads to a qualitatively similar map of established modes, the zone of dominance of pure autowave regimes being expanded with the increase of local perturbation amplitude. In two-dimensional case, mixed regimes turn out to be only transient — upon the appearance of localized Turing structures under the influence of wave regime, they eventually occupy all available space.
