Modeling of gas mixture separation in a multistage micropump based on the solution of the Boltzmann equation
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 6, pp. 1417-1432The paper simulates a mixture of gases in a multi-stage micro-pump and evaluates its effectiveness at separating the components of the mixture. A device in the form of a long channel with a series of transverse plates is considered. A temperature difference between the sides of the plates induces a radiometric gas flow within the device, and the differences in masses of the gases lead to differences in flow velocities and to the separation of the mixture. Modeling is based on the numerical solution of the Boltzmann kinetic equation, for which a splitting scheme is used, i. e., the advection equation and the relaxation problem are solved separately in alternation. The calculation of the collision integral is performed using the conservative projection method. This method ensures the strict fulfillment of the laws of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy, as well as the important asymptotic property of the equality of the integral of the Maxwell function to zero. Explicit first-order and second-order TVD-schemes are used to solve the advection equation. The calculations were performed for a neon-argon mixture using a model of solid spheres with real molecular diameters and masses. Software has been developed to allow calculations on personal computers and cluster systems. The use of parallelization leads to faster computation and constant time per iteration for devices of different sizes, enabling the modeling of large particle systems. It was found that the value of mixture separation, i. e. the ratio of densities at the ends of the device linearly depends on the number of cascades in the device, which makes it possible to estimate separation for multicascade systems, computer modeling of which is impossible. Flows and distributions of gas inside the device during its operation were analyzed. It was demonstrated that devices of this kind with a sufficiently large number of plates are suitable for the separation of gas mixtures, given that they have no moving parts and are quite simple in manufacture and less subject to wear.

Modeling the thermal field of stationary symmetric bodies in rarefied low-temperature plasma
Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 1, pp. 73-91The work investigates the process of self-consistent relaxation of the region of disturbances created in a rarefied binary low-temperature plasma by a stationary charged ball or cylinder with an absorbing surface. A feature of such problems is their self-consistent kinetic nature, in which it is impossible to separate the processes of transfer in phase space and the formation of an electromagnetic field. A mathematical model is presented that makes it possible to describe and analyze the state of the gas, electric and thermal fields in the vicinity of the body. The multidimensionality of the kinetic formulation creates certain problems in the numerical solution, therefore a curvilinear system of nonholonomic coordinates was selected for the problem, which minimizes its phase space, which contributes to increasing the efficiency of numerical methods. For such coordinates, the form of the Vlasov kinetic equation has been justified and analyzed. To solve it, a variant of the large particle method with a constant form factor was used. The calculations used a moving grid that tracks the displacement of the distribution function carrier in the phase space, which further reduced the volume of the controlled region of the phase space. Key details of the model and numerical method are revealed. The model and the method are implemented as code in the Matlab language. Using the example of solving a problem for a ball, the presence of significant disequilibrium and anisotropy in the particle velocity distribution in the disturbed zone is shown. Based on the calculation results, pictures of the evolution of the structure of the particle distribution function, profiles of the main macroscopic characteristics of the gas — concentration, current, temperature and heat flow, and characteristics of the electric field in the disturbed region are presented. The mechanism of heating of attracted particles in the disturbed zone is established and some important features of the process of formation of heat flow are shown. The results obtained are well explainable from a physical point of view, which confirms the adequacy of the model and the correct operation of the software tool. The creation and testing of a basis for the development in the future of tools for solving more complex problems of modeling the behavior of ionized gases near charged bodies is noted.
The work will be useful to specialists in the field of mathematical modeling, heat and mass transfer processes, lowtemperature plasma physics, postgraduate students and senior students specializing in the indicated areas.

On the A.N. Kolmogorov hypotheses-based evaluation of the pulsation spectrum for a time sample of 3D velocity vector components
Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 2, pp. 289-313The Fourier transformation is the basic tool for evaluating the spectral characteristics of a turbulent flow. The Fourier transform (usually discrete) of the first power of the longitudinal or transverse component of the velocity vector pulsations allows estimation of the energy spectral density (ESD) or power spectral density (PSD). To estimate the ESD and PSD of a turbulent signal obtained from numerical simulation, an array of signal values with discretization in the time or spatial domain is generated. The reference distribution of the ESD spectrum (scaling law) within the wave number domain of the inertial subrange is derived from two hypotheses proposed by A.N. Kolmogorov and is characterized by the $−\frac{5}{3}$ law. The $-\frac{5}{3}$ law is also used in most references to estimate the ESD distribution in the frequency domain. The distribution of the power spectrum PSD is derived from the distribution of the energy spectrum ESD by normalizing to the signal scanning time. An alternative energy spectral characteristic (ESS) of velocity fluctuations can be determined by the Fourier transform of the square of the velocity fluctuations. In the wave numbers domain, the dimension of ESS in the spatial domain coincides with the dimension of A.N. Kolmogorov's $−\frac{5}{3}$ law. When considering a signal sampled in the time domain, a scaling law of $−2$ for ESS was previously obtained in the frequency domain. An alternative estimate of the Power Signal Spectrum (PSS) is discussed in this paper based on the Fourier transform of the third-order velocity pulsations. Based on the hypotheses proposed by A.N.Kolmogorov, it can be inferred that in the frequency domain, the scaling law of the PSS spectrum is characterized by the power of $−\frac{5}{2}$. Unsteady incompressible flow around a 3D cylindrical surface section at the Reynolds number of 3900 is considered as an application. The numerical simulation is performed using ANSYS Fluent commercial code and based on the Navier – Stokes equations. The spatio-temporal characteristics of the turbulent flow velocity vector are analyzed using the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). The Fourier transform is used to estimate the ESS and PSS of a time-sampled signal.

Mechanism of the laser-induced capillary effect revealed by numerical simulation
Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 3, pp. 643-657For the first time, numerical modeling has determined the mechanism of the initiated-by-cavitation rise of the liquid level in tubes and capillaries, known as the laser-induced optocapillary effect, as well as its analogues — the acoustocapillary and plasmocapillary effects. It is shown that the key condition for the occurrence of the liquid rise is the asymmetric collapse of a single relatively large cavitation bubble inside a vertically oriented tube or capillary. The proximity of boundaries (the tube wall, the fiber optic tip, and others) disrupts the spherical symmetry of the bubble during its collapse, leading to the appearance of a liquid flow that rolls up into a long-lived toroidal vortex ring. Due to viscous entrainment of the surrounding medium, the vortex generates a directed liquid flow upward and also ensures the suction of a new portion of liquid through the open lower end of the tube. The simulation results show that the characteristic lifetime of the toroidal vortex significantly exceeds the duration of the growth and collapse stages of the cavitation bubble that generated it. It is demonstrated that the rise of the liquid level in the tube does not begin at the moment of bubble expansion, but after its complete disappearance, and continues over a relatively long period due to the inertia of the vortex motion. This result is in complete agreement with experimental data, confirming the validity of the proposed mechanism.
The study investigated the practically significant configuration of the laser-induced optocapillary effect using an optical fiber. This configuration opens broad prospects for technical and medical applications, particularly in laser surgery. The investigated mechanism can be used to create cavitation pumps — effective tools for cleaning technical surfaces and wound surfaces, where the process of removing damaged tissue and foreign bodies due to thermal exposure will be accompanied by the removal of debris through the tube, significantly increasing the efficiency and safety of the procedure.
The obtained results represent the first consistent explanation for a class of cavitation-induced capillary phenomena and create a foundation for their controlled application in biomedical and microfluidic technologies.

Numerical solution of quasi-hydrodynamic equations on non-structured triangle mesh
Computer Research and Modeling, 2009, v. 1, no. 2, pp. 181-188Views (last year): 1.A new flow modeling method on unstructured grid was proposed. As a basis system this method used quasi-hydro-dynamic equations. The finite volume method vas used for solving these equations. The Delaunay triangulation was used for constructing mesh. This proposed method was tested in modeling of incompressible flow through a channel with complex profile. The acquired results showed that the proposed method could be used in flow modeling in unstructured grid.

Numerical analyses of singularity in the integral equation of theory of liquids in the RISM approximation
Computer Research and Modeling, 2010, v. 2, no. 1, pp. 51-62Views (last year): 4.An approach to evaluation of a parametric portrait of integral equations of the theory of liquids in the RISM approximation was proposed. To obtain all associated solutions the continuation method was used. The equations reduced to a two-centered molecule model for symmetry reasons were deduced for molecular liquids. For molecular liquids, some equations were obtained which could be reduced, for symmetry reasons, to a two-center molecular model. To avoid critical points we changed the dependence of RISM-equations on reverse compressibility. The suggested method was used to perform numerical computations of methane reverse compressibility isotherms with three closures. No bifurcation of solutions was observed in the case of the partially linearized hypernetted chain closure. For other closures bifurcations of solutions were obtained and the model behavior nontypical for simple liquids was observed. In the case of Percus-Yevick closure nonphysical solutions were obtained at low temperature and density. Additional solution branch with a kink in the bifurcation point was obtained in the case of hypernetted chain closure at temperature above the critical point.

Mathematical modeling of dinuclear systems in low energy nuclear reactions
Computer Research and Modeling, 2010, v. 2, no. 4, pp. 385-392Views (last year): 2.Numerical methods of obtaining collective and one-particle states were used for the quantum description of two-nuclear systems behavior at the initial stage of near-barrier heavy nuclei fusion. The collective exited states in such systems represent concordant oscillations of surfaces of spherical nuclei. The one-particle states of the external neutrons are similar to the states of valence electrons of diatomic molecules.

The invariance principle of La-Salle and mathematical models for the evolution of microbial populations
Computer Research and Modeling, 2011, v. 3, no. 2, pp. 177-190Views (last year): 8. Citations: 3 (RSCI).A mathematical model for the evolution of microbial populations during prolonged cultivation in a chemostat has been constructed. This model generalizes the sequence of the well-known mathematical models of the evolution, in which such factors of the genetic variability were taken into account as chromosomal mutations, mutations in plasmid genes, the horizontal gene transfer, the plasmid loss due to cellular division and others. Liapunov’s function for the generic model of evolution is constructed. The existence proof of bounded, positive invariant and globally attracting set in the state space of the generic mathematical model for the evolution is presented because of the application of La-Salle’s theorem. The analytic description of this set is given. Numerical methods for estimate of the number of limit sets, its location and following investigation in the mathematical models for evolution are discussed.

Efficient method of the transport equation calculation in 2D cylindrical and 3D hexagonal geometries for quasi-diffusion method
Computer Research and Modeling, 2011, v. 3, no. 3, pp. 279-286Citations: 4 (RSCI).Efficient method for numerical solving of the steady transport equation in x-y-z-geometry has been suggested. The equation is being solved on hexagonal mesh, reflecting real structure of the reactor active zone cross-section. Method of characteristics is used, that inherits all the outcomes from the two-dimensional r-z-geometry calculation. Two variants of the method of characteristics have been applied for solving the transport equation in a cell: method of short characteristics and its conservative modification. It has been confirmed that in three-dimensional geometry conservative method has advantage over pure characteristic and it produces highly accurate solution, especially for quasi-diffusion tensor components.

Computer Research and Modeling, 2012, v. 4, no. 2, pp. 315-324Views (last year): 1. Citations: 1 (RSCI).The computer code NINE (Newtonian Iteration for Nonlinear Equation) for numerical solution of the boundary problems for nonlinear differential equations on the basis of continuous analogue of the Newton method (CANM) is presented. Numerov’s finite-difference appproximation is applied to provide the fourth accuracy order with respect to the discretization stepsize. Algorithms of calculating the Newtonian iterative parameter are discussed. A convergence of iteration process in dependence on choice of the iteration parameter has been studied.
