About one version of the nodal method of characteristics
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 1, pp. 29-44

A variant of the inverse method of characteristics (IMH) is presented, in whose algorithm an additional fractional time step is introduced, which makes it possible to increase the accuracy of calculations due to a more accurate approximation of the characteristics. The calculation formulas of the modified method for the equations of the one-velocity model of a gas-liquid mixture are given, with the help of which one-dimensional and also flat test problems with self-similar solutions are calculated. When solving multidimensional problems, the original system of equations is split into a number of one-dimensional subsystems, for the calculation of which the inverse method of characteristics with a fractional time step is used. Using the proposed method, the following were calculated: the one-dimensional problem of the decay of an arbitrary discontinuity in a dispersed medium; a twodimensional problem of the interaction of a homogeneous gas-liquid flow with an obstacle with an attached shock wave, as well as a flow with a centered rarefaction wave. The results of numerical calculations of these problems are compared with self-similar solutions and their satisfactory agreement is noted. On the example of the Riemann problem with a shock wave, a comparison is made with a number of conservative, non-conservative, first and higher orders of accuracy schemes, from which, in particular, it follows that the presented calculation method, i. e. MIMC, quite competitive. Despite the fact that the application of MIMC requires many times more time than the original inverse method of characteristics (IMC), calculations can be carried out with an increased time step and, in some cases, more accurate results can be obtained. It is noted that the method with a fractional time step has advantages over the IMC in cases where the characteristics of the system are significantly curvilinear. For this reason, the use of MIMC, for example, for the Euler equations is inappropriate, since for the latter the characteristics within the time step differ little from straight lines.

Identification of the non-stationary coefficient of the lowest derivative in a parabolic equation
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 3, pp. 607-620

This paper presents a non-iterative method for solving an inverse problem for a parabolictype equation with an unknown time-dependent coefficient at the first spatial derivative. The overdetermination condition is specified as a definite integral of the unknown function with a weighting factor over the spatial domain or its subdomain. The study is motivated by the need to identify dynamic parameters in applied problems, particularly in modeling transport processes in biological fluids, where the flow velocity may vary over time. In contrast to conventional iterative methods that require substantial computational effort and careful selection of regularization parameters, an original approach based on solution decomposition is proposed. At each time layer, the solution is represented as a linear combination of solutions to two auxiliary systems with the same matrix and different right-hand sides, followed by the determination of the unknown coefficient from a discrete analogue of the overdetermination condition. This approach eliminates the need for an iterative procedure. In the presence of inexact overdetermination data, the highest reconstruction accuracy is achieved using a quasi-solution. Numerical experiments on test problems demonstrate high accuracy in reconstructing the unknown functions under small perturbations of the overdetermination condition. The results indicate strong potential for applications in medical diagnostics and other fields requiring rapid processing of experimental data.

Numerical modeling of the Kolmogorov flow in a viscous media, forced by the static force periodic in space
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 4, pp. 741-753

The main feature of a two-dimensional turbulent flow, constantly excited by an external force, is the appearance of an inverse energy cascade. Due to nonlinear effects, the spatial scale of the vortices created by the external force increases until the growth is stopped by the size of the cell. In the latter case, energy is accumulated at these dimensions. Under certain conditions, accumulation leads to the appearance of a system of coherent vortices. The observed vortices are of the order of the box size and, on average, are isotropic. Numerical simulation is an effective way to study such the processes. Of particular interest is the problem of studying the viscous fluid turbulence in a square cell under excitation by short-wave and long-wave static external forces. Numerical modeling was carried out with a weakly compressible fluid in a two-dimensional square cell with zero boundary conditions. The work shows how the flow characteristics are influenced by the spatial frequency of the external force and the magnitude of the viscosity of the fluid itself. An increase in the spatial frequency of the external force leads to stabilization and laminarization of the flow. At the same time, with an increased spatial frequency of the external force, a decrease in viscosity leads to the resumption of the mechanism of energy transfer along the inverse cascade due to a shift in the energy dissipation region to a region of smaller scales compared to the pump scale.

Numerical simulation of inverse mode propagation in-situ combustion direct-flow waves
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 5, pp. 993-1006

One of the promising technologies for enhanced oil recovery in the development of unconventional oil reservoirs is the thermo-gas method. The method is based on the injection of an oxygen-containing mixture into the formation and its transformation into a highly efficient displacing agent miscible with the formation of oil due to spontaneous in-situ oxidative processes. In some cases, this method has great potential compared to other methods of enhanced oil recovery. This paper discusses some issues of the propagation of in-situ combustion waves. Depending on the parameters of the reservoir and the injected mixture, such waves can propagate in different modes. In this paper, only the direct-flow inverse propagation mode is considered. In this mode, the combustion wave propagates in the direction of the oxidant flow and the reaction front lags behind the heatwave, in which the substance (hydrocarbon fractions, porous skeleton, etc.) is heated to temperatures sufficient for the oxidation reaction to occur. The paper presents the results of an analytical study and numerical simulation of the structure of the inverse wave of in-situ combustion. in two-phase flow in a porous layer. Some simplifying assumptions about the thermal properties of fluid phases was accepted, which allow, on the one hand, to modify the in-situ combustion model observable for analysis, and with another is to convey the main features of this process. The solution of the “running wave” type is considered and the conditions of its implementation are specified. Selected two modes of reaction trailing front regime in-situ combustion waves: hydrodynamic and kinetic. Numerical simulation of the in-situ combustion wave propagation was carried out with using the thermohydrodynamical simulator developed for the numerical integration of non-isothermal multicomponent filtration flows accompanied by phase transitions and chemical reaction.

Parallel implementation of numerical algorithm of solving coupled internal ballistics modelling problem for solid rocket motors
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 1, pp. 47-65

We present a physico-mathematical statement of coupled geometrical and gas dynamics problem of intrachamber processes simulation and calculation of main internal ballistics characteristics of solid rocket motors in axisymmetric approximation. Method and numerical algorithm of solving the problem are described in this paper. We track the propellant burning surface using the level set method. This method allows us to implicitly represent the surface on a fixed Cartesian grid as zero-level of some function. Two-dimensional gas-dynamics equations describe a flow of combustion products in a solid rocket motor. Due to inconsistency of domain boundaries and nodes of computational grid, presence of ghost points lying outside the computational domain is taken into account. For setting the values of flow parameters in ghost points, we use the inverse Lax – Wendroff procedure. We discretize spatial derivatives of level set and gas-dynamics equations with standard WENO schemes of fifth and third-order respectively and time derivatives using total variation diminishing Runge –Kutta methods. We parallelize the presented numerical algorithm using CUDA technology and further optimize it with regard to peculiarities of graphics processors architecture.

Created software package is used for calculating internal ballistics characteristics of nozzleless solid rocket motor during main firing phase. On the base of obtained numerical results, we discuss efficiency of parallelization using CUDA technology and applying considered optimizations. It has been shown that implemented parallelization technique leads to a significant acceleration in comparison with central processes. Distributions of key parameters of combustion products flow in different periods of time have been presented in this paper. We make a comparison of obtained results between quasione-dimensional approach and developed numerical technique.

  6. The mathematical model, finite-difference schemes and algorithms for computation of transient thermoand hydrodynamic processes involved in commissioning the unified system including the oil producing well, electrical submersible pump and fractured-porous reservoir with bottom water are developed. These models are implemented in the computer package to simulate transient processes with simultaneous visualization of their results along with computations. An important feature of the package Oil-RWP is its interaction with the special external program GCS which simulates the work of the surface electric control station and data exchange between these two programs. The package Oil-RWP sends telemetry data and current parameters of the operating submersible unit to the program module GCS (direct coupling). The station controller analyzes incoming data and generates the required control parameters for the submersible pump. These parameters are sent to Oil-RWP (feedback). Such an approach allows us to consider the developed software as the “Intellectual Well System”.

Some principal results of the simulations can be briefly presented as follows. The transient time between inaction and quasi-steady operation of the producing well depends on the well stream watering, filtration and capacitive parameters of oil reservoir, physical-chemical properties of phases and technical characteristics of the submersible unit. For the large time solution of the nonstationary equations governing the nonsteady processes is practically identical to the inverse quasi-stationary problem solution with the same initial data. The developed software package is an effective tool for analysis, forecast and optimization of the exploiting parameters of the unified oil-producing complex during its commissioning into the operating regime.

Numerical simulation of flow inversion in the portal vein
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 3, pp. 659-674

A mathematical model of fluid movement in the portal vein is considered. The fundamental circumstance determining the whole variety of portal hemodynamic phenomena is the absence of a valve apparatus. The flow direction is solely a function of the pressure gradient, and, therefore, it is fundamentally reversible when the boundary conditions of the system change.

Calculations were performed in the area representing a CT image fragment of the portal vein of a particular patient, which does not contain vascular bifurcations. The interpolation of patient Dopplerography data published in the press was used as boundary conditions for the flow. The calculations were carried out using the FlowVision industrial hydrodynamics software package. A comparison of calculations using the ideal fluid model and the Kuemada model of viscoplastic flow is carried out.

Calculations were performed for different values of the resistance coefficient corresponding to the physiological norm and with an increased value of the resistance coefficient.

At a normal value of the resistance coefficient, the flow in the portal vein is characterized by strong convective mixing.

As a result of calculations, it was found that when using the Kuemada model, the flow in the portal vein is stratified. The nature of the stratification depends on the hematocrit. At a normal value of the resistance coefficient, a plastic core of the flow is formed as the velocity decreases. With an increased value of the resistance coefficient during flow inversion, the flow core is also formed. When the flow is inverted, the plastic core continues to move in the forward direction, while the wall layers of the liquid begin to move in the opposite direction.

It is noted that in order to obtain correct modeling results, it is necessary to refine the blood composition of the portal vein and, possibly, refine the rheological model. Such information can be obtained both from comparing simulation data with clinical data, and by laboratory examination of portal vein blood.

Method for coronary blood flow velocity estimation based on angiographic images
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 3, pp. 715-735

In modern cardiology, accurate assessment of the functional significance of coronary artery stenoses is a critical factor for selecting treatment strategies and making informed clinical decisions. This paper presents an automated algorithm for processing dynamic X-ray angiographic image sequences aimed at estimating blood flow velocity. This parameter serves as the basis for determining the Quantitative Flow Ratio (QFR), which acts as an effective noninvasive alternative to traditional invasive fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurements. The proposed methodology successfully overcomes classic challenges of angiographic analysis, such as vessel motion artifacts during the cardio-respiratory cycle, variable contrast opacification, and the geometric complexity of the vascular tree in two-dimensional projections.

The presented processing workflow includes several key stages. Initially, frame preprocessing is performed to suppress noise and filter out the anatomical background. Subsequently, segmentation is implemented using a Sato filter and Otsu thresholding, followed by skeletonization to extract vessel centerlines. Particular attention is paid to the algorithm for automated identification of bifurcation points and the filtration of artifactual intersections caused by vessel overlapping. To ensure data continuity, a temporal tracking method for the target segment based on template correlation is applied, which is especially important during phases with low contrast agent concentration. The mathematical core of the algorithm is based on solving a 1D inverse problem for the advection-diffusion equation, allowing for the recovery of blood flow velocity from temporal intensity curves.

As part of the study, a detailed validation of the method was conducted by comparing automated calculation results with manual expert measurements across ten clinical datasets. The results confirm the robustness of the computational scheme within physiologically relevant ranges and its ability to significantly reduce inter-observer variability. The developed approach minimizes the need for physician intervention in the data processing stage, opening up prospects for creating real-time clinical decision support systems in the catheterization laboratory setting.

Analysis of the identifiability of the mathematical model of propane pyrolysis
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 5, pp. 1045-1057

The article presents the numerical modeling and study of the kinetic model of propane pyrolysis. The study of the reaction kinetics is a necessary stage in modeling the dynamics of the gas flow in the reactor.

The kinetic model of propane pyrolysis is a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations of the first order with parameters, the role of which is played by the reaction rate constants. Math modeling of processes is based on the use of the mass conservation law. To solve an initial (forward) problem, implicit methods for solving stiff ordinary differential equation systems are used. The model contains 60 input kinetic parameters and 17 output parameters corresponding to the reaction substances, of which only 9 are observable. In the process of solving the problem of estimating parameters (inverse problem), there is a question of non-uniqueness of the set of parameters that satisfy the experimental data. Therefore, before solving the inverse problem, the possibility of determining the parameters of the model is analyzed (analysis of identifiability).

To analyze identifiability, we use the orthogonal method, which has proven itself well for analyzing models with a large number of parameters. The algorithm is based on the analysis of the sensitivity matrix by the methods of differential and linear algebra, which shows the degree of dependence of the unknown parameters of the models on the given measurements. The analysis of sensitivity and identifiability showed that the parameters of the model are stably determined from a given set of experimental data. The article presents a list of model parameters from most to least identifiable. Taking into account the analysis of the identifiability of the mathematical model, restrictions were introduced on the search for less identifiable parameters when solving the inverse problem.

The inverse problem of estimating the parameters was solved using a genetic algorithm. The article presents the found optimal values of the kinetic parameters. A comparison of the experimental and calculated dependences of the concentrations of propane, main and by-products of the reaction on temperature for different flow rates of the mixture is presented. The conclusion about the adequacy of the constructed mathematical model is made on the basis of the correspondence of the results obtained to physicochemical laws and experimental data.

Personalization of mathematical models in cardiology: obstacles and perspectives
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 4, pp. 911-930

Most biomechanical tasks of interest to clinicians can be solved only using personalized mathematical models. Such models allow to formalize and relate key pathophysiological processes, basing on clinically available data evaluate non-measurable parameters that are important for the diagnosis of diseases, predict the result of a therapeutic or surgical intervention. The use of models in clinical practice imposes additional restrictions: clinicians require model validation on clinical cases, the speed and automation of the entire calculated technological chain, from processing input data to obtaining a result. Limitations on the simulation time, determined by the time of making a medical decision (of the order of several minutes), imply the use of reduction methods that correctly describe the processes under study within the framework of reduced models or machine learning tools.

Personalization of models requires patient-oriented parameters, personalized geometry of a computational domain and generation of a computational mesh. Model parameters are estimated by direct measurements, or methods of solving inverse problems, or methods of machine learning. The requirement of personalization imposes severe restrictions on the number of fitted parameters that can be measured under standard clinical conditions. In addition to parameters, the model operates with boundary conditions that must take into account the patient’s characteristics. Methods for setting personalized boundary conditions significantly depend on the clinical setting of the problem and clinical data. Building a personalized computational domain through segmentation of medical images and generation of the computational grid, as a rule, takes a lot of time and effort due to manual or semi-automatic operations. Development of automated methods for setting personalized boundary conditions and segmentation of medical images with the subsequent construction of a computational grid is the key to the widespread use of mathematical modeling in clinical practice.

The aim of this work is to review our solutions for personalization of mathematical models within the framework of three tasks of clinical cardiology: virtual assessment of hemodynamic significance of coronary artery stenosis, calculation of global blood flow after hemodynamic correction of complex heart defects, calculating characteristics of coaptation of reconstructed aortic valve.
