Searching for realizable energy-efficient gaits of planar five-link biped with a point contact
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 1, pp. 155-170In this paper, we discuss the procedure for finding nominal trajectories of the planar five-link bipedal robot with point contact. To this end we use a virtual constraints method that transforms robot’s dynamics to a lowdimensional zero manifold; we also use a nonlinear optimization algorithms to find virtual constraints parameters that minimize robot’s cost of transportation. We analyzed the effect of the degree of Bezier polynomials that approximate the virtual constraints and continuity of the torques on the cost of transportation. Based on numerical results we found that it is sufficient to consider polynomials with degrees between five and six, as further increase in the degree of polynomial results in increased computation time while it does not guarantee reduction of the cost of transportation. Moreover, it was shown that introduction of torque continuity constraints does not lead to significant increase of the objective function and makes the gait more implementable on a real robot.
We propose a two step procedure for finding minimum of the considered optimization problem with objective function in the form of cost of transportation and with high number of constraints. During the first step we solve a feasibility problem: remove cost function (set it to zero) and search for feasible solution in the parameter space. During the second step we introduce the objective function and use the solution found in the first step as initial guess. For the first step we put forward an algorithm for finding initial guess that considerably reduced optimization time of the first step (down to 3–4 seconds) compared to random initialization. Comparison of the objective function of the solutions found during the first and second steps showed that on average during the second step objective function was reduced twofold, even though overall computation time increased significantly.

Application of the kinetic type model for study of a spatial spread of COVID-19
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 3, pp. 611-627A simple model based on a kinetic-type equation is proposed to describe the spread of a virus in space through the migration of virus carriers from a certain center. The consideration is carried out on the example of three countries for which such a one-dimensional model is applicable: Russia, Italy and Chile. The geographical location of these countries and their elongation in the direction from the centers of infection (Moscow, Milan and Lombardia in general, as well as Santiago, respectively) makes it possible to use such an approximation. The aim is to determine the dynamic density of the infected in time and space. The model is two-parameter. The first parameter is the value of the average spreading rate associated with the transfer of infected moving by transport vehicles. The second parameter is the frequency of the decrease of the infected as they move through the country, which is associated with the passengers reaching their destination, as well as with quarantine measures. The parameters are determined from the actual known data for the first days of the spatial spread of the epidemic. An analytical solution is being built; simple numerical methods are also used to obtain a series of calculations. The geographical spread of the disease is a factor taken into account in the model, the second important factor is that contact infection in the field is not taken into account. Therefore, the comparison of the calculated values with the actual data in the initial period of infection coincides with the real data, then these data become higher than the model data. Those no less model calculations allow us to make some predictions. In addition to the speed of infection, a similar “speed of recovery” is possible. When such a speed is found for the majority of the country's population, a conclusion is made about the beginning of a global recovery, which coincides with real data.

Mathematical and computational problems associated with the formation of structures in complex systems
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 4, pp. 805-815In this paper, the system of equations of magnetic hydrodynamics (MHD) is considered. The exact solutions found describe fluid flows in a porous medium and are related to the development of a core simulator and are aimed at creating a domestic technology «digital deposit» and the tasks of controlling the parameters of incompressible fluid. The central problem associated with the use of computer technology is large-dimensional grid approximations and high-performance supercomputers with a large number of parallel microprocessors. Kinetic methods for solving differential equations and methods for «gluing» exact solutions on coarse grids are being developed as possible alternatives to large-dimensional grid approximations. A comparative analysis of the efficiency of computing systems allows us to conclude that it is necessary to develop the organization of calculations based on integer arithmetic in combination with universal approximate methods. A class of exact solutions of the Navier – Stokes system is proposed, describing three-dimensional flows for an incompressible fluid, as well as exact solutions of nonstationary three-dimensional magnetic hydrodynamics. These solutions are important for practical problems of controlled dynamics of mineralized fluids, as well as for creating test libraries for verification of approximate methods. A number of phenomena associated with the formation of macroscopic structures due to the high intensity of interaction of elements of spatially homogeneous systems, as well as their occurrence due to linear spatial transfer in spatially inhomogeneous systems, are highlighted. It is fundamental that the emergence of structures is a consequence of the discontinuity of operators in the norms of conservation laws. The most developed and universal is the theory of computational methods for linear problems. Therefore, from this point of view, the procedures of «immersion» of nonlinear problems into general linear classes by changing the initial dimension of the description and expanding the functional spaces are important. Identification of functional solutions with functions makes it possible to calculate integral averages of an unknown, but at the same time its nonlinear superpositions, generally speaking, are not weak limits of nonlinear superpositions of approximations of the method, i.e. there are functional solutions that are not generalized in the sense of S. L. Sobolev.

Nonlinear modeling of oscillatory viscoelastic fluid with variable viscosity: a comparative analysis of dual solutions
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 2, pp. 409-431The viscoelastic fluid flow model across a porous medium has captivated the interest of many contemporary researchers due to its industrial and technical uses, such as food processing, paper and textile coating, packed bed reactors, the cooling effect of transpiration and the dispersion of pollutants through aquifers. This article focuses on the influence of variable viscosity and viscoelasticity on the magnetohydrodynamic oscillatory flow of second-order fluid through thermally radiating wavy walls. A mathematical model for this fluid flow, including governing equations and boundary conditions, is developed using the usual Boussinesq approximation. The governing equations are transformed into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations using non-similarity transformations. The numerical results obtained by applying finite-difference code based on the Lobatto IIIa formula generated by bvp4c solver are compared to the semi-analytical solutions for the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles obtained using the homotopy perturbation method (HPM). The effect of flow parameters on velocity, temperature, concentration profiles, skin friction coefficient, heat and mass transfer rate, and skin friction coefficient is examined and illustrated graphically. The physical parameters governing the fluid flow profoundly affected the resultant flow profiles except in a few cases. By using the slope linear regression method, the importance of considering the viscosity variation parameter and its interaction with the Lorentz force in determining the velocity behavior of the viscoelastic fluid model is highlighted. The percentage increase in the velocity profile of the viscoelastic model has been calculated for different ranges of viscosity variation parameters. Finally, the results are validated numerically for the skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number profiles.

Sensitivity analysis and semi-analytical solution for analyzing the dynamics of coffee berry disease
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 3, pp. 731-753Coffee berry disease (CBD), resulting from the Colletotrichum kahawae fungal pathogen, poses a severe risk to coffee crops worldwide. Focused on coffee berries, it triggers substantial economic losses in regions relying heavily on coffee cultivation. The devastating impact extends beyond agricultural losses, affecting livelihoods and trade economies. Experimental insights into coffee berry disease provide crucial information on its pathogenesis, progression, and potential mitigation strategies for control, offering valuable knowledge to safeguard the global coffee industry. In this paper, we investigated the mathematical model of coffee berry disease, with a focus on the dynamics of the coffee plant and Colletotrichum kahawae pathogen populations, categorized as susceptible, exposed, infected, pathogenic, and recovered (SEIPR) individuals. To address the system of nonlinear differential equations and obtain semi-analytical solution for the coffee berry disease model, a novel analytical approach combining the Shehu transformation, Akbari – Ganji, and Pade approximation method (SAGPM) was utilized. A comparison of analytical results with numerical simulations demonstrates that the novel SAGPM is excellent efficiency and accuracy. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis of the coffee berry disease model examines the effects of all parameters on the basic reproduction number $R_0$. Moreover, in order to examine the behavior of the model individuals, we varied some parameters in CBD. Through this analysis, we obtained valuable insights into the responses of the coffee berry disease model under various conditions and scenarios. This research offers valuable insights into the utilization of SAGPM and sensitivity analysis for analyzing epidemiological models, providing significant utility for researchers in the field.

Modeling the initial period of HIV-1 infection spread in the lymph node based on delay differential equations
Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 6, pp. 1181-1203A mathematical model describing the dynamics of HIV-1 infection in a single lymph node during the initial period of infection development is presented. Within the framework of the model, the infection of an individual is set by a nonnegative finite function describing the rate of entry of the initial viral particles into the lymph node. The equations of the model are derived with consideration of two factors: 1) the interaction of viral particles with naive CD4+ T lymphocytes in various phases of the cell cycle; 2) contact interaction between multiplying naive CD4+ T lymphocytes and infected CD4+ T lymphocytes producing viral particles. The specific feature of intercellular contact interactions is the formation of complexes consisting of pairs of these cells. The duration of the complexes’ existence is determined by the distribution functions over finite time intervals. The model is presented as a high-dimensional system of nonlinear delay differential equations, including two equations with distributed delay, and is supplemented with non-negative initial data. In the absence of HIV-1 infection, the model is reduced to four delay differential equations describing the number of naive CD4+ T-lymphocytes in different phases of the cell cycle. The global solvability of the model (the existence and uniqueness of the solution on the semi-axis) is determined, and the non-negativity of the solution components is established. To carry out computational experiments with the model, an algorithm for numerically solving the used system of differential equations are developed based on the semi-implicit Euler scheme for the case of uniform distribution of durations of the complexes existence. The results of computational experiments aimed at approximation the numerical solution of the model to describing the kinetics of HIV-1 infection spread in its acute phase, including the eclipse phase, are presented. The variable used as the observable is the variable describing the number of viral particles per milliliter of blood on days 10–12 after the onset of acute infection. The dynamics of the observable variable is numerically studied depending on the variation of the model parameters reflecting the patterns of complex formation and the formation of cells producing viral particles. The possibility of attenuation of HIV-1 infection in the lymph node at certain values of some of the model parameters is shown.

Computer Research and Modeling, 2013, v. 5, no. 4, pp. 623-634Views (last year): 1. Citations: 4 (RSCI).Comparative analysis of two models of porous medium (Dacry and Brinkman) on an example of mathematical simulation of transient natural convection in a porous vertical cylindrical cavity with heat-conducting shell of finite thickness in conditions of convective cooling from an environment has been carried out. The boundary-value problem of mathematical physics formulated in dimensionless variables such as stream function, vorticity and temperature has been solved by implicit finite difference method. The presented verification results validate used numerical approach and also confirm that the solution is not dependent on the mesh size. Features of the conjugate heat transfer problems with considered models of porous medium have been determined.

Linear and nonlinear optimization models of multiple covering of a bounded plane domain with circles
Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 6, pp. 1101-1110Problems of multiple covering ($k$-covering) of a bounded set $G$ with equal circles of a given radius are well known. They are thoroughly studied under the assumption that $G$ is a finite set. There are several papers concerned with studying this problem in the case where $G$ is a connected set. In this paper, we study the problem of minimizing the number of circles that form a $k$-covering, $k \geqslant 1$, provided that $G$ is a bounded convex plane domain.
For the above-mentioned problem, we state a 0-1 linear model, a general integer linear model, and a nonlinear model, imposing a constraint on the minimum distance between the centers of covering circles. The latter constraint is due to the fact that in practice one can place at most one device at each point. We establish necessary and sufficient solvability conditions for the linear models and describe one (easily realizable) variant of these conditions in the case where the covered set $G$ is a rectangle.
We propose some methods for finding an approximate number of circles of a given radius that provide the desired $k$-covering of the set $G$, both with and without constraints on distances between the circles’ centers. We treat the calculated values as approximate upper bounds for the number of circles. We also propose a technique that allows one to get approximate lower bounds for the number of circles that is necessary for providing a $k$-covering of the set $G$. In the general linear model, as distinct from the 0-1 linear model, we require no additional constraint. The difference between the upper and lower bounds for the number of circles characterizes the quality (acceptability) of the constructed $k$-covering.
We state a nonlinear mathematical model for the $k$-covering problem with the above-mentioned constraints imposed on distances between the centers of covering circles. For this model, we propose an algorithm which (in certain cases) allows one to find more exact solutions to covering problems than those calculated from linear models.
For implementing the proposed approach, we have developed computer programs and performed numerical experiments. Results of numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

The applicability of the approximation of single scattering in pulsed sensing of an inhomogeneous medium
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 5, pp. 1063-1079The mathematical model based on the linear integro-differential Boltzmann equation is considered in this article. The model describes the radiation transfer in the scattering medium irradiated by a point source. The inverse problem for the transfer equation is defined. This problem consists of determining the scattering coefficient from the time-angular distribution of the radiation flux density at a given point in space. The Neumann series representation for solving the radiation transfer equation is analyzed in the study of the inverse problem. The zero member of the series describes the unscattered radiation, the first member of the series describes a single-scattered field, the remaining members of the series describe a multiple-scattered field. When calculating the approximate solution of the radiation transfer equation, the single scattering approximation is widespread to calculated an approximate solution of the equation for regions with a small optical thickness and a low level of scattering. An analytical formula is obtained for finding the scattering coefficient by using this approximation for problem with additional restrictions on the initial data. To verify the adequacy of the obtained formula the Monte Carlo weighted method for solving the transfer equation is constructed and software implemented taking into account multiple scattering in the medium and the space-time singularity of the radiation source. As applied to the problems of high-frequency acoustic sensing in the ocean, computational experiments were carried out. The application of the single scattering approximation is justified, at least, at a sensing range of about one hundred meters and the double and triple scattered fields make the main impact on the formula error. For larger regions, the single scattering approximation gives at the best only a qualitative evaluation of the medium structure, sometimes it even does not allow to determine the order of the parameters quantitative characteristics of the interaction of radiation with matter.

Comparsion of stochastic approximation and sample average approximation for saddle point problem with bilinear coupling term
Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 2, pp. 381-391Stochastic optimization is a current area of research due to significant advances in machine learning and their applications to everyday problems. In this paper, we consider two fundamentally different methods for solving the problem of stochastic optimization — online and offline algorithms. The corresponding algorithms have their qualitative advantages over each other. So, for offline algorithms, it is required to solve an auxiliary problem with high accuracy. However, this can be done in a distributed manner, and this opens up fundamental possibilities such as, for example, the construction of a dual problem. Despite this, both online and offline algorithms pursue a common goal — solving the stochastic optimization problem with a given accuracy. This is reflected in the comparison of the computational complexity of the described algorithms, which is demonstrated in this paper.
The comparison of the described methods is carried out for two types of stochastic problems — convex optimization and saddles. For problems of stochastic convex optimization, the existing solutions make it possible to compare online and offline algorithms in some detail. In particular, for strongly convex problems, the computational complexity of the algorithms is the same, and the condition of strong convexity can be weakened to the condition of $\gamma$-growth of the objective function. From this point of view, saddle point problems are much less studied. Nevertheless, existing solutions allow us to outline the main directions of research. Thus, significant progress has been made for bilinear saddle point problems using online algorithms. Offline algorithms are represented by just one study. In this paper, this example demonstrates the similarity of both algorithms with convex optimization. The issue of the accuracy of solving the auxiliary problem for saddles was also worked out. On the other hand, the saddle point problem of stochastic optimization generalizes the convex one, that is, it is its logical continuation. This is manifested in the fact that existing results from convex optimization can be transferred to saddles. In this paper, such a transfer is carried out for the results of the online algorithm in the convex case, when the objective function satisfies the $\gamma$-growth condition.
