Numerical simulation of the propagation of probing pulses in a dense bed of a granular medium
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 6, pp. 1361-1384

The need to model high-speed flows of compressible media with shock waves in the presence of dense curtains or layers of particles arises when studying various processes, such as the dispersion of particles from a layer behind a shock wave or propagation of combustion waves in heterogeneous explosives. These directions have been successfully developed over the past few decades, but the corresponding mathematical models and computational algorithms continue to be actively improved. The mechanisms of wave processes in two-phase media differ in different models, so it is important to continue researching and improving these models.

The paper is devoted to the numerical study of the propagation of disturbances inside a sand bed under the action of successive impacts of a normally incident air shock wave. The setting of the problem follows the experiments of A. T.Akhmetov with co-authors. The aim of this study is to investigate the possible reasons for signal amplification on the pressure sensor within the bed, as observed under some conditions in experiments. The mathematical model is based on a one-dimensional system of Baer –Nunziato equations for describing dense flows of two-phase media taking into account intergranular stresses in the particle phase. The computational algorithm is based on the Godunov method for the Baer – Nunziato equations.

The paper describes the dynamics of waves inside and outside a particle bed after applying first and second pressure pulses to it. The main components of the flow within the bed are filtration waves in the gas phase and compaction waves in the solid phase. The compaction wave, generated by the first pulse and reflected from the walls of the shock tube, interacts with the filtration wave caused by the second pulse. As a result, the signal measured by the pressure sensor inside the bed has a sharp peak, explaining the new effect observed in experiments.

Development of anisotropic nonlinear noise-reduction algorithm for computed tomography data with context dynamic threshold
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 2, pp. 233-248

The article deals with the development of the noise-reduction algorithm based on anisotropic nonlinear data filtering of computed tomography (CT). Analysis of domestic and foreign literature has shown that the most effective algorithms for noise reduction of CT data use complex methods for analyzing and processing data, such as bilateral, adaptive, three-dimensional and other types of filtrations. However, a combination of such techniques is rarely used in practice due to long processing time per slice. In this regard, it was decided to develop an efficient and fast algorithm for noise-reduction based on simplified bilateral filtration method with three-dimensional data accumulation. The algorithm was developed on C ++11 programming language in Microsoft Visual Studio 2015. The main difference of the developed noise reduction algorithm is the use an improved mathematical model of CT noise, based on the distribution of Poisson and Gauss from the logarithmic value, developed earlier by our team. This allows a more accurate determination of the noise level and, thus, the threshold of data processing. As the result of the noise reduction algorithm, processed CT data with lower noise level were obtained. Visual evaluation of the data showed the increased information content of the processed data, compared to original data, the clarity of the mapping of homogeneous regions, and a significant reduction in noise in processing areas. Assessing the numerical results of the algorithm showed a decrease in the standard deviation (SD) level by more than 6 times in the processed areas, and high rates of the determination coefficient showed that the data were not distorted and changed only due to the removal of noise. Usage of newly developed context dynamic threshold made it possible to decrease SD level on every area of data. The main difference of the developed threshold is its simplicity and speed, achieved by preliminary estimation of the data array and derivation of the threshold values that are put in correspondence with each pixel of the CT. The principle of its work is based on threshold criteria, which fits well both into the developed noise reduction algorithm based on anisotropic nonlinear filtration, and another algorithm of noise-reduction. The algorithm successfully functions as part of the MultiVox workstation and is being prepared for implementation in a single radiological network of the city of Moscow.

  3. In this paper, a mathematical model of cellular tissue dynamics is considered. The first part gives the conclusion of the model, the main provisions and the formulation of the problem. In the second part, the final system is investigated numerically and the simulation results are presented. It is postulated that cellular tissue is a three-phase medium that consists of a solid skeleton (which is an extracellular matrix), cells and extracellular fluid. In addition, the presence of nutrients in the tissue is taken into account. The model is based on the equations of conservation of mass, taking into account mass exchange, the equations of conservation of momentum for each phase, as well as the diffusion equation for nutrients. The equation describing the cellular phase also takes into account the term describing the chemical effect on the tissue, which is called chemotaxis — the movement of cells caused by a gradient in the concentration of chemicals. The initial system of equations is reduced to a system of three equations for finding porosity, cell saturation and nutrient concentration. These equations are supplemented by initial and boundary conditions. In the one-dimensional case, the distribution of porosity, concentration of the cell phase and nutrients is set at the initial moment of time. A constant concentration of nutrients is set on the left border, which corresponds, for example, to the supply of oxygen from the vessel, as well as the flow of cell concentration on it is zero. Two types of conditions are considered at the right boundary: the first is the condition of impermeability of the right boundary, the second is the condition of constant concentration of the cell phase and zero flow of nutrient concentration. In both cases, the conditions for the matrix and extracellular fluid are the same, it is assumed that there is a source of nutrients (blood vessel) on the left border of the modeling area. As a result of modeling, it was revealed that chemotaxis has a significant effect on tissue growth. In the absence of chemotaxis, the compaction zone extends to the entire modeling area, but with an increase in the effect of chemotaxis on the tissue, a degradation area is formed in which the concentration of cells becomes lower than the initial one.

Simulation of pollution migration processes at municipal solid waste landfills
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 2, pp. 369-385

The article reports the findings of an investigation into pollution migration processes at the municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill located in the water protection zone of Lake Seliger (Tver Region). The distribution of pollutants is investigated and migration parameters are determined in field and laboratory conditions at the landfill site. A mathematical model describing physical and chemical processes of substance migration in soil strata is constructed. Pollutant migration is found to be due to a variety of factors. The major ones, having a significant impact on the migration of MSW ingredients and taken into account mathematically, include convective transport, diffusion and sorption processes. A modified mathematical model differs from its conventional counterparts by considering a number of parameters reflecting the decrease in the concentration of ammonium and nitrate nitrogen ions in ground water (transpiration by plant roots, dilution with infiltration waters, etc.). An analytical solution to assess the pollutant spread from the landfill is presented. The mathematical model provides a set of simulation models helping to obtain a computational solution of specific problems, vertical and horizontal migration of substances in the underground flow. Numerical experiments, analytical solutions, as well as field and laboratory data was studied the dynamics of pollutant distribution in the object under study up to the lake. A long-term forecast for the spread of landfill pollution is made. Simulation experiments showed that some zones of clean groundwater interact with those of contaminated groundwater during the pollution migration from the landfill, each characterized by a different pollutant content. The data of a computational experiments and analytical calculations are consistent with the findings of field and laboratory investigations of the object and give grounds to recommend the proposed models for predicting pollution migration from a landfill. The analysis of the pollution migration simulation allows to substantiate the numerical estimates of the increase in NH+4 and NO3 ion concentration with the landfill operation time. It is found that, after 100 years following the landfill opening, toxic filtrate components will fill the entire pore space from the landfill to the lake resulting in a significant deterioration of the ecosystem of Lake Seliger.

Modeling of sedimentation and filtration layer formation by discrete element method
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2012, v. 4, no. 1, pp. 105-120

The numerical model of sedimentation and suspension filtration is proposed in this paper. The model is based on dynamic variant of discrete element method. This model represents the particles behavior on microand meso-scales: pores, arches, flocks formation. In addition, the proposed model qualitatively reproduces macro phenomenon: sedimentation of particle layer, slow shrinkage of the layer, sealing of the layer under its own weight of the particles and the external applied force.
