A surrogate neural network method for restoring the flow field from a homogeneous field by iterations in calculations of steady turbulent flows
Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 2, pp. 179-197In recent years, the use of neural network models for solving aerodynamics problems has become widespread. These models, trained on a set of previously obtained solutions, predict solutions to new problems. They are, in essence, interpolation algorithms. An alternative approach is to construct a neural network operator. This is a neural network that reproduces a numerical method used to solve a problem. It allows to find the solution in iterations. The paper considers the construction of such an operator using the UNet neural network with a spatial attention mechanism. It solves flow problems on a rectangular uniform grid that is common to a streamlined body and flow field. A correction mechanism is proposed to clarify the obtained solution. The problem of the stability of such an algorithm for solving a stationary problem is analyzed, and a comparison is made with other variants of its construction, including pushforward trick and positional encoding. The issue of selecting a set of iterations for forming a train dataset is considered, and the behavior of the solution is assessed using repeated use of a neural network operator.
A demonstration of the method is provided for the case of flow around a rounded plate with a turbulent flow, with various options for rounding, for fixed parameters of the incoming flow, with Reynolds number $\text{Re} = 10^5$ and Mach number $M = 0.15$. Since flows with these parameters of the incoming flow can be considered incompressible, only velocity components are directly studied. At the same time, the neural network model used to construct the operator has a common decoder for both velocity components. Comparison of flow fields and velocity profiles along the normal and outline of the body, obtained using a neural network operator and numerical methods, is carried out. Analysis is performed both on the plate and rounding. Simulation results confirm that the neural network operator allows finding a solution with high accuracy and stability.

Optimized machine learning methods for studying the thermodynamic behavior of complex spin systems
Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 1, pp. 25-40This paper presents a systematic study of the application of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) as an efficient tool for the analysis of critical and low-temperature phase states in two dimensional spin system models. The problem of calculating the dependence of the average energy $\langle E\rangle_T^{}$ on the spatial distribution of exchange integrals $J_k^{}$ for the Edwards – Anderson model on a square lattice with frustrated interactions is considered.
We further construct a single convolutional classifier of phase states of the ferromagnetic Ising model on square, triangular, honeycomb, and kagome lattices, trained on configurations generated by the Swendsen – Wang cluster algorithm. Сomputed temperature profiles of the averaged posterior probability of the high-temperature phase, form clear S-shaped curves that intersect in the vicinity of the theoretical critical temperatures and allow one to determine $T_c^{}$ for the kagome lattice without additional retraining.
It is shown that convolutional models substantially reduce the root-mean-square error (RMSE) compared with fully connected architectures and efficiently capture complex correlations between thermodynamic characteristics and the structure of magnetic correlated systems.

Neural network analysis of transportation flows of urban aglomeration using the data from public video cameras
Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 2, pp. 305-318Correct modeling of complex dynamics of urban transportation flows requires the collection of large volumes of empirical data to specify types of the modes and their identification. At the same time, setting a large number of observation posts is expensive and technically not always feasible. All this results in insufficient factographic support for the traffic control systems as well as for urban planners with the obvious consequences for the quality of their decisions. As one of the means to provide large-scale data collection at least for the qualitative situation analysis, the wide-area video cameras are used in different situation centers. There they are analyzed by human operators who are responsible for observation and control. Some video cameras provided their videos for common access, which makes them a valuable resource for transportation studies. However, there are significant problems with getting qualitative data from such cameras, which relate to the theory and practice of image processing. This study is devoted to the practical application of certain mainstream neuro-networking technologies for the estimation of essential characteristics of actual transportation flows. The problems arising in processing these data are analyzed, and their solutions are suggested. The convolution neural networks are used for tracking, and the methods for obtaining basic parameters of transportation flows from these observations are studied. The simplified neural networks are used for the preparation of training sets for the deep learning neural network YOLOv4 which is later used for the estimation of speed and density of automobile flows.

Convolutional neural networks of YOLO family for mobile computer vision systems
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 3, pp. 615-631The work analyzes known classes of convolutional neural network models and studies selected from them promising models for detecting flying objects in images. Object detection here refers to the detection, localization in space and classification of flying objects. The work conducts a comprehensive study of selected promising convolutional neural network models in order to identify the most effective ones from them for creating mobile real-time computer vision systems. It is shown that the most suitable models for detecting flying objects in images, taking into account the formulated requirements for mobile real-time computer vision systems, are models of the YOLO family, and five models from this family should be considered: YOLOv4, YOLOv4-Tiny, YOLOv4-CSP, YOLOv7 and YOLOv7-Tiny. An appropriate dataset has been developed for training, validation and comprehensive research of these models. Each labeled image of the dataset includes from one to several flying objects of four classes: “bird”, “aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicle”, “helicopter-type unmanned aerial vehicle”, and “unknown object” (objects in airspace not included in the first three classes). Research has shown that all convolutional neural network models exceed the specified threshold value by the speed of detecting objects in the image, however, only the YOLOv4-CSP and YOLOv7 models partially satisfy the requirements of the accuracy of detection of flying objects. It was shown that most difficult object class to detect is the “bird” class. At the same time, it was revealed that the most effective model is YOLOv7, the YOLOv4-CSP model is in second place. Both models are recommended for use as part of a mobile real-time computer vision system with condition of additional training of these models on increased number of images with objects of the “bird” class so that they satisfy the requirement for the accuracy of detecting flying objects of each four classes.

Applying artificial neural network for the selection of mixed refrigerant by boiling curve
Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 3, pp. 593-608The paper provides a method for selecting the composition of a refrigerant with a given isobaric cooling curve using an artificial neural network (ANN). This method is based on the use of 1D layers of a convolutional neural network. To train the neural network, we applied a technological model of a simple heat exchanger in the UniSim design program, using the Peng – Robinson equation of state. We created synthetic database on isobaric boiling curves of refrigerants of different compositions using the technological model. To record the database, an algorithm was developed in the Python programming language, and information on isobaric boiling curves for 1 049 500 compositions was uploaded using the COM interface. The compositions have generated by Monte Carlo method. Designed architecture of ANN allows select composition of a mixed refrigerant by 101 points of boiling curve. ANN gives mole flows of mixed refrigerant by composition (methane, ethane, propane, nitrogen) on the output layer. For training ANN, we used method of cyclical learning rate. For results demonstration we selected MR composition by natural gas cooling curve with a minimum temperature drop of 3 К and a maximum temperature drop of no more than 10 К, which turn better than we predicted via UniSim SQP optimizer and better than predicted by $k$-nearest neighbors algorithm. A significant value of this article is the fact that an artificial neural network can be used to select the optimal composition of the refrigerant when analyzing the cooling curve of natural gas. This method can help engineers select the composition of the mixed refrigerant in real time, which will help reduce the energy consumption of natural gas liquefaction.

Neuromorphic processor with hardware learning based on a convolutional neural network for audio spectrogram analysis
Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 1, pp. 81-99This paper proposes an architectural solution for organizing a convolutional neural network (CNN) oriented towards hardware implementation on edge devices under limited resources. To this goal, an approach to compressing spectrograms to a given size (28 × 28) is proposed using discretization, monoconversion, windowed Fourier transform, and two-dimensional interpolation. A balanced convolution procedure is developed based on compact convolutional filters, the size of which provides the balance between computational complexity and accuracy required for edge devices. An algorithm that enables convolution operations and calculation of the error function gradient in the convolutional layer in a single cycle ensuring increased performance in both inference and training modes of the CNN is proposed. The tradeoff between network trainability and its resistance to overfitting is optimized by applying the Dropout regularization method with a dropout coefficient of 0.5 for the fully connected layer.
The effectiveness of the proposed solution was demonstrated using the example of recognizing audio spectrograms of car and airplane engine sounds. The CNN was trained on a balanced dataset consisting of 7160 audio recordings. The trained network demonstrated high recognition accuracy (95%), low loss values (< 0.2), and balanced precision/recall/F-metric, demonstrating the effectiveness of the developed CNN model.

Advanced neural network models for UAV-based image analysis in remote pathology monitoring of coniferous forests
Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 4, pp. 641-663The key problems of remote forest pathology monitoring for coniferous forests affected by insect pests have been analyzed. It has been demonstrated that addressing these tasks requires the use of multiclass classification results for coniferous trees in high- and ultra-high-resolution images, which are promptly obtained through monitoring via satellites or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). An analytical review of modern models and methods for multiclass classification of coniferous forest images was conducted, leading to the development of three fully convolutional neural network models: Mo-U-Net, At-Mo-U-Net, and Res-Mo-U-Net, all based on the classical U-Net architecture. Additionally, the Segformer transformer model was modified to suit the task. For RGB images of fir trees Abies sibirica affected by the four-eyed bark beetle Polygraphus proximus, captured using a UAV-mounted camera, two datasets were created: the first dataset contains image fragments and their corresponding reference segmentation masks sized 256 × 256 × 3 pixels, while the second dataset contains fragments sized 480 × 480 × 3 pixels. Comprehensive studies were conducted on each trained neural network model to evaluate both classification accuracy for assessing the degree of damage (health status) of Abies sibirica trees and computation speed using test datasets from each set. The results revealed that for fragments sized 256 × 256 × 3 pixels, the At-Mo-U-Net model with an attention mechanism is preferred alongside the Modified Segformer model. For fragments sized 480 × 480 × 3 pixels, the Res-Mo-U-Net hybrid model with residual blocks demonstrated superior performance. Based on classification accuracy and computation speed results for each developed model, it was concluded that, for production-scale multiclass classification of affected fir trees, the Res-Mo-U-Net model is the most suitable choice. This model strikes a balance between high classification accuracy and fast computation speed, meeting conflicting requirements effectively.

Hybrid neural network for predicting coating characteristics in flame spraying
Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 1, pp. 101-116The paper presents a hybrid artificial neural network model based on an architecture that incorporates a convolutional image encoder (CNN) and an attention module (Attention-based Multiple Instance Learning, Attention MIL). This module aggregates informative features from a sequence of frames capturing the flame spraying process. Additional technological parameters—air pressure, propane pressure, and standoff distance — are integrated into the model via a tabular channel, enabling it to account for the relationship between visual data and numerical process regime characteristics. The software implementation was developed using the Streamlit platform and the PyTorch library. It features an interactive interface for model training and result visualization, analysis of attention weights across frames, and a prediction mode for output characteristics: surface roughness ($R_a$) and the mass of the deposited coating ($m$). Experimental studies were conducted on data from real-world technological processes, and a comparative analysis of the accuracy of various model configurations was performed. The results demonstrate that the hybrid neural network, which combines visual and tabular features, achieves higher prediction accuracy compared to models using only a single modality. Furthermore, when comparing different implementations of the hybrid network, it was established that using the attention mechanism to process the series of flame spray images provides a significant increase in accuracy over a simple averaging of features without attention. The application includes an attention visualization module that creates a montage of the most significant frames and displays their attention weights, allowing users to identify which frames had the greatest influence on the prediction. The model’s capability for export to the ONNX format for integration into process control systems is also demonstrated. The proposed approach showcases the effectiveness of fusing visual and tabular information for manufacturing process monitoring tasks. The model can serve as a foundation for developing a decision support system or an automated quality control system for coatings produced by flame spraying. The limitations of the implemented model and prospects for its further development are also considered.

Detecting large fractures in geological media using convolutional neural networks
Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 5, pp. 889-901This paper considers the inverse problem of seismic exploration — determining the structure of the media based on the recorded wave response from it. Large cracks are considered as target objects, whose size and position are to be determined.
he direct problem is solved using the grid-characteristic method. The method allows using physically based algorithms for calculating outer boundaries of the region and contact boundaries inside the region. The crack is assumed to be thin, a special condition on the crack borders is used to describe the crack.
The inverse problem is solved using convolutional neural networks. The input data of the neural network are seismograms interpreted as images. The output data are masks describing the medium on a structured grid. Each element of such a grid belongs to one of two classes — either an element of a continuous geological massif, or an element through which a crack passes. This approach allows us to consider a medium with an unknown number of cracks.
The neural network is trained using only samples with one crack. The final testing of the trained network is performed using additional samples with several cracks. These samples are not involved in the training process. The purpose of testing under such conditions is to verify that the trained network has sufficient generality, recognizes signs of a crack in the signal, and does not suffer from overtraining on samples with a single crack in the media.
The paper shows that a convolutional network trained on samples with a single crack can be used to process data with multiple cracks. The networks detects fairly small cracks at great depths if they are sufficiently spatially separated from each other. In this case their wave responses are clearly distinguishable on the seismogram and can be interpreted by the neural network. If the cracks are close to each other, artifacts and interpretation errors may occur. This is due to the fact that on the seismogram the wave responses of close cracks merge. This cause the network to interpret several cracks located nearby as one. It should be noted that a similar error would most likely be made by a human during manual interpretation of the data. The paper provides examples of some such artifacts, distortions and recognition errors.
