Excitation patterns in the networks of inhibitory and excitatory neurons in the model of the neuroglial-vascular unit
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 2, pp. 439-461

Numerous contemporary studies confirm that neurons, astrocytes and blood vessels function as a unified dynamic system. Consequently, the concept of the integrated neurogliovascular unit (NGVU), encompassing these components, has emerged and gained significant traction in recent years. According to this framework, normal brain function relies on a broad complex of interactions between NGVU elements, while the disruption of these links may underlie various neuropathologies. Understanding the processes within a single NGVU, as well as the organization of connections between multiple units, is a prerequisite for successful diagnosis and therapy of neurological disorders.

In this work, we developed an NGVU model that, for the first time, integrates a detailed description of synaptically coupled excitatory and inhibitory neuronal networks (accounting for the E/I balance), extracellular environment dynamics (potassium, glutamate, GABA), and norepinephrine-modulated astrocytic activity, with subsequent regulation of local blood flow.

A key conceptual feature of the model is the integration of multiscale processes — ranging from ion dynamics at the level of individual Hodgkin – Huxley neurons to substance diffusion across a network of 100 NGVUs — into a single system of coupled nonlinear differential equations. This approach enabled the investigation of the ensemble’s collective dynamics and the identification of novel functional regimes.

Numerical experiments established that extracellular potassium dynamics and positive feedback play a decisive role in the formation of stable spatial excitation structures. It is shown that under local stimulation, activity remains confined due to potassium diffusion outflow; however, supercritical excitation initiates self-sustaining autowave regimes. The stabilization of these regimes leads to the formation of spatial patterns morphologically similar to Turing structures. These patterns, characterized by alternating zones of high and low activity, are independent of specific initial conditions but sensitive to parameter variations. This suggests that the system operates in a dynamic instability (chaos) regime, which is consistent with the concept of self-organized criticality of the brain under physiological conditions. The model successfully reproduces experimentally observed phenomena, including bursting and sensitivity to extracellular potassium. The results provide new perspectives for analyzing the pathophysiological mechanisms of brain function.

Discrete network dynamic system for modeling the spread of panic in groups of people
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 2, pp. 483-499

The paper addresses the problem of modeling the formation and propagation of panic states in social groups with relatively stable structures of interpersonal interactions. Panic is interpreted as a nonlinear process of emotional contagion arising from the interaction between individual psychological characteristics and collective effects within a social environment. In contrast to models focused on the spatial dynamics of moving crowds, the proposed approach concentrates on quasi-stationary interaction networks that reflect informational and emotional contacts among individuals.

The developed discrete network dynamical system integrates individual temperament parameters (sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic, melancholic), the structure of social connections, and nonlinear mechanisms of collective behavior. The individual dynamics of panic are described using an S-shaped growth function, which ensures boundedness of the emotional arousal level and captures the stages of its formation and saturation. Social influence is modeled on a graph of interpersonal interactions (an Erdos –Renyi random network) through local contacts between individuals.

Additionally, the model incorporates the effects of collective contagion and avalanche-like amplification driven by the average panic level in the group, as well as a baseline stress factor depending on group size. Numerical simulation is implemented in a discrete iterative form, allowing for the analysis of both individual and group panic trajectories. A quantitative indicator of the panic propagation rate is introduced, defined by the time required for the group to reach a state close to full panic.

A comparative analysis of heterogeneous and homogeneous groups is conducted, demonstrating that group heterogeneity significantly accelerates panic propagation due to inter-temperament interactions: highly excitable individuals act as initiators of emotional contagion, while more stable individuals partially dampen its dynamics. The evaluation of the model quality using the coefficient of determination shows a high degree of consistency within the simulation data.

The practical significance of the work lies in the potential application of the model for analyzing the resilience of social groups to panic states, assessing risks at mass events, and developing intelligent systems for monitoring collective behavior. Future research directions include extending the model to account for directed and dynamic networks, as well as its calibration based on empirical data.

Statistical analysis and modeling of olfactory bulb activation patterns using unmarked spatial point processes
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 4, pp. 1005-1019

In neuroscience, the study of odor coding mechanisms requires the analysis of spatial activation patterns of olfactory structures (glomeruli) reconstructed from multiphoton microscopy data. However, the lack of a formal statistical framework for analyzing population-level summary maps limits result reproducibility and hinders the development of predictive models. To address these limitations, we developed a novel methodology for the analysis of olfactory activity maps aggregated across multiple animals, based on the theory of unmarked spatial point processes. The methodology includes a data preprocessing procedure and a numerical analysis algorithm implemented in the R environment using the spatstat package.

The proposed approach enables: (1) transformation of raw glomerular activity maps into point patterns while preserving information about glomerular sizes (replacing size information with local point density is a methodological compromise reflecting the “functional weight” of glomerular input); (2) analysis of point patterns based on spatial morphometric characteristics of domains — regions of stable glomerular activation in the olfactory bulb, each approximated by an ellipse, with ellipse parameters (center coordinates in stereotaxic space, major and minor axis lengths, orientation angles), areas, and intra-ellipse point densities reflecting odorant-specific response signatures; (3) statistical hypothesis testing for spatial randomness (Complete Spatial Randomness) using Ripley’s $K$-function, the nearest-neighbor G-function, and Monte Carlo simulations; (4) synthesis of a parametric pairwise interaction model (Strauss process), whose parameters $(r_{PI}, \gamma)$ have a clear biological interpretation — the spatial interaction scale of glomeruli and the strength of response comodulation, respectively.

The methodology was validated using experimental data obtained from 24 laboratory rats: 10 animals stimulated with camphor and 14 with methyl benzoate. The fitted Strauss models yielded close but odorant-specific parameters: interaction radii $r_{PI}$ of 150 $\mu$m (camphor) and 120 μm (methyl benzoate); interaction parameters $gamma$ of 0.95 and 0.89, respectively. The total domain areas (0.60 mm2 and 0.73 mm2) and point densities (38 and 43 points/mm2) calculated at the first stage of analysis are fully consistent with the parametric signatures $(r_{PI}, \gamma)$ of the Strauss model. Model validation using $Q$-$Q$ plots of smoothed residuals confirmed their adequacy.

Our results are consistent with data previously obtained using genetic labeling and functional mapping techniques, demonstrating the correctness of the proposed methodology and the effectiveness of multiphoton laser scanning microscopy for such applications. The proposed framework provides reproducible quantitative assessment of glomerular domains within a unified stereotaxic coordinate system and can be extended to other odorants and biological species. All findings were obtained under anesthesia; extrapolation to active olfactory strategies in awake animals requires further investigation.

Features of social interactions: the basic model
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 6, pp. 1673-1693

The paper considers the basic model of competitive interactions and its use for the analysis and description of social processes. The peculiarity of the model is that it describes the interaction of several competing actors, while actors can vary the strategy of their actions, in particular, form coalitions to jointly counter a common enemy. As a result of modeling, various modes of competitive interaction were identified, their classification was conducted, and their features were described. In the course of the study, the attention is paid to the so-called “rough” (according to A.A. Andronov) cases of the implementation of competitive interaction, which until now have rarely been considered in the scientific literature, but are quite common in real life. Using a basic mathematical model, the conditions for the implementation of various modes of competitive interactions are considered, the conditions for the transition from one mode to another are determined, examples of the implementation of these modes in the economy, social and political life are given. It is shown that with a relatively low level of competition, which is non-antagonistic in nature, competition can lead to an increase in the activity of interacting actors and to overall economic growth. Moreover, in the presence of expanding resource opportunities (as long as such opportunities remain), this growth may have a hyperbolic character. With a decrease in resource capabilities and increased competition, there is a transition to an oscillatory mode, when weaker actors unite to jointly counteract stronger ones. With a further decrease in resource opportunities and increased competition, there is a transition to the formation of stable hierarchical structures. At the same time, the model shows that at a certain moment there is a loss of stability, the system becomes “rough” according to A.A. Andronov and sensitive to fluctuations in parameter changes. As a result, the existing hierarchies may collapse and be replaced by new ones. With a further increase in the intensity of competition, the actor-leader completely suppresses his opponents and establishes monopolism. Examples from economic, social, and political life are given, illustrating the patterns identified on the basis of modeling using the basic model of competition. The obtained results can be used in the analysis, modeling and forecasting of socioeconomic and political processes.

Modeling the number of employed, unemployed and economically inactive population in the Russian Far East
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 1, pp. 251-264

Studies of the crisis socio-demographic situation in the Russian Far East require not only the use of traditional statistical methods, but also a conceptual analysis of possible development scenarios based on the synergy principles. The article is devoted to the analysis and modeling of the number of employed, unemployed and economically inactive population using nonlinear autonomous differential equations. We studied a basic mathematical model that takes into account the principle of pair interactions, which is a special case of the model for the struggle between conditional information of D. S. Chernavsky. The point estimates for the parameters are found using least squares method adapted for this model. The average approximation error was no more than 5.17%. The calculated parameter values correspond to the unstable focus and the oscillations with increasing amplitude of population number in the asymptotic case, which indicates a gradual increase in disparities between the employed, unemployed and economically inactive population and a collapse of their dynamics. We found that in the parametric space, not far from the inertial scenario, there are domains of blow-up and chaotic regimes complicating the ability to effectively manage. The numerical study showed that a change in only one model parameter (e.g. migration) without complex structural socio-economic changes can only delay the collapse of the dynamics in the long term or leads to the emergence of unpredictable chaotic regimes. We found an additional set of the model parameters corresponding to sustainable dynamics (stable focus) which approximates well the time series of the considered population groups. In the mathematical model, the bifurcation parameters are the outflow rate of the able-bodied population, the fertility (“rejuvenation of the population”), as well as the migration inflow rate of the unemployed. We found that the transition to stable regimes is possible with the simultaneous impact on several parameters which requires a comprehensive set of measures to consolidate the population in the Russian Far East and increase the level of income in terms of compensation for infrastructure sparseness. Further economic and sociological research is required to develop specific state policy measures.

Changepoint detection on financial data using deep learning approach
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 2, pp. 555-575

The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology for change points detection in time series, including financial data. The theoretical basis of the study is based on the pieces of research devoted to the analysis of structural changes in financial markets, description of the proposed algorithms for detecting change points and peculiarities of building classical and deep machine learning models for solving this type of problems. The development of such tools is of interest to investors and other stakeholders, providing them with additional approaches to the effective analysis of financial markets and interpretation of available data.

To address the research objective, a neural network was trained. In the course of the study several ways of training sample formation were considered, differing in the nature of statistical parameters. In order to improve the quality of training and obtain more accurate results, a methodology for feature generation was developed for the formation of features that serve as input data for the neural network. These features, in turn, were derived from an analysis of mathematical expectations and standard deviations of time series data over specific intervals. The potential for combining these features to achieve more stable results is also under investigation.

The results of model experiments were analyzed to compare the effectiveness of the proposed model with other existing changepoint detection algorithms that have gained widespread usage in practical applications. A specially generated dataset, developed using proprietary methods, was utilized as both training and testing data. Furthermore, the model, trained on various features, was tested on daily data from the S&P 500 index to assess its effectiveness in a real financial context.

As the principles of the model’s operation are described, possibilities for its further improvement are considered, including the modernization of the proposed model’s structure, optimization of training data generation, and feature formation. Additionally, the authors are tasked with advancing existing concepts for real-time changepoint detection.

Neural network-based justification of management decisions on city digitalization
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 4, pp. 1053-1070

The modern digitalization of cities occurs according to laws that are not yet clearly defined. The difficulty in understanding these laws is due to the high uncertainty of urban events and the difficulties in developing adequate analytical models for them. To substantiate management decisions on city digitalization in these conditions, effective methods for processing multidimensional time series are necessary. The objective is to develop a promising method. The proposed method is based on a new model of a neural network control system and algorithms for implementing its main functions. Distinctive features of the model include both structural aspects and new rules for neural network-based substantiation of management decisions on city digitalization, using unsupervised training of the applied recurrent neural network. This model provides for adaptive neural network management of city digitalization according to a sliding program. New rules are proposed for the forward and backward transformation of multidimensional time series, modeling the operation of a streaming recurrent neural network, and identifying feasible programs for city digitalization. By adhering to the proposed rules, it is possible not only to eliminate information loss in such a network but also to ensure its stable operation. The features of this neural network’s operation in substantiating feasible urban digitalization programs are described. The requirements for the software implementation of the proposed method are substantiated. The results of experiments using data for St. Petersburg are presented. These data included monthly volumes of shipped computers, electronic and optical products, as well as monthly volumes of shipped products for all manufacturing industries minus the first-time series values ??for the period from January 2021 to December 2025. The effectiveness of management decisions on the city’s digitalization was predicted based on the total volumes of shipped products to the horizon from January to December 2026. It is shown that the application of the proposed method allows for expanded capabilities for adaptively substantiating feasible management decisions on the city’s digitalization while reducing computer modeling costs.
