World dynamics as an object of modeling (for the fiftieth anniversary of the first report to the Club of Rome)
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 6, pp. 1371-1394

In the last quarter of the twentieth century, the nature of global demographic and economic development began to change rapidly: the continuously accelerating growth of the main characteristics that took place over the previous two hundred years was replaced by a sharp slowdown. In the context of these changes, the role of a long-term forecast of global dynamics is increasing. At the same time, the forecast should be based not on inertial projection of past trends into future periods, but on mathematical modeling of fundamental patterns of historical development. The article presents preliminary results of research on mathematical modeling and forecasting of global demographic and economic dynamics based on this approach. The basic dynamic equations reflecting this dynamics are proposed, the modification of these equations in relation to different historical epochs is justified. For each historical epoch, based on the analysis of the corresponding system of equations, a phase portrait was determined and its features were analyzed. Based on this analysis, conclusions were drawn about the patterns of world development in the period under review.

It is shown that mathematical description of technology development is important for modeling historical dynamics. A method for describing technological dynamics is proposed, on the basis of which the corresponding mathematical equations are proposed.

Three stages of historical development are considered: the stage of agrarian society (before the beginning of the XIX century), the stage of industrial society (XIX–XX centuries) and the modern era. The proposed mathematical model shows that an agrarian society is characterized by cyclical demographic and economic dynamics, while an industrial society is characterized by an increase in demographic and economic characteristics close to hyperbolic.

The results of mathematical modeling have shown that humanity is currently moving to a fundamentally new phase of historical development. There is a slowdown in growth and the transition of human society into a new phase state, the shape of which has not yet been determined. Various options for further development are considered.

Methodology of aircraft icing calculation in a wide range of climate and speed parameters. Applicability within the NLG-25 airworthiness standards
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 4, pp. 957-978

Certifying a transport airplane for the flights under icing conditions in Russia was carried out within the framework of the requirements of Annex С to the AP-25 Aviation Rules. In force since 2023 to replace AP-25 the new Russian certification document “Airworthiness Standards” (NLG-25) proposes the introduction of Appendix O. A feature of Appendix O is the need to carry out calculations in conditions of high liquid water content and with large water drops (500 microns or more). With such parameters of the dispersed flow, such physical processes as the disruption and splashing of a water film when large drops enter it become decisive. The flow of a dispersed medium under such conditions is essentially polydisperse. This paper describes the modifications of the IceVision technique implemented on the basis of the FlowVision software package for the ice accretion calculations within the framework of Appendix O.

The main difference between the IceVision method and the known approaches is the use of the Volume of fluid (VOF) technology to the shape of ice changes tracking. The external flow around the aircraft is calculated simultaneously with the growth of ice and its heating. Ice is explicitly incorporated in the computational domain; the heat transfer equation is solved in it. Unlike the Lagrangian approaches, the Euler computational grid is not completely rebuilt in the IceVision technique: only the cells containing the contact surface are changed.

The IceVision 2.0 version accounts for stripping the film, as well as bouncing and splashing of falling drops at the surfaces of the aircraft and ice. The diameter of secondary droplets is calculated using known empirical correlations. The speed of the water film flow over the surface is determined taking into account the action of aerodynamic forces, gravity, hydrostatic pressure gradient and surface tension force. The result of taking into account surface tension is the effect of contraction of the film, which leads to the formation of water flows in the form of rivulets and ice deposits in the form of comb-like growths. An energy balance relation is fulfilled on the ice surface that takes into account the energy of falling drops, heat exchange between ice and air, the heat of crystallization, evaporation, sublimation and condensation. The paper presents the results of solving benchmark and model problems, demonstrating the effectiveness of the IceVision technique and the reliability of the obtained results.

  3. The creation of a virtual laboratory stand that allows one to obtain reliable characteristics that can be proven as actual, taking into account errors and noises (which is the main distinguishing feature of a computational experiment from model studies) is one of the main problems of this work. It considers the following task: there is a rectangular waveguide in the single operating mode, on the wide wall of which a technological hole is cut, through which a sample for research is placed into the cavity of the transmission line. The recovery algorithm is as follows: the laboratory measures the network parameters (S11 and/or S21) in the transmission line with the sample. In the computer model of the laboratory stand, the sample geometry is reconstructed and an iterative process of optimization (or sweeping) of the electrophysical parameters is started, the mask of this process is the experimental data, and the stop criterion is the interpretive estimate of proximity (or residual). It is important to note that the developed computer model, along with its apparent simplicity, is initially ill-conditioned. To set up a computational experiment, the Comsol modeling environment is used. The results of the computational experiment with a good degree of accuracy coincided with the results of laboratory studies. Thus, experimental verification was carried out for several significant components, both the computer model in particular and the algorithm for restoring the target parameters in general. It is important to note that the computer model developed and described in this work may be effectively used for a computational experiment to restore the full dielectric parameters of a complex geometry target. Weak bianisotropy effects can also be detected, including chirality, gyrotropy, and material nonreciprocity. The resulting model is, by definition, incomplete, but its completeness is the highest of the considered options, while at the same time, the resulting model is well conditioned. Particular attention in this work is paid to the modeling of a coaxial-waveguide transition, it is shown that the use of a discrete-element approach is preferable to the direct modeling of the geometry of a microwave device.

Current issues in computational modeling of thrombosis, fibrinolysis, and thrombolysis
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 4, pp. 975-995

Hemostasis system is one of the key body’s defense systems, which is presented in all the liquid tissues and especially important in blood. Hemostatic response is triggered as a result of the vessel injury. The interaction between specialized cells and humoral systems leads to the formation of the initial hemostatic clot, which stops bleeding. After that the slow process of clot dissolution occurs. The formation of hemostatic plug is a unique physiological process, because during several minutes the hemostatic system generates complex structures on a scale ranging from microns for microvessel injury or damaged endothelial cell-cell contacts, to centimeters for damaged systemic arteries. Hemostatic response depends on the numerous coordinated processes, which include platelet adhesion and aggregation, granule secretion, platelet shape change, modification of the chemical composition of the lipid bilayer, clot contraction, and formation of the fibrin mesh due to activation of blood coagulation cascade. Computer modeling is a powerful tool, which is used to study this complex system at different levels of organization. This includes study of intracellular signaling in platelets, modelling humoral systems of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis, and development of the multiscale models of thrombus growth. There are two key issues of the computer modeling in biology: absence of the adequate physico-mathematical description of the existing experimental data due to the complexity of the biological processes, and high computational complexity of the models, which doesn’t allow to use them to test physiologically relevant scenarios. Here we discuss some key unresolved problems in the field, as well as the current progress in experimental research of hemostasis and thrombosis. New findings lead to reevaluation of the existing concepts and development of the novel computer models. We focus on the arterial thrombosis, venous thrombosis, thrombosis in microcirculation and the problems of fibrinolysis and thrombolysis. We also briefly discuss basic types of the existing mathematical models, their computational complexity, and principal issues in simulation of thrombus growth in arteries.

On tire models accounting for both deformed state and coupled dry friction in a contact spot
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 1, pp. 163-173

A proposed approximate model of the rolling of a deforming wheel with a pneumatic tire allows one to account as well forces in tires as the effect of the dry friction on the stability of the rolling upon the shimmy phenomenon prognosis. The model os based on the theory of the dry friction with combined kinematics of relative motion of interacting bodies, i. e. under the condition of simultaneous rolling, sliding, and spinning with accounting for the real shape of a contact spot and contact pressure distribution. The resultant vector and couple of the forces generated by the contact interaction with dry friction are defined by integration over the contact area, whereas the static contact pressure under the conditions of vanishing velocity of sliding and angular velocity of spinning is computed after the finite-element solution for the statical contact of a pneumatic with a rigid road with accounting forreal internal structure and properties of a tire. The solid finite element model of a typical tire with longitudinal thread is used below as a background. Given constant boost pressure, vertical load and static friction factor 0.5 the numerical solution is constructed, as well as the appropriate solutions for lateral and torsional kinematic loading. It is shown that the contact interaction of a pneumatic tire and an absolutely rigid road could be represented without crucial loss of accuracy as two typical stages, the adhesion and the slip; the contact area shape remains nevertheless close to a circle. The approximate diagrams are constructed for both lateral force and friction torque; on the initial stage the diagrams are linear so that corresponds to the elastic deformation of a tire while on the second stage both force and torque values are constant and correspond to the dry friction force and torque. For the last stages the approximate formulae for the longitudinal and lateral friction force and the friction torque are constructed on the background of the theory of the dry friction with combined kinematics. The obtained model can be treated as a combination of the Keldysh model of elastic wheel with no slip and spin and the Klimov rigid wheel model interacting with a road by dry friction forces.

The problem of choosing solutions in the classical format of the description of a molecular system
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 6, pp. 1573-1600

The numerical methods developed by the author recently for calculating the molecular system based on the direct solution of the Schrodinger equation by the Monte Carlo method have shown a huge uncertainty in the choice of solutions. On the one hand, it turned out to be possible to build many new solutions; on the other hand, the problem of their connection with reality has become sharply aggravated. In ab initio quantum mechanical calculations, the problem of choosing solutions is not so acute after the transition to the classical format of describing a molecular system in terms of potential energy, the method of molecular dynamics, etc. In this paper, we investigate the problem of choosing solutions in the classical format of describing a molecular system without taking into account quantum mechanical prerequisites. As it turned out, the problem of choosing solutions in the classical format of describing a molecular system is reduced to a specific marking of the configuration space in the form of a set of stationary points and reconstruction of the corresponding potential energy function. In this formulation, the solution of the choice problem is reduced to two possible physical and mathematical problems: to find all its stationary points for a given potential energy function (the direct problem of the choice problem), to reconstruct the potential energy function for a given set of stationary points (the inverse problem of the choice problem). In this paper, using a computational experiment, the direct problem of the choice problem is discussed using the example of a description of a monoatomic cluster. The number and shape of the locally equilibrium (saddle) configurations of the binary potential are numerically estimated. An appropriate measure is introduced to distinguish configurations in space. The format of constructing the entire chain of multiparticle contributions to the potential energy function is proposed: binary, threeparticle, etc., multiparticle potential of maximum partiality. An infinite number of locally equilibrium (saddle) configurations for the maximum multiparticle potential is discussed and illustrated. A method of variation of the number of stationary points by combining multiparticle contributions to the potential energy function is proposed. The results of the work listed above are aimed at reducing the huge arbitrariness of the choice of the form of potential that is currently taking place. Reducing the arbitrariness of choice is expressed in the fact that the available knowledge about the set of a very specific set of stationary points is consistent with the corresponding form of the potential energy function.

Simulation of forming of UFG Ti-6-4 alloy at low temperature of superplasticity
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 1, pp. 127-133

Superplastic forming of Ni and Ti based alloys is widely used in aerospace industry. The main advantage of using the effect of superplasticity in sheet metal forming processes is a feasibility of forming materials with a high amount of plastic strain in conditions of prevailing tensile stresses. This article is dedicated to study commercial FEM software SFTC DEFORM application for prediction thickness deviation during low temperature superplastic forming of UFG Ti-6-4 alloy. Experimentally, thickness deviation during superplastic forming can be observed in the local area of plastic deformation and this process is aggravated by local softening of the metal and this is stipulated by microstructure coarsening. The theoretical model was prepared to analyze experimentally observed metal flow. Two approaches have been used for that. The first one is the using of integrated creep rheology model in DEFORM. As superplastic effect is observed only in materials with fine and ultrafine grain sizes the second approach is carried out using own user procedures for rheology model which is based on microstructure evolution equations. These equations have been implemented into DEFORM via Fortran user’s solver subroutines. Using of FEM simulation for this type of forming allows tracking a strain rate in different parts of a workpiece during a process, which is crucial for maintaining the superplastic conditions. Comparison of these approaches allows us to make conclusions about effect of microstructure evolution on metal flow during superplastic deformation. The results of the FEM analysis and theoretical conclusions have been approved by results of the conducted Erichsen test. The main issues of this study are as follows: a) the DEFORM software allows an engineer to predict formation of metal shape under the condition of low-temperature superplasticity; b) in order to augment the accuracy of the prediction of local deformations, the effect of the microstructure state of an alloy having sub-microcristalline structure should be taken into account in the course of calculations in the DEFORM software.

  8. Segmentation of medical image is one of the most challenging tasks in analysis of medical image. It classifies the organs pixels or lesions from medical images background like MRI or CT scans, that is to provide critical information about the human organ’s volumes and shapes. In scientific imaging field, medical imaging is considered one of the most important topics due to the rapid and continuing progress in computerized medical image visualization, advances in analysis approaches and computer-aided diagnosis. Digital image processing becomes more important in healthcare field due to the growing use of direct digital imaging systems for medical diagnostics. Due to medical imaging techniques, approaches of image processing are now applicable in medicine. Generally, various transformations will be needed to extract image data. Also, a digital image can be considered an approximation of a real situation includes some uncertainty derived from the constraints on the process of vision. Since information on the level of uncertainty will influence an expert’s attitude. To address this challenge, we propose novel framework involving interval concept that consider a good tool for dealing with the uncertainty, In the proposed approach, the medical images are transformed into interval valued representation approach and entropies are defined for an image object and background. Then we determine a threshold for lower-bound image and for upper-bound image, and then calculate the mean value for the final output results. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, we evaluate it by using synthetic image and its ground truth. Experimental results showed how performance of the segmentation-based entropy threshold can be enhanced using proposed approach to overcome ambiguity.

Numerical simulation of sportsman's external flow
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 2, pp. 331-344

Numerical simulation of moving sportsman external flow is presented. The unique method is developed for obtaining integral aerodynamic characteristics, which were the function of the flow regime (i.e. angle of attack, flow speed) and body position. Individual anthropometric characteristics and moving boundaries of sportsman (or sports equipment) during the race are taken into consideration.

Numerical simulation is realized using FlowVision CFD. The software is based on the finite volume method, high-performance numerical methods and reliable mathematical models of physical processes. A Cartesian computational grid is used by FlowVision, the grid generation is a completely automated process. Local grid adaptation is used for solving high-pressure gradient and object complex shape. Flow simulation process performed by solutions systems of equations describing movement of fluid and/or gas in the computational domain, including: mass, moment and energy conservation equations; state equations; turbulence model equations. FlowVision permits flow simulation near moving bodies by means of computational domain transformation according to the athlete shape changes in the motion. Ski jumper aerodynamic characteristics are studied during all phases: take-off performance in motion, in-run and flight. Projected investigation defined simulation method, which includes: inverted statement of sportsman external flow development (velocity of the motion is equal to air flow velocity, object is immobile); changes boundary of the body technology defining; multiple calculations with the national team member data projecting. The research results are identification of the main factors affected to jumping performance: aerodynamic forces, rotating moments etc. Developed method was tested with active sportsmen. Ski jumpers used this method during preparations for Sochi Olympic Games 2014. A comparison of the predicted characteristics and experimental data shows a good agreement. Method versatility is underlined by performing swimmer and skater flow simulation. Designed technology is applicable for sorts of natural and technical objects.

Models for spatial selection during location-aware beamforming in ultra-dense millimeter wave radio access networks
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 1, pp. 195-216

The work solves the problem of establishing the dependence of the potential for spatial selection of useful and interfering signals according to the signal-to-interference ratio criterion on the positioning error of user equipment during beamforming by their location at a base station, equipped with an antenna array. Configurable simulation parameters include planar antenna array with a different number of antenna elements, movement trajectory, as well as the accuracy of user equipment location estimation using root mean square error of coordinate estimates. The model implements three algorithms for controlling the shape of the antenna radiation pattern: 1) controlling the beam direction for one maximum and one zero; 2) controlling the shape and width of the main beam; 3) adaptive beamforming. The simulation results showed, that the first algorithm is most effective, when the number of antenna array elements is no more than 5 and the positioning error is no more than 7 m, and the second algorithm is appropriate to employ, when the number of antenna array elements is more than 15 and the positioning error is more than 5 m. Adaptive beamforming is implemented using a training signal and provides optimal spatial selection of useful and interfering signals without device location data, but is characterized by high complexity of hardware implementation. Scripts of the developed models are available for verification. The results obtained can be used in the development of scientifically based recommendations for beam control in ultra-dense millimeter-wave radio access networks of the fifth and subsequent generations.
