Numerical simulation of converging spherical shock waves with symmetry violation
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 1, pp. 59-71

The study of the development of π-periodic perturbations of a converging spherical shock wave leading to cumulation limitation is performed. The study is based on 3D hydrodynamic calculations with the Carnahan – Starling equation of state for hard sphere fluid. The method of solving the Euler equations on moving (compressing) grids allows one to trace the evolution of the converging shock wave front with high accuracy in a wide range of its radius. The compression rate of the computational grid is adapted to the motion of the shock wave front, while the motion of the boundaries of the computational domain satisfy the condition of its supersonic velocity relative to the medium. This leads to the fact that the solution is determined only by the initial data at the grid compression stage. The second order TVD scheme is used to reconstruct the vector of conservative variables at the boundaries of the computational cells in combination with the Rusanov scheme for calculating the numerical vector of flows. The choice is due to a strong tendency for the manifestation of carbuncle-type numerical instability in the calculations, which is known for other classes of flows. In the three-dimensional case of the observed force, the carbuncle effect was obtained for the first time, which is explained by the specific nature of the flow: the concavity of the shock wave front in the direction of motion, the unlimited (in the symmetric case) growth of the Mach number, and the stationarity of the front on the computational grid. The applied numerical method made it possible to study the detailed flow pattern on the scale of cumulation termination, which is impossible within the framework of the Whitham method of geometric shock wave dynamics, which was previously used to calculate converging shock waves. The study showed that the limitation of cumulation is associated with the transition from the Mach interaction of converging shock wave segments to a regular one due to the progressive increase in the ratio of the azimuthal velocity at the shock wave front to the radial velocity with a decrease in its radius. It was found that this ratio is represented as a product of a limited oscillating function of the radius and a power function of the radius with an exponent depending on the initial packing density in the hard sphere model. It is shown that increasing the packing density parameter in the hard sphere model leads to a significant increase in the pressures achieved in a shock wave with broken symmetry. For the first time in the calculation, it is shown that at the scale of cumulation termination, the flow is accompanied by the formation of high-energy vortices, which involve the substance that has undergone the greatest shock-wave compression. Influencing heat and mass transfer in the region of greatest compression, this circumstance is important for current practical applications of converging shock waves for the purpose of initiating reactions (detonation, phase transitions, controlled thermonuclear fusion).

Topology-based activity recognition: stratified manifolds and separability in sensor space
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 5, pp. 829-850

While working on activity recognition using wearable sensors for healthcare applications, the main issue arises in the classification of activities. When we attempt to classify activities like walking, sitting, or running from accelerometer and gyroscope data, the signals often overlap and noise complicates the classification process. The existing methods do not have solid mathematical foundations to handle this issue. We started with the standard magnitude approach where one can compute $m = \sqrt{a^2_1 + a^2_2 + a^2_3}$ from the accelerometer readings, but this approach failed because different activities ended up in overlapping regions. We therefore developed a different approach. Instead of collapsing the 6-dimensional sensor data into simple magnitudes, we keep all six dimensions and treat each activity as a rectangular box in this 6D space. We define these boxes using simple interval constraints. For example, walking occurs when the $x$-axis accelerometer reading is between $2$ and $4$, the $y$-axis reading is between $9$ and $10$, and so on. The key breakthrough is what we call a separability index $s = \frac{d_{\min}^{}}{\sigma}$ that determines how accurately the classification will work. Here dmin represents how far apart the activity boxes are, and $\sigma$ represents the amount of noise present. From this simple idea, we derive a mathematical formula $P(\text{error}) \leqslant (n-1)\exp\left(-\frac{s^2}8\right)$ that predicts the error rate even before initiating the experiment. We tested this on the standard UCI-HAR and WISDM datasets and achieved $86.1 %$ accuracy. The theoretical predictions matched the actual results within $3 %$. This approach outperforms the traditional magnitude methods by $30.6 %$ and explains why certain activities overlap with each other.

Modeling of the gas suspension expansion with a large pressure-density ratio
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 4, pp. 809-821

Modeling of gas-particle suspensions with large pressure and density gradients is of practical interest in the study of volcanic phenomena, explosions at different altitudes, as well as in technogenic problems related to the operation of space technology and the formation of space debris. This work presents numerical and analytical investigations of the expansion of gas suspensions with a high ratio (up to six orders of magnitude) of pressures and densities. For numerical modeling, a high-resolution hybrid large-particle method was employed. Under the conditions considered, the accuracy of the method was confirmed by comparison with asymptotically exact solutions. The study examined the wave and structural characteristics of concentrated gas suspension expansion depending on particle volume fraction, particle size, and initial pressure ratio. It was found that the polytropic index and sound speed in the gas suspension depend not only on temperature but also on pressure and particle concentration. With increasing pressure, both the polytropic index and sound speed rise, while with increasing particle volume fraction they decrease. In the case of an arbitrary discontinuity decay, an unusual effect is observed compared with “pure” gas dynamics: the relative velocity of the mixture in the uniform flow region decreases as the initial pressure increases. This is explained by the nonlinear dependence of the sound speed in a gas-dispersed mixture on pressure. With increasing particle size (Stokes number), the mixture flow splits into gaseous and dispersed components. At the initial moment, the contact discontinuity separating the mixture from the rarefied gas region splits into two contact boundaries: gaseous and dispersed. A practical conclusion is that when the particle size changes by two orders of magnitude, the gas-dynamic parameters of the mixture in the rarefaction wave region and up to the medium interface remain close to each other. During spatial expansion, the initial cylindrical shape of the dispersed medium successively transforms into a cross-section resembling a hexagon. At the next stage of expansion, the particles redistribute to form a bilateral conical structure. Eventually, a dispersed formation close to a spherical shape emerges.

Mathematical modeling of the age groups of employed peoples by the example of the southern regions of the Russian Far East
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2016, v. 8, no. 5, pp. 787-801

The article focuses on a nonlinear mathematical model that describes the interaction of the different age groups of the employed population. The interactions are treated by analogy with population relationship (competition, discrimination, assistance, oppression, etc). Under interaction of peoples we mean the generalized social and economic mechanisms that cause related changes in the number of employees of different age groups. Three age groups of the employed population are considered. It is young specialists (15–29 years), workers with experience (30–49 years), the employees of pre-retirement and retirement age (50 and older). The estimation of model’s parameters for the southern regions of the Far Eastern Federal District (FEFD) is executed by statistical data. Analysis of model scenarios allows us to conclude the observed number fluctuations of the different ages employees on the background of a stable total employed population may be a consequence of complex interactions between these groups of peoples. Computational experiments with the obtained values of the parameters allowed us to calculate the rate of decline and the aging of the working population and to determine the nature of the interaction between the age groups of employees that are not directly as reflected in the statistics. It was found that in FEFD the employed of 50 years and older are discriminated against by the young workers under 29, employed up to 29 and 30–49 years are in a partnership. It is shown in most developed regions (Primorsky and Khabarovsk Krai) there is “uniform” competition among different age groups of the employed population. For Primorsky Krai we were able to identify the mixing effect dynamics. It is a typical situation for systems in a state of structural adjustment. This effect is reflected in the fact the long cycles of employed population form with a significant decrease in migration inflows of employees 30–49 years. Besides, the change of migration is accompanied by a change of interaction type — from employment discrimination by the oldest of middle generation to discrimination by the middle of older generation. In less developed regions (Amur, Magadan and Jewish Autonomous Regions) there are lower values of migration balance of almost all age groups and discrimination by young workers up 29 years of other age groups and employment discrimination 30–49 years of the older generation.

Full-wave 3D earthquake simulation using the double-couple model and the grid-characteristic method
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 6, pp. 1061-1067

One of the destroying natural processes is the initiation of the regional seismic activity. It leads to a large number of human deaths. Much effort has been made to develop precise and robust methods for the estimation of the seismic stability of buildings. One of the most common approaches is the natural frequency method. The obvious drawback of this approach is a low precision due to the model oversimplification. The other method is a detailed simulation of dynamic processes using the finite-element method. Unfortunately, the quality of simulations is not enough due to the difficulty of setting the correct free boundary condition. That is why the development of new numerical methods for seismic stability problems is a high priority nowadays.

The present work is devoted to the study of spatial dynamic processes occurring in geological medium during an earthquake. We describe a method for simulating seismic wave propagation from the hypocenter to the day surface. To describe physical processes, we use a system of partial differential equations for a linearly elastic body of the second order, which is solved numerically by a grid-characteristic method on parallelepiped meshes. The widely used geological hypocenter model, called the “double-couple” model, was incorporated into this numerical algorithm. In this case, any heterogeneities, such as geological layers with curvilinear boundaries, gas and fluid-filled cracks, fault planes, etc., may be explicitly taken into account.

In this paper, seismic waves emitted during the earthquake initiation process are numerically simulated. Two different models are used: the homogeneous half-space and the multilayered geological massif with the day surface. All of their parameters are set based on previously published scientific articles. The adequate coincidence of the simulation results is obtained. And discrepancies may be explained by differences in numerical methods used. The numerical approach described can be extended to more complex physical models of geological media.

Numerical modelling of seismic waves spread in models with an ice field in the arctic shelf
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 1, pp. 73-82

The Arctic region contains large hydrocarbon deposits. The presence of different ice formations, such as icebergs, ice hummocks, ice fields, complicates the process of carrying out seismic works on the territory. The last of them, ice fields, bring multiple reflections, spreading all over the surface of ice, into seismogramms. These multiple reflections are necessary to be taken into account while analyzing the seismograms, and geologists should be able to exclude them in order to obtain the reflected waves from the lower geological layers, including hydrocarbon layers.

In this work, we solve the problem of the seismic waves spread in the heterogeneous medium. The systems of equations for the linear elastic medium and for the acoustic medium describe the geological layers. We present the detailed description of the numerical solution of these systems of equations with the help of the grid-characteristic method. The final 1D transfer equations are solved with the use of the Rusanov scheme of the third order of accuracy. In the work, we examine the way of multiple waves decrease in ice by establishing the source of impulse deep into the ice field on border with water. We present the results of computer modelling of the seismic waves spread in geological layers, where the seismic source of impulse is situated on the contact border between ice and water, and also with the seismic source of impulse on the surface of ice for the 3D case. The results of the numerical modelling are presented by wave fields, graphs of the velocity x-components and seismogramms for the two problem formulations. We carry out the analysis of influence of establishing the source of impulse on the border between ice and water on the decrease of the x-components of seismic wave velocities, on seismogramms and on wave fields. As a result, the model, where the seismic source of impulse is situated on the contact border between ice and water, makes worse the final result. The model with the source of impulse on the surface of ice demonstrates a decrease of the x-components of seismic wave velocities.

Numerical study of the dynamics of motion of a square body in a supersonic flow behind a shock wave
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2022, v. 14, no. 4, pp. 755-766

In a number of fundamental and practical problems, it is necessary to describe the dynamics of the motion of complexshaped particles in a high-speed gas flow. An example is the movement of coal particles behind the front of a strong shock wave during an explosion in a coal mine. The paper is devoted to numerical simulation of the dynamics of translational and rotational motion of a square-shaped body, as an example of a particle of a more complex shape than a round one, in a supersonic flow behind a passing shock wave. The formulation of the problem approximately corresponds to the experiments of Professor V. M. Boiko and Professor S. V. Poplavski (ITAM SB RAS).

Mathematical model is based on the two-dimensional Euler equations, which are solved in a region with varying boundaries. The defining system of equations is integrated using an explicit scheme and the Cartesian grid method which was developed and verified earlier. The computational algorithm at the time integration step includes: determining the step value, calculating the dynamics of the body movement (determining the force and moment acting on the body; determining the linear and angular velocities of the body; calculating the new coordinates of the body), calculating the gas parameters. To calculate numerical fluxes through the edges of the cell intersected by the boundaries of the body, we use a two-wave approximation for solving the Riemann problem and the Steger – Warming scheme.

The movement of a square with a side of 6 mm was initiated by the passage of a shock wave with a Mach number of 3,0 propagating in a flat channel 800 mm long and 60 mm wide. The channel was filled with air at low pressure. Different initial orientation of the square relative to the channel axis was considered. It is found that the initial position of the square with its side across the flow is less stable during its movement than the initial position with a diagonal across the flow. In this case, the calculated results qualitatively correspond to experimental observations. For the intermediate initial positions of a square, a typical mode of its motion is described, consisting of oscillations close to harmonic, turning into rotation with a constant average angular velocity. During the movement of the square, there is an average monotonous decrease in the distance between the center of mass and the center of pressure to zero.

Modeling the thermal field of stationary symmetric bodies in rarefied low-temperature plasma
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2025, v. 17, no. 1, pp. 73-91

The work investigates the process of self-consistent relaxation of the region of disturbances created in a rarefied binary low-temperature plasma by a stationary charged ball or cylinder with an absorbing surface. A feature of such problems is their self-consistent kinetic nature, in which it is impossible to separate the processes of transfer in phase space and the formation of an electromagnetic field. A mathematical model is presented that makes it possible to describe and analyze the state of the gas, electric and thermal fields in the vicinity of the body. The multidimensionality of the kinetic formulation creates certain problems in the numerical solution, therefore a curvilinear system of nonholonomic coordinates was selected for the problem, which minimizes its phase space, which contributes to increasing the efficiency of numerical methods. For such coordinates, the form of the Vlasov kinetic equation has been justified and analyzed. To solve it, a variant of the large particle method with a constant form factor was used. The calculations used a moving grid that tracks the displacement of the distribution function carrier in the phase space, which further reduced the volume of the controlled region of the phase space. Key details of the model and numerical method are revealed. The model and the method are implemented as code in the Matlab language. Using the example of solving a problem for a ball, the presence of significant disequilibrium and anisotropy in the particle velocity distribution in the disturbed zone is shown. Based on the calculation results, pictures of the evolution of the structure of the particle distribution function, profiles of the main macroscopic characteristics of the gas — concentration, current, temperature and heat flow, and characteristics of the electric field in the disturbed region are presented. The mechanism of heating of attracted particles in the disturbed zone is established and some important features of the process of formation of heat flow are shown. The results obtained are well explainable from a physical point of view, which confirms the adequacy of the model and the correct operation of the software tool. The creation and testing of a basis for the development in the future of tools for solving more complex problems of modeling the behavior of ionized gases near charged bodies is noted.

The work will be useful to specialists in the field of mathematical modeling, heat and mass transfer processes, lowtemperature plasma physics, postgraduate students and senior students specializing in the indicated areas.

Approximate solution to one model of axisymmetric turbulent wake
    Computer Research and Modeling, 2026, v. 18, no. 4, pp. 823-836

In this paper we consider the problem of modeling of flow in the far regions of an axisymmetric momentumless turbulent wake that occurs when a body is flowed. The main features of the studied flow are its almost shear-free nature and its proximity to the self-similar regime, which is confirmed by the available experimental data. A semi-empirical $e-\varepsilon$ model of turbulence based on the Rodi algebraic model of Reynolds stresses is invoked to describe a flow in the far wake. Using group-theoretic analysis, similarity reduction of the invoked model of turbulence to a system of ordinary differential equations is obtained. An approximate self-similar solution of the second kind of the corresponding boundary value problem for the reduced system of equations was constructed using a method based on matching the truncations of asymptotic expansions of its solution found in neighborhoods of the boundary points. The involved approach also allowed for the extraction of an approximate value of the self-similarity exponent and other unknown parameters of the problem during the procedure of matching of the asymptotic expansion. Comparison of the approximate solution of the given boundary value problem constructed in the form of Puiseux series, which includes 16 approximating terms, with the numerical solution found using the shooting method, showed that the maximum relative error between the solutions does not exceed 2%. The approximate value of the self-similarity exponent of the problem established in this work is in a good agreement with the exact value obtained earlier by other authors as a result of the analytical solution of the corresponding nonlinear eigenvalue problem. The approximate solution was compared with the available experimental data on the axisymmetric momentumless turbulent wake obtained at the Lavrentyev Institute of Hydrodynamics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and a satisfactory agreement was found. The approximate formulas developed in this work have practical significance and can be used for quick estimation of the values of hydrodynamic quantities in the far regions of the axisymmetric momentumless turbulent wake. The developed method for constructing approximate solutions to the boundary value problems of free turbulence can also be used in other applied fields that are not related to turbulence theory.
