Construction and investigation of continuous cellular automatа model of heat conductivity processes with first order phase transitions
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2013, v. 5, no. 2, pp. 141-152

The process of heat conduction, accompanied by the first order phase transitions is discussed in this article. Using cellular automates simulation was investigated class of problems that have broad application in practice. In this paper we calculate the temperature distribution in the depth of the soil at different times for a problem of freezing of moist soil. Another task — zone growing — has been modeled by cellular automates too. The coincidence of real and modeling parameters of the system confirms the feasibility of using the selected method of modeling of physical processes.

Simulation of flight and destruction of the Benešov bolid
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 5, pp. 605-618

Comets and asteroids are recognized by the scientists and the governments of all countries in the world to be one of the most significant threats to the development and even the existence of our civilization. Preventing this threat includes studying the motion of large meteors through the atmosphere that is accompanied by various physical and chemical phenomena. Of particular interest to such studies are the meteors whose trajectories have been recorded and whose fragments have been found on Earth. Here, we study one of such cases. We develop a model for the motion and destruction of natural bodies in the Earth’s atmosphere, focusing on the Benešov bolid (EN070591), a bright meteor registered in 1991 in the Czech Republic by the European Observation System. Unique data, that includes the radiation spectra, is available for this bolid. We simulate the aeroballistics of the Benešov meteoroid and of its fragments, taking into account destruction due to thermal and mechanical processes. We compute the velocity of the meteoroid and its mass ablation using the equations of the classical theory of meteor motion, taking into account the variability of the mass ablation along the trajectory. The fragmentation of the meteoroid is considered using the model of sequential splitting and the statistical stress theory, that takes into account the dependency of the mechanical strength on the length scale. We compute air flows around a system of bodies (shards of the meteoroid) in the regime where mutual interplay between them is essential. To that end, we develop a method of simulating air flows based on a set of grids that allows us to consider fragments of various shapes, sizes, and masses, as well as arbitrary positions of the fragments relative to each other. Due to inaccuracies in the early simulations of the motion of this bolid, its fragments could not be located for about 23 years. Later and more accurate simulations have allowed researchers to locate four of its fragments rather far from the location expected earlier. Our simulations of the motion and destruction of the Benešov bolid show that its interaction with the atmosphere is affected by multiple factors, such as the mass and the mechanical strength of the bolid, the parameters of its motion, the mechanisms of destruction, and the interplay between its fragments.

Analysis of a numerical method for studying upward flame spread over solid material
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 6, pp. 755-774

Reduction of the fire hazard of polymeric materials is one of the important scientific and technical problems. Since complexity of experimental procedures associated with flame spread, establishing reacting flows theoretical basics turned out to be crucial field of modern fundamental science. In order to determine parameters of flame spread over solid combustible materials numerical modelling methods have to be improved. Large amount of physical and chemical processes taking place needed to be resolved not just separately one by one but in connection with each other in gas and solid phases.

Upward flame spread over vertical solid combustible material is followed by unsteady eddy structures of gas flow in the vicinity of flame zone caused by thermal instability and natural convection forces accelerating hot combustion products. At every moment different amount of heat energy is transferred from hot gas-phase flame to solid material because of eddy flow structures. Therefore, satisfactory heat flux and eddy flow modelling are important to estimate flame spread rate.

In the current study we evaluated parameters of numerical method for flame spread over solid combustible material problem taking into account coupled nature of complex interaction between gas phase, solid material and eddy flow resulted from natural convection. We studied aspects of different approximation schemes used in differential equations integration process over space and time, of fields relaxation during iterations procedure carried out inside time step, of different time step values.

Mathematical model formulated allows to simulate flame spread over solid combustible material. Fluid dynamics is modeled by Navier – Stokes system of equations, eddy flow is described by combined turbulent model RANS–LES (DDES), turbulent combustion is resolved by modified turbulent combustion model Eddy Break-Up taking into account kinetic effects, radiation transfer is modeled by spherical harmonics method of first order approximation (P1). The equations presented are solved in OpenFOAM software.

Hierarchical method for mathematical modeling of stochastic thermal processes in complex electronic systems
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 4, pp. 613-630

A hierarchical method of mathematical and computer modeling of interval-stochastic thermal processes in complex electronic systems for various purposes is developed. The developed concept of hierarchical structuring reflects both the constructive hierarchy of a complex electronic system and the hierarchy of mathematical models of heat exchange processes. Thermal processes that take into account various physical phenomena in complex electronic systems are described by systems of stochastic, unsteady, and nonlinear partial differential equations and, therefore, their computer simulation encounters considerable computational difficulties even with the use of supercomputers. The hierarchical method avoids these difficulties. The hierarchical structure of the electronic system design, in general, is characterized by five levels: Level 1 — the active elements of the ES (microcircuits, electro-radio-elements); Level 2 — electronic module; Level 3 — a panel that combines a variety of electronic modules; Level 4 — a block of panels; Level 5 — stand installed in a stationary or mobile room. The hierarchy of models and modeling of stochastic thermal processes is constructed in the reverse order of the hierarchical structure of the electronic system design, while the modeling of interval-stochastic thermal processes is carried out by obtaining equations for statistical measures. The hierarchical method developed in the article allows to take into account the principal features of thermal processes, such as the stochastic nature of thermal, electrical and design factors in the production, assembly and installation of electronic systems, stochastic scatter of operating conditions and the environment, non-linear temperature dependencies of heat exchange factors, unsteady nature of thermal processes. The equations obtained in the article for statistical measures of stochastic thermal processes are a system of 14 non-stationary nonlinear differential equations of the first order in ordinary derivatives, whose solution is easily implemented on modern computers by existing numerical methods. The results of applying the method for computer simulation of stochastic thermal processes in electron systems are considered. The hierarchical method is applied in practice for the thermal design of real electronic systems and the creation of modern competitive devices.

Physical research, numerical and analytical modeling of explosion phenomena. A review
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 3, pp. 505-546

The review considers a wide range of phenomena and problems associated with the explosion. Detailed numerical studies revealed an interesting physical effect — the formation of discrete vortex structures directly behind the front of a shock wave propagating in dense layers of a heterogeneous atmosphere. The necessity of further investigation of such phenomena and the determination of the degree of their connection with the possible development of gas-dynamic instability is shown. The brief analysis of numerous works on the thermal explosion of meteoroids during their high-speed movement in the Earth’s atmosphere is given. Much attention is paid to the development of a numerical algorithm for calculating the simultaneous explosion of several fragments of meteoroids and the features of the development of such a gas-dynamic flow are analyzed. The work shows that earlier developed algorithms for calculating explosions can be successfully used to study explosive volcanic eruptions. The paper presents and discusses the results of such studies for both continental and underwater volcanoes with certain restrictions on the conditions of volcanic activity.

The mathematical analysis is performed and the results of analytical studies of a number of important physical phenomena characteristic of explosions of high specific energy in the ionosphere are presented. It is shown that the preliminary laboratory physical modeling of the main processes that determine these phenomena is of fundamental importance for the development of sufficiently complete and adequate theoretical and numerical models of such complex phenomena as powerful plasma disturbances in the ionosphere. Laser plasma is the closest object for such a simulation. The results of the corresponding theoretical and experimental studies are presented and their scientific and practical significance is shown. The brief review of recent years on the use of laser radiation for laboratory physical modeling of the effects of a nuclear explosion on asteroid materials is given.

As a result of the analysis performed in the review, it was possible to separate and preliminarily formulate some interesting and scientifically significant questions that must be investigated on the basis of the ideas already obtained. These are finely dispersed chemically active systems formed during the release of volcanoes; small-scale vortex structures; generation of spontaneous magnetic fields due to the development of instabilities and their role in the transformation of plasma energy during its expansion in the ionosphere. It is also important to study a possible laboratory physical simulation of the thermal explosion of bodies under the influence of highspeed plasma flow, which has only theoretical interpretations.

Numerical study of thermal destruction of the ”Chelyabinsk” meteorite when entering the Earth’s atmosphere
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2013, v. 5, no. 6, pp. 941-956

A mathematical model for the numerical study of thermal destruction of the "Chelyabinsk" meteorite when entering the Earth’s atmosphere is presented in the article. The study was conducted in the framework of an integrated approach, including the calculation of the meteorite trajectory associated with the physical processes connected with the meteorite motion. Together with the trajectory the flow field and radiation-convective heat
transfer were determined as well as warming and destruction of the meteorite under the influence of the calculated heat load. An integrated approach allows to determine the trajectories of space objects more precisely, predict the area of their fall and destruction.

Modeling of thermal desorption and hydrogen permeability
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2014, v. 6, no. 5, pp. 679-703

In the context of problems of hydrogen and thermonuclear power engineering intensive research of the hydrogen isotopes properties is being conducted. Mathematical models help to specify physical-chemical ideas about the interaction of hydrogen isotopes with structural materials, to discover the limiting factors. Classical diffusion models are often insufficient. The paper is devoted to the models and numerical solution of the boundary-value problems of hydrogen thermodesorption and permeability taking into account nonlinear sorption-desorption dynamics on the surface and reversible capture of hydrogen atoms in the bulk. Algorithms based on difference approximations. The results of computer simulation of the hydrogen flux from a structural material sample are presented.

    Computer Research and Modeling, 2013, v. 5, no. 2, pp. 179-191

Mathematical simulation on unsteady natural convection in a closed porous cylindrical cavity having finite thickness heat-conducting solid walls in conditions of convective heat exchange with an environment has been carried out. A boundary-value problem of mathematical physics formulated in dimensionless variables such as stream function and temperature on the basis of Darcy–Boussinesq model has been solved by finite difference method. Effect of a porous medium permeability 10–5≤Da<∞, ratio between a solid wall thickness and the inner radius of a cylinder 0.1≤h/L≤0.3, a thermal conductivity ratio 1≤λ1,2≤20 and a dimensionless time on both local distributions of isolines and isotherms and integral complexes reflecting an intensity of convective flow and heat transfer has been analyzed in detail.

  9. The problem of the combustion of a gas suspension with an inhomogeneous distribution of particles over space occurs exists for the coal dust suspension combustion in combustion chambers and burners. The inhomogeneous distribution of particles in space can significantly affect the combustion velocity of the aerosolve of coal dust. The purpose of the present work is the numerically study the effect of the inhomogeneous distribution of particles and the composition of the coal dust on the combustion velocity of the coal dust in the air.

The physical and mathematical model of combustion of air-coal dust mixture with an inhomogeneous distribution of coal dust particles over space has been developed. The physical and mathematical formulation of the problem took into account the release of combustible volatile components from the particles upon their heating, the subsequent reaction of volatile components with air, a heterogeneous reaction on the surface of the particles, and the dependence of the thermal conductivity of the gas on temperature.

A parametric study was made of the effect of mass concentration, the content of volatile and the particle size of coal dust on the burning speed of a suspension of coal dust in the air. It is shown that the burning rate is greater for particles with a lower content of volatile components. The influence of the spatial distribution of particles on the burning rate of the coal-air mixture is analyzed. It is shown that the propagation velocity of the combustion front with respect to the suspension with an inhomogeneous particle distribution is higher than the propagation speed of the combustion front with respect to the suspension with a homogeneous particle distribution.

Computational modeling of the thermal and physical processes in the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 4, pp. 895-906

The development of a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) constituting a part of nuclear power-and-process station and intended for large-scale hydrogen production is now in progress in the Russian Federation. One of the key objectives in development of the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor is the computational justification of the accepted design.

The article gives the procedure for the computational analysis of thermal and physical characteristics of the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor. The procedure is based on the use of the state-of-the-art codes for personal computer (PC).

The objective of thermal and physical analysis of the reactor as a whole and of the core in particular was achieved in three stages. The idea of the first stage is to justify the neutron physical characteristics of the block-type core during burn-up with the use of the MCU-HTR code based on the Monte Carlo method. The second and the third stages are intended to study the coolant flow and the temperature condition of the reactor and the core in 3D with the required degree of detailing using the FlowVision and the ANSYS codes.

For the purpose of carrying out the analytical studies the computational models of the reactor flow path and the fuel assembly column were developed.

As per the results of the computational modeling the design of the support columns and the neutron physical characteristics of the fuel assembly were optimized. This results in the reduction of the total hydraulic resistance of the reactor and decrease of the maximum temperature of the fuel elements.

The dependency of the maximum fuel temperature on the value of the power peaking factors determined by the arrangement of the absorber rods and of the compacts of burnable absorber in the fuel assembly is demonstrated.
