Using feedback functions to solve parametric programming problems
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 5, pp. 1125-1151

We consider a finite-dimensional optimization problem, the formulation of which in addition to the required variables contains parameters. The solution to this problem is a dependence of optimal values of variables on parameters. In general, these dependencies are not functions because they can have ambiguous meanings and in the functional case be nondifferentiable. In addition, their domain of definition may be narrower than the domains of definition of functions in the condition of the original problem. All these properties make it difficult to solve both the original parametric problem and other tasks, the statement of which includes these dependencies. To overcome these difficulties, usually methods such as non-differentiable optimization are used.

This article proposes an alternative approach that makes it possible to obtain solutions to parametric problems in a form devoid of the specified properties. It is shown that such representations can be explored using standard algorithms, based on the Taylor formula. This form is a function smoothly approximating the solution of the original problem for any parameter values, specified in its statement. In this case, the value of the approximation error is controlled by a special parameter. Construction of proposed approximations is performed using special functions that establish feedback (within optimality conditions for the original problem) between variables and Lagrange multipliers. This method is described for linear problems with subsequent generalization to the nonlinear case.

From a computational point of view the construction of the approximation consists in finding the saddle point of the modified Lagrange function of the original problem. Moreover, this modification is performed in a special way using feedback functions. It is shown that the necessary conditions for the existence of such a saddle point are similar to the conditions of the Karush – Kuhn – Tucker theorem, but do not contain constraints such as inequalities and conditions of complementary slackness. Necessary conditions for the existence of a saddle point determine this approximation implicitly. Therefore, to calculate its differential characteristics, the implicit function theorem is used. The same theorem is used to reduce the approximation error to an acceptable level.

Features of the practical implementation feedback function method, including estimates of the rate of convergence to the exact solution are demonstrated for several specific classes of parametric optimization problems. Specifically, tasks searching for the global extremum of functions of many variables and the problem of multiple extremum (maximin-minimax) are considered. Optimization problems that arise when using multicriteria mathematical models are also considered. For each of these classes, there are demo examples.

  2. This article explores a method of machine learning based on the theory of random functions. One of the main problems of this method is that decision rule of a model becomes more complicated as the number of training dataset examples increases. The decision rule of the model is the most probable realization of a random function and it's represented as a polynomial with the number of terms equal to the number of training examples. In this article we will show the quick way of the number of training dataset examples reduction and, accordingly, the complexity of the decision rule. Reducing the number of examples of training dataset is due to the search and removal of weak elements that have little effect on the final form of the decision function, and noise sampling elements. For each (xi,yi)-th element sample was introduced the concept of value, which is expressed by the deviation of the estimated value of the decision function of the model at the point xi, built without the i-th element, from the true value yi. Also we show the possibility of indirect using weak elements in the process of training model without increasing the number of terms in the decision function. At the experimental part of the article, we show how changed amount of data affects to the ability of the method of generalizing in the classification task.

Four-factor computing experiment for the random walk on a two-dimensional square field
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 6, pp. 905-918

Nowadays the random search became a widespread and effective tool for solving different complex optimization and adaptation problems. In this work, the problem of an average duration of a random search for one object by another is regarded, depending on various factors on a square field. The problem solution was carried out by holding total experiment with 4 factors and orthogonal plan with 54 lines. Within each line, the initial conditions and the cellular automaton transition rules were simulated and the duration of the search for one object by another was measured. As a result, the regression model of average duration of a random search for an object depending on the four factors considered, specifying the initial positions of two objects, the conditions of their movement and detection is constructed. The most significant factors among the factors considered in the work that determine the average search time are determined. An interpretation is carried out in the problem of random search for an object from the constructed model. The important result of the work is that the qualitative and quantitative influence of initial positions of objects, the size of the lattice and the transition rules on the average duration of search is revealed by means of model obtained. It is shown that the initial neighborhood of objects on the lattice does not guarantee a quick search, if each of them moves. In addition, it is quantitatively estimated how many times the average time of searching for an object can increase or decrease with increasing the speed of the searching object by 1 unit, and also with increasing the field size by 1 unit, with different initial positions of the two objects. The exponential nature of the growth in the number of steps for searching for an object with an increase in the lattice size for other fixed factors is revealed. The conditions for the greatest increase in the average search duration are found: the maximum distance of objects in combination with the immobility of one of them when the field size is changed by 1 unit. (that is, for example, with 4×4 at 5×5) can increase the average search duration in e1.695.42. The task presented in the work may be relevant from the point of view of application both in the landmark for ensuring the security of the state, and, for example, in the theory of mass service.

Mirror descent for constrained optimization problems with large subgradient values of functional constraints
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 2, pp. 301-317

The paper is devoted to the problem of minimization of the non-smooth functional f with a non-positive non-smooth Lipschitz-continuous functional constraint. We consider the formulation of the problem in the case of quasi-convex functionals. We propose new strategies of step-sizes and adaptive stopping rules in Mirror Descent for the considered class of problems. It is shown that the methods are applicable to the objective functionals of various levels of smoothness. Applying a special restart technique to the considered version of Mirror Descent there was proposed an optimal method for optimization problems with strongly convex objective functionals. Estimates of the rate of convergence for the considered methods are obtained depending on the level of smoothness of the objective functional. These estimates indicate the optimality of the considered methods from the point of view of the theory of lower oracle bounds. In particular, the optimality of our approach for Höldercontinuous quasi-convex (sub)differentiable objective functionals is proved. In addition, the case of a quasiconvex objective functional and functional constraint was considered. In this paper, we consider the problem of minimizing a non-smooth functional f in the presence of a Lipschitz-continuous non-positive non-smooth functional constraint g, and the problem statement in the cases of quasi-convex and strongly (quasi-)convex functionals is considered separately. The paper presents numerical experiments demonstrating the advantages of using the considered methods.

Discrete simulation of the road restoration process
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 6, pp. 1255-1268

This work contains a description of the results of modeling the process of maintaining the readiness of a section of the road network under strikes of with specified parameters. A one-dimensional section of road up to 40 km long with a total number of strikes up to 100 during the work of the brigade is considered. A simulation model has been developed for carrying out work to maintain it in working condition by several groups (engineering teams) that are part of the engineering and road division. A multicopter-type unmanned aerial vehicle is used to search for the points of appearance of obstacles. Life cycle schemes of the main participants of the tactical scene have been developed and an event-driven model of the tactical scene has been built. The format of the event log generated as a result of simulation modeling of the process of maintaining a road section is proposed. To visualize the process of maintaining the readiness of a road section, it is proposed to use visualization in the cyclogram format.

An XSL style has been developed for building a cyclogram based on an event log. As an algorithm for making a decision on the assignment of barriers to brigades, the simplest algorithm has been adopted, prescribing choosing the nearest barrier. A criterion describing the effectiveness of maintenance work on the site based on the assessment of the average speed of vehicles on the road section is proposed. Graphs of the dependence of the criterion value and the root-meansquare error depending on the length of the maintained section are plotted and an estimate is obtained for the maximum length of the road section maintained in a state of readiness with specified values for the selected quality indicator with specified characteristics of striking and performance of repair crews. The expediency of carrying out work to maintain readiness by several brigades that are part of the engineering and road division operating autonomously is shown.

The influence of the speed of the unmanned aerial vehicle on the ability to maintain the readiness of the road section is analyzed. The speed range for from 10 to 70 km/h is considered, which corresponds to the technical capabilities of multicoptertype reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles. The simulation results can be used as part of a complex simulation model of an army offensive or defensive operation and for solving the problem of optimizing the assignment of tasks to maintain the readiness of road sections to engineering and road brigades. The proposed approach may be of interest for the development of military-oriented strategy games.

Parametric identification of dynamic systems based on external interval estimates of phase variables
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 2, pp. 299-314

An important role in the construction of mathematical models of dynamic systems is played by inverse problems, which in particular include the problem of parametric identification. Unlike classical models that operate with point values, interval models give upper and lower boundaries on the quantities under study. The paper considers an interpolation approach to solving interval problems of parametric identification of dynamic systems for the case when experimental data are represented by external interval estimates. The purpose of the proposed approach is to find such an interval estimate of the model parameters, in which the external interval estimate of the solution of the direct modeling problem would contain experimental data or minimize the deviation from them. The approach is based on the adaptive interpolation algorithm for modeling dynamic systems with interval uncertainties, which makes it possible to explicitly obtain the dependence of phase variables on system parameters. The task of minimizing the distance between the experimental data and the model solution in the space of interval boundaries of the model parameters is formulated. An expression for the gradient of the objectivet function is obtained. On a representative set of tasks, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated.

Solving traveling salesman problem via clustering and a new algorithm for merging tours
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 1, pp. 45-58

Traditional methods for solving the traveling salesman problem are not effective for high-dimensional problems due to their high computational complexity. One of the most effective ways to solve this problem is the decomposition approach, which includes three main stages: clustering vertices, solving subproblems within each cluster and then merging the obtained solutions into a final solution. This article focuses on the third stage — merging cycles of solving subproblems — since this stage is not always given sufficient attention, which leads to less accurate final solutions of the problem. The paper proposes a new modified Sigal algorithm for merging cycles. To evaluate its effectiveness, it is compared with two algorithms for merging cycles — the method of connecting midpoints of edges and an algorithm based on closeness of cluster centroids. The dependence of quality of solving subproblems on algorithms used for merging cycles is investigated. Sigal’s modified algorithm performs pairwise clustering and minimizes total distance. The centroid method focuses on connecting clusters based on closeness of centroids, and an algorithm using mid-points estimates the distance between mid-points of edges. Two types of clustering — k-means and affinity propagation — were also considered. Numerical experiments were performed using the TSPLIB dataset with different numbers of cities and topologies to test effectiveness of proposed algorithm. The study analyzes errors caused by the order in which clusters were merged, the quality of solving subtasks and number of clusters. Experiments show that the modified Sigal algorithm has the smallest median final distance and the most stable results compared to other methods. Results indicate that the quality of the final solution obtained using the modified Sigal algorithm is more stable depending on the sequence of merging clusters. Improving the quality of solving subproblems usually results in linear improvement of the final solution, but the pooling algorithm rarely affects the degree of this improvement.

    Computer Research and Modeling, 2009, v. 1, no. 4, pp. 391-403

The approach given in this work helps to organize the operative control over action intensity of pollution emissions in atmosphere. The approach allows to sequential estimate of unknown intensity of atmospheric pollution source on the base of concentration measurements of impurity in several stationary control points is offered in the work. The inverse problem was solved by means of the step-by-step regularization and the sequential function specification method. The solution is presented in the form of the digital filter in terms of Hamming. The fitting algorithm of regularization parameter r for function specification method is described.

A New Method For Point Estimating Parameters Of Simple Regression
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2014, v. 6, no. 1, pp. 57-77

A new method is described for finding parameters of univariate regression model: the greatest cosine method. Implementation of the method involves division of regression model parameters into two groups. The first group of parameters responsible for the angle between the experimental data vector and the regression model vector are defined by the maximum of the cosine of the angle between these vectors. The second group includes the scale factor. It is determined by means of “straightening” the relationship between the experimental data vector and the regression model vector. The interrelation of the greatest cosine method with the method of least squares is examined. Efficiency of the method is illustrated by examples.

Local estimations of Monte Carlo method with the object spectral representation in the solution of global illumination
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2012, v. 4, no. 1, pp. 75-84

The article deals with the local and double local estimation of the Monte Carlo method for solving the equation of global illumination. The local estimation allows calculating the illumination at any point at the approximation of diffuse reflection, whereas the double local estimation allows calculating directly the luminance at a given point in a given direction. The article presents the mathematical basis of local estimations and the basic stages of the software implementation. The representation of three-dimensional objects in the basis of spherical functions and the possibility of using them in the local estimations are also considered.
