Transport modeling: averaging price matrices
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 2, pp. 317-327This paper considers various approaches to averaging the generalized travel costs calculated for different modes of travel in the transportation network. The mode of transportation is understood to mean both the mode of transport, for example, a car or public transport, and movement without the use of transport, for example, on foot. The task of calculating the trip matrices includes the task of calculating the total matrices, in other words, estimating the total demand for movements by all modes, as well as the task of splitting the matrices according to the mode, also called modal splitting. To calculate trip matrices, gravitational, entropy and other models are used, in which the probability of movement between zones is estimated based on a certain measure of the distance of these zones from each other. Usually, the generalized cost of moving along the optimal path between zones is used as a distance measure. However, the generalized cost of movement differs for different modes of movement. When calculating the total trip matrices, it becomes necessary to average the generalized costs by modes of movement. The averaging procedure is subject to the natural requirement of monotonicity in all arguments. This requirement is not met by some commonly used averaging methods, for example, averaging with weights. The problem of modal splitting is solved by applying the methods of discrete choice theory. In particular, within the framework of the theory of discrete choice, correct methods have been developed for averaging the utility of alternatives that are monotonic in all arguments. The authors propose some adaptation of the methods of the theory of discrete choice for application to the calculation of the average cost of movements in the gravitational and entropy models. The transfer of averaging formulas from the context of the modal splitting model to the trip matrix calculation model requires the introduction of new parameters and the derivation of conditions for the possible value of these parameters, which was done in this article. The issues of recalibration of the gravitational function, which is necessary when switching to a new averaging method, if the existing function is calibrated taking into account the use of the weighted average cost, were also considered. The proposed methods were implemented on the example of a small fragment of the transport network. The results of calculations are presented, demonstrating the advantage of the proposed methods.

Intersections present a very demanding environment for all the parties involved. Challenges arise from complex vehicle trajectories; occasional absence of lane markings to guide vehicles; split phases that prevent determining who has the right of way; invisible vehicle approaches; illegal movements; simultaneous interactions among pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles. Unsurprisingly, most demonstrations of AVs are on freeways; but the full potential of automated vehicles — personalized transit, driverless taxis, delivery vehicles — can only be realized when AVs can sense the intersection environment to efficiently and safely maneuver through intersections.
AVs are equipped with an array of on-board sensors to interpret and suitably engage with their surroundings. Advanced algorithms utilize data streams from such sensors to support the movement of autonomous vehicles through a wide range of traffic and climatic conditions. However, there exist situations, in which additional information about the upcoming traffic environment would be beneficial to better inform the vehicles’ in-built tracking and navigation algorithms. A potential source for such information is from in-pavement sensors at an intersection that can be used to differentiate between motorized and non-motorized modes and track road user movements and interactions. This type of information, in addition to signal phasing, can be provided to the AV as it approaches an intersection, and incorporated into an improved prior for the probabilistic algorithms used to classify and track movement in the AV’s field of vision.
This paper is concerned with the situation in which there are objects that are not visible to the AV. The driving context is that of an intersection, and the lack of visibility is due to other vehicles that obstruct the AV’s view, leading to the creation of blind zones. Such obstruction is commonplace in intersections.
Our objective is:
1) inform a vehicle crossing the intersection about its potential blind zones;
2) inform the vehicle about the presence of agents (other vehicles, bicyclists or pedestrians) in those blind zones.

Cloud interpretation of the entropy model for calculating the trip matrix
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 1, pp. 89-103As the population of cities grows, the need to plan for the development of transport infrastructure becomes more acute. For this purpose, transport modeling packages are created. These packages usually contain a set of convex optimization problems, the iterative solution of which leads to the desired equilibrium distribution of flows along the paths. One of the directions for the development of transport modeling is the construction of more accurate generalized models that take into account different types of passengers, their travel purposes, as well as the specifics of personal and public modes of transport that agents can use. Another important direction of transport models development is to improve the efficiency of the calculations performed. Since, due to the large dimension of modern transport networks, the search for a numerical solution to the problem of equilibrium distribution of flows along the paths is quite expensive. The iterative nature of the entire solution process only makes this worse. One of the approaches leading to a reduction in the number of calculations performed is the construction of consistent models that allow to combine the blocks of a 4-stage model into a single optimization problem. This makes it possible to eliminate the iterative running of blocks, moving from solving a separate optimization problem at each stage to some general problem. Early work has proven that such approaches provide equivalent solutions. However, it is worth considering the validity and interpretability of these methods. The purpose of this article is to substantiate a single problem, that combines both the calculation of the trip matrix and the modal choice, for the generalized case when there are different layers of demand, types of agents and classes of vehicles in the transport network. The article provides possible interpretations for the gauge parameters used in the problem, as well as for the dual factors associated with the balance constraints. The authors of the article also show the possibility of combining the considered problem with a block for determining network load into a single optimization problem.

Migration processes modelling: methods and tools (overview)
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 6, pp. 1205-1232Migration has a significant impact on the shaping of the demographic structure of the territories population, the state of regional and local labour markets. As a rule, rapid change in the working-age population of any territory due to migration processes results in an imbalance in supply and demand on labour markets and a change in the demographic structure of the population. Migration is also to a large extent a reflection of socio-economic processes taking place in the society. Hence, the issues related to the study of migration factors, the direction, intensity and structure of migration flows, and the prediction of their magnitude are becoming topical issues these days.
Mathematical tools are often used to analyze, predict migration processes and assess their consequences, allowing for essentially accurate modelling of migration processes for different territories on the basis of the available statistical data. In recent years, quite a number of scientific papers on modelling internal and external migration flows using mathematical methods have appeared both in Russia and in foreign countries in recent years. Consequently, there has been a need to systematize the currently most commonly used methods and tools applied in migration modelling to form a coherent picture of the main trends and research directions in this field.
The presented review considers the main approaches to migration modelling and the main components of migration modelling methodology, i. e. stages, methods, models and model classification. Their comparative analysis was also conducted and general recommendations on the choice of mathematical tools for modelling were developed. The review contains two sections: migration modelling methods and migration models. The first section describes the main methods used in the model development process — econometric, cellular automata, system-dynamic, probabilistic, balance, optimization and cluster analysis. Based on the analysis of modern domestic and foreign publications on migration, the most common classes of models — regression, agent-based, simulation, optimization, probabilistic, balance, dynamic and combined — were identified and described. The features, advantages and disadvantages of different types of migration process models were considered.

Proof of the connection between the Backman model with degenerate cost functions and the model of stable dynamics
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 2, pp. 335-342Since 1950s the field of city transport modelling has progressed rapidly. The first equilibrium distribution models of traffic flow appeared. The most popular model (which is still being widely used) was the Beckmann model, based on the two Wardrop principles. The core of the model could be briefly described as the search for the Nash equilibrium in a population demand game, in which losses of agents (drivers) are calculated based on the chosen path and demands of this path with correspondences being fixed. The demands (costs) of a path are calculated as the sum of the demands of different path segments (graph edges), that are included in the path. The costs of an edge (edge travel time) are determined by the amount of traffic on this edge (more traffic means larger travel time). The flow on a graph edge is determined by the sum of flows over all paths passing through the given edge. Thus, the cost of traveling along a path is determined not only by the choice of the path, but also by the paths other drivers have chosen. Thus, it is a standard game theory task. The way cost functions are constructed allows us to narrow the search for equilibrium to solving an optimization problem (game is potential in this case). If the cost functions are monotone and non-decreasing, the optimization problem is convex. Actually, different assumptions about the cost functions form different models. The most popular model is based on the BPR cost function. Such functions are massively used in calculations of real cities. However, in the beginning of the XXI century, Yu. E. Nesterov and A. de Palma showed that Beckmann-type models have serious weak points. Those could be fixed using the stable dynamics model, as it was called by the authors. The search for equilibrium here could be also reduced to an optimization problem, moreover, the problem of linear programming. In 2013, A.V.Gasnikov discovered that the stable dynamics model can be obtained by a passage to the limit in the Beckmann model. However, it was made only for several practically important, but still special cases. Generally, the question if this passage to the limit is possible remains open. In this paper, we provide the justification of the possibility of the above-mentioned passage to the limit in the general case, when the cost function for traveling along the edge as a function of the flow along the edge degenerates into a function equal to fixed costs until the capacity is reached and it is equal to plus infinity when the capacity is exceeded.

Classifier size optimisation in segmentation of three-dimensional point images of wood vegetation
Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 4, pp. 665-675The advent of laser scanning technologies has revolutionized forestry. Their use made it possible to switch from studying woodlands using manual measurements to computer analysis of stereo point images called point clouds.
Automatic calculation of some tree parameters (such as trunk diameter) using a point cloud requires the removal of foliage points. To perform this operation, a preliminary segmentation of the stereo image into the “foliage” and “trunk” classes is required. The solution to this problem often involves the use of machine learning methods.
One of the most popular classifiers used for segmentation of stereo images of trees is a random forest. This classifier is quite demanding on the amount of memory. At the same time, the size of the machine learning model can be critical if it needs to be sent by wire, which is required, for example, when performing distributed learning. In this paper, the goal is to find a classifier that would be less demanding in terms of memory, but at the same time would have comparable segmentation accuracy. The search is performed among classifiers such as logistic regression, naive Bayes classifier, and decision tree. In addition, a method for segmentation refinement performed by a decision tree using logistic regression is being investigated.
The experiments were conducted on data from the collection of the University of Heidelberg. The collection contains hand-marked stereo images of trees of various species, both coniferous and deciduous, typical of the forests of Central Europe.
It has been shown that classification using a decision tree, adjusted using logistic regression, is able to produce a result that is only slightly inferior to the result of a random forest in accuracy, while spending less time and RAM. The difference in balanced accuracy is no more than one percent on all the clouds considered, while the total size and inference time of the decision tree and logistic regression classifiers is an order of magnitude smaller than of the random forest classifier.

Signal and noise calculation at Rician data analysis by means of combining maximum likelihood technique and method of moments
Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 4, pp. 511-523Views (last year): 11.The paper develops a new mathematical method of the joint signal and noise calculation at the Rice statistical distribution based on combing the maximum likelihood method and the method of moments. The calculation of the sough-for values of signal and noise is implemented by processing the sampled measurements of the analyzed Rician signal’s amplitude. The explicit equations’ system has been obtained for required signal and noise parameters and the results of its numerical solution are provided confirming the efficiency of the proposed technique. It has been shown that solving the two-parameter task by means of the proposed technique does not lead to the increase of the volume of demanded calculative resources if compared with solving the task in one-parameter approximation. An analytical solution of the task has been obtained for the particular case of small value of the signal-to-noise ratio. The paper presents the investigation of the dependence of the sought for parameters estimation accuracy and dispersion on the quantity of measurements in experimental sample. According to the results of numerical experiments, the dispersion values of the estimated sought-for signal and noise parameters calculated by means of the proposed technique change in inverse proportion to the quantity of measurements in a sample. There has been implemented a comparison of the accuracy of the soughtfor Rician parameters’ estimation by means of the proposed technique and by earlier developed version of the method of moments. The problem having been considered in the paper is meaningful for the purposes of Rician data processing, in particular, at the systems of magnetic-resonance visualization, in devices of ultrasonic visualization, at optical signals’ analysis in range-measuring systems, at radar signals’ analysis, as well as at solving many other scientific and applied tasks that are adequately described by the Rice statistical model.

Modeling of the supply–demand imbalance in engineering labor market
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 6, pp. 1249-1273Nowadays the situation of supply-demand imbalances in the professionals’ labor markets causes human capital losses as far as hampers scientific and innovation development. In Russia, supply-demand imbalances in the engineering labor market are associated with deindustrialization processes and manufacturing decline, resulted in a negative public perception of the engineering profession and high rates of graduates not working within the specialty or changing their occupation.
For analysis of the supply-demand imbalances in the engineering labor market, we elaborated a macroeconomic model. The model consists of 14 blocks, including blocks for demand and supply for engineers and technicians, along with the blocks for macroeconomic indicators as industry and service sector output, capital investment. Using this model, we forecasted the perspective supply-demand imbalances in the engineering labor market in a short-term period and examined the parameters of getting supply-demand balance in the medium-term perspective.
The results obtained show that situation of more balanced supply and demand for engineering labor is possible if there is simultaneous increase in the share of investments in fixed assets of manufacturing and relative wages in industry, besides getting to balance is facilitated by a decrease of the share of graduates not working by specialty. It is worth noting that a decrease in the share of graduates not working by specialty may be affected whether by the growth of relative wages in industry and number of vacancies or by the implementation of measures aimed at improving the working conditions of the engineering workforce and increasing the attractiveness of the profession. To summarize, in the case of the simplest scenario, not considering additional measures of working conditions improvement and increasing the attractiveness of the profession, the conditions of supply-demand balance achievement implies slightly lower growth rates of investment in industry than required in scenarios that involve increasing the share of engineers and technicians working in their specialty after graduation. The latter case, where a gradual decrease in the proportion of those who do not work in engineering specialty is expected, requires, probably, higher investment costs for attracting specialists and creating new jobs, as well as additional measures to strengthen the attractiveness of the engineering profession.

An Algorithm for Simulating the Banking Network System and Its Application for Analyzing Macroprudential Policy
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 6, pp. 1275-1289Modeling banking systems using a network approach has received growing attention in recent years. One of the notable models is that developed by Iori et al, who proposed a banking system model for analyzing systemic risks in interbank networks. The model is built based on the simple dynamics of several bank balance sheet variables such as deposit, equity, loan, liquid asset, and interbank lending (or borrowing) in the form of difference equations. Each bank faces random shocks in deposits and loans. The balance sheet is updated at the beginning or end of each period. In the model, banks are grouped into either potential lenders or borrowers. The potential borrowers are those that have lack of liquidity and the potential lenders are those which have excess liquids after dividend payment and channeling new investment. The borrowers and the lenders are connected through the interbank market. Those borrowers have some percentage of linkage to random potential lenders for borrowing funds to maintain their safety net of the liquidity. If the demand for borrowing funds can meet the supply of excess liquids, then the borrower bank survives. If not, they are deemed to be in default and will be removed from the banking system. However, in their paper, most part of the interbank borrowing-lending mechanism is described qualitatively rather than by detailed mathematical or computational analysis. Therefore, in this paper, we enhance the mathematical parts of borrowing-lending in the interbank market and present an algorithm for simulating the model. We also perform some simulations to analyze the effects of the model’s parameters on banking stability using the number of surviving banks as the measure. We apply this technique to analyze the effects of a macroprudential policy called loan-to-deposit ratio based reserve requirement for banking stability.

Modeling the impact of sanctions and import substitution on market performance
Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 2, pp. 365-380The article considers an approach to modeling the impact of sanctions and import substitution on the performance of high-tech product markets based on the use of control theory methods (operational calculus, z-transform). The model under consideration assumes that an equipment manufacturer supplies unique high-tech equipment to a high-tech product (HP) manufacturer that dominates the equipment consumer market. The HP manufacturer, fearing disruption of equipment supplies due to the introduction of all kinds of restrictions and sanctions, invests in the development of import-substituting equipment production in a third company, which can also find application in the external market, at the expense of deductions from its profits. The influence of the following factors and actions on the performance of the conditional market is analyzed: 1) the degree of inertia of the development and production development processes in the company; 2) the share of equipment of the import-substituting company supplied to the HP manufacturer; 3) sanctions (general and selective) on the supply of equipment to the company-manufacturer of the import substitution, as well as blocking the import substitution process in the third company by the first company.
The calculations show that the acceleration of the equipment development and production processes leads to a faster decrease in the production volumes of the first company. At the same time, an increase in price is observed, which is associated with a change in the parameters of the inverse demand function.
An increase in the share of equipment of the import-substituting company consumed by the second company can lead to a sharp increase in production volumes in the second and third companies, stabilization of production volumes in the first company and an increase in price.
The introduction of sanctions leads to a decrease in the production volumes and income of all companies relative to the baseline version. A significant change in price also occurs. However, due to the inertia of the equipment production processes in the example under consideration, a significant change in production volumes in the aggregate of companies occurs with a significant lag. This is especially characteristic of the third company, in which a noticeable deviation from the baseline version begins after 20 years. The blocking by the first equipment manufacturing company of investments in the development of import substitution in the third company ensures a relatively small gain for the first company in production volumes and NPV although allows to raise her market share.
