Simulation of rail vehicles ride in Simpack Rail on the curved track
Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 2, pp. 249-263Views (last year): 20.The paper studies the determination for one of the dynamic quality parameter (PDK) of railway vehicles — car body lateral acceleration — by using of computer simulation system for railway vehicles dynamic Simpack Rail. This provide the complex simulation environment with variable velocity depending on the train schedule. The rail vehicle model of typical 1520 mm gauge fright locomotive section used for simulation has been verified by means of the chair “Electric multiple unit cars and locomotives” in the Russian University of Transport (RUT (MIIT)). Due to this homologation the questions of model creating and verification in preprocessor are excluded in this paper. The paper gives the detail description of cartographic track modeling in situation plane, heights plane and superelevation plane based on the real operating data. The statistic parameters (moments) for the rail related track excitation and used cartographic track data of the specified track section in this simulation are given as a numeric and graphical results of reading the prepared data files. The measurement of the car body residual lateral acceleration occur under consideration of the earth gravity acceleration part like the accelerometer measurement in the real world. Finally the desired quality parameter determined by simulation is compared with the same one given by a test drive. The calculation method in both cases is based on the middle value of the absolute maximums picked up within the nonstationary realizations of this parameter. Compared results confirm that this quality factor all the first depends on the velocity and track geometry properties. The simulation of the track in this application uses the strong conformity original track data of the test ride track section. The accepted simplification in the rail vehicle model of fright electric locomotive section (body properties related to the center of gravity, small displacements between the bodies) by keeping the geometric and force law characteristics of the force elements and constraints constant allow in Simpack Rail the simulation with necessary validity of system behavior (reactions).

Modeling of deformation processes in structure of flexible woven composites
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 3, pp. 547-557Flexible woven composites are classified as high-tech innovative materials. Due to the combination of various components of the filler and reinforcement elements, such materials are used in construction, in the defense industry, in shipbuilding and aircraft construction, etc. In the domestic literature, insufficient attention is paid to woven composites that change their geometric structure of the reinforcing layer during deformation. This paper presents an analysis of the previously proposed complex approach to modeling the behavior of flexible woven composites under static uniaxial tension for further generalization of the approach to biaxial tension. The work is aimed at qualitative and quantitative description of mechanical deformation processes occurring in the structure of the studied materials under tension, which include straightening the strands of the reinforcing layer and increasing the value of mutual pressure of the cross-lying reinforcement strands. At the beginning of the deformation process, the straightening of the threads and the increase in mutual pressure of the threads are most intense. With the increase in the level of load, the change of these parameters slows down. For example, the bending of the reinforcement strands goes into the Central tension, and the value of the load from the mutual pressure is no longer increased (tends to constant). To simulate the described processes, the basic geometrical and mechanical parameters of the material affecting the process of forming are introduced, the necessary terminology and description of the characteristics are given. Due to the high geometric nonlinearity of the all processes described in the increments, as in the initial load values there is a significant deformation of the reinforcing layer. For the quantitative and qualitative description of mechanical deformation processes occurring in the reinforcing layer, analytical dependences are derived to determine the increment of the angle of straightening of reinforcement filaments and the load caused by the mutual pressure of the cross-lying filaments at each step of the load increment. For testing of obtained dependencies shows an example of their application for flexible woven composites brands VP4126, VP6131 and VP6545. The simulation results confirmed the assumptions about the processes of straightening the threads and slowing the increase in mutual pressure of the threads. The results and dependences presented in this paper are directly related to the further generalization of the previously proposed analytical models for biaxial tension, since stretching in two directions will significantly reduce the straightening of the threads and increase the amount of mutual pressure under similar loads.

Approaches to creating precise geometric models of steel wire ropes in the Gmsh environment using the OpenCascade Core Technology engine
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 6, pp. 1399-1415A review of the problems of preparing accurate geometric models of steel ropes based on mathematical models without significant simplifications, taking into account the intended purpose of the model, is carried out. Possible approaches to the generation of precise geometric models of steel ropes that have no fundamental limitations on their integration in computational domains and the subsequent construction of finite element models based on them are shown. A generalized parameterized geometric model of single and double twist ropes and its algorithmic implementation using the OpenCASCADE Core Technology geometric modeling kernel in the Gmsh environment (open source software) is considered. The problems of using generic tabular data from steel rope assortment standards as initial data for constructing geometric models are considered. Methods of preliminary verification of collisions of a geometric model based on the initial data of a geometric model are given. Post-verification methods based on Boolean operations over rope wire bodies are given to identify incorrect results of generating models of wire bodies with curvilinear side surfaces based on the algorithm of sequential hierarchical construction of individual wires of single strand and sequential copying of it. Various methods of the process of constructing geometric models of rope wires by extrusion are shown: through a sequence of generatrix with the formation of a body limited by curvilinear surfaces, through a sequence of generatrix with the formation of a body limited by linearly approximated surfaces, and extrusion of one generatrix along a single guideline. The computational complexity of the geometric model generation and the required volume of RAM for the two most universal methods of creating a body of wire are investigated. A method for estimating the value of the step of the arrangement of the generatrix of a single wire is shown, and the influence of its value on the computational complexity of the procedure of wire construction is investigated. Recommendations are given for choosing the value of the radial gap between the layers of wires. An algorithmic implementation of the method for searching for collisions of a geometric model of a steel rope in a non-interactive mode is shown. Approaches to the formation of procedures for processing collisions are proposed. Approaches presented in the article can be implemented in the form of software modules for execution in the Gmsh environment, as well as for another environment using the OpenCascade Core Technology geometric modeling kernel. Such modules allow automation of the construction of accurate geometric models of steel ropes in any configuration without fundamental restrictions on subsequent use, both stand-alone and in the form of objects (primitives) suitable for integration in a third-party model.

Numerical simulation of converging spherical shock waves with symmetry violation
Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 1, pp. 59-71The study of the development of π-periodic perturbations of a converging spherical shock wave leading to cumulation limitation is performed. The study is based on 3D hydrodynamic calculations with the Carnahan – Starling equation of state for hard sphere fluid. The method of solving the Euler equations on moving (compressing) grids allows one to trace the evolution of the converging shock wave front with high accuracy in a wide range of its radius. The compression rate of the computational grid is adapted to the motion of the shock wave front, while the motion of the boundaries of the computational domain satisfy the condition of its supersonic velocity relative to the medium. This leads to the fact that the solution is determined only by the initial data at the grid compression stage. The second order TVD scheme is used to reconstruct the vector of conservative variables at the boundaries of the computational cells in combination with the Rusanov scheme for calculating the numerical vector of flows. The choice is due to a strong tendency for the manifestation of carbuncle-type numerical instability in the calculations, which is known for other classes of flows. In the three-dimensional case of the observed force, the carbuncle effect was obtained for the first time, which is explained by the specific nature of the flow: the concavity of the shock wave front in the direction of motion, the unlimited (in the symmetric case) growth of the Mach number, and the stationarity of the front on the computational grid. The applied numerical method made it possible to study the detailed flow pattern on the scale of cumulation termination, which is impossible within the framework of the Whitham method of geometric shock wave dynamics, which was previously used to calculate converging shock waves. The study showed that the limitation of cumulation is associated with the transition from the Mach interaction of converging shock wave segments to a regular one due to the progressive increase in the ratio of the azimuthal velocity at the shock wave front to the radial velocity with a decrease in its radius. It was found that this ratio is represented as a product of a limited oscillating function of the radius and a power function of the radius with an exponent depending on the initial packing density in the hard sphere model. It is shown that increasing the packing density parameter in the hard sphere model leads to a significant increase in the pressures achieved in a shock wave with broken symmetry. For the first time in the calculation, it is shown that at the scale of cumulation termination, the flow is accompanied by the formation of high-energy vortices, which involve the substance that has undergone the greatest shock-wave compression. Influencing heat and mass transfer in the region of greatest compression, this circumstance is important for current practical applications of converging shock waves for the purpose of initiating reactions (detonation, phase transitions, controlled thermonuclear fusion).

Combination of different simulation techniques in the complex model of photosynthetic membrane
Computer Research and Modeling, 2013, v. 5, no. 1, pp. 65-81Complex geometric organization of subcellular structures such as photosynthetic or mitochondrial membranes determines mechanism of electron and proton transfer processes. We propose new approach in modeling processes, where geometric shape of membranes is accurately taken into account. Different stages of charge transfer process are simulated using different approaches, which are integrated into a combined model. We implemented this model as software which utilizes parallel computations on high-performance clusters and GPUs for better performance.

Converting three-dimensional computer geometric models for optimization of simulated devices’ parameters

Citations: 16 (RSCI).This work focuses on the application of a method of construction and conversion of three-dimensional computer models for optimization of geometric parameters of simulated devices. The method is used in design of complex technical devices for control system components of an exhaust gas recirculation vehicle – electric EGR valve with magnetic and electric motor. Three-dimensional geometric computer models were created in KOMPAS-3D environment and converted to Maxwell-2D. In Maxwell-2D environment transient electromagnetic processes for further optimization of parameters of therecirculation system devicewere calculated using a criterion of reducing power loss of the automobile engine.

Optimization of a hull form for decrease ship resistance to movement

Citations: 1 (RSCI).Optimization of hull lines for the minimum resistance to movement is a problem of current interest in ship hydrodynamics. In practice, lines design is still to some extent an art. The usual approaches to decrease the ship resistance are based on the model experiment and/or CFD simulation, following the trial and error method. The paper presents a new method of in-detail hull form design based on the wave-based optimization approach. The method provides systematic variation of the hull geometrical form, which corresponds to alteration of longitudinal distribution of the hull volume, while its vertical volume distribution is fixed or highly controlled. It’s well known from the theoretical studies that the vertical distribution can't be optimized by condition of minimum wave resistance, thus it can be neglected for the optimization procedures. The method efficiency was investigated by application to the foreship of KCS, the well-known test object from the workshop Gothenburg-2000. The variations of the longitudinal distribution of the volume were set on the sectional area curve as finite volume increments and then transferred to the lines plan with the help of special frame transformation methods. The CFD towing simulations were carried out for the initial hull form and the six modified variants. According to the simulation results, examined modifications caused the resistance increments in the range 1.3–6.5 %. Optimization process was underpinned with the respective data analysis based on the new hypothesis, according to which, the resistance increments caused by separate longitudinal segments of hull form meet the principle of superposition. The achieved results, which are presented as the optimum distribution of volume present in the optimized designed hull form, which shows the interesting characteristics that its resistance has decrease by 8.9 % in respect to initial KCS hull form. Visualization of the wave patterns showed an attenuation of the transversal wave components, and the intensification of the diverging wave components.

Parallel implementation of numerical algorithm of solving coupled internal ballistics modelling problem for solid rocket motors
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 1, pp. 47-65We present a physico-mathematical statement of coupled geometrical and gas dynamics problem of intrachamber processes simulation and calculation of main internal ballistics characteristics of solid rocket motors in axisymmetric approximation. Method and numerical algorithm of solving the problem are described in this paper. We track the propellant burning surface using the level set method. This method allows us to implicitly represent the surface on a fixed Cartesian grid as zero-level of some function. Two-dimensional gas-dynamics equations describe a flow of combustion products in a solid rocket motor. Due to inconsistency of domain boundaries and nodes of computational grid, presence of ghost points lying outside the computational domain is taken into account. For setting the values of flow parameters in ghost points, we use the inverse Lax – Wendroff procedure. We discretize spatial derivatives of level set and gas-dynamics equations with standard WENO schemes of fifth and third-order respectively and time derivatives using total variation diminishing Runge –Kutta methods. We parallelize the presented numerical algorithm using CUDA technology and further optimize it with regard to peculiarities of graphics processors architecture.
Created software package is used for calculating internal ballistics characteristics of nozzleless solid rocket motor during main firing phase. On the base of obtained numerical results, we discuss efficiency of parallelization using CUDA technology and applying considered optimizations. It has been shown that implemented parallelization technique leads to a significant acceleration in comparison with central processes. Distributions of key parameters of combustion products flow in different periods of time have been presented in this paper. We make a comparison of obtained results between quasione-dimensional approach and developed numerical technique.

Modeling of hydroelastic oscillations for a channel wall possessing a nonlinear elastic support
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 1, pp. 79-92The paper deals with the mathematical model formulation for studying the nonlinear hydro-elastic response of the narrow channel wall supported by a spring with cubic nonlinearity and interacting with a pulsating viscous liquid filling the channel. In contrast to the known approaches, within the framework of the proposed mathematical model, the inertial and dissipative properties of the viscous incompressible liquid and the restoring force nonlinearity of the supporting spring were simultaneously taken into account. The mathematical model was an equations system for the coupled plane hydroelasticity problem, including the motion equations of a viscous incompressible liquid, with the corresponding boundary conditions, and the channel wall motion equation as a single-degree-of-freedom model with a cubic nonlinear restoring force. Initially, the viscous liquid dynamics was investigated within the framework of the hydrodynamic lubrication theory, i. e. without taking into account the liquid motion inertia. At the next stage, the iteration method was used to take into account the motion inertia of the viscous liquid. The distribution laws of the hydrodynamic parameters for the viscous liquid in the channel were found which made it possible to determine its reaction acting on the channel wall. As a result, it was shown that the original hydroelasticity problem is reduced to a single nonlinear equation that coincides with the Duffing equation. In this equation, the damping coefficient is determined by the liquid physical properties and the channel geometric dimensions, and taking into account the liquid motion inertia lead to the appearance of an added mass. The nonlinear equation study for hydroelastic oscillations was carried out by the harmonic balance method for the main frequency of viscous liquid pulsations. As a result, the primary steady-state hydroelastic response for the channel wall supported by a spring with softening or hardening cubic nonlinearity was found. Numerical modeling of the channel wall hydroelastic response showed the possibility of a jumping change in the amplitudes of channel wall oscillations, and also made it possible to assess the effect of the liquid motion inertia on the frequency range in which these amplitude jumps are observed.

Analysis of the dispersion characteristics of metallic photonic crystals by the plane-wave expansion method
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 5, pp. 1059-1068A method for studying the dispersion characteristics of photonic crystals — media with a dielectric constant that varies periodically in space — is considered. The method is based on the representation of the wave functions and permittivity of a periodic medium in the form of Fourier series and their subsequent substitution into the wave equation, which leads to the formulation of the dispersion equation. Using the latter, for each value of the wave vector it is possible determined a set of eigen frequencies. Each of eigen frequency forms a separate dispersion curve as a continuous function of the wave number. The Fourier expansion coefficients of the permittivity, which depend on the vectors of the reciprocal lattice of the photonic crystal, are determined on the basis of data on the geometric characteristics of the elements that form the crystal, their electrophysical properties and the density of the crystal. The solution of the dispersion equation found makes it possible to obtain complete information about the number of modes propagating in a periodic structure at different frequencies, and about the possibility of forming band gaps, i.e. frequency ranges within which wave propagation through a photonic crystal is impossible. The focus of this work is on the application of this method to the analysis of the dispersion properties of metallic photonic crystals. The difficulties that arise in this case due to the presence of intrinsic dispersion properties of the metals that form the elements of the crystal are overcome by an analytical description of their permittivity based on the model of free electrons. As a result, a dispersion equation is formulated, the numerical solution of which is easily algorithmized. That makes possible to determine the dispersion characteristics of metallic photonic crystals with arbitrary parameters. Obtained by this method the results of calculation of dispersion diagrams, which characterize two-dimensional metal photonic crystals, are compared with experimental data and numerical results obtained using the method of self-consistent equations. Their good agreement is demonstrated.
