  1. In the last decades, universal scenarios of the transition to chaos in dynamic systems have been well studied. The scenario of the transition to chaos is defined as a sequence of bifurcations that occur in the system under the variation one of the governing parameters and lead to a qualitative change in dynamics, starting from the regular mode and ending with chaotic behavior. Typical scenarios include a cascade of period doubling bifurcations (Feigenbaum scenario), the breakup of a low-dimensional torus (Ruelle–Takens scenario), and the transition to chaos through the intermittency (Pomeau–Manneville scenario). In more complicated spatially distributed dynamic systems, the complexity of dynamic behavior growing with a parameter change is closely intertwined with the formation of spatial structures. However, the question of whether the spatial and temporal axes could completely exchange roles in some scenario still remains open. In this paper, for the first time, we propose a mathematical model of convection–diffusion–reaction, in which a spatial transition to chaos through the breakup of the quasi–periodic regime is realized in the framework of the Ruelle–Takens scenario. The physical system under consideration consists of two aqueous solutions of acid (A) and base (B), initially separated in space and placed in a vertically oriented Hele–Shaw cell subject to the gravity field. When the solutions are brought into contact, the frontal neutralization reaction of the second order A + B $\to$ C begins, which is accompanied by the production of salt (C). The process is characterized by a strong dependence of the diffusion coefficients of the reagents on their concentration, which leads to the appearance of two local zones of reduced density, in which chemoconvective fluid motions develop independently. Although the layers, in which convection develops, all the time remain separated by the interlayer of motionless fluid, they can influence each other via a diffusion of reagents through this interlayer. The emerging chemoconvective structure is the modulated standing wave that gradually breaks down over time, repeating the sequence of the bifurcation chain of the Ruelle–Takens scenario. We show that during the evolution of the system one of the spatial axes, directed along the reaction front, plays the role of time, and time itself starts to play the role of a control parameter.

Mathematical model of blood clotting in the portal vein
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 3, pp. 561-587

Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a significant complication during both the pre-transplant and postoperative periods of liver transplantation. The multifactorial etiology of PVT, the paradoxical hemostatic state in liver cirrhosis and the limited usefulness of standard coagulation tests highlight the necessity of formalized models to assess thrombosis risk.

Objective: Using a mathematical model of the blood coagulation system, investigate the influence of hemodynamic conditions and coagulation factor levels on the likelihood of thrombus formation in the portal vein.

The portal vein is modelled as a flow-through reactor with rapid convective mixing. The mathematical model is based on Panteleev et al. (2010) detailed kinetic scheme, incorporating equations for the extrinsic pathway of coagulation activation, positive and negative feedback loops, and inhibition of active factors. The resulting system of ordinary differential equations was integrated using a one-stage Rosenbrock method with complex coefficients.

Thrombin generation was shown to exhibit threshold dependence on blood flow velocity. Above a critical velocity, the initiation phase does not transition to the amplification phase. This corresponds to physiological conditions that prevent thrombus formation. We demonstrated that, at reduced fibrinogen concentrations characteristic of hepatic dysfunction, the critical velocity threshold above which thrombus formation is suppressed increases. This indicates the system’s heightened susceptibility to stasis. Protein C deficiency had minimal effect on thrombogenesis dynamics under the modeled conditions. The modeling results qualitatively agree with clinical data on fibrinogen distribution in PVT patients ($n$ = 932, Sklifosovsky Research Institute).

Comparative analysis of finite difference method and finite volume method for unsteady natural convection and thermal radiation in a cubical cavity filled with a diathermic medium
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 4, pp. 567-578

Comparative analysis of two numerical methods for simulation of unsteady natural convection and thermal surface radiation within a differentially heated cubical cavity has been carried out. The considered domain of interest had two isothermal opposite vertical faces, while other walls are adiabatic. The walls surfaces were diffuse and gray, namely, their directional spectral emissivity and absorptance do not depend on direction or wavelength but can depend on surface temperature. For the reflected radiation we had two approaches such as: 1) the reflected radiation is diffuse, namely, an intensity of the reflected radiation in any point of the surface is uniform for all directions; 2) the reflected radiation is uniform for each surface of the considered enclosure. Mathematical models formulated both in primitive variables “velocity–pressure” and in transformed variables “vector potential functions – vorticity vector” have been performed numerically using finite volume method and finite difference methods, respectively. It should be noted that radiative heat transfer has been analyzed using the net-radiation method in Poljak approach.

Using primitive variables and finite volume method for the considered boundary-value problem we applied power-law for an approximation of convective terms and central differences for an approximation of diffusive terms. The difference motion and energy equations have been solved using iterative method of alternating directions. Definition of the pressure field associated with velocity field has been performed using SIMPLE procedure.

Using transformed variables and finite difference method for the considered boundary-value problem we applied monotonic Samarsky scheme for convective terms and central differences for diffusive terms. Parabolic equations have been solved using locally one-dimensional Samarsky scheme. Discretization of elliptic equations for vector potential functions has been conducted using symmetric approximation of the second-order derivatives. Obtained difference equation has been solved by successive over-relaxation method. Optimal value of the relaxation parameter has been found on the basis of computational experiments.

As a result we have found the similar distributions of velocity and temperature in the case of these two approaches for different values of Rayleigh number, that illustrates an operability of the used techniques. The efficiency of transformed variables with finite difference method for unsteady problems has been shown.

Analysis of a numerical method for studying upward flame spread over solid material
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 6, pp. 755-774

Reduction of the fire hazard of polymeric materials is one of the important scientific and technical problems. Since complexity of experimental procedures associated with flame spread, establishing reacting flows theoretical basics turned out to be crucial field of modern fundamental science. In order to determine parameters of flame spread over solid combustible materials numerical modelling methods have to be improved. Large amount of physical and chemical processes taking place needed to be resolved not just separately one by one but in connection with each other in gas and solid phases.

Upward flame spread over vertical solid combustible material is followed by unsteady eddy structures of gas flow in the vicinity of flame zone caused by thermal instability and natural convection forces accelerating hot combustion products. At every moment different amount of heat energy is transferred from hot gas-phase flame to solid material because of eddy flow structures. Therefore, satisfactory heat flux and eddy flow modelling are important to estimate flame spread rate.

In the current study we evaluated parameters of numerical method for flame spread over solid combustible material problem taking into account coupled nature of complex interaction between gas phase, solid material and eddy flow resulted from natural convection. We studied aspects of different approximation schemes used in differential equations integration process over space and time, of fields relaxation during iterations procedure carried out inside time step, of different time step values.

Mathematical model formulated allows to simulate flame spread over solid combustible material. Fluid dynamics is modeled by Navier – Stokes system of equations, eddy flow is described by combined turbulent model RANS–LES (DDES), turbulent combustion is resolved by modified turbulent combustion model Eddy Break-Up taking into account kinetic effects, radiation transfer is modeled by spherical harmonics method of first order approximation (P1). The equations presented are solved in OpenFOAM software.

  5. The work is devoted to numerical modeling of two-phase flows, namely, the calculation of supersonic flow around a blunt body by a viscous gas flow with an admixture of large high inertia particles. The system of unsteady Navier – Stokes equations is numerically solved by the meshless method. It uses the cloud of points in space to represent the fields of gas parameters. The spatial derivatives of gas parameters and functions are approximated by the least square method to calculate convective and viscous fluxes in the Navier – Stokes system of equations. The convective fluxes are calculated by the HLLC method. The third-order MUSCL reconstruction scheme is used to achieve high order accuracy. The viscous fluxes are calculated by the second order approximation scheme. The streamlined body surface is represented by a model of an isothermal wall. It implements the conditions for the zero velocity and zero pressure gradient, which is also modeled using the least squares method.

Every moving body is surrounded by its own cloud of points belongs to body’s domain and moving along with it in space. The explicit three-sage Runge–Kutta method is used to solve numerically the system of gas dynamics equations in the main coordinate system and local coordinate systems of each particle.

Two methods for the moving objects modeling with reverse impact on the gas flow have been implemented. The first one uses stationary point clouds with fixed neighbors within the same domain. When regions overlap, some nodes of one domain, for example, the boundary nodes of the particle domain, are excluded from the calculation and filled with the values of gas parameters from the nearest nodes of another domain using the least squares approximation of gradients. The internal nodes of the particle domain are used to reconstruct the gas parameters in the overlapped nodes of the main domain. The second method also uses the exclusion of nodes in overlapping areas, but in this case the nodes of another domain take the place of the excluded neighbors to build a single connected cloud of nodes. At the same time, some of the nodes are moving, and some are stationary. Nodes membership to different domains and their relative speed are taken into account when calculating fluxes.

The results of modeling the motion of a particle in a stationary gas and the flow around a stationary particle by an incoming flow at the same relative velocity show good agreement for both presented methods.

Compact finite difference scheme for anisotropic convection Darcy
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 2, pp. 199-211

A compact finite difference scheme has been developed for modeling convection in a porous medium saturated with a fluid. We consider the problem for a rectangular domain with anisotropic permeability and thermal conductivity properties in terms of stream function and temperature deviation, taking into account Darcy's law. Boundary conditions of impenetrability and a linear distribution of temperature are set. This model is cosymmetric when certain conditions are imposed on the permeability and thermal conductivities. One parametric family of stationary convection regimes arises when mechanical equilibrium loses stability. A numerical method with a fourth-order finite difference approximation for spatial variables and a Runge – Kutta integrator for time has been developed. It has been proved that this scheme preserves cosymmetry. Numerical results for evaluating the critical Rayleigh number have been presented. We compare them with results obtained using a second-order finite-difference method. We show that critical Rayleigh numbers are repeated twice with very high accuracy, which proves cosymmetry preservation. Numerical evaluation of convective regimes and spectral properties are presented. The efficiency of the developed compact finite difference scheme on a nine-point stencil is assessed.

Numerical analysis of convective-radiative heat transfer in an air enclosure with a local heat source
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2014, v. 6, no. 3, pp. 383-396

Mathematical simulation of natural convection and surface radiation in a square air enclosure having isothermal vertical walls with a local heat source of constant temperature has been carried out. Mathematical model has been formulated on the basis of the dimensionless variables such as stream function, vorticity and temperature by using the Boussinesq approximation and diathermancy of air. Distributions of streamlines and isotherms reflecting an effect of Rayleigh number $ 10^3 \leqslant Ra \leqslant 10^6 $, surface emissivity $0 \leqslant ε < 1$, ratio between the length of heat source and the size of enclosure $0.2 \leqslant l/L \leqslant 0.6$ and dimensionless time $0 \leqslant τ \leqslant 100$ on fluid flow and heat transfer have been obtained. Correlations for the average heat transfer coefficient in dependence on $Ra$, $ε$ and $l/L$ have been ascertained.

The calculation of hydrodynamic impact on reentry vehicle during splashdown
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 1, pp. 37-46

The reentry vehicle of the transportation spacecraft that is being created by RSC Energia in regular mode makes soft landing on land surface using a parachute system and thruster devices. But in not standard situations the reentry vehicle also is capable of executing a splashdown. In that case, it becomes important to define the hydrodynamics impact on the reentry vehicle at the moment of the first contact with the surface of water and during submersion into water medium, and to study the dynamics of the vehicle behavior at more recent moments of time.

This article presents results of numerical studies of hydrodynamics forces on the conical vehicle during splashdown, done with the FlowVision software. The paper reviews the cases of the splashdown with inactive solid rocket motors on calm sea and the cases with interactions between rocket jets and the water surface. It presents data on the allocation of pressure on the vehicle in the process of the vehicle immersion into water medium and dynamics of the vehicle behavior after splashdown. The paper also shows flow structures in the area of the reentry vehicle at the different moments of time, and integral forces and moments acting on the vehicle.

For simulation process with moving interphases in the FlowVision software realized the model VOF (volume of fluid). Transfer of the phase boundary is described by the equation of volume fraction of this continuous phase in a computational cell. Transfer contact surface is described by the convection equation, and at the surface tension is taken into account by the Laplace pressure. Key features of the method is the splitting surface cells where data is entered the corresponding phase. Equations for both phases (like the equations of continuity, momentum, energy and others) in the surface cells are accounted jointly.

Simulation of convective-radiative heat transfer in a differentially heated rotating cavity
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 2, pp. 195-207

Mathematical simulation of unsteady natural convection and thermal surface radiation within a rotating square enclosure was performed. The considered domain of interest had two isothermal opposite walls subjected to constant low and high temperatures, while other walls are adiabatic. The walls were diffuse and gray. The considered cavity rotated with constant angular velocity relative to the axis that was perpendicular to the cavity and crossed the cavity in the center. Mathematical model, formulated in dimensionless transformed variables “stream function – vorticity” using the Boussinesq approximation and diathermic approach for the medium, was performed numerically using the finite difference method. The vorticity dispersion equation and energy equation were solved using locally one-dimensional Samarskii scheme. The diffusive terms were approximated by central differences, while the convective terms were approximated using monotonic Samarskii scheme. The difference equations were solved by the Thomas algorithm. The approximated Poisson equation for the stream function was solved by successive over-relaxation method. Optimal value of the relaxation parameter was found on the basis of computational experiments. Radiative heat transfer was analyzed using the net-radiation method in Poljak approach. The developed computational code was tested using the grid independence analysis and experimental and numerical results for the model problem.

Numerical analysis of unsteady natural convection and thermal surface radiation within the rotating enclosure was performed for the following parameters: Ra = 103–106, Ta = 0–105, Pr = 0.7, ε = 0–0.9. All distributions were obtained for the twentieth complete revolution when one can find the periodic behavior of flow and heat transfer. As a result we revealed that at low angular velocity the convective flow can intensify but the following growth of angular velocity leads to suppression of the convective flow. The radiative Nusselt number changes weakly with the Taylor number.

Difference scheme for solving problems of hydrodynamics for large grid Peclet numbers
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 5, pp. 833-848

The paper discusses the development and application of the accounting rectangular cell fullness method with material substance, in particular, a liquid, to increase the smoothness and accuracy of a finite-difference solution of hydrodynamic problems with a complex shape of the boundary surface. Two problems of computational hydrodynamics are considered to study the possibilities of the proposed difference schemes: the spatial-twodimensional flow of a viscous fluid between two coaxial semi-cylinders and the transfer of substances between coaxial semi-cylinders. Discretization of diffusion and convection operators was performed on the basis of the integro-interpolation method, taking into account taking into account the fullness of cells and without it. It is proposed to use a difference scheme, for solving the problem of diffusion – convection at large grid Peclet numbers, that takes into account the cell population function, and a scheme on the basis of linear combination of the Upwind and Standard Leapfrog difference schemes with weight coefficients obtained by minimizing the approximation error at small Courant numbers. As a reference, an analytical solution describing the Couette – Taylor flow is used to estimate the accuracy of the numerical solution. The relative error of calculations reaches 70% in the case of the direct use of rectangular grids (stepwise approximation of the boundaries), under the same conditions using the proposed method allows to reduce the error to 6%. It is shown that the fragmentation of a rectangular grid by 2–8 times in each of the spatial directions does not lead to the same increase in the accuracy that numerical solutions have, obtained taking into account the fullness of the cells. The proposed difference schemes on the basis of linear combination of the Upwind and Standard Leapfrog difference schemes with weighting factors of 2/3 and 1/3, respectively, obtained by minimizing the order of approximation error, for the diffusion – convection problem have a lower grid viscosity and, as a corollary, more precisely, describe the behavior of the solution in the case of large grid Peclet numbers.
