Numerical modeling of the Kolmogorov flow in a viscous media, forced by the static force periodic in space
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 4, pp. 741-753

The main feature of a two-dimensional turbulent flow, constantly excited by an external force, is the appearance of an inverse energy cascade. Due to nonlinear effects, the spatial scale of the vortices created by the external force increases until the growth is stopped by the size of the cell. In the latter case, energy is accumulated at these dimensions. Under certain conditions, accumulation leads to the appearance of a system of coherent vortices. The observed vortices are of the order of the box size and, on average, are isotropic. Numerical simulation is an effective way to study such the processes. Of particular interest is the problem of studying the viscous fluid turbulence in a square cell under excitation by short-wave and long-wave static external forces. Numerical modeling was carried out with a weakly compressible fluid in a two-dimensional square cell with zero boundary conditions. The work shows how the flow characteristics are influenced by the spatial frequency of the external force and the magnitude of the viscosity of the fluid itself. An increase in the spatial frequency of the external force leads to stabilization and laminarization of the flow. At the same time, with an increased spatial frequency of the external force, a decrease in viscosity leads to the resumption of the mechanism of energy transfer along the inverse cascade due to a shift in the energy dissipation region to a region of smaller scales compared to the pump scale.

Numerical simulation of converging spherical shock waves with symmetry violation
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 1, pp. 59-71

The study of the development of π-periodic perturbations of a converging spherical shock wave leading to cumulation limitation is performed. The study is based on 3D hydrodynamic calculations with the Carnahan – Starling equation of state for hard sphere fluid. The method of solving the Euler equations on moving (compressing) grids allows one to trace the evolution of the converging shock wave front with high accuracy in a wide range of its radius. The compression rate of the computational grid is adapted to the motion of the shock wave front, while the motion of the boundaries of the computational domain satisfy the condition of its supersonic velocity relative to the medium. This leads to the fact that the solution is determined only by the initial data at the grid compression stage. The second order TVD scheme is used to reconstruct the vector of conservative variables at the boundaries of the computational cells in combination with the Rusanov scheme for calculating the numerical vector of flows. The choice is due to a strong tendency for the manifestation of carbuncle-type numerical instability in the calculations, which is known for other classes of flows. In the three-dimensional case of the observed force, the carbuncle effect was obtained for the first time, which is explained by the specific nature of the flow: the concavity of the shock wave front in the direction of motion, the unlimited (in the symmetric case) growth of the Mach number, and the stationarity of the front on the computational grid. The applied numerical method made it possible to study the detailed flow pattern on the scale of cumulation termination, which is impossible within the framework of the Whitham method of geometric shock wave dynamics, which was previously used to calculate converging shock waves. The study showed that the limitation of cumulation is associated with the transition from the Mach interaction of converging shock wave segments to a regular one due to the progressive increase in the ratio of the azimuthal velocity at the shock wave front to the radial velocity with a decrease in its radius. It was found that this ratio is represented as a product of a limited oscillating function of the radius and a power function of the radius with an exponent depending on the initial packing density in the hard sphere model. It is shown that increasing the packing density parameter in the hard sphere model leads to a significant increase in the pressures achieved in a shock wave with broken symmetry. For the first time in the calculation, it is shown that at the scale of cumulation termination, the flow is accompanied by the formation of high-energy vortices, which involve the substance that has undergone the greatest shock-wave compression. Influencing heat and mass transfer in the region of greatest compression, this circumstance is important for current practical applications of converging shock waves for the purpose of initiating reactions (detonation, phase transitions, controlled thermonuclear fusion).

Numerical study of high-speed mixing layers based on a two-fluid turbulence model
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 5, pp. 1125-1142

This work is devoted to the numerical study of high-speed mixing layers of compressible flows. The problem under consideration has a wide range of applications in practical tasks and, despite its apparent simplicity, is quite complex in terms of modeling. Because in the mixing layer, as a result of the instability of the tangential discontinuity of velocities, the flow passes from laminar flow to turbulent mode. Therefore, the obtained numerical results of the considered problem strongly depend on the adequacy of the used turbulence models. In the presented work, this problem is studied based on the two-fluid approach to the problem of turbulence. This approach has arisen relatively recently and is developing quite rapidly. The main advantage of the two-fluid approach is that it leads to a closed system of equations, when, as is known, the long-standing Reynolds approach leads to an open system of equations. The paper presents the essence of the two-fluid approach for modeling a turbulent compressible medium and the methodology for numerical implementation of the proposed model. To obtain a stationary solution, the relaxation method and Prandtl boundary layer theory were applied, resulting in a simplified system of equations. In the considered problem, high-speed flows are mixed. Therefore, it is also necessary to model heat transfer, and the pressure cannot be considered constant, as is done for incompressible flows. In the numerical implementation, the convective terms in the hydrodynamic equations were approximated by the upwind scheme with the second order of accuracy in explicit form, and the diffusion terms in the right-hand sides of the equations were approximated by the central difference in implicit form. The sweep method was used to implement the obtained equations. The SIMPLE method was used to correct the velocity through the pressure. The paper investigates a two-liquid turbulence model with different initial flow turbulence intensities. The obtained numerical results showed that good agreement with the known experimental data is observed at the inlet turbulence intensity of 0.1<I<1%. Data from known experiments, as well as the results of the kkL+J and LES models, are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed turbulence model. It is demonstrated that the two-liquid model is as accurate as known modern models and more efficient in terms of computing resources.

Numerical analyses of singularity in the integral equation of theory of liquids in the RISM approximation
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2010, v. 2, no. 1, pp. 51-62

An approach to evaluation of a parametric portrait of integral equations of the theory of liquids in the RISM approximation was proposed. To obtain all associated solutions the continuation method was used. The equations reduced to a two-centered molecule model for symmetry reasons were deduced for molecular liquids. For molecular liquids, some equations were obtained which could be reduced, for symmetry reasons, to a two-center molecular model. To avoid critical points we changed the dependence of RISM-equations on reverse compressibility. The suggested method was used to perform numerical computations of methane reverse compressibility isotherms with three closures. No bifurcation of solutions was observed in the case of the partially linearized hypernetted chain closure. For other closures bifurcations of solutions were obtained and the model behavior nontypical for simple liquids was observed. In the case of Percus-Yevick closure nonphysical solutions were obtained at low temperature and density. Additional solution branch with a kink in the bifurcation point was obtained in the case of hypernetted chain closure at temperature above the critical point.

Modeling of anisotropic strength using scalar damage parameter
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2014, v. 6, no. 6, pp. 937-942

The paper discusses the possibility of modeling the strength anisotropy of layered elastic medium using a scalar damage parameter. Thermodynamically consistent constitutive equations are formulated. Using SIMULIA / Abaqus we numerically simulated the stretching and compression of the samples. The results of calculation using the proposed model are compared with the known experimental data from the literature and the predictions of traditional models.

Estimation of natural frequencies of pure bending vibrations of composite nonlinearly elastic beams and circular plates
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 6, pp. 945-953

In the paper, it is represented a linearization method for the stress-strain curves of nonlinearly deformable beams and circular plates in order to generalize the pure bending vibration equations. It is considered composite, on average isotropic prismatic beams of a constant rectangular cross-section and circular plates of a constant thickness made of nonlinearly elastic materials. The technique consists in determining the approximate Young’s moduli from the initial stress-strain state of beam and plate subjected to the action of the bending moment.

The paper proposes two criteria for linearization: the equality of the specific potential energy of deformation and the minimization of the standard deviation in the state equation approximation. The method allows obtaining in the closed form the estimated value of the natural frequencies of layered and structurally heterogeneous, on average isotropic nonlinearly elastic beams and circular plates. This makes it possible to significantly reduce the resources in the vibration analysis and modeling of these structural elements. In addition, the paper shows that the proposed linearization criteria allow to estimate the natural frequencies with the same accuracy.

Since in the general case even isotropic materials exhibit different resistance to tension and compression, it is considered the piecewise-linear Prandtl’s diagrams with proportionality limits and tangential Young’s moduli that differ under tension and compression as the stress-strain curves of the composite material components. As parameters of the stress-strain curve, it is considered the effective Voigt’s characteristics (under the hypothesis of strain homogeneity) for a longitudinally layered material structure; the effective Reuss’ characteristics (under the hypothesis of strain homogeneity) for a transversely layered beam and an axially laminated plate. In addition, the effective Young’s moduli and the proportionality limits, obtained by the author’s homogenization method, are given for a structurally heterogeneous, on average isotropic material. As an example, it is calculated the natural frequencies of two-phase beams depending on the component concentrations.

High-Reynolds number calculations of turbulent heat transfer in FlowVision software
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 4, pp. 461-481

This work presents the model of heat wall functions FlowVision (WFFV), which allows simulation of nonisothermal flows of fluid and gas near solid surfaces on relatively coarse grids with use of turbulence models. The work follows the research on the development of wall functions applicable in wide range of the values of quantity y+. Model WFFV assumes smooth profiles of the tangential component of velocity, turbulent viscosity, temperature, and turbulent heat conductivity near a solid surface. Possibility of using a simple algebraic model for calculation of variable turbulent Prandtl number is investigated in this study (the turbulent Prandtl number enters model WFFV as parameter). The results are satisfactory. The details of implementation of model WFFV in the FlowVision software are explained. In particular, the boundary condition for the energy equation used in high-Reynolds number calculations of non-isothermal flows is considered. The boundary condition is deduced for the energy equation written via thermodynamic enthalpy and via full enthalpy. The capability of the model is demonstrated on two test problems: flow of incompressible fluid past a plate and supersonic flow of gas past a plate (M = 3).

Analysis of literature shows that there exists essential ambiguity in experimental data and, as a consequence, in empirical correlations for the Stanton number (that being a dimensionless heat flux). The calculations suggest that the default values of the model parameters, automatically specified in the program, allow calculations of heat fluxes at extended solid surfaces with engineering accuracy. At the same time, it is obvious that one cannot invent universal wall functions. For this reason, the controls of model WFFV are made accessible from the FlowVision interface. When it is necessary, a user can tune the model for simulation of the required type of flow.

The proposed model of wall functions is compatible with all the turbulence models implemented in the FlowVision software: the algebraic model of Smagorinsky, the Spalart-Allmaras model, the SST kω model, the standard kε model, the kε model of Abe, Kondoh, Nagano, the quadratic kε model, and kε model FlowVision.

Review of algorithmic solutions for deployment of neural networks on lite devices
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 7, pp. 1601-1619

In today’s technology-driven world, lite devices like Internet of Things (IoT) devices and microcontrollers (MCUs) are becoming increasingly common. These devices are more energyefficient and affordable, often with reduced features compared to the standard versions such as very limited memory and processing power for typical machine learning models. However, modern machine learning models can have millions of parameters, resulting in a large memory footprint. This complexity not only makes it difficult to deploy these large models on resource constrained devices but also increases the risk of latency and inefficiency in processing, which is crucial in some cases where real-time responses are required such as autonomous driving and medical diagnostics. In recent years, neural networks have seen significant advancements in model optimization techniques that help deployment and inference on these small devices. This narrative review offers a thorough examination of the progression and latest developments in neural network optimization, focusing on key areas such as quantization, pruning, knowledge distillation, and neural architecture search. It examines how these algorithmic solutions have progressed and how new approaches have improved upon the existing techniques making neural networks more efficient. This review is designed for machine learning researchers, practitioners, and engineers who may be unfamiliar with these methods but wish to explore the available techniques. It highlights ongoing research in optimizing networks for achieving better performance, lowering energy consumption, and enabling faster training times, all of which play an important role in the continued scalability of neural networks. Additionally, it identifies gaps in current research and provides a foundation for future studies, aiming to enhance the applicability and effectiveness of existing optimization strategies.

Computer analysis of the bone regeneration strength in a model system of osteosynthesis by the Ilizarov fixator with static loads
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2014, v. 6, no. 3, pp. 427-440

The adequate complexity three-dimensional finite element model of biomechanical system with space, shell and beam-type elements was built. The model includes the Ilizarov fixator and tibial bone’s simulator with the regenerating tissue at the fracture location. The proposed model allows us to specify the orthotropic elastic properties of tibial bone model in cortical and trabecular zones. It is also possible to change the basic geometrical and mechanical characteristics of biomechanical system, change the finite element mash density and define the different external loads, such as pressure on the bone and compression or distraction between the repositioned rings of Ilizarov device.

By using special APDL ANSYS program macros the mode of deformation was calculated in the fracture zone for various static loads on the simulator bone, for compression or distraction between the repositioned rings and for various mechanical properties during different stages of the bone regenerate formation (gelatinous, cartilaginous, trabecular and cortical bone remodeling). The obtained results allow us to estimate the permissible values of the external pressure on the bone and of the displacements of the Ilizarov fixator rings for different stages of the bone regeneration, based on the admittance criterion for the maximum of the stresses in the callus. The presented data can be used in a clinical condition for planning, realization and monitoring of the power modes for transosseous osteosynthesis with the external Ilizarov fixator.

Modeling of axisymmetric deformation processes with taking into account the metal microstructure
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2015, v. 7, no. 4, pp. 897-908

The article describes the state of the art computer simulation in the field of metal forming processes, the main problem points of traditional methods were identified. The method, that allows to predict the deformation distribution in the volume of deformable metal with taking into account of microstructure behavioral characteristics in deformation load conditions, was described. The method for optimizing computational resources of multiscale models by using statistical similar representative volume elements (SSRVE) was presented. The modeling methods were tested on the process of single pass drawing of round rod from steel grade 20. In a comparative analysis of macro and micro levels models differences in quantitative terms of the stress-strain state and their local distribution have been identified. Microlevel model also allowed to detect the compressive stresses and strains, which were absent at the macro level model. Applying the SSRVE concept repeatedly lowered the calculation time of the model while maintaining the overall accuracy.
