On some stochastic mirror descent methods for constrained online optimization problems
Computer Research and Modeling, 2019, v. 11, no. 2, pp. 205-217Views (last year): 42.The problem of online convex optimization naturally occurs in cases when there is an update of statistical information. The mirror descent method is well known for non-smooth optimization problems. Mirror descent is an extension of the subgradient method for solving non-smooth convex optimization problems in the case of a non-Euclidean distance. This paper is devoted to a stochastic variant of recently proposed Mirror Descent methods for convex online optimization problems with convex Lipschitz (generally, non-smooth) functional constraints. This means that we can still use the value of the functional constraint, but instead of (sub)gradient of the objective functional and the functional constraint, we use their stochastic (sub)gradients. More precisely, assume that on a closed subset of $n$-dimensional vector space, $N$ convex Lipschitz non-smooth functionals are given. The problem is to minimize the arithmetic mean of these functionals with a convex Lipschitz constraint. Two methods are proposed, for solving this problem, using stochastic (sub)gradients: adaptive method (does not require knowledge of Lipschitz constant neither for the objective functional, nor for the functional of constraint) and non-adaptivemethod (requires knowledge of Lipschitz constant for the objective functional and the functional of constraint). Note that it is allowed to calculate the stochastic (sub)gradient of each functional only once. In the case of non-negative regret, we find that the number of non-productive steps is $O$($N$), which indicates the optimality of the proposed methods. We consider an arbitrary proximal structure, which is essential for decisionmaking problems. The results of numerical experiments are presented, allowing to compare the work of adaptive and non-adaptive methods for some examples. It is shown that the adaptive method can significantly improve the number of the found solutions.

Stable character of the Rice statistical distribution: the theory and application in the tasks of the signals’ phase shift measuring
Computer Research and Modeling, 2020, v. 12, no. 3, pp. 475-485The paper concerns the study of the Rice statistical distribution’s peculiarities which cause the possibility of its efficient application in solving the tasks of high precision phase measuring in optics. The strict mathematical proof of the Rician distribution’s stable character is provided in the example of the differential signal consideration, namely: it has been proved that the sum or the difference of two Rician signals also obey the Rice distribution. Besides, the formulas have been obtained for the parameters of the resulting summand or differential signal’s Rice distribution. Based upon the proved stable character of the Rice distribution a new original technique of the high precision measuring of the two quasi-harmonic signals’ phase shift has been elaborated in the paper. This technique is grounded in the statistical analysis of the measured sampled data for the amplitudes of the both signals and for the amplitude of the third signal which is equal to the difference of the two signals to be compared in phase. The sought-for phase shift of two quasi-harmonic signals is being calculated from the geometrical considerations as an angle of a triangle which sides are equal to the three indicated signals’ amplitude values having been reconstructed against the noise background. Thereby, the proposed technique of measuring the phase shift using the differential signal analysis, is based upon the amplitude measurements only, what significantly decreases the demands to the equipment and simplifies the technique implementation in practice. The paper provides both the strict mathematical substantiation of a new phase shift measuring technique and the results of its numerical testing. The elaborated method of high precision phase measurements may be efficiently applied for solving a wide circle of tasks in various areas of science and technology, in particular — at distance measuring, in communication systems, in navigation, etc.

Investigation of the relationships of the size and production characteristics of phyto- and zooplankton in the Vistula and Curonian lagoons of the Baltic Sea. Part 1. The statistical analysis of long-term observation data and development of the structure for the mathematical model of the plankton food chain
Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 2, pp. 211-246In the paper the statistical relationships between the size and production characteristics of phytoplankton and zooplankton of the Vistula and Curonian lagoons, the Baltic Sea, were investigated. Research phytoplankton and zooplankton within the Russian part of the area of the Vistula and the Curonian lagoon was carried out on the monthly basis (from April to November) within the framework of long-term monitoring program on evaluating of ecological status of the lagoons. The size structure of plankton is the basis for understanding of the development of production processes, mechanisms of formation of the plankton species diversity and functioning of the lagoon ecosystems. As results of the work it was found that the maximum rate of photosynthesis and the integral value of the primary production with a change in cell volume of phytoplankton are changed according to a power law. The result shows that the smaller the size of algal cells in phytoplankton communities the more actively occur metabolism and the more effective they assimilate the solar energy. It is shown that the formation of plankton species diversity in ecosystems of lagoons is closely linked with the size structure of plankton communities and with features of development of the production processes. It is proposed the structure of a spatially homogenous mathematical model of the plankton food chain for the lagoon ecosystems taking into account the size spectrum and the characteristics of phytoplankton and zooplankton. The model parameters are the sizedependent indicators allometrically linked with average volumes of cells and organisms in different ranges of their sizes. In the model the algorithm for changes over time the coefficients of food preferences in the diet of zooplankton was proposed. Developed the size-dependent mathematical model of aquatic ecosystems allows to consider the impact of turbulent exchange on the size structure and temporal dynamics of the plankton food chain of the Vistula and Curonian lagoons. The model can be used to study the different regimes of dynamic behavior of plankton systems depending on the changes in the values of its parameters and external influences, as well as to quantify the redistribution of matter flows in ecosystems of the lagoons.

Topological microstructure analysis of the TIP4P-EW water model

Citations: 1 (RSCI).Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of rigid water model TIP4P-EW at ambient conditions were carried out. Delaunay’s simplexes were considered as structural elements of liquid water. Topological criterion which allows to identify the water microstructure in snapshot of MD cell was used to allocate its dense part. Geometrical analysis of water Delaunay’s simplexes indicates their strong flatness in comparison with a regular tetrahedron that is fundamentally different from the results for dense part of simple liquids. The statistics of TIP4P-EW water clusters was investigated depending on their cardinality and connectivity. It is similar to the statistics for simple liquids and the structure of this dense part is also a fractal surface consisting of the free edges of the Delaunay’s simplexes.

Game-theoretic model of coordinations of interests at innovative development of corporations

The proposed models are based on concordance of private and public interests of agents. It is supposed that the structure of interests of each agent includes both private (personal interests) and public (interests of the whole company connected with its innovative development first) components. The agents allocate their personal resources between these two directions. The system dynamics is described by a difference (not differential) equation. The proposed model of innovative development is studied by simulation and the method of enumeration of the domains of feasible controls with a constant step. The main contribution of the paper consists in comparative analysis of efficiency of the methods of hierarchical control (compulsion or impulsion) for information structures of Stackelberg or Germeier (four structures) by means of the indices of system compatibility. The proposed model is a universal one and can be used for a scientifically grounded support of the programs of innovative development of any economic firm. The features of a specific company are considered in the process of model identification (a determination of the specific classes of model functions and numerical values of its parameters) which forms a separate complex problem and requires an analysis of the statistical data and expert estimations. The following assumptions about information rules of the hierarchical game are accepted: all players use open-loop strategies; the leader chooses and reports to the followers some values of administrative (compulsion) or economic (impulsion) control variables which can be only functions of time (Stackelberg games) or depend also on the followers’ controls (Germeier games); given the leader’s strategies all followers simultaneously and independently choose their strategies that gives a Nash equilibrium in the followers’ game. For a finite number of iterations the proposed algorithm of simulation modeling allows to build an approximate solution of the model or to conclude that it doesn’t exist. A reliability and efficiency of the proposed algorithm follow from the properties of the scenario method and the method of a direct ordered enumeration with a constant step. Some comprehensive conclusions about the comparative efficiency of methods of hierarchical control of innovations are received.

On a possible approach to a sport game with discrete time simulation
Computer Research and Modeling, 2017, v. 9, no. 2, pp. 271-279Views (last year): 9.The paper proposes an approach to simulation of a sport game, consisting of a discrete set of separate competitions. According to this approach, such a competition is considered as a random processes, generally — a non-Markov’s one. At first we treat the flow of the game as a Markov’s process, obtaining recursive relationship between the probabilities of achieving certain states of score in a tennis match, as well as secondary indicators of the game, such as expectation and variance of the number of serves to finish the game. Then we use a simulation system, modeling the match, to allow an arbitrary change of the probabilities of the outcomes in the competitions that compose the match. We, for instance, allow the probabilities to depend on the results of previous competitions. Therefore, this paper deals with a modification of the model, previously proposed by the authors for sports games with continuous time.
The proposed approach allows to evaluate not only the probability of the final outcome of the match, but also the probabilities of reaching each of the possible intermediate results, as well as secondary indicators of the game, such as the number of separate competitions it takes to finish the match. The paper includes a detailed description of the construction of a simulation system for a game of a tennis match. Then we consider simulating a set and the whole tennis match by analogy. We show some statements concerning fairness of tennis serving rules, understood as independence of the outcome of a competition on the right to serve first. We perform simulation of a cancelled ATP series match, obtaining its most probable intermediate and final outcomes for three different possible variants of the course of the match.
The main result of this paper is the developed method of simulation of the match, applicable not only to tennis, but also to other types of sports games with discrete time.

Some relationships between thermodynamic characteristics and water vapor and carbon dioxide fluxes in a recently clear-cut area

Citations: 1 (RSCI).The temporal variability of exergy of short-wave and long-wave radiation and its relationships with sensible heat, water vapor (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes on a recently clear-cut area in a mixed coniferous and small-leaved forest in the Tver region is discussed. On the basis of the analysis of radiation and exergy efficiency coefficients suggested by Yu.M. Svirezhev it was shown that during the first eight months after clearcutting the forest ecosystem functions as a "heat engine" i.e. the processes of energy dissipation dominated over processes of biomass production. To validate the findings the statistical analysis of temporary variability of meteorological parameters, as well as, daily fluxes of sensible heat, H2O and CO2 was provided using the trigonometrical polynomials. The statistical models that are linearly depended on an exergy of short-wave and long-wave radiation were obtained for mean daily values of CO2 fluxes, gross primary production of regenerated vegetation and sensible heat fluxes. The analysis of these dependences is also confirmed the results obtained from processing the radiation and exergy efficiency coefficients. The splitting the time series into separate time intervals, e.g. “spring–summer” and “summer–autumn”, allowed revealing that the statistically significant relationships between atmospheric fluxes and exergy were amplified in summer months as the clear-cut area was overgrown by grassy and young woody vegetation. The analysis of linear relationships between time-series of latent heat fluxes and exergy showed their statistical insignificance. The linear relationships between latent heat fluxes and temperature were in turn statistically significant. The air temperature was a key factor improving the accuracy of the models, whereas effect of exergy was insignificant. The results indicated that at the time of active vegetation regeneration within the clear-cut area the seasonal variability of surface evaporation is mainly governed by temperature variation.

Analysis of predictive properties of ground tremor using Huang decomposition
Computer Research and Modeling, 2024, v. 16, no. 4, pp. 939-958A method is proposed for analyzing the tremor of the earth’s surface, measured by means of space geodesy, in order to highlight the prognostic effects of seismicity activation. The method is illustrated by the example of a joint analysis of a set of synchronous time series of daily vertical displacements of the earth’s surface on the Japanese Islands for the time interval 2009–2023. The analysis is based on dividing the source data (1047 time series) into blocks (clusters of stations) and sequentially applying the principal component method. The station network is divided into clusters using the K-means method from the maximum pseudo-F-statistics criterion, and for Japan the optimal number of clusters was chosen to be 15. The Huang decomposition method into a sequence of independent empirical oscillation modes (EMD — Empirical Mode Decomposition) is applied to the time series of principal components from station blocks. To provide the stability of estimates of the waveforms of the EMD decomposition, averaging of 1000 independent additive realizations of white noise of limited amplitude was performed. Using the Cholesky decomposition of the covariance matrix of the waveforms of the first three EMD components in a sliding time window, indicators of abnormal tremor behavior were determined. By calculating the correlation function between the average indicators of anomalous behavior and the released seismic energy in the vicinity of the Japanese Islands, it was established that bursts in the measure of anomalous tremor behavior precede emissions of seismic energy. The purpose of the article is to clarify common hypotheses that movements of the earth’s crust recorded by space geodesy may contain predictive information. That displacements recorded by geodetic methods respond to the effects of earthquakes is widely known and has been demonstrated many times. But isolating geodetic effects that predict seismic events is much more challenging. In our paper, we propose one method for detecting predictive effects in space geodesy data.

The long-term empirical macro model of world dynamics

Outlines approaches to the construction of a new simulation model of global development and the results of the simulation. The basis of the model building is laid empirical approach which based on the statistical analysis of the main socio-economic indicators. On the basis of this analysis identified the main variables. Dynamic equations (in continuous differential form) were written for these variables. Dependencies between variables were selected based on the dynamics of indicators in the past and on the basis of expert assessments, while econometric techniques were used, based on regression analysis. Calculations have been performed for the resulting dynamic equations system, the results are presented in the form of a trajectories beam for those indicators that are directly observable, and for which statistics are available. Thus, it is possible to assess the scatter of the trajectories and understand the predictive capability of this model.

Empirical testing of institutional matrices theory by data mining
Computer Research and Modeling, 2015, v. 7, no. 4, pp. 923-939The paper has a goal to identify a set of parameters of the environment and infrastructure with the most significant impact on institutional-matrices that dominate in different countries. Parameters of environmental conditions includes raw statistical indices, which were directly derived from the databases of open access, as well as complex integral indicators that were by method of principal components. Efficiency of discussed parameters in task of dominant institutional matrices type recognition (X or Y type) was evaluated by a number of methods based on machine learning. It was revealed that greatest informational content is associated with parameters characterizing risk of natural disasters, level of urbanization and the development of transport infrastructure, the monthly averages and seasonal variations of temperature and precipitation.
