Variational principle for shape memory solids under variable external forces and temperatures
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 3, pp. 541-555The quasistatic deformation problem for shape memory alloys is reviewed within the phenomenological mechanics of solids without microphysics analysis. The phenomenological approach is based on comparison of two material deformation diagrams. The first diagram corresponds to the active proportional loading when the alloy behaves as an ideal elastoplastic material; the residual strain is observed after unloading. The second diagram is relevant to the case when the deformed sample is heated to a certain temperature for each alloy. The initial shape is restored: the reverse distortion matches deformations on the first diagram, except for the sign. Because the first step of distortion can be described with the variational principle, for which the existence of the generalized solutions is proved under arbitrary loading, it becomes clear how to explain the reverse distortion within the slightly modified theory of plasticity. The simply connected surface of loading needs to be replaced with the doubly connected one, and the variational principle needs to be updated with two laws of thermodynamics and the principle of orthogonality for thermodynamic forces and streams. In this case it is not difficult to prove the existence of solutions either. The successful application of the theory of plasticity under the constant temperature causes the need to obtain a similar result for a more general case of variable external forces and temperatures. The paper studies the ideal elastoplastic von Mises model at linear strain rates. Taking into account hardening and arbitrary loading surface does not cause any additional difficulties.
The extended variational principle of the Reissner type is defined. Together with the laws of thermal plasticity it enables to prove the existence of the generalized solutions for three-dimensional bodies made of shape memory materials. The main issue to resolve is a challenge to choose a functional space for the rates and deformations of the continuum points. The space of bounded deformation, which is the main instrument of the mathematical theory of plasticity, serves this purpose in the paper. The proving process shows that the choice of the functional spaces used in the paper is not the only one. The study of other possible problem settings for the extended variational principle and search for regularity of generalized solutions seem an interesting challenge for future research.

Modeling the thermal field of stationary symmetric bodies in rarefied low-temperature plasma
Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 1, pp. 73-91The work investigates the process of self-consistent relaxation of the region of disturbances created in a rarefied binary low-temperature plasma by a stationary charged ball or cylinder with an absorbing surface. A feature of such problems is their self-consistent kinetic nature, in which it is impossible to separate the processes of transfer in phase space and the formation of an electromagnetic field. A mathematical model is presented that makes it possible to describe and analyze the state of the gas, electric and thermal fields in the vicinity of the body. The multidimensionality of the kinetic formulation creates certain problems in the numerical solution, therefore a curvilinear system of nonholonomic coordinates was selected for the problem, which minimizes its phase space, which contributes to increasing the efficiency of numerical methods. For such coordinates, the form of the Vlasov kinetic equation has been justified and analyzed. To solve it, a variant of the large particle method with a constant form factor was used. The calculations used a moving grid that tracks the displacement of the distribution function carrier in the phase space, which further reduced the volume of the controlled region of the phase space. Key details of the model and numerical method are revealed. The model and the method are implemented as code in the Matlab language. Using the example of solving a problem for a ball, the presence of significant disequilibrium and anisotropy in the particle velocity distribution in the disturbed zone is shown. Based on the calculation results, pictures of the evolution of the structure of the particle distribution function, profiles of the main macroscopic characteristics of the gas — concentration, current, temperature and heat flow, and characteristics of the electric field in the disturbed region are presented. The mechanism of heating of attracted particles in the disturbed zone is established and some important features of the process of formation of heat flow are shown. The results obtained are well explainable from a physical point of view, which confirms the adequacy of the model and the correct operation of the software tool. The creation and testing of a basis for the development in the future of tools for solving more complex problems of modeling the behavior of ionized gases near charged bodies is noted.
The work will be useful to specialists in the field of mathematical modeling, heat and mass transfer processes, lowtemperature plasma physics, postgraduate students and senior students specializing in the indicated areas.

A mathematical model for estimating the zone of intense evaporation of gas condensate during emissions from shallow wells
Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 2, pp. 243-259Safe carrying out of emergency recovery operations at emergency offshore gas condensate wells is possible when taking into account the hazardous factors that prevent anti-fontanning measures. One of such factors is the gassiness of the operation zone due to the release from the water column of a large amount of light, as compared to air, natural gas, as well as vapours of heavier components of gas condensate. To estimate the distribution of explosive concentration of petroleum product vapours in the near surface layer of the atmosphere, it is necessary to determine the characteristics of the source of the contamination. Based on the analysis of theoretical works concerning to the formation of the velocity field in the upper layer of the sea as a result of large amounts of gas coming to the surface, an analytical model is proposed to calculate the size of the area in which a significant amount of gas condensate coming to the surface is vaporised during accidents at shallow-water wells. The stationary regime of reservoir fluid flow during fountaining of offshore gas and oil wells with an underwater location of their mouths is considered. A low-parametric model of oil product evaporation from films of different thickness is constructed. It is shown that the size of the zone of intensive evaporation at shallow-water wells is determined by the volume flow of liquid fraction, its fractional composition and selected threshold for estimation of oil product vapour flow into the atmosphere. In the context of this work shallow water wells are wells with gas flow rate from 1 to 20 million cubic meters at sea depths of about 50–200 metres. In this case, the formation fluid jet from the wellhead on the seabed is transformed into a bubble plume, the stratification of the water column, typical for the summer-autumn period, does not limit the plume’s exit to the sea surface, and the velocity of bubble rise allows the gas dissolution process to be disregardded. The analysis was limited to almost calm hydrometeorological conditions. Such conditions are favourable for offshore operations, but unfavourable from the point of view of dispersion of high concentrations of oil product vapours in the near surface layer of the atmosphere. As a result of this work, an analytical dependence for an approximate assessment of the zone of intensive evaporation of gas condensate is proposed.

Study of the possibility of detecting traces of hazardous substances based on vapor detection
Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 3, pp. 451-463The article investigates the possibility of detecting traces of hazardous substances (explosives and narcotics) based on the detection of their vapors in the air. The relevance of the study stems from the need to counter terrorist threats and drug trafficking, where identifying even trace amounts of substances is critical. The focus is on mathematical modeling of the evaporation of a thin substance layer from a surface, based on molecular kinetic theory. A universal model is proposed, accounting for the physicochemical properties of substances, ambient temperature, adhesion to the surface, and the initial mass of the layer. Using the Hertz – Knudsen – Langmuir and Clausius – Clapeyron equations, analytical expressions are derived for the complete evaporation time, maximum vapor mass, and process dynamics. A dimensionless parameter, $\gamma$, is identified, determining the limiting conditions for evaporation. It is shown that substance adhesion (coefficient $\alpha$) affects the evaporation rate but not the final vapor mass. Calculations were performed for six model substances (TNT, RDX, PETN, amphetamine, cocaine, heroin) with a wide range of properties. At room temperature and a surface concentration of 100 ng/cm2, most substances evaporate completely, except for RDX, which remains on the surface at 84%. Evaporation times range from fractions of a second (amphetamine) to several hours (heroin). For low-volatility substances, the maximum mass capable of evaporating under given conditions is determined. The novelty of the work lies in the development of a universal model applicable to a broad class of hazardous substances and in identifying key parameters governing the evaporation process. The results enable the estimation of detection limits for trace substances using vapor-based methods and can be applied in the design of security systems.

Estimation of anisotropy of seismic response from fractured geological objects
Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 2, pp. 231-240Views (last year): 11. Citations: 4 (RSCI).Seismic survey process is the common method of prospecting and exploration of deposits: oil and natural gas. Invented at the beginning of the XX century, it has received significant development and is currently used by almost all service oil companies. Its main advantages are the acceptable cost of fieldwork (in comparison with drilling wells) and the accuracy of estimating the characteristics of the subsurface area. However, with the discovery of non-traditional deposits (for example, the Arctic shelf, the Bazhenov Formation), the task of improving existing and creating new seismic data processing technologies became important. Significant development in this direction is possible with the use of numerical simulation of the propagation of seismic waves in realistic models of the geological medium, since it is possible to specify an arbitrary internal structure of the medium with subsequent evaluation of the synthetic signal-response.
The present work is devoted to the study of spatial dynamic processes occurring in geological medium containing fractured inclusions in the process of seismic exploration. The authors constructed a three-dimensional model of a layered massif containing a layer of fluid-saturated cracks, which makes it possible to estimate the signal-response when the structure of the inhomogeneous inclusion is varied. To describe physical processes, we use a system of equations for a linearly elastic body in partial derivatives of the second order, which is solved numerically by a grid-characteristic method on hexahedral grid. In this case, the crack planes are identified at the stage of constructing the grid, and further an additional correction is used to ensure a correct seismic response for the model parameters typical for geological media.
In the paper, three-component area seismograms with a common explosion point were obtained. On their basis, the effect of the structure of a fractured medium on the anisotropy of the seismic response recorded on the day surface at a different distance from the source was estimated. It is established that the kinematic characteristics of the signal remain constant, while the dynamic characteristics for ordered and disordered models can differ by tens of percents.

Parallel implementation of the grid-characteristic method in the case of explicit contact boundaries
Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 5, pp. 667-678Views (last year): 18.We consider an application of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) technology for parallelization of the program code which solves equation of the linear elasticity theory. The solution of this equation describes the propagation of elastic waves in demormable rigid bodies. The solution of such direct problem of seismic wave propagation is of interest in seismics and geophysics. Our implementation of solver uses grid-characteristic method to make simulations. We consider technique to reduce time of communication between MPI processes during the simulation. This is important when it is necessary to conduct modeling in complex problem formulations, and still maintain the high level of parallelism effectiveness, even when thousands of processes are used. A solution of the problem of effective communication is extremely important when several computational grids with arbirtrary geometry of contacts between them are used in the calculation. The complexity of this task increases if an independent distribution of the grid nodes between processes is allowed. In this paper, a generalized approach is developed for processing contact conditions in terms of nodes reinterpolation from a given section of one grid to a certain area of the second grid. An efficient way of parallelization and establishing effective interprocess communications is proposed. For provided example problems we provide wave fileds and seismograms for both 2D and 3D formulations. It is shown that the algorithm can be realized both on Cartesian and on structured (curvilinear) computational grids. The considered statements demonstrate the possibility of carrying out calculations taking into account the surface topographies and curvilinear geometry of curvilinear contacts between the geological layers. Application of curvilinear grids allows to obtain more accurate results than when calculating only using Cartesian grids. The resulting parallelization efficiency is almost 100% up to 4096 processes (we used 128 processes as a basis to find efficiency). With number of processes larger than 4096, an expected gradual decrease in efficiency is observed. The rate of decline is not great, so at 16384 processes the parallelization efficiency remains at 80%.

Nonlinear supratransmission in a Pt3Al crystal at intense external influence
Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 1, pp. 109-117Views (last year): 18.The effect of the nonlinear supratransmission in crystal of A3B stoichiometry is studied by molecular dynamics on the example of Pt3Al alloy. This effect is the transfer of energy at frequencies outside the phonon spectrum of the crystal. Research of the mechanisms of energy transport from the material surface to the interior is the important task, both from the theoretical point of view and from the prospects for practical application in the modification of near-surface layers by treatment with intense external influence of various types. The model was a three-dimensional face-centered cubic crystal whose atoms interact by means of the multiparticle potential obtained by the embedded atom method, which provides greater realism of the model in comparison with the use of pair potentials. Various forms of oscillation of the external influence region are considered. The possibility of energy transport from the crystal surface to the interior is shown by excitation of quasi-breathers near the region of influence and their subsequent destruction in the crystal and scattering of the energy stored on them. The quasibreathers are high-amplitude nonlinear atoms' oscillations of the alloy lightweight component at frequencies outside the phonon spectrum of the crystal. This effect was observed not with every oscillation's form of the region of influence. Quasi-breathers appeared most intensely near the region of influence with sinusoidal form oscillations. The results obtained indicate that the contribution of quasi-breathers to the energy transfer through the crystal increases with increasing amplitude of the influence. The range of amplitudes from 0.05 to 0.5 Å is considered. The frequency of the influence varied from 0.2 to 15 THz, which ensured the coverage of the entire spectrum of lowamplitude oscillations for this crystal's model. The minimum magnitude of the external effect amplitude at which this effect was observed was found to be 0.15 Å. At amplitudes greater than 0.5 Å, the cell rapidly decays for frequencies close to the optical branch of the phonon spectrum. The results of the study can be useful for laser processing of materials, surface treatment by low-energy plasma, and also in radiation materials science.

Numerical Simulation, Parallel Algorithms and Software for Performance Forecast of the System “Fractured-Porous Reservoir – Producing Well” During its Commissioning Into Operation
Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 6, pp. 1069-1075The mathematical model, finite-difference schemes and algorithms for computation of transient thermoand hydrodynamic processes involved in commissioning the unified system including the oil producing well, electrical submersible pump and fractured-porous reservoir with bottom water are developed. These models are implemented in the computer package to simulate transient processes with simultaneous visualization of their results along with computations. An important feature of the package Oil-RWP is its interaction with the special external program GCS which simulates the work of the surface electric control station and data exchange between these two programs. The package Oil-RWP sends telemetry data and current parameters of the operating submersible unit to the program module GCS (direct coupling). The station controller analyzes incoming data and generates the required control parameters for the submersible pump. These parameters are sent to Oil-RWP (feedback). Such an approach allows us to consider the developed software as the “Intellectual Well System”.
Some principal results of the simulations can be briefly presented as follows. The transient time between inaction and quasi-steady operation of the producing well depends on the well stream watering, filtration and capacitive parameters of oil reservoir, physical-chemical properties of phases and technical characteristics of the submersible unit. For the large time solution of the nonstationary equations governing the nonsteady processes is practically identical to the inverse quasi-stationary problem solution with the same initial data. The developed software package is an effective tool for analysis, forecast and optimization of the exploiting parameters of the unified oil-producing complex during its commissioning into the operating regime.

Numerical simulation of ice accretion in FlowVision software
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 1, pp. 83-96Certifying a transport airplane for the flights under icing conditions requires calculations aimed at definition of the dimensions and shapes of the ice bodies formed on the airplane surfaces. Up to date, software developed in Russia for simulation of ice accretion, which would be authorized by Russian certifying supervisory authority, is absent. This paper describes methodology IceVision recently developed in Russia on the basis of software FlowVision for calculations of ice accretion on airplane surfaces.
The main difference of methodology IceVision from the other approaches, known from literature, consists in using technology Volume Of Fluid (VOF — volume of fluid in cell) for tracking the surface of growing ice body. The methodology assumes solving a time-depended problem of continuous grows of ice body in the Euler formulation. The ice is explicitly present in the computational domain. The energy equation is integrated inside the ice body. In the other approaches, changing the ice shape is taken into account by means of modifying the aerodynamic surface and using Lagrangian mesh. In doing so, the heat transfer into ice is allowed for by an empirical model.
The implemented mathematical model provides capability to simulate formation of rime (dry) and glaze (wet) ice. It automatically identifies zones of rime and glaze ice. In a rime (dry) ice zone, the temperature of the contact surface between air and ice is calculated with account of ice sublimation and heat conduction inside the ice. In a glaze (wet) ice zone, the flow of the water film over the ice surface is allowed for. The film freezes due to evaporation and heat transfer inside the air and the ice. Methodology IceVision allows for separation of the film. For simulation of the two-phase flow of the air and droplets, a multi-speed model is used within the Euler approach. Methodology IceVision allows for size distribution of droplets. The computational algorithm takes account of essentially different time scales for the physical processes proceeding in the course of ice accretion, viz., air-droplets flow, water flow, and ice growth. Numerical solutions of validation test problems demonstrate efficiency of methodology IceVision and reliability of FlowVision results.
