Method for coronary blood flow velocity estimation based on angiographic images
Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 3, pp. 715-735In modern cardiology, accurate assessment of the functional significance of coronary artery stenoses is a critical factor for selecting treatment strategies and making informed clinical decisions. This paper presents an automated algorithm for processing dynamic X-ray angiographic image sequences aimed at estimating blood flow velocity. This parameter serves as the basis for determining the Quantitative Flow Ratio (QFR), which acts as an effective noninvasive alternative to traditional invasive fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurements. The proposed methodology successfully overcomes classic challenges of angiographic analysis, such as vessel motion artifacts during the cardio-respiratory cycle, variable contrast opacification, and the geometric complexity of the vascular tree in two-dimensional projections.
The presented processing workflow includes several key stages. Initially, frame preprocessing is performed to suppress noise and filter out the anatomical background. Subsequently, segmentation is implemented using a Sato filter and Otsu thresholding, followed by skeletonization to extract vessel centerlines. Particular attention is paid to the algorithm for automated identification of bifurcation points and the filtration of artifactual intersections caused by vessel overlapping. To ensure data continuity, a temporal tracking method for the target segment based on template correlation is applied, which is especially important during phases with low contrast agent concentration. The mathematical core of the algorithm is based on solving a 1D inverse problem for the advection-diffusion equation, allowing for the recovery of blood flow velocity from temporal intensity curves.
As part of the study, a detailed validation of the method was conducted by comparing automated calculation results with manual expert measurements across ten clinical datasets. The results confirm the robustness of the computational scheme within physiologically relevant ranges and its ability to significantly reduce inter-observer variability. The developed approach minimizes the need for physician intervention in the data processing stage, opening up prospects for creating real-time clinical decision support systems in the catheterization laboratory setting.

Automated morphological trait analysis of plants in early ontogeny for breeding applications using deep learning segmentation and graph-based analysis
Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 4, pp. 891-908We propose an approach for the reconstruction and quantitative phenotyping of plant morphological traits at early ontogenetic stages based on digital image analysis. The proposed algorithm combines deep learning and graph-based representations while incorporating biological principles of morphogenesis. This integration enables the transition from binary segmentation to the reconstruction of a topologically consistent plant structure with accurate separation of intersecting root systems in images containing multiple plants. At the first stage, binary masks of seeds, shoots, and root systems are generated using a U-Net convolutional neural network architecture. The resulting image is transformed into a graph model in which edges correspond to root and shoot segments, while vertices represent key morphological points, including branching and intersection nodes. A directed traversal algorithm initialized from the seed point, combined with watershed-based graph partitioning and a composite scoring function for primary axis selection, identifies individual plants as isolated subgraphs and accurately distinguishes the primary root, lateral roots, and shoot. The validity of the algorithm was confirmed through a multi-level validation procedure, including comparison of graph reconstruction results on segmented images and end-to-end evaluation of the complete computational pipeline on original images against existing software solutions and expert manual annotations. The proposed approach is robust to variability in root system morphology and image noise and provides high accuracy in morphological trait extraction. The results of this study can be applied in plant breeding programs.

Design, modeling, and control of a variable stiffness joint based on a torsional magnetic spring
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 5, pp. 1323-1347Industrial robots have made it possible for robotics to become a worldwide discipline both in economy and in science. However, their capabilities are limited, especially regarding contact tasks where it is required to regulate or at least limit contact forces. At one point, it was noticed that elasticity in the joint transmission, which was treated as a drawback previously, is actually helpful in this regard. This observation led to the introduction of elastic joint robots that are well-suited to contact tasks and cooperative behavior in particular, so they become more and more widespread nowadays. Many researchers try to implement such devices not with trivial series elastic actuators (SEA) but with more sophisticated variable stiffness actuators (VSA) that can regulate their own mechanical stiffness. All elastic actuators demonstrate shock robustness and safe interaction with external objects to some extent, but when stiffness may be varied, it provides additional benefits, e. g., in terms of energy efficiency and task adaptability. Here, we present a novel variable stiffness actuator with a magnetic coupler as an elastic element. Magnetic transmission is contactless and thus advantageous in terms of robustness to misalignment. In addition, the friction model of the transmission becomes less complex. It also has milder stiffness characteristic than typical mechanical nonlinear springs, moreover, the stiffness curve has a maximum after which it descends. Therefore, when this maximum torque is achieved, the coupler slips, and a new pair of poles defines the equilibrium position. As a result, the risk of damage is smaller for this design solution. The design of the joint is thoroughly described, along with its mathematical model. Finally, the control system is also proposed, and simulation tests confirm the design ideas.

Synchronization of circadian rhythms in the scale of a gene, a cell and a whole organism
Computer Research and Modeling, 2013, v. 5, no. 2, pp. 255-270Views (last year): 1. Citations: 8 (RSCI).In the paper three characteristic scales of a biological system are proposed: microscopic (gene's size), mesoscopic (cell’s size) and macroscopic level (organism’s size). For each case the approach to modeling of circadian rhythms is discussed on the base of a time-delay model. At gene’s scale the stochastic description has been used. The robustness of rhythms mechanism to the fluctuations has been demonstrated. At the mesoscopic scale we propose the deterministic description within the spatially extended model. It was found the effect of collective synchronization of rhythms in cells. Macroscopic effects have been studied within the discrete model describing the collective behaviour of large amount of cells. The problem of cross-linking of results obtained at different scales is discussed. The comparison with experimental data is given.

Microtubule protofilament bending characterization
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 2, pp. 435-443This work is devoted to the analysis of conformational changes in tubulin dimers and tetramers, in particular, the assessment of the bending of microtubule protofilaments. Three recently exploited approaches for estimating the bend of tubulin protofilaments are reviewed: (1) measurement of the angle between the vector passing through the H7 helices in $\alpha$ and $\beta$ tubulin monomers in the straight structure and the same vector in the curved structure of tubulin; (2) measurement of the angle between the vector, connecting the centers of mass of the subunit and the associated GTP nucleotide, and the vector, connecting the centers of mass of the same nucleotide and the adjacent tubulin subunit; (3) measurement of the three rotation angles of the bent tubulin subunit relative to the straight subunit. Quantitative estimates of the angles calculated at the intra- and inter-dimer interfaces of tubulin in published crystal structures, calculated in accordance with the three metrics, are presented. Intra-dimer angles of tubulin in one structure, measured by the method (3), as well as measurements by this method of the intra-dimer angles in different structures, were more similar, which indicates a lower sensitivity of the method to local changes in tubulin conformation and characterizes the method as more robust. Measuring the angle of curvature between H7-helices (method 1) produces somewhat underestimated values of the curvature per dimer. Method (2), while at first glance generating the bending angle values, consistent the with estimates of curved protofilaments from cryoelectron microscopy, significantly overestimates the angles in the straight structures. For the structures of tubulin tetramers in complex with the stathmin protein, the bending angles calculated with all three metrics varied quite significantly for the first and second dimers (up to 20% or more), which indicates the sensitivity of all metrics to slight variations in the conformation of tubulin dimers within these complexes. A detailed description of the procedures for measuring the bending of tubulin protofilaments, as well as identifying the advantages and disadvantages of various metrics, will increase the reproducibility and clarity of the analysis of tubulin structures in the future, as well as it will hopefully make it easier to compare the results obtained by various scientific groups.

Comparing the effectiveness of computer mass appraisal methods
Computer Research and Modeling, 2015, v. 7, no. 1, pp. 185-196Views (last year): 2.Location-based models — one of areas of CAMA (computer-assisted mass apriasal) building. When taking into account the location of the object using spatial autoregressive models structure of models (type of spatial autocorrelation, choice of “nearest neighbors”) cannot always be determined before its construction. Moreover, in practice there are situations where more efficient methods are taking into account different rates depending on the type of the object from its location. In this regard there are important issues in spatial methods area:
– fields of methods efficacy;
– sensitivity of the methods on the choice of the type of spatial model and on the selected number of nearest neighbors.
This article presents a methodology for assessing the effectiveness of computer evaluation of real estate objects. There are results of approbation on methods based on location information of the objects.

Changepoint detection in biometric data: retrospective nonparametric segmentation methods based on dynamic programming and sliding windows
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 5, pp. 1295-1321This paper is dedicated to the analysis of medical and biological data obtained through locomotor training and testing of astronauts conducted both on Earth and during spaceflight. These experiments can be described as the astronaut’s movement on a treadmill according to a predefined regimen in various speed modes. During these modes, not only the speed is recorded but also a range of parameters, including heart rate, ground reaction force, and others, are collected. In order to analyze the dynamics of the astronaut’s condition over an extended period, it is necessary to perform a qualitative segmentation of their movement modes to independently assess the target metrics. This task becomes particularly relevant in the development of an autonomous life support system for astronauts that operates without direct supervision from Earth. The segmentation of target data is complicated by the presence of various anomalies, such as deviations from the predefined regimen, arbitrary and varying duration of mode transitions, hardware failures, and other factors. The paper includes a detailed review of several contemporary retrospective (offline) nonparametric methods for detecting multiple changepoints, which refer to sudden changes in the properties of the observed time series occurring at unknown moments. Special attention is given to algorithms and statistical measures that determine the homogeneity of the data and methods for detecting change points. The paper considers approaches based on dynamic programming and sliding window methods. The second part of the paper focuses on the numerical modeling of these methods using characteristic examples of experimental data, including both “simple” and “complex” speed profiles of movement. The analysis conducted allowed us to identify the preferred methods, which will be further evaluated on the complete dataset. Preference is given to methods that ensure the closeness of the markup to a reference one, potentially allow the detection of both boundaries of transient processes, as well as are robust relative to internal parameters.

Kinetic modeling of radiation-induced DNA double-strand break repair incorporating an ultraslow component
Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 4, pp. 989-1003A kinetic model of radiation-induced DNA double-strand break repair with an ultraslow component of complex damage is proposed. The model was parameterized using experimental time courses of $\gamma$H2AX and pATM foci in human mesenchymal stem cells after exposure to $\gamma$-rays (60Co) and 14.1 MeV neutrons at a dose of 0.5 Gy. The standard two-component scheme reproduced the early response phase (0.5–6 h) but systematically underestimated the residual marker signal at 24 h, especially after neutron irradiation. Introducing an ultraslow component allowed both the early and late phases of the response to be described without fitting separate kinetic parameters for different radiation types. The differences between γ-irradiation and neutrons were introduced only through the distribution of damage between fractions, including fixed ultraslow fractions $\pi g = 0.15$ and $\pi n = 0.40$. Model comparison using $\chi^2$ and AIC, together with bootstrap analysis and local sensitivity assessment, supports the robustness of the conclusion that an ultraslow damage fraction is required to describe late post-radiation signaling.

Efficient and error-free information hiding in the hybrid domain of digital images using metaheuristic optimization
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 1, pp. 197-210Data hiding in digital images is a promising direction of cybersecurity. Digital steganography methods provide imperceptible transmission of secret data over an open communication channel. The information embedding efficiency depends on the embedding imperceptibility, capacity, and robustness. These quality criteria are mutually inverse, and the improvement of one indicator usually leads to the deterioration of the others. A balance between them can be achieved using metaheuristic optimization. Metaheuristics are a class of optimization algorithms that find an optimal, or close to an optimal solution for a variety of problems, including those that are difficult to formalize, by simulating various natural processes, for example, the evolution of species or the behavior of animals. In this study, we propose an approach to data hiding in the hybrid spatial-frequency domain of digital images based on metaheuristic optimization. Changing a block of image pixels according to some change matrix is considered as an embedding operation. We select the change matrix adaptively for each block using metaheuristic optimization algorithms. In this study, we compare the performance of three metaheuristics such as genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, and differential evolution to find the best change matrix. Experimental results showed that the proposed approach provides high imperceptibility of embedding, high capacity, and error-free extraction of embedded information. At the same time, storage of change matrices for each block is not required for further data extraction. This improves user experience and reduces the chance of an attacker discovering the steganographic attachment. Metaheuristics provided an increase in imperceptibility indicator, estimated by the PSNR metric, and the capacity of the previous algorithm for embedding information into the coefficients of the discrete cosine transform using the QIM method [Evsutin, Melman, Meshcheryakov, 2021] by 26.02% and 30.18%, respectively, for the genetic algorithm, 26.01% and 19.39% for particle swarm optimization, 27.30% and 28.73% for differential evolution.

A model for technology diffusion based on the “consumer – resource” equations
Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 4, pp. 1035-1052The author presents a new macroeconomic model designed to analyze and forecast technology diffusion processes in markets characterized by bounded capacity. The study addresses the major limitations of classical phenomenological models, such as the Bass and Gompertz frameworks, which suffer from a rigidly fixed trajectory asymmetry and lack explicit microeconomic foundations. To overcome these constraints, we employ an interdisciplinary approach that transfers the ecological concept of limited resource rationing from the Arditi–Ginzburg–Contois model into operations management theory. This framework integrates the Karmarkar clearing function with the Leontief–Liebig production function to establish a rigorous dynamic balance. By applying this integration, the author analytically derives an alternative technological innovation diffusion law that expresses time as an explicit function of the cumulative market volume. To identify parameters from empirical data, the study develops a robust numerical grid inversion algorithm that utilizes vector linear interpolation within the MATLAB computing environment. This approach avoids iterative root-finding errors and ensures high computational stability for the non-linear least squares optimization procedure. We test the empirical validity of the developed diffusion law using two distinct historical macroeconomic cases: the quarterly cumulative sales of the Apple iPod and the annual subscription data for the mobile broadband market in Germany. The resulting statistical metrics demonstrate that the proposed model provides superior approximation quality and mathematical advantages on high-tech market data due to its highly flexible asymmetry parameter. The fundamental scientific novelty of this research lies in the theoretical justification of the macroeconomic S-curve through the internal balance equations of an open chemostat-type system operating under a competitive vacuum. The proposed mathematical apparatus offers a practical tool for corporate management and regulatory agencies to plan market capacity and accurately forecast peak technological substitution rates.
