Continuum deployable shells made of thin plates
Computer Research and Modeling, 2011, v. 3, no. 1, pp. 3-29Citations: 3 (RSCI).This paper covers deployable systems assembled from trapezium plates. When the plate package is unwrapped, a net shell with six loop cells is formed. It is proved that additional degrees of freedom appear in case of certain correlation between the sizes of the six loop faces. When thin plates were used, the continuum approximation of the deployed net could be interpreted as a shell with a wide variety of local curvatures. Kinematics of the continuum model is analyzed by the method of Cartan moving hedron. Mechanical behavior of continuum nets is studied when cylindrical hinges between the plates are completed of shape memory plastic materials. The paper researches into shell transformations from one stable form to the other. Various practical applications of the continuum nets are demonstrated.

Mathematical modeling of bending of a circular plate using $S$-splines
Computer Research and Modeling, 2015, v. 7, no. 5, pp. 977-988Views (last year): 4.This article is dedicated to the use of higher degree $S$-splines for solving equations of the elasticity theory. As an example we consider the solution to the equation of bending of a plate on a circle. $S$-spline is a piecewise-polynomial function. Its coefficients are defined by two conditions. The first part of the coefficients are defined by the smoothness of the spline. The rest are determined using the least-squares method. We consider class $C^4$ 7th degree $S$-splines.

A surrogate neural network method for restoring the flow field from a homogeneous field by iterations in calculations of steady turbulent flows
Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 2, pp. 179-197In recent years, the use of neural network models for solving aerodynamics problems has become widespread. These models, trained on a set of previously obtained solutions, predict solutions to new problems. They are, in essence, interpolation algorithms. An alternative approach is to construct a neural network operator. This is a neural network that reproduces a numerical method used to solve a problem. It allows to find the solution in iterations. The paper considers the construction of such an operator using the UNet neural network with a spatial attention mechanism. It solves flow problems on a rectangular uniform grid that is common to a streamlined body and flow field. A correction mechanism is proposed to clarify the obtained solution. The problem of the stability of such an algorithm for solving a stationary problem is analyzed, and a comparison is made with other variants of its construction, including pushforward trick and positional encoding. The issue of selecting a set of iterations for forming a train dataset is considered, and the behavior of the solution is assessed using repeated use of a neural network operator.
A demonstration of the method is provided for the case of flow around a rounded plate with a turbulent flow, with various options for rounding, for fixed parameters of the incoming flow, with Reynolds number $\text{Re} = 10^5$ and Mach number $M = 0.15$. Since flows with these parameters of the incoming flow can be considered incompressible, only velocity components are directly studied. At the same time, the neural network model used to construct the operator has a common decoder for both velocity components. Comparison of flow fields and velocity profiles along the normal and outline of the body, obtained using a neural network operator and numerical methods, is carried out. Analysis is performed both on the plate and rounding. Simulation results confirm that the neural network operator allows finding a solution with high accuracy and stability.

The paper demonstrates a fractal system of thin plates connected with hinges. The system can be studied using the methods of mechanics of solids with internal degrees of freedom. The structure is deployable — initially it is close to a small diameter one-dimensional manifold that occupies significant volume after deployment. The geometry of solids is studied using the method of the moving hedron. The relations enabling to define the geometry of the introduced manifolds are derived based on the Cartan structure equations. The proof substantially makes use of the fact that the fractal consists of thin plates that are not long compared to the sizes of the system. The mechanics is described for the solids with rigid plastic hinges between the plates, when the hinges are made of shape memory material. Based on the ultimate load theorems, estimates are performed to specify internal pressure that is required to deploy the package into a three-dimensional structure, and heat input needed to return the system into its initial state.

Model of mantle convection in a zone of a complete subduction cycle
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 6, pp. 1385-1398A 2D numerical model of the immersion of a cold oceanic plate into the thickness of the Earth’s upper mantle has been developed, where the stage of the initial immersion of the plate is preceded by the establishment of a regime of thermogravitational convection of the mantle substance. The model approximation of the mantle is a two-dimensional image of an incompressible Newtonian quasi-liquid in a Cartesian coordinate system, where, due to the high viscosity of the medium, the equations of mantle convection are accepted in the Stokes approximation. It is assumed that seawater that has leaked here enters the first horizons of the mantle together with the plate. With depth, the increase in pressure and temperature leads to certain losses of its light fractions and fluids, losses of water and gases of water-containing minerals of the plate, restructuring of their crystal lattice and, as a consequence, phase transformations. These losses cause an increase in the plate density and an uneven distribution of stresses along the plate (the initial sections of the plate are denser), which subsequently, together with the effect of mantle currents on the plate, causes its fragmentation. The state of mantle convection is considered when the plate and its individual fragments have descended to the bottom of the upper mantle. Computational schemes for solving the model equations have been developed. Mantle convection calculations are performed in terms of the Stokes approximation for vorticity and the stream function, and SPH is used to calculate the state and subsidence of the plate. A number of computational experiments have been performed. It is shown that fragmentation of the plate occurs due to the effect of mantle convection on the plate and the development of inhomogeneous stress fields along the plate. Following the equations of the model, the time of the final stage of subduction is estimated, i.e. the time of the entire oceanic plate reaching the bottom of the upper mantle. In geodynamics, this process is determined by the collision of plates that immediately follows subduction and is usually considered as the final stage of the Wilson cycle (i. e., the cycle of development of folded belts).

Latticed deployable shells made of strips assembled from trapezoid plates
Computer Research and Modeling, 2012, v. 4, no. 1, pp. 63-73Views (last year): 1. Citations: 3 (RSCI).This paper covers deployable systems assembled from a set of trapezium plates. The middles lines of the plates represent a plane curve in the original position of the package. It is proved that when the package of thin plates is unwrapped, a surface approximating a shell of nearly any curvature is formed. Kinematics of the continual model is analyzed by the method of Cartan moving hedron, extending the results the authors published earlier. Various applications of rotating shells are shown. Experimental models of deployable latticed systems are demonstrated.

Investigation the material properties of a plate by laser ultrasound using the analysis of multiple waves
Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 4, pp. 653-673Views (last year): 3.Ultrasound examination of material properties is a precision method for determining their elastic and strength properties in connection with the small wavelength formed in the material after impact of a laser beam. In this paper, the wave processes arising during these measurements are considered in detail. It is shown that full-wave numerical modeling allows us to study in detail the types of waves, topological characteristics of their profile, speed of arrival of waves at various points, identification the types of waves whose measurements are most optimal for examining a sample made of a specific material of a particular shape, and to develop measurement procedures.
To carry out full-wave modeling, a grid-characteristic method on structured grids was used in this work and a hyperbolic system of equations that describes the propagation of elastic waves in the material of the thin plate under consideration on a specific example of a ratio of thickness to width of 1:10 was solved.
To simulate an elastic front that arose in the plate due to a laser beam, a model of the corresponding initial conditions was proposed. A comparison of the wave effects that arise during its use in the case of a point source and with the data of physical experiments on the propagation of laser ultrasound in metal plates was made.
A study was made on the basis of which the characteristic topological features of the wave processes under consideration were identified and revealed. The main types of elastic waves arising due to a laser beam are investigated, the possibility of their use for studying the properties of materials is analyzed. A method based on the analysis of multiple waves is proposed. The proposed method for studying the properties of a plate with the help of multiple waves on synthetic data was tested, and it showed good results.
It should be noted that most of the studies of multiple waves are aimed at developing methods for their suppression. Multiple waves are not used to process the results of ultrasound studies due to the complexity of their detection in the recorded data of a physical experiment.
Due to the use of full wave modeling and analysis of spatial dynamic wave processes, multiple waves are considered in detail in this work and it is proposed to divide materials into three classes, which allows using multiple waves to obtain information about the material of the plate.
The main results of the work are the developed problem statements for the numerical simulation of the study of plates of a finite thickness by laser ultrasound; the revealed features of the wave phenomena arising in plates of a finite thickness; the developed method for studying the properties of the plate on the basis of multiple waves; the developed classification of materials.
The results of the studies presented in this paper may be of interest not only for developments in the field of ultrasonic non-destructive testing, but also in the field of seismic exploration of the earth's interior, since the proposed approach can be extended to more complex cases of heterogeneous media and applied in geophysics.

Modeling of gas mixture separation in a multistage micropump based on the solution of the Boltzmann equation
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 6, pp. 1417-1432The paper simulates a mixture of gases in a multi-stage micro-pump and evaluates its effectiveness at separating the components of the mixture. A device in the form of a long channel with a series of transverse plates is considered. A temperature difference between the sides of the plates induces a radiometric gas flow within the device, and the differences in masses of the gases lead to differences in flow velocities and to the separation of the mixture. Modeling is based on the numerical solution of the Boltzmann kinetic equation, for which a splitting scheme is used, i. e., the advection equation and the relaxation problem are solved separately in alternation. The calculation of the collision integral is performed using the conservative projection method. This method ensures the strict fulfillment of the laws of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy, as well as the important asymptotic property of the equality of the integral of the Maxwell function to zero. Explicit first-order and second-order TVD-schemes are used to solve the advection equation. The calculations were performed for a neon-argon mixture using a model of solid spheres with real molecular diameters and masses. Software has been developed to allow calculations on personal computers and cluster systems. The use of parallelization leads to faster computation and constant time per iteration for devices of different sizes, enabling the modeling of large particle systems. It was found that the value of mixture separation, i. e. the ratio of densities at the ends of the device linearly depends on the number of cascades in the device, which makes it possible to estimate separation for multicascade systems, computer modeling of which is impossible. Flows and distributions of gas inside the device during its operation were analyzed. It was demonstrated that devices of this kind with a sufficiently large number of plates are suitable for the separation of gas mixtures, given that they have no moving parts and are quite simple in manufacture and less subject to wear.

Estimation of natural frequencies of pure bending vibrations of composite nonlinearly elastic beams and circular plates
Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 6, pp. 945-953Views (last year): 14.In the paper, it is represented a linearization method for the stress-strain curves of nonlinearly deformable beams and circular plates in order to generalize the pure bending vibration equations. It is considered composite, on average isotropic prismatic beams of a constant rectangular cross-section and circular plates of a constant thickness made of nonlinearly elastic materials. The technique consists in determining the approximate Young’s moduli from the initial stress-strain state of beam and plate subjected to the action of the bending moment.
The paper proposes two criteria for linearization: the equality of the specific potential energy of deformation and the minimization of the standard deviation in the state equation approximation. The method allows obtaining in the closed form the estimated value of the natural frequencies of layered and structurally heterogeneous, on average isotropic nonlinearly elastic beams and circular plates. This makes it possible to significantly reduce the resources in the vibration analysis and modeling of these structural elements. In addition, the paper shows that the proposed linearization criteria allow to estimate the natural frequencies with the same accuracy.
Since in the general case even isotropic materials exhibit different resistance to tension and compression, it is considered the piecewise-linear Prandtl’s diagrams with proportionality limits and tangential Young’s moduli that differ under tension and compression as the stress-strain curves of the composite material components. As parameters of the stress-strain curve, it is considered the effective Voigt’s characteristics (under the hypothesis of strain homogeneity) for a longitudinally layered material structure; the effective Reuss’ characteristics (under the hypothesis of strain homogeneity) for a transversely layered beam and an axially laminated plate. In addition, the effective Young’s moduli and the proportionality limits, obtained by the author’s homogenization method, are given for a structurally heterogeneous, on average isotropic material. As an example, it is calculated the natural frequencies of two-phase beams depending on the component concentrations.
