Analysis of the dispersion characteristics of metallic photonic crystals by the plane-wave expansion method
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 5, pp. 1059-1068

A method for studying the dispersion characteristics of photonic crystals — media with a dielectric constant that varies periodically in space — is considered. The method is based on the representation of the wave functions and permittivity of a periodic medium in the form of Fourier series and their subsequent substitution into the wave equation, which leads to the formulation of the dispersion equation. Using the latter, for each value of the wave vector it is possible determined a set of eigen frequencies. Each of eigen frequency forms a separate dispersion curve as a continuous function of the wave number. The Fourier expansion coefficients of the permittivity, which depend on the vectors of the reciprocal lattice of the photonic crystal, are determined on the basis of data on the geometric characteristics of the elements that form the crystal, their electrophysical properties and the density of the crystal. The solution of the dispersion equation found makes it possible to obtain complete information about the number of modes propagating in a periodic structure at different frequencies, and about the possibility of forming band gaps, i.e. frequency ranges within which wave propagation through a photonic crystal is impossible. The focus of this work is on the application of this method to the analysis of the dispersion properties of metallic photonic crystals. The difficulties that arise in this case due to the presence of intrinsic dispersion properties of the metals that form the elements of the crystal are overcome by an analytical description of their permittivity based on the model of free electrons. As a result, a dispersion equation is formulated, the numerical solution of which is easily algorithmized. That makes possible to determine the dispersion characteristics of metallic photonic crystals with arbitrary parameters. Obtained by this method the results of calculation of dispersion diagrams, which characterize two-dimensional metal photonic crystals, are compared with experimental data and numerical results obtained using the method of self-consistent equations. Their good agreement is demonstrated.

Dual-pass Feature-Fused SSD model for detecting multi-scale images of workers on the construction site
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 1, pp. 57-73

When recognizing workers on images of a construction site obtained from surveillance cameras, a situation is typical in which the objects of detection have a very different spatial scale relative to each other and other objects. An increase in the accuracy of detection of small objects can be achieved by using the Feature-Fused modification of the SSD detector. Together with the use of overlapping image slicing on the inference, this model copes well with the detection of small objects. However, the practical use of this approach requires manual adjustment of the slicing parameters. This reduces the accuracy of object detection on scenes that differ from the scenes used in training, as well as large objects. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for automatic selection of image slicing parameters depending on the ratio of the characteristic geometric dimensions of objects in the image. We have developed a two-pass version of the Feature-Fused SSD detector for automatic determination of optimal image slicing parameters. On the first pass, a fast truncated version of the detector is used, which makes it possible to determine the characteristic sizes of objects of interest. On the second pass, the final detection of objects with slicing parameters selected after the first pass is performed. A dataset was collected with images of workers on a construction site. The dataset includes large, small and diverse images of workers. To compare the detection results for a one-pass algorithm without splitting the input image, a one-pass algorithm with uniform splitting, and a two-pass algorithm with the selection of the optimal splitting, we considered tests for the detection of separately large objects, very small objects, with a high density of objects both in the foreground and in the background, only in the background. In the range of cases we have considered, our approach is superior to the approaches taken in comparison, allows us to deal well with the problem of double detections and demonstrates a quality of 0.82–0.91 according to the mAP (mean Average Precision) metric.

Development of a methodological approach and numerical simulation of thermal-hydraulic processes in the intermediate heat exchanger of a BN reactor
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2023, v. 15, no. 4, pp. 877-894

The paper presents the results of three-dimensional numerical simulation of thermal-hydraulic processes in the Intermediate Heat Exchanger of the advanced Sodium-Cooled Fast-Neutron (BN) Reactor considering a developed methodological approach.

The Intermediate Heat Exchanger (IHX) is located in the reactor vessel and intended to transfer heat from the primary sodium circulating on the shell side to the secondary sodium circulating on the tube side. In case of an integral layout of the primary equipment in the BN reactor, upstream the IHX inlet windows there is a temperature stratification of the coolant due to incomplete mixing of different temperature flows at the core outlet. Inside the IHX, in the area of the input and output windows, a complex longitudinal and transverse flow of the coolant also takes place resulting in an uneven distribution of the coolant flow rate on the tube side and, as a consequence, in an uneven temperature distribution and heat transfer efficiency along the height and radius of the tube bundle.

In order to confirm the thermal-hydraulic parameters of the IHX of the advanced BN reactor applied in the design, a methodological approach for three-dimensional numerical simulation of the heat exchanger located in the reactor vessel was developed, taking into account the three-dimensional sodium flow pattern at the IHX inlet and inside the IHX, as well as justifying the recommendations for simplifying the geometry of the computational model of the IHX.

Numerical simulation of thermal-hydraulic processes in the IHX of the advanced BN reactor was carried out using the FlowVision software package with the standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model and the LMS turbulent heat transfer model.

To increase the representativeness of numerical simulation of the IHX tube bundle, verification calculations of singletube and multi-tube sodium-sodium heat exchangers were performed with the geometric characteristics corresponding to the IHX design.

To determine the input boundary conditions in the IHX model, an additional three-dimensional calculation was performed taking into account the uneven flow pattern in the upper mixing chamber of the reactor.

The IHX computational model was optimized by simplifying spacer belts and selecting a sector model.

As a result of numerical simulation of the IHX, the distributions of the primary sodium velocity and primary and secondary sodium temperature were obtained. Satisfactory agreement of the calculation results with the design data on integral parameters confirmed the adopted design thermal-hydraulic characteristics of the IHX of the advanced BN reactor.

Topological microstructure analysis of the TIP4P-EW water model
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2014, v. 6, no. 3, pp. 415-426

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of rigid water model TIP4P-EW at ambient conditions were carried out. Delaunay’s simplexes were considered as structural elements of liquid water. Topological criterion which allows to identify the water microstructure in snapshot of MD cell was used to allocate its dense part. Geometrical analysis of water Delaunay’s simplexes indicates their strong flatness in comparison with a regular tetrahedron that is fundamentally different from the results for dense part of simple liquids. The statistics of TIP4P-EW water clusters was investigated depending on their cardinality and connectivity. It is similar to the statistics for simple liquids and the structure of this dense part is also a fractal surface consisting of the free edges of the Delaunay’s simplexes.

Optimal fishing and evolution of fish migration routes
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 5, pp. 879-893

A new discrete ecological-evolutionary mathematical model is presented, in which the search mechanisms for evolutionarily stable migration routes of fish populations are implemented. The proposed adaptive designs have a small dimension, and therefore have high speed. This allows carrying out calculations on long-term perspective for an acceptable machine time. Both geometric approaches of nonlinear analysis and computer “asymptotic” methods were used in the study of stability. The migration dynamics of the fish population is described by a certain Markov matrix, which can change during evolution. The “basis” matrices are selected in the family of Markov matrices (of fixed dimension), which are used to generate migration routes of mutant. A promising direction of the evolution of the spatial behavior of fish is revealed for a given fishery and food supply, as a result of competition of the initial population with mutants. This model was applied to solve the problem of optimal catch for the long term, provided that the reservoir is divided into two parts, each of which has its own owner. Dynamic programming is used, based on the construction of the Bellman function, when solving optimization problems. A paradoxical strategy of “luring” was discovered, when one of the participants in the fishery temporarily reduces the catch in its water area. In this case, the migrating fish spends more time in this area (on condition of equal food supply). This route is evolutionarily fixes and does not change even after the resumption of fishing in the area. The second participant in the fishery can restore the status quo by applying “luring” to its part of the water area. Endless sequence of “luring” arises as a kind of game “giveaway”. A new effective concept has been introduced — the internal price of the fish population, depending on the zone of the reservoir. In fact, these prices are Bellman's private derivatives, and can be used as a tax on caught fish. In this case, the problem of long-term fishing is reduced to solving the problem of one-year optimization.

Hypergraph approach in the decomposition of complex technical systems
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 5, pp. 1007-1022

The article considers a mathematical model of decomposition of a complex product into assembly units. This is an important engineering problem, which affects the organization of discrete production and its operational management. A review of modern approaches to mathematical modeling and automated computer-aided of decompositions is given. In them, graphs, networks, matrices, etc. serve as mathematical models of structures of technical systems. These models describe the mechanical structure as a binary relation on a set of system elements. The geometrical coordination and integrity of machines and mechanical devices during the manufacturing process is achieved by means of basing. In general, basing can be performed on several elements simultaneously. Therefore, it represents a variable arity relation, which can not be correctly described in terms of binary mathematical structures. A new hypergraph model of mechanical structure of technical system is described. This model allows to give an adequate formalization of assembly operations and processes. Assembly operations which are carried out by two working bodies and consist in realization of mechanical connections are considered. Such operations are called coherent and sequential. This is the prevailing type of operations in modern industrial practice. It is shown that the mathematical description of such operation is normal contraction of an edge of the hypergraph. A sequence of contractions transforming the hypergraph into a point is a mathematical model of the assembly process. Two important theorems on the properties of contractible hypergraphs and their subgraphs proved by the author are presented. The concept of $s$-hypergraphs is introduced. $S$-hypergraphs are the correct mathematical models of mechanical structures of any assembled technical systems. Decomposition of a product into assembly units is defined as cutting of an $s$-hypergraph into $s$-subgraphs. The cutting problem is described in terms of discrete mathematical programming. Mathematical models of structural, topological and technological constraints are obtained. The objective functions are proposed that formalize the optimal choice of design solutions in various situations. The developed mathematical model of product decomposition is flexible and open. It allows for extensions that take into account the characteristics of the product and its production.

The use of finite element method for simulation of heat conductivity processes in polar dielectrics irradiated by electron bunches
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2012, v. 4, no. 4, pp. 767-780

The paper describes the results of computer simulation of time-dependent temperature fields arising in polar dielectrics irradiated by focused electron bunches with average electron energy when analyzing with electron microscopy techniques. The mathematical model was based on solving several-dimensional nonstationary heat conduction equation with use of numerical finite element method. The approximation of thermal source was performed taking into account the estimation of initial electron distribution determined by Monte-Carlo simulation of electron trajectories. The simulation program was designed in Matlab. The geometrical modeling and calculation results demonstrated the main features of model sample heating by electron beam were presented at the given experimental parameters as well as source approximation.

Computer analysis of the bone regeneration strength in a model system of osteosynthesis by the Ilizarov fixator with static loads
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2014, v. 6, no. 3, pp. 427-440

The adequate complexity three-dimensional finite element model of biomechanical system with space, shell and beam-type elements was built. The model includes the Ilizarov fixator and tibial bone’s simulator with the regenerating tissue at the fracture location. The proposed model allows us to specify the orthotropic elastic properties of tibial bone model in cortical and trabecular zones. It is also possible to change the basic geometrical and mechanical characteristics of biomechanical system, change the finite element mash density and define the different external loads, such as pressure on the bone and compression or distraction between the repositioned rings of Ilizarov device.

By using special APDL ANSYS program macros the mode of deformation was calculated in the fracture zone for various static loads on the simulator bone, for compression or distraction between the repositioned rings and for various mechanical properties during different stages of the bone regenerate formation (gelatinous, cartilaginous, trabecular and cortical bone remodeling). The obtained results allow us to estimate the permissible values of the external pressure on the bone and of the displacements of the Ilizarov fixator rings for different stages of the bone regeneration, based on the admittance criterion for the maximum of the stresses in the callus. The presented data can be used in a clinical condition for planning, realization and monitoring of the power modes for transosseous osteosynthesis with the external Ilizarov fixator.

Mathematical modelling of the non-Newtonian blood flow in the aortic arc
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 2, pp. 259-269

The purpose of research was to develop a mathematical model for pulsating blood flow in the part of aorta with their branches. Since the deformation of this most solid part of the aorta is small during the passage of the pulse wave, the blood vessels were considered as non-deformable curved cylinders. The article describes the internal structure of blood and some internal structural effects. This analysis shows that the blood, which is essentially a suspension, can only be regarded as a non-Newtonian fluid. In addition, the blood can be considered as a liquid only in the blood vessels, diameter of which is much higher than the characteristic size of blood cells and their aggregate formations. As a non-Newtonian fluid the viscous liquid with the power law of the relationship of stress with shift velocity was chosen. This law can describe the behaviour not only of liquids but also dispersions. When setting the boundary conditions at the entrance into aorta, reflecting the pulsating nature of the flow of blood, it was decided not to restrict the assignment of the total blood flow, which makes no assumptions about the spatial velocity distribution in a cross section. In this regard, it was proposed to model the surface envelope of this spatial distribution by a part of a paraboloid of rotation with a fixed base radius and height, which varies in time from zero to maximum speed value. The special attention was paid to the interaction of blood with the walls of the vessels. Having regard to the nature of this interaction, the so-called semi-slip condition was formulated as the boundary condition. At the outer ends of the aorta and its branches the amounts of pressure were given. To perform calculations the tetrahedral computer network for geometric model of the aorta with branches has been built. The total number of meshes is 9810. The calculations were performed with use of the software package ABACUS, which has also powerful tools for creating geometry of the model and visualization of calculations. The result is a distribution of velocities and pressure at each time step. In areas of branching vessels was discovered temporary presence of eddies and reverse currents. They were born via 0.47 s from the beginning of the pulse cycle and disappeared after 0.14 s.
