Parallel implementation of numerical algorithm of solving coupled internal ballistics modelling problem for solid rocket motors
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 1, pp. 47-65

We present a physico-mathematical statement of coupled geometrical and gas dynamics problem of intrachamber processes simulation and calculation of main internal ballistics characteristics of solid rocket motors in axisymmetric approximation. Method and numerical algorithm of solving the problem are described in this paper. We track the propellant burning surface using the level set method. This method allows us to implicitly represent the surface on a fixed Cartesian grid as zero-level of some function. Two-dimensional gas-dynamics equations describe a flow of combustion products in a solid rocket motor. Due to inconsistency of domain boundaries and nodes of computational grid, presence of ghost points lying outside the computational domain is taken into account. For setting the values of flow parameters in ghost points, we use the inverse Lax – Wendroff procedure. We discretize spatial derivatives of level set and gas-dynamics equations with standard WENO schemes of fifth and third-order respectively and time derivatives using total variation diminishing Runge –Kutta methods. We parallelize the presented numerical algorithm using CUDA technology and further optimize it with regard to peculiarities of graphics processors architecture.

Created software package is used for calculating internal ballistics characteristics of nozzleless solid rocket motor during main firing phase. On the base of obtained numerical results, we discuss efficiency of parallelization using CUDA technology and applying considered optimizations. It has been shown that implemented parallelization technique leads to a significant acceleration in comparison with central processes. Distributions of key parameters of combustion products flow in different periods of time have been presented in this paper. We make a comparison of obtained results between quasione-dimensional approach and developed numerical technique.

Method of self-consistent equations in solving problems of wave scattering on systems of cylindrical bodies
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 4, pp. 725-733

One of the numerical methods for solving problems of scattering of electromagnetic waves by systems formed by parallel oriented cylindrical elements — two-dimensional photonic crystals — is considered. The method is based on the classical method of separation of variables for solving the wave equation. Тhe essence of the method is to represent the field as the sum of the primary field and the unknown secondary scattered on the elements of the medium field. The mathematical expression for the latter is written in the form of infinite series in elementary wave functions with unknown coefficients. In particular, the field scattered by N elements is sought as the sum of N diffraction series, in which one of the series is composed of the wave functions of one body, and the wave functions in the remaining series are expressed in terms of the eigenfunctions of the first body using addition theorems. From satisfying the boundary conditions on the surface of each element we obtain systems of linear algebraic equations with an infinite number of unknowns — the required expansion coefficients, which are solved by standard methods. A feature of the method is the use of analytical expressions describing diffraction by a single element of the system. In contrast to most numerical methods, this approach allows one to obtain information on the amplitude-phase or spectral characteristics of the field only at local points of the structure. The absence of the need to determine the field parameters in the entire area of space occupied by the considered multi-element system determines the high efficiency of this method. The paper compares the results of calculating the transmission spectra of two-dimensional photonic crystals by the considered method with experimental data and numerical results obtained using other approaches. Their good agreement is demonstrated.

Development of a methodological approach and numerical simulation of thermal-hydraulic processes in the intermediate heat exchanger of a BN reactor
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 4, pp. 877-894

The paper presents the results of three-dimensional numerical simulation of thermal-hydraulic processes in the Intermediate Heat Exchanger of the advanced Sodium-Cooled Fast-Neutron (BN) Reactor considering a developed methodological approach.

The Intermediate Heat Exchanger (IHX) is located in the reactor vessel and intended to transfer heat from the primary sodium circulating on the shell side to the secondary sodium circulating on the tube side. In case of an integral layout of the primary equipment in the BN reactor, upstream the IHX inlet windows there is a temperature stratification of the coolant due to incomplete mixing of different temperature flows at the core outlet. Inside the IHX, in the area of the input and output windows, a complex longitudinal and transverse flow of the coolant also takes place resulting in an uneven distribution of the coolant flow rate on the tube side and, as a consequence, in an uneven temperature distribution and heat transfer efficiency along the height and radius of the tube bundle.

In order to confirm the thermal-hydraulic parameters of the IHX of the advanced BN reactor applied in the design, a methodological approach for three-dimensional numerical simulation of the heat exchanger located in the reactor vessel was developed, taking into account the three-dimensional sodium flow pattern at the IHX inlet and inside the IHX, as well as justifying the recommendations for simplifying the geometry of the computational model of the IHX.

Numerical simulation of thermal-hydraulic processes in the IHX of the advanced BN reactor was carried out using the FlowVision software package with the standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model and the LMS turbulent heat transfer model.

To increase the representativeness of numerical simulation of the IHX tube bundle, verification calculations of singletube and multi-tube sodium-sodium heat exchangers were performed with the geometric characteristics corresponding to the IHX design.

To determine the input boundary conditions in the IHX model, an additional three-dimensional calculation was performed taking into account the uneven flow pattern in the upper mixing chamber of the reactor.

The IHX computational model was optimized by simplifying spacer belts and selecting a sector model.

As a result of numerical simulation of the IHX, the distributions of the primary sodium velocity and primary and secondary sodium temperature were obtained. Satisfactory agreement of the calculation results with the design data on integral parameters confirmed the adopted design thermal-hydraulic characteristics of the IHX of the advanced BN reactor.

Buckling prediction for shallow convex shells based on the analysis of nonlinear oscillations
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 5, pp. 1189-1205

Buckling problems of thin elastic shells have become relevant again because of the discrepancies between the standards in many countries on how to estimate loads causing buckling of shallow shells and the results of the experiments on thinwalled aviation structures made of high-strength alloys. The main contradiction is as follows: the ultimate internal stresses at shell buckling (collapsing) turn out to be lower than the ones predicted by the adopted design theory used in the USA and European standards. The current regulations are based on the static theory of shallow shells that was put forward in the 1930s: within the nonlinear theory of elasticity for thin-walled structures there are stable solutions that significantly differ from the forms of equilibrium typical to small initial loads. The minimum load (the lowest critical load) when there is an alternative form of equilibrium was used as a maximum permissible one. In the 1970s it was recognized that this approach is unacceptable for complex loadings. Such cases were not practically relevant in the past while now they occur with thinner structures used under complex conditions. Therefore, the initial theory on bearing capacity assessments needs to be revised. The recent mathematical results that proved asymptotic proximity of the estimates based on two analyses (the three-dimensional dynamic theory of elasticity and the dynamic theory of shallow convex shells) could be used as a theory basis. This paper starts with the setting of the dynamic theory of shallow shells that comes down to one resolving integrodifferential equation (once the special Green function is constructed). It is shown that the obtained nonlinear equation allows for separation of variables and has numerous time-period solutions that meet the Duffing equation with “a soft spring”. This equation has been thoroughly studied; its numerical analysis enables finding an amplitude and an oscillation period depending on the properties of the Green function. If the shell is oscillated with the trial time-harmonic load, the movement of the surface points could be measured at the maximum amplitude. The study proposes an experimental set-up where resonance oscillations are generated with the trial load normal to the surface. The experimental measurements of the shell movements, the amplitude and the oscillation period make it possible to estimate the safety factor of the structure bearing capacity with non-destructive methods under operating conditions.

Searching for connections between biological and physico-chemical characteristics of Rybinsk reservoir ecosystem. Part 1. Criteria of connection nonrandomness
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2013, v. 5, no. 1, pp. 83-105

Based on contents of phytoplankton pigments, fluorescence samples and some physico-chemical characteristics of the Rybinsk reservoir waters, searching for connections between biological and physicalchemical characteristics is working out. The standard methods of statistical analysis (correlation, regression), methods of description of connection between qualitative classes of characteristics, based on deviation of the studied characteristics distribution from independent distribution, are studied. A method of searching for boundaries of quality classes by criterion of maximum connection coefficient is offered.

Estimation of natural frequencies of pure bending vibrations of composite nonlinearly elastic beams and circular plates
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 6, pp. 945-953

In the paper, it is represented a linearization method for the stress-strain curves of nonlinearly deformable beams and circular plates in order to generalize the pure bending vibration equations. It is considered composite, on average isotropic prismatic beams of a constant rectangular cross-section and circular plates of a constant thickness made of nonlinearly elastic materials. The technique consists in determining the approximate Young’s moduli from the initial stress-strain state of beam and plate subjected to the action of the bending moment.

The paper proposes two criteria for linearization: the equality of the specific potential energy of deformation and the minimization of the standard deviation in the state equation approximation. The method allows obtaining in the closed form the estimated value of the natural frequencies of layered and structurally heterogeneous, on average isotropic nonlinearly elastic beams and circular plates. This makes it possible to significantly reduce the resources in the vibration analysis and modeling of these structural elements. In addition, the paper shows that the proposed linearization criteria allow to estimate the natural frequencies with the same accuracy.

Since in the general case even isotropic materials exhibit different resistance to tension and compression, it is considered the piecewise-linear Prandtl’s diagrams with proportionality limits and tangential Young’s moduli that differ under tension and compression as the stress-strain curves of the composite material components. As parameters of the stress-strain curve, it is considered the effective Voigt’s characteristics (under the hypothesis of strain homogeneity) for a longitudinally layered material structure; the effective Reuss’ characteristics (under the hypothesis of strain homogeneity) for a transversely layered beam and an axially laminated plate. In addition, the effective Young’s moduli and the proportionality limits, obtained by the author’s homogenization method, are given for a structurally heterogeneous, on average isotropic material. As an example, it is calculated the natural frequencies of two-phase beams depending on the component concentrations.

High-Reynolds number calculations of turbulent heat transfer in FlowVision software
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2018, v. 10, no. 4, pp. 461-481

This work presents the model of heat wall functions FlowVision (WFFV), which allows simulation of nonisothermal flows of fluid and gas near solid surfaces on relatively coarse grids with use of turbulence models. The work follows the research on the development of wall functions applicable in wide range of the values of quantity y+. Model WFFV assumes smooth profiles of the tangential component of velocity, turbulent viscosity, temperature, and turbulent heat conductivity near a solid surface. Possibility of using a simple algebraic model for calculation of variable turbulent Prandtl number is investigated in this study (the turbulent Prandtl number enters model WFFV as parameter). The results are satisfactory. The details of implementation of model WFFV in the FlowVision software are explained. In particular, the boundary condition for the energy equation used in high-Reynolds number calculations of non-isothermal flows is considered. The boundary condition is deduced for the energy equation written via thermodynamic enthalpy and via full enthalpy. The capability of the model is demonstrated on two test problems: flow of incompressible fluid past a plate and supersonic flow of gas past a plate (M = 3).

Analysis of literature shows that there exists essential ambiguity in experimental data and, as a consequence, in empirical correlations for the Stanton number (that being a dimensionless heat flux). The calculations suggest that the default values of the model parameters, automatically specified in the program, allow calculations of heat fluxes at extended solid surfaces with engineering accuracy. At the same time, it is obvious that one cannot invent universal wall functions. For this reason, the controls of model WFFV are made accessible from the FlowVision interface. When it is necessary, a user can tune the model for simulation of the required type of flow.

The proposed model of wall functions is compatible with all the turbulence models implemented in the FlowVision software: the algebraic model of Smagorinsky, the Spalart-Allmaras model, the SST $k-\omega$ model, the standard $k-\varepsilon$ model, the $k-\varepsilon$ model of Abe, Kondoh, Nagano, the quadratic $k-\varepsilon$ model, and $k-\varepsilon$ model FlowVision.

Machine learning interpretation of inter-well radiowave survey data
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 4, pp. 675-684

Traditional geological search methods going to be ineffective. The exploration depth of kimberlite bodies and ore deposits has increased significantly. The only direct exploration method is to drill a system of wells to the depths that provide access to the enclosing rocks. Due to the high cost of drilling, the role of inter-well survey methods has increased. They allows to increase the mean well spacing without significantly reducing the kimberlite or ore body missing probability. The method of inter-well radio wave survey is effective to search for high contrast conductivity objects. The physics of the method based on the dependence of the electromagnetic wave propagation on the propagation medium conductivity. The source and receiver of electromagnetic radiation is an electric dipole, they are placed in adjacent wells. The distance between the source and receiver is known. Therefore we could estimate the medium absorption coefficient by the rate of radio wave amplitude decrease. Low electrical resistance rocks corresponds to high absorption of radio waves. The inter-well measurement data allows to estimate an effective electrical resistance (or conductivity) of the rock. Typically, the source and receiver are immersed in adjacent wells synchronously. The value of the of the electric field amplitude measured at the receiver site allows to estimate the average value of the attenuation coefficient on the line connecting the source and receiver. The measurements are taken during stops, approximately every 5 m. The distance between stops is much less than the distance between adjacent wells. This leads to significant spatial anisotropy in the measured data distribution. Drill grid covers a large area, and our point is to build a three-dimensional model of the distribution of the electrical properties of the inter-well space throughout the whole area. The anisotropy of spatial distribution makes hard to the use of standard geostatistics approach. To build a three-dimensional model of attenuation coefficient, we used one of machine learning theory methods, the method of nearest neighbors. In this method, the value of the absorption coefficient at a given point is calculated by $k$ nearest measurements. The number $k$ should be determined from additional reasons. The spatial distribution anisotropy effect can be reduced by changing the spatial scale in the horizontal direction. The scale factor $\lambda$ is one yet external parameter of the problem. To select the parameters $k$ and $\lambda$ values we used the determination coefficient. To demonstrate the absorption coefficient three-dimensional image construction we apply the procedure to the inter-well radio wave survey data. The data was obtained at one of the sites in Yakutia.

A hybrid regularizers approach based model for restoring image corrupted by Poisson noise
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2021, v. 13, no. 5, pp. 965-978

Image denoising is one of the fundamental problems in digital image processing. This problem usually refers to the reconstruction of an image from an observed image degraded by noise. There are many factors that cause this degradation such as transceiver equipment, or environmental influences, etc. In order to obtain higher quality images, many methods have been proposed for image denoising problem. Most image denoising method are based on total variation (TV) regularization to develop efficient algorithms for solving the related optimization problem. TV-based models have become a standard technique in image restoration with the ability to preserve image sharpness.

In this paper, we focus on Poisson noise usually appearing in photon-counting devices. We propose an effective regularization model based on combination of first-order and fractional-order total variation for image reconstruction corrupted by Poisson noise. The proposed model allows us to eliminate noise while edge preserving. An efficient alternating minimization algorithm is employed to solve the optimization problem. Finally, provided numerical results show that our proposed model can preserve more details and get higher image visual quality than recent state-of-the-art methods.
